The 1st Americas Social Forum (ASF) was held in Quito, Equador from 25th to 30th July. The ASF is part of the World Social Forum (WSF), which was initiated in 2001 and has become the world’s largest venue for NGOs and individuals who are critical of the current state of the world.
The slogan of ASF was "Another World is Possible". This slogan has drawn over 10,000 people from more than 45 countries to take part in conferences, seminars, workshops, and cultural events. Globalization, the privatization of water, and communication rights in the information society were some of the primary issues being discussed.
Environmentalists, members of sexual minorities, trade unionists, grassroots community activists and students formed part of the mosaic of expressions of civil society drawn to Quito from the entire southern Americas.
The ASF also enabled to assess the imposition of a neo-liberal model of globalisation by means of free trade agreements and the installation of U.S. military bases in Latin America.

No, this is nothing illegal. We are looking for someone (a white hat?) who can hack into a proprietary Linux kernel (this is an entertainment device) in order to install basic utilities such as an FTP server (we already have the servers and other pieces written). This device has been hacked by others but existing methods involve removing the hard disk, plugging the disk into a computer, mounting it etc... We need to be able to do it over a network, without requiring the user to take anything apart.
This could be a employee or consultant arrangement. For someone who can deliver, we are prepared to pay well ("mooh mange inaam"), within reason of course. :-)
Please contact me directly at anilgupte@maxnetwork.com

Are you sure you even know what that means?

Linux kernel is not proprietary. It is free software.

Linux is free software licensed under the GNU GPL, which means if you make any modifications to it, the modifications have to be distributed with the binary as well. In the past Linksys has violated the GPL by not doing so and has had to comply with the license. I hope that you are not doing the same and violating the GPL. (your description of Linux as proprietary seems to suggest that). Same applies to other free software licensed under GPL.
Hello Luggers,
Yeh, the subject of the mail has been intentionally concieved to mislead. Our pre-concieved notions, our home grown ideas......calling others to be gpl compliant, picking on those who were in your position when you were at the bottom of the fsf/os learning curve just goes to show our apathy to those humble souls who have come to seek help.
As soon as someone asks for help he/she gets slammed up the nose for being incorrect, a wrong posting/displaying wrong ethics...the list just goes on and on. A list *IS* the voice of our movement and the values we stand up for....what each one of you does and says here will be counted for/against what we all stand up for.
Bickering/picking time and again just gives the opposition more ammunition against us and our outlook.
Why not welcome suggestions/brickbats/accusations/mistakes/wrong posts/incorrect_subject lines. If you care....write a personal mail to the person off this list telling him/her about what you think.
This list cannot and will not be an umbrella for fanaticism of any kind. We have to learn to me moderate and tolerable. Treating polotical voilence/suppression with non-voilence gave india what you and i treasure the most. Lets learn something from old frail man with a vision who none of us can match but look up to.
These are my thoughts.......we are more than a list..a movement.

I think I agree with you, Trevor. Everyone appreciates thoughtful mails but if one has to be cautious and politically correct every time, the charm of being part of a lively community is lost. A friendly community should be tolerant of minor mistakes and differences of opinion.

I guess the 'proprietary' kernel isn't theirs anyway. Or they'd just ask their developers to do the (trivial) modifications they're looking for.
In which case, doing something illegally with something already illegal isn't all that illegal.
