Hello,
I edited the /etc/inittab file so that the INIT run level is 5 by default. When my machine starts, it boots normally upto the command line interface login prompt and then tries to start X. It is unable to do so successfully - the screen keeps flickering and sometimes shows a large X in the middle.
I tried to come out of it by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1 and Ctrl-Alt-Backspace. None of these work. I have to invariably type Ctrl-Alt-Del to reboot.
I tried to boot from the PCQLinux 7.1 CD ROM and go into "linux rescue" mode but the system would hang after displaying the message "Starting anaconda...please wait".
Is it possible to change the INIT run levl at boot time by passing the appropriate command to the kernel?
If not, what is the solution to this problem? I cannot get any work done at all because of it!
Thanks. Parul Mathur
Hi Parul,
You can do so by typing @ the lilo prompt linux single
then edit your /etc/inittab to wat ever runlevel which u want to run.

I'm assuming that in lilo your linux system is called linux.
At the lilo prompt, type linux 3 to start in runlevel 3, linux 1 to start in run level 1, etc. Once you've done that, edit your inittab again.
Instead of doing it in inittab, it may be better if you edit lilo.conf, and add a new entry identical to the previous one, with append=5 added, and the label changed. That way you can decide at boot time which run level you want.

At the Lilo Boot Prompt type "linux single" or "linux 1" It will boot into single user mode, now make the appropriate changes and run "init 3" or "init 5", or you may reboot.
