unusual. But I think you have not got the whole picture. I did not make Meebo, they dont pay me. All I want is a solution. A workable solution. You have said these same things last time this whole discussion cropped up. But where is the alternative? I stop using Meebo. Fine. So how do I IM.
I've already built a partial solution for you to use. It's up to you to take it forward. I've been looking for new developers for over two years, and no one has stepped forward.
If you're interested, try http://libyahoo2.sourceforge.net/
I am very much interested. I am already on the libyahoo mailing list, but I joined 1.5 years back when I was still a n00b. I recently heard from Dr. Nagarjuna that you had authored libyahoo, and had heard about Freehoo and Freetalk independently while browsing the Web many that same 1.5 years back.
Could you just give me a pointer as what the issue exactly is? I mean what is the difference between the Windoze and the Free client? I heard that the Windows client keeps scanning the ports and picks one which is available. Is this the 'magic'?
Looking forward to the libyahoo project page...
Happy hacking, Debarshi

libyahoo2 already does all of this, so it's not the answer. Perhaps you need to analyse your network traffic using a packet analyser like ethereal or something and then come up with an idea of what the difference is.

Trillian guys still take it forward, right ? AFAIK despite attempts from Y! to trump non-official clients someone does post a workaround. I don't know if its indeed to libyahoo.
There's a whole load of functionality in mainline Y! thats not there in libyahoo. These days I even find it difficult to add new users under gaim. I have to do it in windows so it shows on serverlist. Then pip back to linux. Bad but have no time to look into the problem. I think libyahoo is falling back wrt official client.
Its always a catch up game. I know because I see some interesting debates for samba for which I currently develop.

trillian doesn't use libyahoo2. Note the 2 at the end. libyahoo2 is different from libyahoo. libyahoo stopped working in March 2001.

But they do post the changes to libyahoo2. I did read that somewhere on the www.
gaim doesn't use libyahoo2.
Oh. Then bad Gaim. :)
But you haven't use libyahoo2.
I've not ? Even if I didn't use gaim ?

Y!, AOL like to trump non-official clients all the time. I faced it. And prayed for a fix like everyone else. Cerulian guys were the first to offer a fix all around the place including gaim, koepete and the two dozen IMs around.
And for the interested, more info from gaim on what Y! protocol it uses - http://gaim.sourceforge.net/faq.php#q70

But gaim is not libyahoo2 and libyahoo2 is not gaim. libyahoo2 is based on gaim, but the fork happened a long time ago and there has been little code going back since then.

Nope. They sometimes let the gaim folks know about changes.
gaim doesn't use libyahoo2.

Other way round then ;)
Quote : libyahoo2 is derivative of the yahoo module from gaim.
So does it sync with gaim for problems ? Or is it ahead of gaim Y! module ?

After the initial fork, there has been no gaim code moved into libyahoo2. The two proceed in completely parallel development trains. For example, libyahoo2 has webcam support, gaim doesn't. gaim has userpic support, libyahoo2 doesn't.
libyahoo2 is being worked on by a bunch of people who maintain their own messenger programs (eg: Miranda, CenterICQ, ayttm).

what are you talking about? I was using gaim 1.1 till recently on my FC2 system and I've had no problems while doing anything on Y! I've upgraded it to 1.5 and I haven't noticed any problems either...

Try changing profiles. Or using a different profile when chatting with someone on gaim. If that was not enough there are extensions like avatar which afaik is not handled nicely. And regarding adding users to Y! list, gaim gave me problems. The user was added locally and not to the server list. This might have been handled in gaim 2.0, am not sure. But with default one that comes with Ubuntu, I've faced this problem since hoary. Try going stealth with gaim for selective users in gaim Y!. Oh and did I mention that gaim somehow "buffers" the message resulting in a text message lag. I don't have this problem with official client. I've faced this problem in various networks and isps. And its not n/w latency. :)
Haven't had the time to pin-point the problem and file a proper report with gaim / libyahoo.
There are things that gaim / libyahoo can do and cannot. Above are few of them.
