Is it ok if I install Fedora Core 5 using my computer on my friend's hard disk drive? Would my friend be able to use the OS once, he plugs it back to his system?
My computer configuration is completely different than his

It's likely that it won't work out of the box. I'd recommend setting it up to boot into run level 3 by default. The major problem would be with X configuration, so once it boots into run level 3 on his computer, reconfigure X with the right display driver, and switch back to run level 5.
kudzu should take care of everything else.

you may want to trim your signature to be just about 2-3 lines long.

Thats the least of his problems. Soundcard, Disk controller ( incase hes using RAID ) and other peripherals behave quite weirdly if you switch the configuration.
For some reason FC5's hw detection is better during the installation then post install i.e. using Kudzu.
OP, why can't you install it directly on his PC?

u cant directly boot from it.. but you can extract a boot floppy image and boot from the floppy using the image on HD.

i've done this several times ... cuz some of my friends dont have cdroms or for packages... it is very much possible. U gotta install grub and configure other settings by hand ... best way is to chroot into the installed system and do all the configuration ...
If u have tried installing a gentoo system from stage 1 or 2 ... u'll be pretty comfortable with the procedure..
u might have to run the first boot service in fedora... to do that u'll haveto go through the script and find out which file firstboot checks and delete it!
display can be configured once in runlevel 3 by system-config-display... if that doesnt work then move ur old xorg.conf and try with an empty one.
