It depends on how you define "a lot". But I assume you meant to use it in reference to a majority. If that's the case, then you are grossly mistaken. J. Random user, most likely, does NOT have any clue as to what Linux is. Or if he does know about alternatives to Windows, then he is most likely mistaken as to what the nature of these alternatives is. He probably thinks that these alternatives to Windows, barring Macintosh OSs, are very "geeky" in nature and can be used only hackers and developers. It is this perception that needs to be changed. Thus I am with you here(on what needs to be done, but I think you got the causes wrong.
