sir I recently installed linux 8.0 But facing some problems: 1. Unable to detect modem 2. Unable to access data of windows from linux and vice-versa 3. Where to do programming unable to find editor etc. 4. where are files of linux source code stored as it as open source software 5. Linux automatically boots after 7 seconds. Can this setting be changed Would be thankful if you could solve some of my these basic queries Yours sincerely dhiraj

Hello luggers, good-evening. We are sincerely looking forward towards conducting a workshop at iiit-b hubli for the benefit of 50 students who have taken up gnu-linux projects and need URGENT hand-holding. In addition we have about 7 engineering colleges in and around hubli who would be interested in participating in the same. I am quite taken up with my responsibilities. I would be glad is someone could come forward and help co-ordinate the event. We have to keep in mind that roping in luggers from goa-belgaum-bombay-kolhapur is a priority. Hoping for a positive response from you all. Wine error

Hi.... I'm running debian v. 3.0. I mounted local W98 partition. I installed wine from LFY CD. It serched the Windows directory and configured the wine. But I'm getting error... libntdll.dll.so not found or not a file or a directory...., where as ntdll.dll.so is softlinked as libntdll.dll.so and it is in valid path... what could be the reason...? Unable to access data of windows from linux and vice-versa How did you try to access the windows partition.You should know in which partition windows is installed and then try to mount that partition(e.g suppose i have hda1 as my primary windows partition(C: drive) give the command mount /dev/hda1 mountpoint(any dir), and if it still complains try to give the type of the partition(VFAT,NTFS etc) with the mount command.) You should have the module support/builtin for the required partition type in the kernel before doing this.try doing cat /proc/filesystems to see the supported filesystems. >3. This sets a timeout (in tenths of a second) for keyboard input.If no key is pressed for the specified time, the first image is automatically booted. you can also change the default image to load by this parameter default=name of the label u have given(e.g linux/dos/windows etc) rohit Life is a sexually transmitted disease. hi deepali, i can help you as much i can on mails, but iam not a guru on the topic though.You will find the links iam sending with this mail REALLY helpful.If u face any other problems then let me know. very good for writing a basic filesystem http://www.cc.gatech.edu/classes/AY2002/cs3210_fall/p5/p5.html another site to understand the basic VFS layer http://www.cc.gatech.edu/classes/AY2002/cs3210_fall/p5/p5.html this is the list of filesystems under development http://www.falconweb.com/~mattg/linuxfs/ You have to do some digging, but to do look at the code of ramfs/romfs(/usr/src/linux/fs/ramfs or romfs) to get the knowledge of how to write a simple linux filesystem module. [OT]Suggestions for a Notebook

Hi I am looking to buy a notebook(my first one) and am sort of confused. The sort of specs I am looking at are (for a minimum): 1. 1.7 GHz Celeron 2. 256M RAM(expandable to quite a lot) 3. Some sort of 4x agp 4. 30G hdd 5. Internal combo cd/dvd/writer 6. Should be decently compatible with *nix...I will be on a LAN, so modem support is not really important, though it would be a plus if it were supported. My budget would be something around $1200... Can listers suggest a few models/makes that have decent support in India? and any other points that i need to be aware of before buying?

hi-- The Dell Inspiron and Toshiba Satellite (which I own) are good buys for that price.I dont know about the availability of both those though back in India.Dell sells laptops here in the US only thru their website. they have good support for Linux.I have Mdk 9.0 running on my Toshiba Satellite 1400-S105 (1.2GHz celeron,256 megs ram, 30gb hdd, Intel EEpro ethernet card,CyberAlladin-T video accelerator card).The internal modem doesnt work on Linux.but i have no issues otherwise. also you might want to think about the Apple I-book, the entry level ones are sub 1000$.how about installing Linux PPC? regards -Nikhil >I am looking to buy a notebook(my first one) and am sort of confused.
