INDIA: Free Software, Free Society: Conference on Freedom in ComputingDevelopment and Culture

http://fsfs.hipatia.net/ Free Software, Free Society 28th -30th May, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India. The Free Software, Free Society (FSFS) Conference, organized by Government and civil society organizations from Brazil, Italy, Venezuela and India, is scheduled for 28-30 May 2005 in the Southern Indian city of Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), the capital of the province of Kerala. The Conference is primarily an attempt to initiate a South-South-North dialogue on the use of Free Software as a useful paradigm for non-software realms and its role as an instrument for development. In the process, the countries involved will share their perspective and experiences in using Free Software. Vision Over two-and-a-half decades, Free Software has inspired an alternative approach to creation, use and redistribution of software. The values of Free Software has been the inspiration for other kind of intellectual content as well, as illustrated, for example, by the Creative Commons initiative. Located at the intersection of Free Software, Development and Society, the FSFS Conference will examine the application of the Free Software model for the purpose of evolving more equitable development and information sharing models for humanity. In particular, the Conference will discuss the use of Free Software for addressing issues of technology access and the digital divide and also develop further the alternative paradigms for sharing intellectual content. Participation and Registration Apart from the Brazilian delegation (4 delegates), Venezuela (20 delegates) and the Italian delegation (3 delegates) about 40-50 delegates from various parts of India are also expected to attend the programme. In addition, delegates from South Asia (Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh) and from UN organizations are expected to attend the programme. A delegate fee of Rs. 1000 (for Indian citizens) or US$ 50 (for non-Indian delegates) is payable by delegates in order to cover the costs of the Conference. Delegate fee includes Conference kit, food during the conference, participation in sessions and cultural programmes. Delegate fee does not include travel or local accommodation. However, accommodation can be arranged by us on request on direct payment basis. A wide range of hotel rooms are available from budget (INR 500 / US$ 25) to luxury (INR 4500 / US$ 150). Newbie questions

I am not an actual newbie to GNU/linux, but definitely to this group. Whenever, I read the messages that I receive through the mailing list, I am shocked and cannot speak at all. What I find is mostly issues that are based and faced in larger companies with huge amount of network complexity and databases. I have not been posting regularly to this mailing list and I hope I will start posting messages or attempt replies to wherever I can ... Please suggest what else can I do the help people using GNU/Linux. Secondly, being a student, can I attend the meetings conducted in the group. The most important thing that got them here today is the 'Culture'... a concept of a organisation which is a family to the employees. The company expects the employee to be with them life-long and the employee feels that the employer would take care for the same period. If you had taxes as in Japan, you would be switching FMs faster than FM channels but Japanese don't complain. Unfortunately we have adopted the American way of running towards the most money.. SAMBA config

Hi All, I am using Samba to let my LINUX server to be accessed by my WINDOZE PC's. I have it configured to use share level config and use it as a Domain Controller. It works fine, but I would like it to automount the shares whenever a user logs in to the network. It is possible in a WINDOZE NT or 2000 setup by using login scripts. But is it possible to use it in LINUX environment i.e. by using SAMBA. Everytime I have to manually map it thru Net Neighbourhood or check the option of Auto Mapping so that it is available in the next login. It helps, but I want to control which user can access which share. The share available to the user shall appear mapped whenever he/she logs in. I think you all understand my point. If not, let me know. Any help is highly appreciated. regards, rc

I would like to know if there is any package available in GNU/Linux which is similar to ProE which we use for designing in Mechanical Engineering.. postfix attch size limit

Hi ya all, We are using postfix as our smtp server. The mails are relayed across 12 different server using maps integrated to openldap. I have this requirement where in we need certain users to receive and send mails attachments more than the default as set by message_size_limit parameter. SSH hacking attempts

Hi All, Since past 2 days I am getting SSH login attempts at a rate of 1 attempt per second from different IPs. I believe its a script based attack to beark-in. How can I setup a security where-in I restrict max SSH login attempts from any IP to just 2 per minute. If this limit is breached, start to drop packets from the source_ip for 10 minutes... Request for pointers to learn this protection. Thank you in advance. regards, Vai
