Try PuppyLinux, Debian with the LXDE desktop, use text based installer.

crunchbag ... goodness of ubuntu but still light. Alternatively you could try building your own using a minimal cd.Arch Linux, small, speedy and very minimal.

What do you mean "non of them work "? Can you eloborate? Yes, BTW the machines are ACER celeron 256 MB ram, 80GB HD. and used by my office people for word , excel and some time email.
1. Ubuntu - takes ages to load live CD and then install stops after an hour or so. 2. Knoppix - Behaves erratically - mouse stops working , key board stops working, monitor complains "out of sync" etc. 3. DSL - works fine but does not work from hard disk or USB.

Live CD is always slow, esp. if the cd drive does not have dma.
- Knoppix - Behaves erratically - mouse stops working , key board stops
working, monitor complains "out of sync" etc.
Flaky hardware
- DSL - works fine but does not work from hard disk or USB.
Not installed correctly.
Sarge, Etch, Lenny all work like a charm with via C3 (eqiv to a celeron 800Mhz) with 256MB and an 8GB pendrive, 4Gb of which is free. And it runs KDE.
I have also run XFCE, twm, and plain X all without a whimper.

Flaky hardware
Possible but ... with Knoppix, I have experienced improperly detected display on perfectly good hardware; on which LiveCDs of Ubuntu, openSUSE booted fine (1280x1024 @ 24 color depth).
Flaky hardware
The machine is ACER. and some time it works and some time does not, and that is annoying...
Any way, will try puppy, looks promising, and has what I need.

Puppy is a toy and users may outgrow it soon.

Afaik going above "standard" vesa resolution is always dicey. Afaik upto 800 x 600 is standard and 1024 x 768 also common enough (and implemented in the vga bios in a more or less standard way). Due to volatile nature of a live cd, configuring the display is a problem.

True. In my case FWIW, 1280x1024 res. was auto detected by the hardware detection of the Ubuntu/openSUSE LiveCDs. I did not set them @ boot time.

Lenny has a live cd too. It boots a full desktop on only 256 MB machines.
2009/4/28 Mukund Deshmukh mukund.deshmukh@gmail.com:
- Ubuntu - takes ages to load live CD and then install stops after an

Ubuntu also comes in an 'alternate install CD' version, which works like the text mode debian-installer.

Processor speed is essential too. However Lenny with KDE works fine on P4 with 256 MB RAM, so Celeron should not be far behind. At the initial boot prompt itself you can choose alternate desktop installations. XFCE will be lighter than KDE.

you might want to try, 1. vecor linux (http://vectorlinux.com/) 2. xubuntu (http://www.xubuntu.org/)
Thanks Gourav
