Hi,
Is it just me or is that Rony really gets slugged a lot everytime he mentions Windows on this list.
* I attended my first LUG Meet yesterday. There was a demo on Eclipse from some heads from IBM -"Open Source" is the basis of "ON Demand" business, which made absolutely no sense to me. In the QnA that ensued, someone popped a q asking if their pluggable architect. mimics emacs. The IBM guy apparently did not know his Open source that well and he popped the magic question 'Is emacs open source?' (uproar-jeering-chaos for someone who sure is not coming back for an encore). Linux in India lacks general awareness.
* The PDF Viewer crashed twice right there in the session. So it's not as if Linux apps don't crash.
* My windowsXP boots faster than SUSE 9.1. This could be another area for Linux to improve on for laptop users.
* Maybe I'm too stupid to use Linux (or MS turned my brain to mush), but I'd prefer a single installation file that works out of the box rather than zips that go "Segmentation fault" when I try to run the app. It does not matter whether I have Linux source, I wouldn't know how to fix it. This is one area where I feel Windows scores in rakin in the people.
* There seems to be too much infighting with distros on this side (drivers released for x version for Distro A.. other distro users make yer own. It's open source. OR Buy Linux compatible hardware.)
* Virus-wise I still feel it's because no one's interested as of now + a better base-system than MS. As long as stuff is made by humans, there will always be others who can break in.
* Linux scores in the 'under the hood' department but is still yet to reach 'prime time' status.
If there's some fine print that I missed, 'LUG Members need to be anti-MS zero-tolerance holier-than-thou fanatics', I'll be glad to step out; just let me know. Repeating a favourite quote 'The only reason that I can see this far is because I'm standing on the shoulders of giants'. Instead of bashing windows left and right, recognize the good aspects and take it to the next level. As a user, I don't care as to what goes on/runs underneath.. as long as it does what it supposed to do. no more no less.
Finally to end my tirade, as Rocky Balboa said 'Hit me !' Gishu

Who said LINUX doesnot crash. I try to open my favourite movie in LINUX using Xine, it crashes. If you say we have to use the latest version of the software. Ahaan !!.. First of all , Isn't Linux supposed to work seamlessly without the hassle of updating regularly. If updating regularly is what we are supposed to do, then why is WINDOZE cursed upon for need to regularly updated.

same with me too. Do they expect everyone of the LINUX user's to be coders or would-be coders. No simple user would like to spend time debugging the error codes.

You got the point Rony thought of before. I believe in it too. But our fellow LUG members. M$-bashers don't seem understand. They are just too busy bashing M$ and putting across LINUX as a champion.

Hit me too !! If I hurt some one.

difference between security updates and nice to have updates.

It's not.

apt-get install is hard? How about synaptic? That gives you a pretty GUI you can click on.

badly written apps crash. no one ever said that apps on linux don't crash. what we say is that linux doesn't crash if an app crashes.

so did you install a SuSE desktop or a custom install? Chances are you have many servers set up to start at system startup. Configure these to not start.

but I'd prefer a single installation file that works out of the box
apt-get install package-name rpm -Uvh package-name
not been looking eh?

what do you do when a windows app crashes? try doing the same thing when a linux app crashes. If you want to compare two things, compare them under the same conditions.

it's just harder for a virus to do much on a unix system.

if windows works for you, use windows. no one is twisting your arm to make you use linux.

Too many distros shift the focus. Learning time is longer. Compatibility becomes more complex.

Technically linux is *the best* but its iterfacing with humans needs to be simpler. Eg. MTNL has the best technological resources but their human interface is apalling and causes it to be unpopular.
if windows works for you, use windows. no one is twisting your arm to make you use linux.
Please don't mis-understand the feedback. It is only meant to make linux more friendly and popular. You guys are definately doing a wonderfull job and thank you for this site. Just stop bashing windows or their users.
Regards,
Rony.

and I ask you not to club all linux users and linux developers into a single group. One or two people may bash windows and windows users. They are not representative of the community as a whole. Many linux developers have probably not used windows long enough to make judgements about the OS or its users. OTOH, many have worked on more operating systems than most people will ever hear of in their lifetimes, and they understand good design when they see it, and try to incorporate it into their own designs.
Linux developers do not ask for help from anyone, least of all, hardware vendors. All they ask is that no one do anything to deliberately prevent them from doing their work.

My point exactly. No need to bash M$ Windoze everytime someone mentions it. But I do find that many linux forums, mailing list generally do keep bashing Windoze when it's unnecessary.

Disclaimer: Dinesh Joshi is a dedicated GNU/Linux user and even though it may seem that he is supporting Windoze he really isn't. It's all in your imagination.

Many IBMers who speak and give presentations don't know a thing about what they're talking. And you might want to re-phrase you last sentence to "People in India lack general..."

Oh they do... but they take everything down with them. I was attending this demo in my past-life where some MS executives were showed how SQLServer integrates tightly with WindowsNT. No marks for guessing what happened to WindowsNT when SQLServer crashed.

Perhaps... you need to start lesser services at boot time by disabling any you don't need.

Wrong statement. Learn first.

If you are just interested in getting your work done without wondering about the "how", boss, you are seriously treading the wrong turf.
