Can anyone recommend a good converter to get my .mov files and .dat files into real format.
The idea behind doing this is to reduce the size and the streaming time when placed online. Is converting to real from .mov a good idea or it will not make a difference?
thanks abhishek

A very bad idea imo. use an open format like theora. Afaik the real format is closed and encumbered. So u are likely to get into trouble. vlc is great for transcoding and streaming but requires some effort in understanding it's infinite features and comands.

Ok, so open format it is. I dont particularly care about the format. Only concerns are that when I upload those, they should choke the bandwidths of the people trying to view it, and they should be able to view it. Will they have to install additional plugins?
thanks again.

U have to be concerned. Without a licenced encoder u could be looking at fat liabilities.

That would depend on the bitrate and resolution settings. Currently MPEG4 is the best and vlc can stream and en/decode that very well. Theora is not as good. For high resolution high bitrate streams Dirac (gpl by BBC) is particularly good but experimental right now.

Yes they will require the theora codec available at http://xiph.org/ theora/
Otoh u can use vlc/ffmpeg to create mpeg4 streams, although mpg4 is encumbered for commercial use.

Video lan rocks! I installed it yesterday after hunting down not less than 15-20 dependencies (yes, i am an old fashioned Redhat guy). It sure is feature rich but the UI needs a lot to be desired!

Use the wxvlc interface, it is better than the gtk i/f. Actually it'sthe cli interface that is a mind blower. Perfect for just piping a file / stream into vlc and getting all sorts of stuff out. I mean who wants to watch boring shaadi-baraat videos while transcoding.

True indeed. Infact this is where Linux apps fail. A good, power GUI would woo the community ;)

Can someone tell me exactly how can I convert my RMVB and WMV files to any other format officially supported by GNU/Linux?

I'm using win32codecs and real player on my Gentoo amd64 box. I just had to use mplayer-bin compiled on a 32 bit platform instead of compiling a 64 bit mplayer.
The Gentoo AMD64 documentation has a nice HOWTO for creating a 32 bit chrooted environment on an amd64 machine. Inside this, one can use any applications that are 32 bit only. Though I haven't tried applying this to any other distro.

Did I ever ask if w32codecs work on Gentoo? Please dont reply if your post is not relevant. It doesnt solve my problem! -- Regards, Sanket Medhi.

Well, it is relevant, because what I said proves that you can indeed use win32codecs on an AMD64 system.
Oh and if you read carefully, you can see a way to use them on your own distro too.

Is using w32codecs without permission or without paying for it "illegal"? -- Regards, Sanket Medhi.

There is a good discussion on this in the Nov issue of the TUX magazine (freely downladable from http://www.tuxmagazine.com/). Read the editorial. Regards, Mohan S N

This statement goes against the spirit of science and technology development and human progress in general. Technology was created for man, man is not a slave of technology. The intelligence level of a human being cannot be measured in terms of his/her technical ability.
