Resizing NTFS with GParted

Hi. I have a 100 gig drive on my notebook. 85 gigs is ntfs, remaining space is used by the recovery partition (fat). I need to resize the ntfs partition to about 40 gigs and install linux on the remaining 40. I burned a live cd of gparted and booted from it, but it shows an exclamataion mark next to the ntfs partition. "Cannot read contents of this filesystem. Only limited functions available." I cannot shrink it any further than 8 MB. Gparted allows me to shrink the recovery partition (fat) without issues. Any ideas? Any alternatives to gparted with better ntfs support? Regards, NMK.

initialising a file at bootup

hello, there is a file in /proc which i want to initialise to a particular value at bootup (i have root access to the concerned system); googling suggests that i should do it using a startup script. is the script being referred to "/etc/inittab"? is there any other script file which i can use for this purpose? if there is, then what might be the pros and cons of using that script file over inittab? -- warm regards, Pradnyesh Sawant -- More important than what i am, is what i want to be! --Dumbledore to Harry in HP2

Suitable distro for an old computer?

Hi, My neighbour is sick of his Windows 98 and now wants Linux on his desktop machine too, after using Kubuntu on his laptop. His is an old P3 566MHz computer with 96MB RAM. He needs to play videos, mplayer will do. For music, I need suggestions for a lightweight mp3 player. He needs something WinAmp-ish. Amarok, he loves, but its too heavy. I hate xmms and I heard bmp is not being developed these days.. I'm thinking about trying out XFCE and if it seems heavy, Fluxbox will be the default. Now the question about the distro arises, because I need all the above mentioned packages in the repository of that particular distro. Also, the packages need to be compiled for i686 rather than pentium4, like Fedora is these days, if i'm not mistaken.. Should I try out Xubuntu? [OT] Local cddb service

Hi, Can I have a local CDDB server without installing the about 3GB database of free cddb data? I want a local server to serve only my group of computers, and have the data for my collection of CDs. I have nothing against freecddb, but have problem accessing it through institute proxy from some applications. A how-to or a pointer will be very helpful. Thanks and regards. N. NTFS read/write support in Linux

http://lunapark6.com/?p=1710 NTFS-3G is a driver which provides read/write support for NTFS in 32-bit Linux systems. It has FUSE as a dependency. porting of ie specific code to firefox

Hello Guys/Gals, One of me colleagues at work just called to check if i had a solution on an IE to firefox porting issue. Glad to know that commercial applns are now being forced the firefox way..:D. Will mention the challenge in brief : > 35000 html pages > javascript written for IE > DOM based on IE What would be the best way for me to port this IE based application to firefox such that we can use it from Linux as well as MS???. Are there any automated tools/parsers that i can make use of??. Secondly, the other through process i had in mind was...if the first part isnt feasible can we build plugin the IE javas script and DOM model support into firefox as a plugin. This sounds ambitious but am just trying to explore some options out here where none seem to exist. Thanks in advance guys.
