Hi,
My Pentium 4 system is officially declared dead. I wish to replace it with a Core 2 Duo system. I wanted to know which motherboards are compatible with Linux. I would like to go in for a genuine Intel motherboard. The processor I am thinking of is Intel Core 2 Duo E6300/6400/6600/6700. I dont know which motherboard is most compatible with Linux ( FC5/6 ) specifically.
The only Intel boards I could find were: - DG965RYCK - DG965WHMKR
What would be the cost of the entire system with 512MB / 1GB of DDR2 RAM?
My search on the Intel site came up with this ( Three matching boards for my requirements ):
http://indigo.intel.com/mbsg/compare.aspx?orgID=16&aryAttrID=243%2c247%2...
Please let me know of the cost and place where I can get it at the cheapest. Most importantly I need the board to work out of the box with Linux :)
ciao!
( A special cry of help to Rony!! :) )

I don't know the above codes for the Core2 but the ones we give to our clients are Pentium Duo 2.8, 3 and 3.4 GHz processors respectively. The Intel Original 102 GGC mobo goes with all three processors. 102 ggc comes with ATI Radeon display chips. I have tried either Kubuntu 6.06 or Knoppix 5 on a P4 3Hz single core with 102 GGC board. I did not go into details but I got good screen resol. and starting sound. I will try again on a visit to a client and give better feedback. Let me know if the processors are what you are looking for. 102 GGC is not compatible with Sony optical drives so you will have to settle for LG/Liteon. Though the dealer does mention a latest Sony DVD writer thats compatible with 102 ggc. Never tried it.

Hi rony, the processor you're talking about is not Core 2 Duo but it is Pentium D ( Dual Core Pentium 4 processors ). They are a completely different ball game. Core 2 Duo is the desktop version of the Core Duo processor which is based on the Pentium-M architecture. It runs much more cooler and gives a higher throughput.
Hi Dinesh, I picked up a core2duo with a original intel board. Has one ide port though and a sata port. Problem installing will be that none of the older versions of linux are supported. I got ubuntu currently but I think that any disto kernel version greater than 2.6.16 should wrk I guess you will be going to install fedora6. Try it it should work Fed 5 gave me a prob and I was not about to hack anaconda to make it work.

Can you give me the details of the system? The board's number, the processor's spec ( E6X00 replace the X with 3,4,6,7 ) and the RAM that you're using with it. Also how much did it cost you and where did you get the system from? Any contact details of the dealer?
Thanks a lot.

Hi. Are you planning to run a server or high end graphics compared to your existing P4 that konked out? Otherwise why spend so much money on Core2. Dual core 2.8 + 102 ggc will cost less than 10K. 102ggc has 4 SATA and 2 PATA ports.

Heating is the biggest consideration. Dual Core i.e. Pentium D is just like 2 Prescott core stuck to each other while Core 2 Duo is much more power efficient, runs MUCH more cooler than Pentium D. Anyway, the government is asking us to save the power bills. And besides this the project that I am currently working on requires uber 1337 processing abilities thats why the high processing requirements + 1GB of RAM...

My friend bought the board, pretty good. Except for the fact that I like nvidia and that I'd be worried about future support because ATI is now AMD.
