It could include
1) Running Linux on handhelds - HP iPaq demo by Rajeev RK (because, this wasn't included in the past GLUG-Meet [Dec]). Please confirm, Mr. Rajeev
2) Mr. JTD's suprise, that he intends to show us.

3) (could be Your contribution /talk ?)
Are the meets traditionally held on Sundays? why?
Assuming most of the members are free (and free to attend) on Sundays. Also, *I guess*, the location (more commonly, HBCSE) is available on Sunday.

The January GLUG-meet could be on 7th, 14 or 21st or 28 (Sundays ;) )
We'll probably keep a note of Feb 4, for the Feb GLUG-Meet :)

eek. That was supposed to be humour. Besides Philip is in B'lore.

14th would be out because of the free map workshop. We could meet at HBCSE but i doubt anyone would be interested in a talk after a full day of GIS.

dream on :-)
you might ``just" end up with a cup of tea :-)
My office has a nice conference room (methinks 20-25 capacity) and i can provide a projector and bandwidth (we are a datacenter after all). Tea/Coffee/Soup/Lemon Tea is freely available, rest can be arranged for.
Unfortunately 21st is a 'not in bombay' situation for me, so maybe next month.
cheers, - dhawal

Before someone starts flames you, I'll answer and recommend you to _not_ post questions that seem to be Abbreviations or computer terms, that you hear for the first time.
GIS stands for Geographic Information System.
I'll tell you how you can find out information that you want.
1. For cases such as the above, you can use Google (and type define:GIS in the textbox.
2. Use Wikipedia (if you are not against it)
3. Use other search engines that you like (Yahoo!, Rediff etc.)

Err. Not exactly. GIS is information specific to a geographical region. GPS is a tool that merely provides you coordinates of your current location. You can use your gps coords to extract info about your current location from a GIS server. Most common is name of the location. Knowing your coords 31.62004 74.87638 does not really tell you that u are at the golden temple Amritsar.

Are there any public map server which translate co-ordinate to location / map for Indian Region?

None Afaik. But with a foss aproach should be fairly easy to map. There are lists of co-ords for many important places in india. Also ihave coords of many areas with locations. Once we get the hang of things at the gis workshop i will be uploading all of that.

No maps. Only satellite imagery. you can go about this in a reverse way. Browse to a known location on google maps and then extract the coords. Eg
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=19.196101,72.987344&ie=U... will show u Shivaji chowk kalwa.
So using a combo of google and local knowledge you can create a fairly decent map.
Again the idiots who are responsible for running this country have masked out many areas because of security. so u cant see these locations in India. But sitting in hamburg u can see everything. God these dolts need a dummies guide to info on the internet. Also they have missed many areas by miles, keeping exposed the actual area to be secured and covering up highways and villages. Looks like they use their arms to survey.

The above url shows a map. a few seconds ago there wasnt one.
Sometime Today, j cobbled together some glyphs to say:
google maps? or google earth?
No maps. Only satellite imagery.
google maps has had maps of Indian cities for about one month now. No driving directions yet, but one ways and landmarks are marked out.

If google earth / google maps doesn't do it well, *probably*, the following URL won't do more good. (I assume, they are using the same API's)
(This may have been posted earlier.)
It probably is, an effort similar to http://www.mapquest.com

Umm, correct. Besides, 14 is sankranti too. 21st seems to be approved by Mr. Rajeev. The second talk (joke) is out! and there's no third talk.
So where are we heading to? (Just one topic)
(Where's Anurag? Anurag hasn't posted any feedback on this discussion so far :-?)
