Hello everyone at LUG-BOM,
I am facing this strange problem while trying to install Kubuntu/Ubuntu 7.10 on a friend's computer. The media integrity is verified as I used the same CDs on his laptop and they worked fine.
However I got the following error while trying to install it on the desktop computer. { [ 0.476000 ] .. MP-BIOS bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC [ 0.476000 ] Kernel panic - not syncing: IO-APIC + timer doesn't work! Boot with apic=debug and send a report. Then try booting with the `noapic` option. }
I did not try the apic=debug and the noapic options as i am not aware how to set the boot options.
Any help in this regard greatly appreciated. Thanks and regards.

at the boot prompt <kernel name> noapic
How to enter the above parameter? Press 'e', move to the kernel line, press 'e' again. Then when you have edited, enter and then 'b' to boot.
Regards, Amit.

In K/Ubuntu, at the initial boot options gui list, hit the F6 key and add whatever options you want to add, at the blinking cursor. In this case noapic.

Thank you everyone for replying..
Although I am not in a position of troubleshooting Linux issues yet but i am in a situation where i have to.. :P This problem machine is away from my place.. so please lend me any more knowledge about what else might be wrong over there that might help get it up and running. If any more information from me would help figure it out, please let me know.
hey Rony, i tried the F6 option and entered "noapic" at the prompt that popped up.. Just appended "noapic" after the string that was already there ending in "--" But it did not work; again showed the same error lines.
I am extremely sorry to sound like a pest here.. I tried the online documentations/faq.. googled the exact error and found some stuff.. but all that flied past at way too high altitudes.. :P
Thank you all again. This friend i am trying to help is willing to convert to Linux completely. He's got an Insurance business and has two computers at his office. He wants to network them and I have no knowledge regarding that. Also, if someone could help with installing Ubuntu over the network once its set up. Although may not be required because there are just two comps, but if its less pain than sharing a single CD ROM on two machines, i think its worth it for me.. :)
I guess we were also planning to have a workshop on this one at HBCSE. (Alpesh??) Network installation sounds pretty intriguing. Concerned people, please look into it if possible.
Thank you.
Warm regards.

There are some machines that are not friendly to certain linux distros so you got to try other versions and flavours too. A few days ago I tried to boot live K/Ubuntu CDs on some machines out of which 2 machines were very stubborn and gave I/O errors for different *buntus even though the drives and media were OK. Surprisingly they were Intel chipset machines of Asus and Gigabyte mobos. On the Asus machine, only Sabayon worked and on the other only XBuntu worked among the *buntus. I suspect that there may be tramp versions of popular chipsets that are cheap and unfriendly.

at the end of the line type noapic nolapic

should help.
BTW what mobo? what cpu?. ALWAYS before you start an install get the hardware details.

Thank you all again for replying. The mobo and cpu are Asus M2NE and AMD 3600+ respectively.
Are there any specific issues related with this hardware?

Yes. The MCP61 chipset apic does not play well with linux. But works very well otherwise.

So, does the M2NE board come with this chipset, i am sorry, i don't know anything about these hardware components.
Is it not possible to use Linux on that hardware? :(
This would surely turn away many who just want to try out Linux and would have added up to the Linux user-base otherwise.

Caveat Number 1 Always check the chipset numbers and google/linux on the net. Caveat Number 2 never rely on a net install Caveat Number 3 Always check the Media for errors AND your brand of dvd drive.
Most of the mobos and bios combos are full of bugs. To work around these they set up themselves a t much less than maximum performance. When linux readjusts stuff like DMA and interrupt routing things start playing up. Also linux ACPI was very bad and is just tolerable right now (never mind other OSes). For desktops you must check the video and sound engine chip numbers before purchasing.
