How about an Ilug-bom IRC channel ?

Hi Luggers, I was wondering if we could have an ilug-bom IRC channel. After corresponding with The_Linuxer, who informed me that Pune LUG has their own channel called #Pluggies on Freenode(used to be called Openprojects), I thought it might be a good idea to have an IRC # for our very own ilug-bom. The_Linuxer has already registered the channel #ilug-bom on freenode. This channel might help because this way people can get instantaneous replies to their queries. Also this might help a lot of the organizers/hosts (for various events) correspond in real time. Also considering that many luggers now have access to the internet 24/7, I think this # will remain populated throughout. I know this sounds redundant and one might say that there are enough #s on IRC which do troubleshooting of problems. However, since we have a fairly large user base now, I think that it might help to have our own litte niche on IRC :). U r indeed very perceptive about the trivial nature of ur questions. This is very complex and requires a thorough understanding of the RTAI kernel, device drivers, assembly, Plastics, motors, robotics etc. But i will try to xplain briefly. 1) load the rtai kernel (http://www.aero.polimi.it/~rtai/) 2) RTFM 3) Purchase three stepper motors, 12 bd139, 3 bd140 transistors, one max232, one 8051, assorted resistors and capacitors, one 12mhz crystal. 4) RT all the above FMs 5) Purchase one steel rod 30cm long, gears, plastic discs, rubber rings. Ask for the manuals. and RTFM. 6) rig up the parts in 3 to create a 3 axis stepper motor driver. 7) rig up parts in 5 to create a moving arm 8) connect rig of 6 with rig of 7. connect to serial port of pc. 9) write driver to operate resultant of eight 10) test and run. Voila u have a linux based automatic printer catridge changer. U may provide a gui interface to manually change the catridge and setup various options like change catridge , dont change catridge, operate with empty catridge etc. A Windows based design might be a very good idea as the users are a little hardware challenged. > > thanx 4 all the help! Sound (Via 8233A AC'97 Onboard) issues

Hello everybody, I'm using SuSE 8.0 Professional(courtesy "thelinuxer"/B.Ghose). It is giving me trouble with my onboard sound. I have a Via Chipset (8233A) MoBo with AC'97 onboard sound. Linux seems to have picked this up okay (8233_ac97) but there's no sound at all. A recent reinstall (for another purpose) found the system locking up on the KDE splash screen unless sound was disabled from the BIOS. The boot-up messages show it as detected and started okay. Would there be a difference between 8233 and 8233A sound drivers? I have the RedHat drivers with my MoBo CD. Please advise, D Burman. But I assume you meant to use it in reference to a majority. If that's the case, then you are grossly mistaken. J. Random user, most likely, does NOT have any clue as to what Linux is. Or if he does know about alternatives to Windows, then he is most likely mistaken as to what the nature of these alternatives is. He probably thinks that these alternatives to Windows, barring Macintosh OSs, are very "geeky" in nature and can be used only hackers and developers. It is this perception that needs to be changed. Configuring Sound and USB Printer for Debian

Hi, I have Debian 3.0 woody installed. Everything else is cool but I can't configure my soundcard. My SoundCard is Crystal Audio Codec (as detected in Windows 98) on an Intel 810. But I haven't yet found the right driver for Linux. I have tried variations by Crystal Semiconductors like Crystal SoundFusion and a couple of others but they don't work at all. Please help me with this. Also I need to know how to install a USB printer. I have a 2.4 Kernel and I DID install USB support (apparently the earlier versions don't support USB), but I don't know what to do next. Siddhesh.
