Hi there, This is Vihang a rookie linuxer... I believe that the real potential of linux system lies in its networking capability but somehow my home machine is not connecting to LAN i am using Red Hat 8.0 and my configuration is celeron 2 GHz, 128 mb ram , and a graphics card. i have installed the graphics card.
A brief description about the problem is when i go to network configuration wizard my network card is detected properly which is Realtech (some number). Then in the next step i manually put my Static IP address given by my net connection provider i enter subnet mask and all the detail. After the wizard finishes i try accessing any website and it says website not found. i try pinging the some ip and it says network not reachable. Everythign is working fine on my Windows XP site.
The interface eth0 is detected properly during the booting of the system.
Not sure from where to start the troubleshooting. I tried searching on the net but no relevent information Any help would greatly be appreciated.

First of all please program your mailer to wrap lines at around 72 chars.
From your description it appears that you have not programmed any DNS
servers in your /etc/resolv.conf - details "man 5 resolv.conf"

Hi, I am not sure if i can be of any help. I am new to linux. But this is what i would do. check if eth0 is up. or bring it up with 'ifconfig eth0 up' or go to settings >> Network Device Control and select eth0 and click activate. now try pinging ur own ip address. this will make sure ur network is up. try to ping ur default gateway to make sure u can connect to ur gateway. Check list for you.
1. Are you able to ping your default gateway's ip?
2. In windows, does your service provider want you to use an authentication software like 24x7 client or something like that?
