Hello, I have a large text file where 2 lines (fields) form a record. Now I want to merge the 2 lines into one line seperated by a comma. Line1 Line2 The fields should be seperated by a comma. Line1,Line2 How can I define a keystroke that will, add a comma at the end of Line1 perform a JOIN of Line1 and Line2 move the cursor to the next record? Any help appreciated. I have successfully changed over to redhat 8.0 but there is now webmin I downloaded the latest rpm from sourceforge but it does not respond on port 10000 why? I need to setup php & and apache virtual host How do I do it? mount options for reiserfs

Hi, I am trying to do a Debian chroot install using my current system, onto a fresh hard disk. I formatted all the partitions to use reiserfs, purely for experimental purposes. In my existing system, I have a partition that gets mounted as /home/sameerds/data, with the user sameerds.users as the owner of the mount point and everything inside the mounted partition. This is standard stuff in ext3 using the uid and gid options. But I can't find anything equivalent in reiserfs ... Second, here's some interesting behaviour, but I don't know how that is achieved. Just after mounting /mnt/debinst/usr, here's the "ls -l" listing for usr/local drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 48 Aug 11 11:58 local And just after mounting /mnt/debinst/usr/local drwxrwsr-x 11 root staff 240 Aug 11 13:03 local How did this happen? I need similar settings with root.src as the owner for /mnt/debinst/usr/src, since that's the standard policy for Debian systems. Since that isn't happening automatically, I assume the behaviour for usr/local is not Debian-specific. Any pointers? Hi Ashwin when you say you cannot receive email, do you mean from your service provider or for your domain if it is from your service provider you should have .fetchmailrc file in your home directory which configuration is as follows poll mail.vsnl.net.in with proto POP3 interval 6 user "xxxxxx" there with password "xxxxxxxxxxxxx" ... interval 6 is 6 * 300 seconds for this account. and if is for your domain then you should have a public ip and your domain registered also the local-host-names and /etc/mail/virtusertable have to reflect your domain for eg ashley.com check your settings in /etc/mail/sendmail.m4 or check out www.sendmail.org for more information Thanks & Regards Ashley Avileli IT Support Emirates Golf Club / Dubai Creek Golf Club Dubai - UAE

Hi kamlesh, very good option.. PHP comes with inbuilt support to MySQL. For apche you need to configure it separately for PHP. Configuring sendmail for LAN emailing

Hi, I am stuck up with the sendmail. I am able to send mail from my LAN desktops using the default configuration of sendmail. But I am not able to configure the sendmail to receive mails either from the outside world or within my LAN desktops. I am running sendmail on RH8.0. Dear All, I am a computer engineer working as network consultant based in Mumbai. Recently, my school administrators, have asked me to propose a solution for automating the entire "student progress report" creation & maintenance setup. I could have gone with "Win2K-SQL 2K-VB" plateform, But I also want to explore the possibility in Linux based solution as essentially it will be free for school. I am looking at LAMP architecture... Neighbour Table Overflow error

Dear luggies , I am bombard with one error "Neighbour table overflow " It happens when i am connecting my local network to internet via a rh linux 6.2 box [gateway server] It connect to net and then slowly degrades the performance and finally the ping responce also dies out it start with 30ms and to till 12,000 ms and stop . then i do "service network restart" so start it again and gain the problem repeats It was working fine till monday and then suddny bommed . I have change network card as per my ISP[in2cable] suggestion . still problem persists . I have googlized but could not understand the ARP Cache thing . Is there any solution to this problem , how do i get rid of these message . With Windows 98 installed. the partition table looks different at least in my PC. Because windoze 98 does not allow more than one primary partition. The Linux partitions should have started from hda5 and onwards, unless you create a boot partition which is usually hda2. if you could give the exact error Lilo gives, it would be more helpful. And one more thing, in older systems, such as P2, Lilo requires the start of the boot partition (in your case the root partition) to be within 1024 cylinders. This feature is mother board dependant, raher BIOS dependant. Email server on Linux

