Hi, I have had a prety bad experience with Mandriva 07.I have lost THREE luser accounts and all my docs,pics and music twice coz the third time today,I used a Knoppix 5.0 live CD.The typical error message is that the $HOME/._dmrc file or something like that is being ignored coz either i either don't own my HOME or it does not exist at all! Another paradox is that when I login to mandriva with root (/root) as my home directory,my /home is empty except for an empty lost+found folder but when I browse to the same location thru the Knoppix live CD,it showed me my stuff though it was inaccessible to me.I 'su'ed to root in Konsole in live CD,chowned the Home folder,umounted the D: partition and mounted it with - w.Though I now have all my stuff safely burned onto a CD,can someone please help me out of this repetitive problem?Also,can someone help with a proper and complete installation of Mandriva on my system(personal presence would be preferred ;-)).

Pretty weird thing to happen. Can you tell me exactly which release are you using? I hope its not a testing release. Anyway, have you tried any other distro? Does it exhibit similar behavior?

It is thanks to you that I came to know a new thing called rootkit today. I downloaded the detector to check my system for rootkits.
There is so much information flowing. I am now learning new terms like launchpad, git, upstream, fork, roseto etc. :)

An empty directory with a lost+found is generally seen for an empty partition.. perhaps the /home that you see from mandriva and the one you see from knoppix are different..
Compare the output of the "mount" and "df -h" command.. in both cases.

Your hard disk could be getting baddy baddy or FS is corrupted. BTW, what is an luser account and how different is it from user?

Again, corrupted files?
Also see if replacing the HDD data cable helps.
