Dear Mitul,
Thanks for your concern. Yes its unfortunate that the license scheme for
cyber cafe in Mumbai has been a contentious issue. The cost for license is
very high so many can't afford it . so either they will go out of business
or go underground. either way it is the loss of Mumbaikers who depend on
Internet cafes and the enforcement department in tracking down the grey
cyber cafes . It will unintentionally criminalise many.
The way out may be if the cyber cafe operators are exposed alternative
option in software which fits their budget. atleast they will have a choice.
Here FOSS advocates to have a role to make others aware that they do exist.
Internet Cafes can be a big partner do remember 40% of Indian netizens
depend on Cyber cafe . & just less than 5% of Indians are aware of Internet.
cheers & best wishes

freaking out.
Some of the changes you will notice when you join us Freedel this year
are:
Topic and level driven. All talks and workshops will be categorised
into one of the following streams:
- - System administration
- - Collaboration and Communications
- - Scientific and Research Tools
- - Native Language Computing
- - Legal aspects of FLOSS (licensing, DRM, policy, etc.)

Within each stream, all talks and workshops will be categorised by
relevance to Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced users of FLOSS. No
matter what your experience with FLOSS, there will be something of
interest to you.
Variety of talks. Freedel 2007 will have a wide range of items on the
agenda, including seminar-style talks, BoF sessions, in-depth
workshops and panel discussions. Suggestions on items to include in
the agenda are always welcome.
Community driven. We are actively inviting LUGs and other interested

JNU. Who's the Freedel partner going to be in 2007? Well, I can't
tell you just yet, but keep your ears, and eyes and minds open :)
We're discussing partnership with an eminent body, and hope to have

Hello All,
Anurag has compiled the minutes of the meet with
contributions from me.
-------------------------------------------------
*Minutes of March GLUG-Meet @ Netmagic, Goregaon*
The GNU/Linux Users Group of Mumbai held its March
2007 GLUG meet on 18th March 2007 at Netmagic
Solutions, Goregaon. This meet was attended by about
16 people coming from all over the city.
Following talks and discussions were held.
* Xen - A Brief Introducion
Anurag started with a small introduction on Xen
hypervisor and getting started with a debian guest. He
demonstrated how to get a base guest working on an
ubuntu system running on xen enabled kernel.
* NRCFOSS - Activities
Kenneth talked about NRCFOSS and the activities it has
been doing in the field of education
-- Tea, Coffee, Soft drinks and Snacks sessions
followed accompanied with random discussions on random
topics.
* Python - Getting started
Krishnakant took a hands on session on how effective
python can be as a teaching tool for beginner
programmers. He demonstrated how simple and quick
python can be to teach complex concepts like OOP
programming.
And another eventful GLUG meet came to an end. Many
thanks to Dhawal and Netmagic solutions for arranging
everything.

Hi,
I have been asked many times about KDE 4.0 release date and
such. Often, I didnot have the *exact* and *correct* reply. 4MLOC to
port and maintain can't be joke and I didn't want to give any false
positives to anybody. I am sure some of you have faced this problem
as well.
Anyways, incase you are not a regular on the dot, this is
for you [1]. KDE 4.0 release schedule was published a while back.

Cheers!

While agreeing that the benifits of Free Software cannot be fully exploited
unless unrestricted sharing of code takes place, it is not a cakewalk
as my friend imagines.
It's a result of real dedicated work at the grassroots.
People relaxing on top of utopian clouds may find it difficult to
imbibe the intricateimplementaion strategies.
The migration can take place only by gradually building up confidence.
We can't expect the govts to blindly endorse Free Software by being
seduced by its
philosophy alone. We have to show them that it is indeed a working model.
The book about which we are discussing here clearly states that it is
a compilation of 'FOSS based'
projects in the PSEs of Kerala. Please understand that we are talking
about 'FOSS based' projects and
nothing else. So we now have some solid working models to substantiate
our campaigning.
Now don't think that we are absolutely complacent about all that we have done.
We are very much interested in taking this to the next level and this issue is
addressed in the draft of the current IT policy.
<quote>
8.4 The Government is of the view that knowledge generated through
public funding should be freely available to the public. Facilities
will be developed to ensure the same.
</quote>
Once this draft is finalised, all the issues that my friend is being worried
about can be put to rest.
>So when we talk of spreading FOSS, are we talking of spreading the
usage of the foss tools and platform or are we >talking of spreading
the culture of sharing of code?
It should be a mix of both
>In my opinion, the tools and platform
>are irrelevant - the criterion is: is the code shared or not. If so,
>it is foss, if not it is proprietary. Which means i would prefer a
>government that commissions code in VB and shares it to a government
that does it in python and doesnt share it.
Abolutely misguided opinion.
>The companies that bid for these contracts oppose the sharing for the
>simple reason that they follow the proprietary profit model of write
>once, sell many times and feel sharing will eat into their profits.
Please understand that paying once for a custom made software(of which
they will
have absolute control) is far better than giving huge amounts as
license fees to
propreitary companies.

Please note that a 'user' need not be an indivudual.