Hello, I am trying to setup a LAN server and have installed a server version of RH8.0. Using the default version of the sendmail.cf file. I am able to send the mails from my local domain to the outside world (e.g. yahoo.com,rediffmail.com...etc.). Now I want to exchange mails among this server and the other machines on the LAN. I have gone through a tutorial aritcle at www.linuxjournal.com on sendmail: Introduction and Configuration. I tried to check the dns issues by using the command >> nslookup -sil 192.168.1.42 >> Server : 202.56.... >> Address: 202.56.... ** server can't find ......:NXDOMAIN Then I checked the ports by using the commands >> netstat -nl The tcp port 25 was LISTENING 127.0.0.1. I changed this to my ip address of the server 192.168.1.42. by changing the following line in the sendmail.cf file >> # SMTP daemon options >> 0 DaemonPortOptions=Port=smtp,Addr=127.0.0.1, Name=MTA, changed to >> 0 DaemonPortOptions=Port=smtp,Addr=192.168.1.42, Name=MTA, After doing this I restarted the sendmail daemon using the rc script /etc/init.d/sendmail. Then I tried to send mail to the local host as well as to the outside world. But it saying for localhost >> root....Connecting to localhost.localdomain. via relay... >> root....Deferred: Connection refused by localhost.localdomain. and for outside world >> ash_..@yahoo.com....Connecting to localhost.localdomain. via relay.. >> ash_..@yahoo.com....Deferred: Connection refused by localhost.localdomain. Now, when I keep the tcp port open for 127.0.0.1 then it works fine for sending mails to the localhost as well as the internet. But when I change it the IP address 192.168.1.42 then it gives the above "Deferred" message which i feel is abnormal delivery. I beg your help in this regard. UDMA 3/4/5 Enabling

Hi all, Sorry for posting a hardware related issue. Any help would be higly appreciated I have RH 9 installed on my machine.. Currently my PC has PIO 4 and Ultra DMA 2 enabled I want to enable Ultra DMA 3 or 4 or 5 When i try to update my BIOS to change the Ultra DMA Setting, it says "Ultra DMA 3/4 will only work when there is a 80 pin shielded cable" 1) I just wanted to know do we get 80 pin shielded cable in Mumbai (Lamington road)?? 2) How can I identify a "80 pin shielded cable" ? i.e. will it be round or flat like any FRC??? 3) If at all I get a 80 pin Shielded cable what length should i buy? What would you do with this? (originally at http://www.df-21.net/ubb/Forum1/HTML/002527.html ) MW: Symantec, as well as several other anti-virus manufacturers, also have free online full spectrum virus scanners, that can find any virii and not just an individual virus. What is more important, however, is to always check out your email on the server instead of on your local computer - and delete any suspicious emails before you even download them! Personally, I use SimpleCheck for that, though I'm sure there are other programs that can do the same thing. By doing so, you A) lower your bandwith usage (and thus with some ISPs your Internet cost), B) make sure you can never get infected by email, and C) will never have to read a single spam message again. Me: [B]What is more important, however, is to always check out your email on the server instead of on your local computer - and Not necessarily. Not if you have a sane email client. Since I use Linux, I'm pretty much immune to these worms. MW: Well, most people aren't masochist, so they don't use Linux. For people using real OSes, deleting unwanted email on the server is still the best option. And even if you are using a fake OS like Linux, manually deleting spam is still a more efficient method than trusting the email client to do so automatically. Me: Please define real OS. MW: An OS natively based around the Win32 or Win64 API. Me: That's not a real definition. MW: Of course it is. It might just be a definition you don't like. Hi Rahul, According to my knowledge you have to installed linux on master hdd only bcoz linux recognised only master hdd. If u r installing linuz on 2nd hdd then make it as master & make 1st hdd as slave if the 1st hdd is not having linux installed. Configuration problem in Sendmail

