Dear Linuxers,
When you get the time, please watch Linus' talk on Git at
Google[1]. It helps if you have an idea of what Git is and why it's
different from the other source (version) control systems around,
though not necessary. This is a very informative discussion. It's
about 70 minutes in duration.
HTH.

Hello All,
Further to the earlier writeup about the Debian Etch KDE installation.
This writeup refers to installation of multimedia support for Debian
Etch KDE. The links were found from this site given below.
http://www.ehomeupgrade.com/entry/2812/how-to_setup_debian
However it has a lot more stuff that may not be necessary so simply
follow the following steps.
Add the Debian multimedia repo to your /etc/apt/sources.list as given below.
#multimedia
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org etch main
Then run the following 2 commands one after another.
gpg --keyserver hkp://wwwkeys.eu.pgp.net --recv-keys 1F41B907
gpg --armor --export 1F41B907 | sudo apt-key add -
Then do a sudo apt-get update.
After that install the packages using this command.
sudo apt-get install w32codecs libdvdcss2 liblame0 flashplugin-nonfree
streamtuner xmms msttcorefonts banshee realplayer
This is a long installation. Note that from the site, the totem-mozilla
entry was removed as we don't use Gnome.
Then install kaffeine using sudo apt-get install kaffeine. If apt
returns errors then follow its instructions to run sudo apt-get -f
install to correct broken package lists. Then run the kaffeine
installation again.
Once Kaffeine is installed, you system is now ready for multimedia
playback. You can now play VCDS, DVDs and other media formats to your
hearts content. Kaffeine will automatically detect a VCD or DVD and
offer to play it.
There is no volume control in the desktop so right click on the task bar
and select 'Add applet to panel...'. From the list select 'Sound mixer'.
After it is installed, right click on its icon and select 'Channels'.
Remove the unwanted ones to keep the icon slim. The necessary ones are
'Headphone' and 'PCM' as they actively control your sound level.
Now your system is ready as a desktop pc. Those new to Debian can simply
follow the 2 writeups and get Debian Etch running in their systems with
practically no problems.

Hi,
I have recently bought the acer 4710z laptop, with linpus linux
installed. I formatted and installed Fedora 7 on it. The webcam (acer
Crystal eye) was not detected thus i tried the script given on
forums.....http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=169878
After this i started experiencing problems with yum and though webcam
was detected, was not compatible with video drivers.
The GUI of software updater also hangs most of the time.
Internet connection on my laptop is taken from my windows xp desktop.
and i am a newbie with linux.
Please guide to restore yum and also regarding the webcam.
thank you.

I just started working on bind-dlz , but as per the documentation on
the website i need to use the dlz patch with bind 9.2.2 .The thing is
i am not able to find this package.
As per the README.txt file it quotes the following
"First, get Bind version 9.2.2 release from www.isc.org. Newer versions
of Bind may be available, but this patch was built to go against the 9.2.2
release. Future versions of this package may be built to go against later
versions of Bind. Unzip and untar that on your machine. Once that is
finished, make sure your Bind source directory is called "bind-9.2.2".
So if any one has work with with this patch on the latest version of
bind please let me know .
website for reference :http://bind-dlz.sourceforge.net/
Thanks : -)

Hello ,
Myself Aman Mathur , from Mumbai . I am a student currently doing my MCA and have recently joined the Linuxers mailing list . Im a GNU/Linux enthusiast and love the freedom that free software offers.
I am really interested in doing my final year project on the GNU/Linux platform instead of a proprietary platform so i was wondering as to how i can go about doing a project on GNU/Linux.
The project has to be of minimum 6 months duration so are there any companies, in Mumbai or elsewhere, offering projects to final year MCA students on the GNU/Linux platform ?
Any advice/tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot :)

We are in process to execute the event the moment we get an entry in DB i.e.
at the time of insertion in MYSQL we need to generate an XML and forward to
another server.
For example we got an message from user A, we need to fetch all who are
linked up with user A and finally put in encoded XML file. At last this XML
file has sent to third party server i.e.
http://yahoo.com?data=<encoded-xml-string>&action=data<http://yahoo.com/?data=<encoded-xml-string>&action=data>
Please let us update if there is any alternate to do rather than MYSQL JOB

Thanks
We are facing a peculiar problem. I'm providing as much details
as I can. Even so, tell me if I should provide more info.
LAMP server before install - RHEL 3 with Apache 2, PHP 4, MySQL 4.
After install - RHEL 5, Apache 2.2.3, PHP 5.1.6, MySQL 5.0.2
The problem we are facing is the site performing badly when
accessed from certain locations - from our corporate LAN,
which is behind Squid. Certain colleagues in other companies (we
suspect behind they are also behind Squid or some proxy) also
reported with gemeric messages like "site isn't loading".
Some symptoms are:
1. Images, CSS, JS files not loading or loading incompletely.
2. If we view source, we see the HTML is fully downloaded, but not rendered.
2. PHP pages being asked to be saved (the saved pages are blank)
This problem is prominently noticeable in PHPMyAdmin.
3. The performance improves 9may be illusion) over time, but any new
drastic changes brings it to square one.
4. Awstats page takes forever to load comletely.
5. Sometimes the sites are inaccessible in toto.
6. Files not downloading through FTP (even 200K fails).
The perplexing thing is I and my colleague have accessed the server
from home (Triband and cable net respectively) and everything works!
We don't know what the problem is, where it is, etc.
Any ideas?
