I have been using Linux since RHL 5.2 and haven't faced any major problems since then. However with PCQ Linux 7.1 , which was distributed by PCQuest in it's July 2001 issue,I am facing severe problems as described below.
I have Cyrix MII 300 Processor,64 MB SDRam,700 MB Hard Disk Space reserved for Linux,Yamaha Sound Card,Sis 6215c PCI graphic adapter (No prob with this thing though)
Now whenever I start playing mp3 using either mpg123 in character mode or XMMS in GNOME and work on something else like just managing files or editing a text file ,etc.. the LINUX simply hangs! Even if I press <alt><F2> for another terminal nothing happens. Also while multitasking the quality of sound is pathetic.
I reinstalled RHL 6.2 and I did not find any of the problems.Linux is as stable as it is known for.
I tried not to do *any* other jobs while playing mp3 and still 7.1 hangs ! Please help me as I am very frustrated by this as I love mp3's as much as I love Linux.
P.S.
While booting LINUX gives following messages which are not displayed by 6.2
hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } hda: dma_intr: error=0x84 { DriveStatusError BadCRC } hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } hda: dma_intr: error=0x84 { DriveStatusError BadCRC } hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } hda: dma_intr: error=0x84 { DriveStatusError BadCRC } hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } hda: dma_intr: error=0x84 { DriveStatusError BadCRC }
Could This be the problem ?

I tried installing 7.1 from pcq it gave me same error while installing. I think there is a problem in the CDs. We changed it thrice with our agent then I got the correct CD. It installed smoothly with the final CD.
Got it replaced.

Nikhil,
Would appreciate it if you were to preface your posts with a subject.

IIRC, this problem, while it could be caused by a faulty CD, can be fixed by recompiling the kernel with the hard disk set to multi_io. Please check the help info in "make <"" | menu | x>config", with the stuff in <> being the kernel config program of your choice. Also, see the kernel documents for the MULTI_IO documentation. I will also check it when I get home this evening and if I find something relevant, will mail you.
Rgds,
Krishnan

hda is unlikely to be his CD drive; if it is then he's got bigger problems.
hda is likely the primary master hard disk with his Win root and maybe Linux root. That's a different set of problems. It could be failing.
You didn't get the point, did you, Satya? Nikhil had surmised that the problem was caused by a corrupted Linux CD, from which he had loaded RH 7.1 (the PCQ CD, actually). While a faulty CD *could* have caused this problem (my PCQ RH 6.2 CD came with, of all things, patches of glue on it, which led to similar seek errors till I cleaned it with alcohol), I figured that this was more likely an issue with his HDD setup, and so advised him to configure multi_io. That is the reason for the CD reference in my original post.

Krishnan

You may want to try recompiling your kernel. This could be a problem with incorrect sound drivers or something similar. Also try pnpdump and isapnp to find out if the system knows what sound card you're using.
While booting LINUX gives following messages which are not displayed by 6.2
hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } hda: dma_intr: error=0x84 { DriveStatusError BadCRC }
This could be the problem, but it would also affect other things, not just mp3. You can fix this by getting a new kernel and compiling it with CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEDMA_PCI, CONFIG_IDEDMA_PCI_AUTO. Also, use hdparm to turn on or off dma after booting (hdparm -d)
