Please check http://tldp.org/
BTW, I am just curious. How did you learn to use Microsoft(R) Windows(TM)?
This will help us make people learn GNU/Linux faster.
HTH With regards,

Hello amey welcome to the world of Linux and Open Source. There are many sites which will help you to learn about linux but it will be best if you could buy or get a book from library cause I don't think it would be easy sitting on your computers reading all the time it would be too strenous on the eyes. You can get great resources online too. One help will be www.google.com/linux. Other sites that are useful are the sites of the distro that you are using eg. for Fedora Core you can go to www.redhat.com/fedora or for suse you can go to www.novell.com/linux/suse. It would be great to start out with suse as its a newbie friendly operating system. Another great place is forums like www.linuxiso.org , www.justlinux.com and many more just google for it. I also got some e-books if you need them tell me I'll mail them to you.

Hi Amey,
I'd say the best way would be to get a copy of say Mandriva or Fedora Core and install it. Or even better try getting a live CD (just so you don't have to worry about messing up your system during install).
There is only so much you can do by reading about something.
Get a book, if you have access to a printer where it doesn't cost you to print then get one of the basic guides off www.tldp.org and print it out.
Try practicing those commands on the system and then it'll be a lot more fun to learn.
Believe me linux is a lot more fun than windows and definitely more geeky ;)
<dreaming> Now only if somebody could come up with need for speed or max payne for linux then I can get rid of windows completely </dreaming>

Your background? It will help us to know if u are computer savvy. If u are GNU/Linux (GNU/Linux is what u need to run Linux) is far easier to install and use than anything else invented on earth. If not install requires a little basic info (u should have known what u purchased anyway) about the hardware. Also be aware in the real world some hardware (like winmodems and winprinters) do not work too well. U will know how u have been fleeced by M$ et al as u go along the swantra software path.

My first Linux tutor, friend, philosopher and guide was the 'Linux Bible RedHat 8'. It was a fat book with free CDs included and it gave step by step instructions on how to partition my hard disk and add the 2 required Linux partitions Ext3 with mount point and Swap. The latter part is a normal GUI installation as you would do in Windows. Currently you should get the Fedora Core 4 book as Red Hat 8 is an old version. Once your Linux OS is up, you can use it just like windows.
Linux is a very flexible and open source system so you may face difficulties in getting everything working in one distro as you do in windows which is closed source and meant to be an all-in-one operating system. Linux comes in many distros, each having its own speciality. Multimedia is an area that will seek your patience in using Linux. Otherwise Linux is best suited for Office Suite, Internet and E-mail.
Regards,
Rony.
