Ok, this is best news of the day - the first 500 registrants can get the
COMMUNITY PASS, which allows them entry to the
'technology.innovation(a)oss.in' track for FREE (subject to availability
of vacant seats in the main hall and on a first-cum-first-served basis)!
Though there is an element of organisers' checking your details and
approving the serious cases only, but then, if you're serious about
attending International-level Linux/OSS events - then REGISTER NOW at
http://www.linuxasia.net.

Who all are going to speak at LinuxAsia 2007?
*********************************************
Klaus Knopper (Knoppix), Brian Behlendorf (Apache and CollabNet), Dr
Negroponte (one-laptop-per-child programme), are some of the
international technology Gurus who have confirmed. We expect 3-4 more
global luminaries to be there--their confirmation is in progress.
Any facilities for out-station delegates?
*****************************************
We have tied up with 'hospitality partners' who can assist you in
getting best deals for travel and stay. If you need this support, simply
select that option while registering.
What is LinuxAsia trying to achieve this year?
**********************************************
The goals that have been laid down for LinuxAsia 07 are:
Goal #1: Promote open source driven innovation so that India can
showcase a minimum of 20 globally recognised OSS projects at LinuxAsia 2008.
Goal #2: Accelerate the adoption of Linux and open source software by
highlighting their advantages, sharing success stories, and discussing
strategies on how CXOs can gain advantage from both "open source" and
"proprietary" worlds.
Goal #3: To provide a platform where other organisations with
OSS-related agendas can hold their own sub-events and network with the
entire community.
So, we request you to register, participate, and let us know how we
fared in achieving those goals.
Cheers!
Team, LinuxAsia

Dear All:
We plan to organise an intensive two-day workshop on the use of
geographic information systems (GIS) and geospatial web applications
based on Free and Open Source software (FOSS). This public workshop will
be held on SATURDAY 13 JANUARY and SUNDAY 14 JANUARY 2007 at the Homi
Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) in Mumbai.
The objective will be to teach and guide participants through all the
steps of producing an interactive spatial database and web map using the
OSGeo Toolkit. Through the workshop, participants will build their own
Free Map using a combination of open source software, copyleft maps, and
community information.
The workshop is based on the Mumbai Free Map project collaboration, and
is co-organised by the Gnowledge Lab at HBCSE, CRIT (Collective Research
Initiatives Trust), the Free Map Collective and MetaCarta Labs. For more
detailed information about the workshop and any updates to the
programme, please visit http://wiki.freemap.in/moin.cgi/HbcseWorkshop
and to browse the Mumbai Free Map please visit http://mumbai.freemap.in
REGISTRATION
The workshop is free and open to the public. Ideally, participants
should be familiar with the open source software and the Linux operating
system, web client-server architecture, basic database management, and
basic terminal commands -- we hope to cater to different skill sets and
backgrounds. Participants should also have an interest in the use of
OSGeo for their own work and projects.
To register for the workshop, please send an e-mail to
freemapworkshop(a)crit.org.in with your name, address, and contact
information including phone numbers, and a brief description of your
background and your interest in the workshop. Registration will remain
open until WEDNESDAY 10 JANUARY, but please contact us ASAP if you would
like to participate. For more information, please call Shekhar Krishnan
on +91.98200.45529.

We can request cybercafe operators to keep it, either
as a folded A4 sheet (as someone suggested) or
stapled/bound multiple sheets, or as a single sheet A4
poster on the wall.

Hello everyone,
This is for all the coders out there. I have written a small Ruby program to
generate syntax highlighted HTML files from a source file in virtually any
language (ATM Java HTML C++ Python and Ruby). Its still in 0.1 beta and
lacks quite a number of features but is good enough for daily use. I was
wondering if interested people in the community could test it out and give
me feedback.

hi,
if you look at the discussion here:
http://db.glug-bom.org/wiki/index.php/Broadband_Pacenet
you will find that this guy pacenetrules has broken the rule of three
- that is he has deleted matter in the page three times in a row. I
request the sysadmins to deactivate him and prevent him from editing
pages. Please dont boot him - he will just reregister.

Hi,
Can someone with compiz/beryl make a cool looking screenshot in the
cube mode? I'm trying to make a front page design for the brochure.
The requirements are as follows:
* XMMS/Beep Media or some other media player
* A movie in progress, preferably a bollywood movie
* Firefox open with a Linux or GNU site; anything that has the right
words and the Tux logo
* A nautilus/konqueror window with some pictures (in preview mode)
* There should be no terminal program running
* The shot should be high res, preferably in dark colors but clear
looking at the same time.
I have been searching for a screenshot on the net but sadly most
either have a terminal running, or 'microsoft ipod' searches. One even
had Windows 2000 running in VMWare ;-)
I would have done this myself but I am not able to install compiz on my system.

First of all, great job Rony :-) Its not easy trying to say so much in so
few, you certainly have done it. Kudo's to you.
However, there are a couple of things i did some checking on that we could
deliberate upon:
0)In the paragraph ``Why Free and Open Source Software" the word Freedom and
the ethical reasons for why they should be used are very much absent. Not to
mention the dangers of using proprietary software besides viruses, security
problems, and data loss problems.
It is later mentioned that ``Linux is not just software, it is a movement
that was started to empower the people, to empower YOU with full freedom to
create, distribute and use software without getting locked out until you
paid for an 'upgrade' of your commercial software.". The Linux kernel was
NEVER started as a movement, it was started as a student project. The only
movement which started this is the Free Software movement, from which the
Open Source movement offshooted. It was only later that Linus joined up with
the Open Source movement. Linus has also admitted that he would never have
bothered to make the Linux kernel mainstream if GNU had finished their
kernel. This is very much a historical fact.
i have have to really thank you Rony for this, as now it makes perfect sense
why we just cannot refer to the operating system as Linux even for
simplicity.
1)The word Freedom is mentioned in the ``Is Linux widely used?" paragraph
right at the end, that too with an entire paragraph of tech praises
preceding it. If we are mentioning technical excellence, great usability,
and fantastic features everywhere - its only fair to mention the values and
ethics of Freedom, the spirit of Revolution and the undying struggle against
a tyranical order. Such language has caused change and shaped history in the
past through printed books, let your wiki page stir the same passion for
those online.
2)The link you quote http://www.linux.org/ mentions
``Linux<http://www.linux.org/#>is a free Unix-type operating system
originally created by Linus Torvalds
with the assistance of developers around the world." which seems to
contradict(in the newbie readers perspective) what is written on the Wiki.
Moreover the only mention about GNU is with a link on the GPL:
http://www.linux.org/info/gnu.html
in that page to there are two links ``Foundations Software" and ``free
software" both of which point to web ads via some bizweb2000.com site. Why
are we putting such pages as links on our Wiki? It gives a very bad
impression that we are encouraging adware.
3)The term ``Linux" is trademarked to Linus Torvalds and it should be
mentioned. If you are respecting it for Microsoft you can certainly respect
it for Linus.

Hi,
Is it possible that we write an article about GNU/Linux on desktop and
get it published in some of the famous newspapers like Times of India,
DNA, Hindustan Times, etc? It will have to be done by some notable
people since it should be accepted by these papers.
The theme could be that of a myth breaker, showing how Linux is not
difficult to install, better looking, etc. Linux power on servers
should get no more than a mention as the aim is to get desktop users
to use it.
Regards,
