Hi Linuxers, I was wondering if I can reasonably run X on a 486 with 8 MB RAM, and run a GTK+ program. I don't need the whole of Gnome to run, and will need to run only a single program. It perfectly acceptible if it takes 5 minutes to load, and thrashes like crazy for a few minutes before settling down.
Basically need to write some software for an event in college. I'll get at least one P-III with lots of RAM and hard disk space which I intend to use as a server, with rest of the (recycled) machines network booting.

Should work, provided you have a driver for the video card in the 486 box. You may need to use an older X version to ensure this.
