Hello All,
MTNL's triband is getting from bad to worse with connectivity problems, when I need it the most. So I am pondering over dumping the extra line and going for the USB modems from Tata or Reliance. That will give me connectivity outside Mumbai too.
What are the user experiences with Reliance and Tata USB modems? How do they fare during peak hours? What download speeds do you average?

I had tata, it gave avg of 14-16KBps, at times touching 20KBps, it was 512MB/m plan. Iam not sure of unlimited ones, have a unlimited reliance (office one, zte pcmcia card), which is pathetic, never giving more than 5-6KBps

I was using in Delhi, but it worked pretty well in mumbai, pune, hyderabad etc.. tata apparently doesnt have such a big base as reliance / GSMs with lot of their connections being landline ones.

I have a unlimited plan from Tata Teleservices. Anurag has it even, but 700MB plan iirc. The card works just fine on Linux. I have been using it since a long time now. Works in random parts of the country - actually has been test by both of us - in various parts of the country - Panvel, Mankhurd, Bombay, Calicut, Chennai, Bangalore, Delhi, Faridabad, Kolkatta, Manali :O even. It works if there is a Tata Indicom network. Speed is good even ( for some definitions of good, 15-20K ) . I have done a KDEPIM release over it once which included uploading of tarball of whole of KDEPIM source. It took some 25 minutes to scp the 11MB file.
Cheers!

Hmm. Bandwidth wise, Tata looks promising.

Speed is pathetic in and around Thane. If you complain they just tell you to move to a place of better network coverage. Next to useless. -- Regards, Koustubha Kale

ummm? You want to torrent over a 16 Kbps line, really? We are talking about data card and hence dialup connections effectively. Downtimes - ummm don't really know, it works if there is a tata indicom network, so I guess uptime is important there or else lots of mobile users will be in a messy situation as well or maybe not.
Anyways if you are wondering about torrenting over tataindicom broadband aka vsnl , yes it does work.
Cheers!

Like I said, it works. And some days back I put a mail to this list that I have just subscribed to their service. I had 1-2 downtime when there was a power surge somewhere. And since MSEB has decided to cut power again, I have downtimes again during those periods which can technically be resolved if these guys put a backup for the switches - which they do atleast for some of them.
Cheers!

That is a problem which happens continuosly for abt a month in a locality. Mostly due to upgrades. It then stabilises at the earlier levels.

Tata cdma usb modem is ok where ever signal strength is sufficient. Throughput is 30~40Kbps. But at my residence - no adsl :( - tata crawls and quite often simply fails to connect.
