Hello All,
My Kubuntu 6.10 became painfully slow so I decided to trim it and a page
on the web showed 3 ways to edit startup items. Rcconf, file-rc among
them. File-rc conflicted with sysv-rc so I removed it and while doing
so, waved goodbye to most of the main packages. So it was time for a
re-load.
Wanting to give Etch stable a try, a single CD KDE version
ftp://ftp.isu.edu.tw/pub/Linux/Debian/debian-cd/4.0_r1/i386/iso-cd/debian-40r1-i386-kde-CD-1.iso
was downloaded from a Taiwan mirror using 'wget -c url'. I don't know if
the site was the same or another one but it was Taiwanese and among the
first 4 in the list. The system configuration is P4 2.4 Ghz., Intel 845
GEBV2, 256 MB RAM, 80 GB IDE HDD.
Download after 10 pm India is good as Taiwan is sleeping by then.
Installation was absolutely un-eventfull and smooth. Used default
install instead of guiinstall at boot prompt. During the pre-install
setup, it asks whether you want to install packages from the mirror so
select 'No' if you want to reduce your MTNL Triband bill. It will still
look for security mirrors and download about 50-60 MB of security
updates. Video and sound was properly detected by default.
The distro is packed with KDE utilities but does not have Open Office or
KOffice and no CUPS. It comes with Iceweasel which is an avtar of
Firefox. Since mirrors were not selected during install, the apt
/etc/apt/sources.lst file was not having any repo entries except for
security. There was no sudo package, so it was installed using apt-get.
The /etc/sudoers file was edited using 'nano' since 'vi' gave problems.
Then 'vim' was installed using apt-get. vi worked fine after that. These
are done from the CD.
Next, searched the net for apt sources and found a copy of someone's
sources.lst for etch and copy pasted it. After an apt-get update, it was
time to download other required packages. They are listed below.
knemo - for network monitoring.
adept - A lovely gui for apt. It helps in searching related packages
other than the main namesake.
cupsys, cups-pdf, cupsys-client, cupsys-common, cupsys drivers, printconf.
Icedove - avtar of Thunderbird.
Iceweasel and Icedove use default .mozilla and .mozilla-thunderbird
folders in the user directory, so restoring backups is simply a copy and
paste of the entire folders.
Cups-pdf is a utility to add a system wide pdf printer. The HP Deskjet
610c printer was setup using a browser and entering localhost:631 as the
url. The pdf printer was added by selecting 'Virtual Printer PDF' from
the initial list. In the drivers list, select 'Raw Printer' and go
ahead. By default, cups-pdf creates a folder called PDF in the home
directory. It can be changed by editing the file /etc/cups/cups-pdf.conf.
Open Office is available as an older version in apt, so DON'T install
it. Go to
ftp://ftp.mirror.tw/pub/openoffice/stable/2.3.0/OOo_2.3.0_LinuxIntel_install_en-US_deb.tar.gz
and download the file. Then untar it and you will get a DEBS folder full
of .deb packages and a subfolder called Desktop Integration. Get into
the DEBS folder and use 'sudo dpkg -i *.deb' to install all the deb
packages. Then get into the Desktop Integration folder and install the
last package using 'sudo dpkg -i package_name'. This is the smoothest
and sexiest installation of Open Office in Linux.
For running knemo, go to KMenu -> Control Center -> Internet & Network
-> Network Monitor. Check the box that says 'Use knemo to monitor your
interfaces'.
Thats all for now. Things appear to be running smoothly.

