Hi,
I was installing Ubuntu for my fiancee and found a strange little
problem when configuring her network. Her IP address is 172.20.x.x and
her gatway is 10.10.10.2. Ubuntu cried out loud about the gateway not
being part of the network and didn't let me configure that way.
What I did was add a startup script that added a direct route to the
gateway first and then added the default gateway just after the
interface is initialized (I removed the gateway line from
/etc/network/interfaces). While this works, this seemed a very ugly
fix to me. This odd network setting "Just Works" on Windows.
Is there an easier way to do this that I'm missing out on? I've also
tried adding the "up route add..." line in /etc/network/interfaces.
That doesn't seem to work.
Thanks,
Siddhesh

Well it seems you are an expert after all. Adding the "/" and
tinckering with the timeout value in yum.conf has got YUM working for
me.

No I do not think so, since wget is working absolutely fine, and so is Firefox.

OLPC is not useful for the target audience. Classrooms and teachers is
what we need. according to the HR development mandarins.
-- "It may actually be detrimental to the growth of creative and
analytical abilities of the child," the secretary added. Classrooms
and teachers were more urgently needed than "fancy tools,"
Never mind that the schools already built exist on paper and the
teachers are pure vapour. Same old logic about radio, tv and phones
being luxury products "we need drinking water and medicine" went the
refrain in a thankfully bygone era.

Hi All
I need help on URL rewriting under Apache 2.0.x. I need to do following :
a) When following request is received by Apache
http://127.0.0.1:85/spot?s=25&format=text/html
it should be rewritten and called as
http://100.100.100.100:85/spot?s=111&format=text/html
with the following settings in my httpd.conf I am able to get ip address changed but no luck with the s=25 to s=111. I am running out of time and can anybody guide as I am not too good with regular expression.
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^/(.+) http://100.100.100.100:85/$1
</IfModule>

Well, it was neither your name nor your email. I do have the
permission to provide his email ID on this list. Comments like these
are not needed and should be avoided in the aftermath of the horrible
flame wars and OT mails that flooded the list.

I am using Fedora Core 5, and am behind a Squid proxy. I have set the
http_proxy, ftp_proxy variables in /etc/profile as:
export http_proxy="http://mmh3:mmh3@172.16.16.2:3128"
export https_proxy="http://mmh3:mmh3@172.16.16.2:3128"
export ftp_proxy="http://mmh3:mmh3@172.16.16.2:3128"
export socks_proxy="http://mmh3:mmh3@172.16.16.2:3128"
My /etc/wgetrc looks like:
#http_proxy = http://proxy.yoyodyne.com:18023/
#ftp_proxy = http://proxy.yoyodyne.com:18023/
use_proxy = on
Since the proxy variables are already set in /etc/profile I have not
set them here. Moreover wget can successfully download files from the
Internet.
My /etc/yum.conf looks like:
[main]
proxy=http://172.16.16.2
proxy_username=mmh3
proxy_password=mmh3
cachedir=/var/cache/yum
keepcache=0
debuglevel=2
logfile=/var/log/yum.log
pkgpolicy=newest
distroverpkg=redhat-release
tolerant=1
exactarch=1
obsoletes=1
gpgcheck=0
plugins=1
metadata_expire=1800
timeout=7
However I get:
[rishi@Sunflower ~]$ sudo yum list
Loading "installonlyn" plugin
Setting up repositories
updates [1/4]
http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/updates/5/i386/repo…:
[Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (-3, 'Temporary failure in name

Error: failure: repodata/repomd.xml from updates: [Errno 256] No more

[rishi@Sunflower ~]$
The same XML file
http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/updates/5/i386/repo…
can be successfully downloaded by wget and seen by Firefox. So why the
error?

Oh..that is way back!

Shouldn't they be? Perhaps, this will create more
awareness among college students atleast.

Is there any "fixed" place for the lug meet? Just
curious

Hello all,
Greetings from the Linux For You magazine team!
As you all know, two months ago we launched a new initiative called
CommunitySpeak where we pose a question to various ILUG mailing lists
and publish the top five responses (selected by our technical editors)
in the magazine. Thanks to all those who responded to last month's
question. The best among the responses received are to be published in
the August 2006 issue of LFY. We have contacted the chosen respondents
off-list.
This month we have chosen the topic: "What does one gain from
participating in an open source project that he/she does not gain from
a regular work environment?"
What's your take on this? Our eyes and ears are wide open and we are
waiting to listen to your views. Please write to us at
writetojanani(a)gmail.com with a CC to atul.goel(a)efyindia.com, before
5th August 2006.
The top five responses will be published in the September 2006 issue
of Linux for You.
Look forward to your responses.
Thanks,

Well, I learnt Artificial Neural Networks back in 3rd semester as an
optional subject. One of my classmates (in fact he is my former
roomie), Arjun Shankar <arjunsha(a)gmail.com> started writing a C++
library for ANN. It was very simply written. The project was hosted in
Savannah but the codes are not yet available there due to network
restrictions in our campus proxy.
I hope you will be able to solve your doubts with Arjun's help.
Cheers,
Debarshi
