Thanks for the reply, Philip. I am newbie at linux.I did go thru the diald Howto... I just wanted to clear one small glitch. When my eth crd is not detected, the system will give me an output "connect : Network is unreachble" on trying to ping.(ping,say VSNL) In cse I want to divert this commnd to an evaluation n it's value to variable in a script,I will need to 'grep' the output of ping. This I have tried already(grep o/p of ping when the network card is down) The o/p of ping is not fed to grep for comparing patterns, rather, the script just puts up the message of 'Network is unreachable' on the monitor,and goes ahead executing the script. I would like to know,is there any specific way I can catch this output and then grep it to evaluate and set the condition right for the script to detect the eth card is not being detected and perform the necessry software resolving. I am designing web based surveillance system. It is basically embedded linux based system... I need 10 frames/sec speed.. Resolution can be 800x600, but even less resolution is also ok for me... I want to use low cost one... and its driver size should be very less ... Can anyone tell me what r the cameras available in local market and what r the drivers needed for it.... if camera with parallel port is available, then i will be more happy it is urgent..... thanks __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Hi, I am running Redhat as a proxy using Squid.The connection through internet is through cable internet. When the cable internet goes down, the modem automatically dials up to the ISP. I want the modem to dial up to the ISP only when the script detects any requests to be sent out to the internet. All, I don't know is, how to go about this. Guys.....ne ideas on how I could implement this? All idea's are welcome. Thanks. problem with shared libraries

i've done a fresh install of RedHat GNU/linux 7.3 (gcc-2.96-110, gcc-c++-2.96-110) on my m/c. i then installed the rar utility. but when i try to run it, it gives the following error: "error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory" i then did a "locate libstdc++.so", only to find libstdc++.so.2* in the /usr/lib directory. then i installed "wine" from the source code, that i'd obtained from a linuxforu cd. when i tried to run a windoze .exe file using it, it gave me the foll error: "error while loading shared libraries: libntdll.dll.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory" i'd installed gcc-3.2.1 previously (i did a fresh install to get rid of it, since there wasn't a "make uninstall" option available with the source code. i'd then installed blacksun java (j2sdk1.4.1). but when i tried to write a java program, and compile it using "javac", i got the error: "error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory") is there some specific way in which i need to install gcc again, or do i have to make some changes to my path? if i search for libstdc++.so.5 on the Internet, then do i copy it to /usr/lib, or somewhere else? what changes do i make to system variables? thanks for all the help. -- HACKER: Someone who loves to program and loves being clever about it. --- Pradnyesh Sawant (The Doubtfire) B.E. Hello All, Looking for resources on working on a very small footprint GNU/Linux for project we plan to start in the Affordable Solutions Lab. The idea is to put enough stuff on 32MB Flash RAM, in a thin machine that can run Mozilla and some apps, probably based on it using XUL. We looked at uclinux, but that's not what we are looking for ... The project aims to squeeze a normal network enabled kernel, with display, VMM etc into as small a size as possible. Any pointers? when i checked my ipchains and iptables..it gave following output ================================================================ [root@localhost net]# ipchains -L ipchains: Incompatible with this kernel [root@localhost net]# iptables -L Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT) target prot opt source destination Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT) target prot opt source destination Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT) target prot opt source destination ================================================================= why is it saying ipchains incompatible with this kernel?

IPTables kazaa v2 blocking

hi, I had posted a query a very long time a go about blocking/stopping Kazaa ver 2 Clients on my internal network from reaching the outside world. Did not get many responses for ver 2 blocking, ver 1 was port 1214 . Asking the question again. How to block Kazaa Ver 2+ clients from connecting and or transferring files via a Linux box, running IPTables/Kernel 2.4.19+. thanks Ripunjay Bararia
