[OT] Unlimited broadband

Hi, It seems that BSNL has launched an unlimited 256Kbps connection(http://bsnl.co.in/newsdetailed.php?news_id=296). The cost is 900 bucks a month and it includes a landline at zero rental. MTNL has also launched its version of unlimited 256Kbps connection at 1399 bucks a month. Unlimited connection mean no caps on data or time and an always on connection. Now why are the Mumbai subscribers being left behind? Hopefully they should be launching an unlimited scheme soon. Anyway, the reason for this post is that I see many people using MTNL Triband connections. I was wondering if they could give me some heads up on the quality of Triband. I have heard that their upside is that they good speeds & uptime but their down side is pathetic customer care. Is that correct? On a 256K connection do you guys get constant 30-32KBps speeds or do they drop? Is anyone using Airtel DSL? They have a similar scheme and are probably launching in our area in about a month or so. But I've seen that the general opinion about airtel is that they have good CC & availability but bad speeds. For me, availability, speeds matter a lot. CC comes later but I surely dont want to run to the Prabhadevi exchange everytime something goes wrong with my connection / router. I simply dont have the time or inclination to visit their exchanges. What say you guys? Any good / bad experiences? Tips? Please let me know. -- Dinesh A. Joshi

Oh, I forgot to mention this! They also give you a free email account (4 MB). The interface of this is pretty simple, clean and soothing. It took two weeks for TRIBAND to be activated for me , after registration. I have been using since October 2005, and its really good. Installation charges are 500 - one time installment (for router) 300 - DSL testing and installation (in the first month's bill). One the LINE is ready for TRIBAND, they call up and inform that they are testing for ADSL line, and then send a person who would get along the ADSL router and configure the internet! __________________________________________________________ Yahoo! I get speeds of 25 KB/sec - 30 KB/sec most of the times. For a few downloads, at times, it runs down to 16 KB/sec. >What say you guys? Any good / bad experiences? Tips? > Please let me know. I have heard of their customer service as "bad" and claims are made that they have absolutely "NO knowledge" about GNU/Linux! That is true! But I have heard of bad experiences of triband users from the western suburbs of Mumbai (Khar, Santacruz; for example) But I suppose, it shouldn't be difficult to configure the LAN card in GNU/Linux or leave it to DHCP! In my experience of customer service, I faced a problem once of not being able to open any website due to a faulty PVC connection, it was solved pretty systematcially over 1504. I was using Firefox to do the configurations, and to my suprise, the lady on the other side of the phone, knew what "Firefox" is! (wow!). Hi, I am a member of a certain Yahoo Group called LinuxVadapav. (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LinuxVadapav/). Yesterday (or maybe the day before), one of the members posted the entire RHCE examination paper to the group. Take a look at this: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/linuxvadapav/message/1369 This kind of activity is very damaging. This is not just an issue of someone posting the paper on the internet, but I know of 'institutes' where students are given the paper to study before they give the exam. This degrades the value of the certificate and should be stopped. I hope people on this list take notice of this. extended desktop

Hi , My friend have some problem with "extended desktop" . ___ I have a laptop with 915g express chipset. I have enbled dual head using system-config-display Dual head is woking but second secreen is clone of first. even after enbaling xinerama and disabling clone it is still showing clone on sencond monitor. I have changed the resolution of second screen(800x600) by editing xorg.conf. But it still showing exact clone of first moniter (1024x768). 3D Rendering Drivers.

Hello All, At the linux meet at HBCSE Rajeev had given a very nice demo of the new display drivers of linux that are well suited for 3D rendering. One application demonstrated was a 3D file browser that works like a walk through into a room with files and folders shaped like 3D objects. This type of 3D walk through has tremendous potential for corporate films and demos. Future operating manuals for electronic equipment could also be in 3D form. One important potential for this is in the shopping mall industry. Instead of visitng a crowded mall, getting trolleys entangled and walking for a few hours, an exact replica of the mall can be made available to the customers in the form of a CD or DVD depending on the content size. The mall walk through will have features like virtually removing the product from its shelf and turning it around to examine it. A more advanced feature may also allow the virtual shopper to open the jars or boxes and see the actual content inside, something the mall will not allow otherwise. The software can be made available as a direct installation or to make it platform independent and live, it can be made into a live linux distro that does not do anything except detect minimum hw like kb, mouse, usb and concentrates fully on providing the maxiimum video and sound drivers and the actual application that will run live. Help on SoundCard Detection on RHL 9.2

Hi ! I have just installed Red Hat Linux 9.2 . i have a problem with Sound Card Detection. When i click on System Settings > Sound Card Detection , it says "NO Sound Cards were Detected" i have an Intel 865 MB with on board Sound. Hi, The GNU/Linux Users Group of National Institute of Technology, Hamirpur is now accessible at http://www.glug-nith.org/. It is still early days and a lot of things are left to be done. One thing we have not yet put is a copyright notice. Since we have taken a few sentences here and there from Wikipedia and http://www.gnu.org/, would that be an infringement of copyright? Or do we need to give Wikipedia's name in the credit and mention that they hold the rights. Secondly, will it be ok to distribute RHEL ISOs on the site? It is our understanding that since Linux is GPL'ed it should not be a problem, although Redhat's support would not be available. Are we correct? Bye, Debarshi