Hi my folks,
I am planning to get a *Sony Ericsson Z530* with an *Airtel connection*....just
for the purpose of surfing the net.
Would I be able to configure the above combination with Linux - which distro
would help me do it easily? How do I go about it?
Thanks and regards,

Hi all,
I recently installed Ayttm 0.4.6-34 on Feisty. When i

No button captions, no labels, no text, totally blank;
only the text fields for entering Screen Name and all
are visible but without any labels! Please have a look
at the screenshot here

Any clue why this is happning, what should i do to

Subject: The KDE-SIG needs (your) help
To: fedora-devel-list(a)redhat.com, fedora-desktop-list(a)redhat.com,
fedora-art-list(a)redhat.com, fedora-docs-list(a)redhat.com,
fedora-list(a)redhat.com, fedora-test-list(a)redhat.com
This is a request for participation:
The KDE-SIG [1] is atm lacking active contributors. And we really need some
help in doing our job to provide a good KDE version in Fedora - especially
with the upcoming KDE 4.0 and the inclusion in Fedora 9.
If you don't know how you could help us here is a list (which is also in the
wiki):
* Packagers: There are so many interesting packages that are not yet packaged
for Fedora. Package it to improve the user experience.
* Reviewers: Only a few persons are doing the kde-related reviews. Help us
reviewing so that more packages could be included.
* Testers: If you love KDE use the development version or the updates-testing
repository and report bugs, bugs, bugs, request enhancements or features. We
need your feedback to improve KDE.
* Bugs: Become a BugZapper and help us with kde-related bugs.
* Documentation writers: The documentation (esp. the DesktopUserGuide) is
GNOME-centered. Help us to provide an equivalent for KDE.
* Release Notes: The few people that are working on the new KDE-Spin are quite
busy with development issues. If you want to help us in writing the release
notes for the next version of Fedora we would give you all the info you need.
* Wiki: Maintain http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/KDE and keep it updated with
end user information.
* Artists: To provide a matching theme for nodoka-metacity-theme and provide
an unified desktop experience.
But this is not a complete list. If you're interested in making KDE in Fedora
better, you're more than welcome.
The list of participants in the wiki is atm not a list of active contributors.
When setting up the wiki the only demand was an interest in KDE to be listed
on this page. This list would be changed in the future to be culled down to
the list of active (or reactivated) participants. This has become necessarely
because there are only (less or more) 3 active contributors atm (plus Than
Ngo). But the list indicates that there are enough people helping with KDE.
If you are interested in joining the KDE-SIG please add your name to this
list, answer to this mail, join us in #fedora-kde at freenode or attend the
weekly KDE-SIG-Meetings (every tuesday 17:00 UTC). I will also add a topic to
the agenda of the meeting next week to introduce new contributors. [2]
The attendance at the SIG-Meetings is of course not required. But this way we
would know of each other. And they are also the main place of discussing the
next steps in the development (besides fedora-devel-list).
If you have any further questions please answer to this mail or write me
directly. And be sure: If your are willing to help you're welcome (regardless
of your skills). :)
Sebastian

> http://www.linuxjournal.com/xstatic/community/events is one road to
Linux Industry Events?
It contains IIT Bombay's Techfest as the lone entry from India.
Foss.in is not listed.
>From what I have seen from attending Techfest a couple of years back,
it is not a particularly Linux or free software oriented event. They
did invite Mark Shuttleworth and might use GNU/Linux in their events
(eg., programming contests), but that does NOT make it a "Linux
Industry Event". They do have an event named "Open Software", but the
software is not necessarily "open source".
Wonder what the definition of "Linux Industry Event" might be.

Wanted to know if anyone had any feedback on the above?
Which one would you choose over the other and why?

I hereby announce the second stable release of Opyum, the Fedora
Offline Package Manager, version 0.0.3.
Opyum (pronounced 'opium') provides a set of tools to enable users,
who do not have a good network (eg., Internet) connection at their
ready disposal, to easily install new packages or update existing ones
through the conventional package management system available in
Fedora.

SHA1SUM: c21186d6b1f31ff8e7a4b9b9fa57dba74f12adae
New features:
Installing or updating from Yum-Packs is easier now with the
introduction of system-install-yumpacks. Apart from that, there is a
new repository manager to let users to add, remove, edit, enable and
disable repositories.
Installation instructions:
# yum install opyum
