M$ reactions to the ODF standard is a very very nice pointer to the real problem - M$ continued quest to perpetuate an illegal monopoly by foul means, without the slightest technical merit. Solution - break the monopoly by forcing open all existing and future M$ protocols. Fine them in hard cash (not stupid vouchers) for every violation of incomplete protocol definitions. Force governments to use only open standards No software patents. These are very simple. But M$ and their microserfs specialise in dishing out crap like multiple standards are good for competition, end users will suffer, our ip will be compromised and other rubbish, to the mainstream media. The reporters who print this crap have absolutely no understanding of these issues and make no attempt to undersatnd them either. And in my opinion much of the media are biased because lack of tech knowledge AND M$ ad money. I am yet not even talking of M$ sponsored "case studies" and reports. -- Rgds JTD

If M$ Office and XP crash 10 times a day, most offices will shut down. There will be chaos. Lets not get biased so much that we exaggerate. If it's a bug say it's a bug and file a report, rather than make comments that are opposite to our daily experience. I have often asked about some problem or the other about various packages and ALWAYS it's the developer (amongst others) who have responded, usually within a few hrs. and Never later than 24 hrs. If u are setting up the phone, that is precisely what you sorely miss. If i were selling 50 phones to a courier company, imagine what a pain in the ass it would be to click innumerable buttons to setup the phone book which would be 90% common to all. (RB) GUI is just an extension of a script. The script you mentioned can be run by simply clicking a gui shortcut to it. It is all about environment. If you have to work in a terminal only environment, naturally command line and scripts is the way. If you are in a gui environment, and if the gui is created well, it would do the same functions as script.What is important is to understand the concept of the job in hand, not expertise in a particular interface. For example in the ADSL and wireless routers there is a tiny linux system running and it can be configured using scripts. However if that was the only way, how many service engineers would be able to use the command line interface? Instead, there is a gui firmware interface which only the service personnel would understand and they correctly enter the values according to the customer's environment and the gui internally creates relevant scripts and runs them. That is technology. You can't fight it simply because it makes things easy for others. There are people who are at ease with a screen full of text but there are others who feel intimidated by it and require some graphical interface to interact. Just dont pretend that your subjective preferences are god's ordained rules and hence some piece of code is not ready for this or that. Software Freedom day event was a grand success

It is the time to look at our history. SMC is reactivated from a dead state, as a result of personal discussions with praveen, hiran & vimaljoseph in the sidelines of GPLv3 Conference in bangalore. The new team is setup at last year SFD celebrations in Thrissur. Suresh, Baiju(the founder of SMC), Hussain KH (rachana), Anwar, Students in GEC etc also joined in the team at that time. Now we have more than 30 developers+localizers. The astounding progress within the short span of time is described below * December 2006: Debian Installer is Fully Translated into Malayalam ( The Work of Debian malayalam, a sub team of Swathanthra malayalam computing) * January 2007: Santhosh Thottingal of SMC done a complete architectural rewrite of Dhvani, the Indian language text to speech system by Ramesh hariharan & added Malayalam support to It. * March 2007 : participated & Conducted workshops in FOSS Meet@NITC, Kozhikkode * March 2007: Swathanthra Malayalam Computing selected as a participating Organisation ( and only Indian Organisation) in Google Summer of Code Project. 5 projects were allotted. * April 2007: GNU aspell supported Malayalam (major issues are resolved) * May 2007: Swanalekha: a Phonetic Input scheme for malayalam using SCIM * June 2007: Lalitha, Bolnagiri based xkb keyboard for malayalam by Jinesh * July 2007: Added pango support to Tuxtype by Mobin M as part of GSoC work. Now Tuxtype is usable for all Indian languages * July 2007:Debian package (Debconf )Translations. Malayalam is the Most translated indian language with 27% translation of configuration strings * August 2007: Malayalam Matrix screen saver Release, & First Public Release of Aspell- malayalam spellchecker with More than 137000 words list (It is the largest Indian Language Aspell wordlist. Second is hindi with 25000 words). * September 2007: Gnome Officially supports malayalam in Gnome 2.20 with More than 80% translations * September 2007: Sarika : The first Free Indian language speech recognition engine is developed by Shyam K (as a part of GsoC). It Currently identifies more than 50 malayalam words * September 2007: Tuxtype malayalam is Released by Mobin.M & friends (Vimal, Shreyas, Sreeranj, Prince) * Meera , a Malayalam Traditional opentype font with more than 900 glyphs is released under GNU GPL by Hussain K.H and Suresh P . It is developed for Suruma renderering scheme (not compatible with Uniscribe scheme for windows) . Hmm.. why do you think M$ is singled out? We have companies like IBM, sun microsystems etc. respected by FOSS community. Those companies are also doing business, writing software. So why not throw the question to M$, why they are not ready to accept others ? BTW, cross posting and having discussion across multiple lists is a very bad idea. regards VK

Open Office Solution Required

Hello All, An OO user in Windows is facing some problems with Spreadsheet. He uses the .xls format. Problem 1: His file consists of many rows and columns. Cells in each row are related to each other. Now in Excel he can sort columns individually and during each sorting, entire rows get sorted. So after every sort, the cells in each row are the same. It is the entire row that gets sorted. In OO he can sort columns but it sorts cells in that column only and this breaks the row and ultimately the table cells get cross connected. Problem 2: In Excel, he can secure a file but allow partial changes like changing the cell background colour. This is needed as his job status indicator is colour coded as the job progresses. His employees can only change colours as they progress with the job. In OO he can secure a file but it is like ON/OFF. Once secure, no partial changes are allowed.
