Hi all, what is the state of gprs /edge performance. a few months ago i tried out airtel gprs and it was pathetic to say the least. The CDMA usb modem from tata is about tolerable Basically Schuyler Erle one of the freemap faculty would like to obtain a connection when he is India. Rgds JTD

Invitation to FOSS Meet@NITC 2008

Linuxers, We are pleased to inform you that National Institute of Technology, Calicut will be hosting its annual free and open source software conference, namely FOSS Meet @ NITC 2008, on 28th, 29th and 30th of March 2008. This time the focus of the event is to get more students actively involved in FOSS. As usual, there will be talks, BOFs, workshops etc. - details of which will soon be put up on our website – http://www.fossmeet.in/nitc . In addition to that, this year, we are starting a contest called FOSSDev, to promote student participation in and contribution to FOSS. Basically, a team wishing to participate has to find a mentor who will help them contribute to a project of the participant's choice. FOSSDev is a year long event. There will be three "checkpoints" at which progress will be evaluated and prizes will be given accordingly. Total prize money is Rs. 23,500. This meet is organized by the GNU/Linux Users Group Calicut(GLUGC) in association with Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Student Branch NIT Calicut [IEEE], Computer Society of India, Calicut Chapter [CSI], Computer Science and Engineering Association [CSEA] and all the volunteers from various walks of life. Hello Folks, As a new member to your mailing list, i hereby state, that i am a novice at using linux. But i am well aware of the power it bestows upon us. :)) Anyway, i am an _Animator_ and would like to know, which would be the best Distro for running Autodesk Maya ? I stay in Vashi Sector 10. and would be greatly obliged if any of the senior members would have an extra copy of a suitable distro for me. More information is available at: https://www.linux-foundation.org/en/Downloads This release of the LSB has many fixes and features, including: * New "trial use" modules, replacing the former "optional" modules. * Initial support for printing. * Initial support (as trial use) for ALSA. * Support for Perl and Python as first-class languages for Linux apps. * Several freedesktop.org standards, including menus and icon themes. * Support for the Portland project's xdg-utils as trial use. * Promotion of Qt 4 to a required part of the standard, and deprecation of Qt 3. * FreeType support, through both FreeType and the Xft X extension. * XRender support.