Hello, I am new user of the Sendmail on RH 8.0. I am trying to configure the Sendmail on my Linux Laptop to send mails over LAN using SMTP and use the LAN server to route mails and receive mails over the internet. I have read the instructions in the Linux System Administrator's guide and did some changes in the sendmail.mc file and then using the m4 macro processor created a new sendmail.cf file. After this I tried to send mail to myself, that is to root, I checked response by looking at the -v options response. It always says thta connecting to the LAN server (mladelhi.mine) root... Connecting to mladelhi.mine.nu. via relay... root... Deferred: Connection refused by mladelhi.mine.nu. I am not getting the normal message of message delivered. What should be the change in configuration for atleast make it work for local delivery atleast? Please help me in this regards, -- ASHWIN S. strange problem with mounting /dev/hda1

Hi, I have a dual boot machine running windows and RH Linux 7.3 I decided to get rid of windows and convert the partition to a native Linux partitio. Here's what I did: 1. Used fdisk to delete the windows partition which occupied cylinders 1 - 1727 2. Created a new primary partition in it's place 3. Used mke2fs -j /dev/hda1 to create an ext3 file system on /dev/hda1 Now after mounting /dev/hda1 , when I do 'df' it shows me /dev/hda1 is 100% used. When I go to the directory where it is mounted and do an 'ls -al', it does not show me any file. I am not sure what exactly is happening here. Also /dev/hda is being mounted as a 'read-only' file system, even when I specifically type mount -o rw /dev/hda1 /mnt/olddos Why is it being mounted as read-only, and how can I mount it as writeable? New to GNU-Linux here using Mandrake 9.1. Got a few questions. 1. Is there any utility which can get the power saving features running on a Linux machine? This is not just about putting the display on standby mode, but also possibly powering down the hard disks. 2. Any daemon to monitor the temperature of the CPU & possibly also CPU fan's rpm.? Am using an Athlon XP 2000+ 3. Anyway to make an iso image from a CD ? mkisofs looks like it can, but I cant really figure out what switches I could use. Diald reroute operation does not add default gateway

I have Redhat 8.0 installed on my home system. I am trying to configure Diald to connect to the internet. While I went throu the diald.conf file I fould this command. >reroute Above the command,was a declaration saying some old kernels do not follow the reroute command. Moreover I am using wvdial as the chat connection script for connecting to the internet. thus declaring >connect /usr/bin/wvdial Now the problem is, as diald starts it creates a SLIP interface which is also set as the default interface till the system is connected to the internet, and is replaces by the network gateway when connected. Unfortunately, when connected the sl0/1/2 slip device always remains the default gateway. I tried to 'route add default gw' as the vsnl dns server, but this only disconnects the system. Is there something I am missing here? I am also attaching the diald.conf file See below. Thanx. Connection to MTNL

i am able to connect to VSNL but unable to do so to MTNL. Is there some kind of special authentication needed with MTNL or any reply that it accepts after Logging in. My login completes succesfuly but after that something goes wrong. I CAN CONNECT TO MTNL USING StartMenu(RedHat)->System Settintgs->Network->Mtnl->Activate. Hi I am using a tar command to take my 5 gb data backup on Hp dat drive. I am using tar -zcvf /dev/st0 directories to take backup For restoring tar -zxvf /dev/st0 directories to take retore it It is taking lot of time to restore the files .I think when i am tring to restore any file it serially reads all files prior to files i want to take backup so it is taking time to restore it. Hi, I am using Grub Bootloader. My linux partition is visible in windows as D (hda6). It can't read the filesystem but asks to format it time and again. I'm afraid that one of my family members might say yes to it and ruin everything for me. I tried the 'hide (hd0,5)' option in the grub console, but even that doesn't work. I tried searching around in google for it. Couldn't find anything useful. Please help. I have a windows partition as hda5. But in windows it shows an unrecognized device as D and the windows partition as E. Siddhesh

Knoppix V/s RedHat Booting problem.

