i can't seem to be able to configure my dlink 56kbps external modem on linux....redhat v7.2
i've used both graphical and text mode interface but when i dial i alwayz get a response of "NO DIAL TONE DETECTED"
can anyone help me out
Hello, I guess what you mean here is that you have not been able to configure your modem. If you dont hear the dial tone, most probably you configured it wrongly. If it is that, then, probably u need to search for suitable driver files online. You shud look for the FCC number of your modem, search for the drivers for that chipset and install them, and then u shud be all set. get a response of "NO DIAL TONE DETECTED"
make sure that you have x3 in the intialization or dial string for the modem. most modem are made with us phonelines in mind. their dialtone is different than ours and hence its not recognised. setting x3 will put the modem into blind dial mode which will dial without checking for dialtone.
first make sure that the modem is able to hear the line...you can do this by using minicom and sending ath1 to the modem. you should be able to hear dialtone thru modem speaker.
