Dear all,
I wonder if this problem was caused by tinkering with Firefox's settings to enable quicker browsing.
Now the entire Ubuntu OS has become unstable.
I get the following error message during booting:
/dev/hda7: unexpected inconsistency; Run fsck manually...
An automatic file system check of the root file system failed.....
A manual fsck must be performed, then file system rebooted....
so how to perform manual fsck? also there is something about badblocks on the Internet. How to turn these into good blocks?
help would be appreciated.

Did you have an unclean shutdown?

Boot into single user mode (if the system doesn't dump you there directly). linux 1 at the grub prompt. # fsck /dev/hda7

Bad blocks are physically bad sectors. Back your data up ASAP. Buy a new disk.