Hello Friends, I am new to the group and xcited about it. I am a newbie to Linux using it since last Five Months. I have problem at hand. I have installed Knoppix 3.2 and RH 9.0 on a single HDD. Knoppix uses LILO and RH uses GRUB by default as the bootloader. I installed Knoppix first on /dev/hda1 with LILO in the MBR. After that while installing RH on /dev/hda3 the Knoppix OS was not detected as the second OS. So I added a Entry called Knoppix and partition as /dev/hda1. But when the system boots it does show the Knoppix entry but does not boot from it. I booted from a Knoppix bootable and did LILO Config. But due to that the GRUB was wiped out. I want to know how I can install GRUB with Knoppix as a OS option on the same drive. Or I will have to boot Knoppix from a bootable floppy everytime. Can anyone help? proxy & firewall

1. i wanted to know names of some good free proxy servers and also how to configure Mozilla for the same. 2. how to know that all my data is going through the proxy. can any tool like 'tcpdump' help ? 2. also how to get the Internet Firewall working( i am using RH 8.0 ). 3. how to know whether the firewall is working or not. any tools ? 4. One last question, i know i shouldnt be asking on this list, but then i am sure many people on this list use windows. i got infected by 'msblast.exe' and my Windows Management Instrumentation(WMI) seems to be screwed up, for which i cannot activate internet firewall( so i cant download DCOM patch from microsoft site ) nor can i do a system restore. my windows partition(Windows XP Professional) is disconnected from the internet and i have removed all traces of msblast.exe( ie /windows/system32 and registry ) but WMI just doesnt seem to work. Wireless Key Board issues

Hi all, Yesterday I was trying to Install PCQLINUX 8.0 on my PC. Configuration AMD Athlon, ASUS Mother Board 512 Mb ram 80gb HDD Neotech Wireless keyboard with Built in Mouse.(This keybord comes with a InfraRed receiver that has two PS2 plugs coming out one for mouse and one for key board) I have Windows XP in the First 5GB of my HDD. When i start the install process, Its asks for installation mode I type in LINUX TEXT My CPU, HDD, CD , FLOPPY are all detected a) If both my Keyboard plug and Mouse plug are connected, None are detected and I'm not able to type os move my trackball No response is received by the system. b) If I disconnect my Mouse Plug, My key board workks fine, and I'm able to do my installation in text mode, In XConfig, Since I have not connected any mouse the setup fails. (Its keyboard and mouse are properly running for Windows XP, My Keyboard sticker says that it supports WIN 9x and NT, may be they mean the extra multimedia keys) Also I need help on setting up my Linux properly. This is what i want to do First 5 GB win XP Next 100MB /boot Next 500MB swap Next 10000 / Next 5000 /g Next 5000 /h Remaining Windows Partitions While creating all the partition i Specify size in MBs and not in cylinders Is that Ok? Qmail forwarding some email

Hi, I have never done this before with Qmail. There is some email that I receive which I would like to be forwarded to a different email address. How can this be done in Qmail? If this cannot be done, I can use procmail to copy to the other address. However I would like to use Qmail to do it. Any information and pointers appreciated. Sound card driver problems in Linux Mandrake

Hi, I have recently installed the open source distro of Linux Mandrake on my IBM Thinkpad 770Z Laptop on a journalised ext3 partition together with win XP on an NTFS partition. My soundcard is a crystal Semiconductors cirrus logic card whose specs are given below: Cirrus CS4610/1 CrystalClear SoundFusion Audio The mandrake conf tool says that the required driver is labelled cs46xx, and that it has been moduled in the kernel, but I am getting no sounds at all. The hardware is fine, because I get sound when I boot to XP. The dmesg output says that my drivers are not moduled in the kernel. Therefore, I did make xconfig and looked it up. I moduled the relevant drivers and did make dep, make modules, make modules_install etc and created new boot images and recompiled. The recompiled kernel clobbered my linux as I could not access any services at all, let alone sound. I restored the earlier images and kernel files from backups and was able to restore my system to it's original configuration, but still not getting any sound. Since I am new to Linux, I do not know details about linux kernels and how to compile them properly, despite my following the LINUX KERNEL HOWTO doc to the hilt. I am in dire need of assistance from a more knowledgeable linux user/administrator who can instruct me on what to do. Thanks, AR

