Dear Luggers,
This is off topic. The recent fire at Sion had 3 casualties. A woman and her child took refuge in a lift to escape from the fire and reach the ground floor. However, just at that time, the building's power was switched off for safety and the two got trapped inside, inhaled poisonous gases and expired.
To prevent such tragedies from happenning, lift manufacturers could provide a mechanical crank inside the lift to let the occupants slowly bring the lift up or down to a safe floor. If the doors are the automatic type, then a mechanical arrangement to open the door in case of an emerrgency. As a safety measure, the door will open only when the lift has aligned with any available floor.
If you know people in this profession, please pass on this message to them.
Regards,
Rony.

And the relevance of all your posts to Linux has been?

Dear Devdas,
All the other ideas use computing as a core operation and linux being open source is best suited for those who may be keen on developing those ideas. Giving an idea is a suggesstion. Implementing it or modifying it or rejecting it, is your own individual choice. The last idea, I agree is a mechanical one but consider a scenerio where Linus Tarvolds visits India and gets trapped in a lift during a fire. If he uses the cranking lever to escape safely, then we all stand a good chance of downloading the next version of the linux kernel. If my ideas have caused anyone any trouble then my apologies for the same.
Regards,
Rony.

GASP!!
This is the most far fetched scenario described. I think and hope that most modern lifts are better and can cope up with such emergencies.

Linus getting stuck in an elevator will not stop the development of the linux kernel. It will proceed as always.

I do model railroads. I wnat to be able to control my trains and maybe add some signals.
Damn, that *is* on-topic. :-(

I should hope he has the sense to not enter a lift during a fire. They say (and there are signs on and in every elevator) that you should use the stairs and the the lift in case of fire.
If he's *in* the lift when the fire starts, I shold hope the lift has enough sense to stop at the nearest floor as soon as the fire alarm goes off.
Anything more and you might as well start padding the entire world with fire-proof foam.

Jokes apart, a young woman and her little girl lost their lives in a lift just a few days ago due to poison gas inhalation in the fire at the Sion high rise building. Why accidents or mishaps take place is one issue, but during one, if we can help in reducing or eliminating any casualties, its worth every effort. Each one of us, as well as our dear ones do travel in lifts at some time or another. Whenever there is a fire on one floor in a high rise, it may not be noticable to people on other floors unless when it may be too late. All circumstances are not the same.
Rony.

It's still not relevant to this list. We sympathise, but don't post anything so far off topic on this list. I hope this is clear. Further tangential posts will earn you moderation.