Help 4 Mandrake 7.0 Installation

Dear Linuxers, I wish to install Mandrake Linux 7.0 I have partitioned drives C and D on which I have WIN ME. I tried 2 install Lnx4win on drive D but the msg say that since WIN ME does NOT hve REAL MS DOS, the installation CANNOT proceed. For that, I need Win98 for Lnx4win to be installed. The other option is to install it directly by rebooting. Since I dont knw much about partitions etc. I cannot proceed because I get stuck at the installation dialog box that aks me to choose the drive where I wanna install Linux. However, it also warns that UNLESS I'm comfy with Partitions etc I should not fiddle around because all data might be erased. And the confusion about Mount point, Resize precludes me from going ahead with the installation. I wish to retain WIN ME and other important data on drive C and yet have Mandrake on D. Thanx Mangesh The same problem came up when I initially installed Gnu/Linux. Subsequently I just re-installed Redhat 8.0, and the problem disappeared. But now I will download the the latest i810 drivers for X and do things correctly. Vidhata. The problem is with the i810 drivers if u have these boards. Now the way to get out of it is only to upgrade the X-server's driver. Download the letest XFree86(i810) driver and compile them. This may solve your problem. Hello everyone, I have a problem with my Linux mail server . I am not able to login from F1 to F6 sessions nor through telnet remotely. From F1 to F6 sessions I am able to get login but not the password prompt. From remote session I am not able to get login itself. Only through F7 GUI i am able to enter in to system. My telnet service is enabled. The only changes I did was changed my DNS setting. Can any one help me in this regard. Hello Devdas.... Thanks for the help... but I want to check the exit code.... How can I access the exit code and assign the exit code value to a variable. I tried using the command var=`ping -c1 -w3 202.54.1.30` echo $var This still outputs the regulr ping output | if my eth crd is down...it still o/p's "connect : Network is unreachable" directly to the monitor,without assigning the Exit Code value to the variable. Sendmail configuration problem

Hi there, I've been trying to configure sendmail on my office box. (version 8.12 on Debian 3.0 Woody) I would be using the office smtp router as the smarthost. I need to configure my daemon to authenticate (AUTH = LOGIN) to this smarthost before trying to send mail. I have checked out the procedure using the telnet to port 25. It sure works. Now to configure sendmail for this we have two options: DefaultAuthInfo ( and provide the mapping in the file thats the argument of DefaultAuthInfo) or The 'authinfo' ruleset : This can be done by using FEATURE('authinfo') and providing the mapping. The problem: 1.> I could not find the exact syntax for mapping the auth using DefaultAuthInfo. Yes, I have checked the documentation. It seems that this option is deprecated and would not be supported in the future versions. 2.> So I went on and used FEATURE('authinfo') and provided the mapping in the appropriate file ( The syntax is documented for this) 3.> However what happens is that, even though sendmail correctly tries to use the smarthost for delivering all non - local mail, it does not try to AUTH before the MAIL FROM: ! I checked this using the '-X' option. It returns the non - local mail to me saying it gave a 505 - Authentication required error. Incidentally, I had even tried to configure exim before this for the same situation. Even after making all the required configurations for exim, it would not AUTH itself to the smarthost. I have tried to be lucid enough and hope to have explained the problem clearly. Has anyone out here experienced this before. I traditionally try out linux for short bursts of time and get sick of it or it stops dual booting and go back to m$ for day to day work. I wanted to install redhat 8.0 from PCQ with win 2000 pro Is PCQ 8.0 different from redhat or only change is with the name and some instyallation options. How can I do that? What partition schemes to use for a 20 Gb? Is grub better than LILO ? How do I ensure in case of a booting problem my data in NTFS or FAT partitions are intact and easily recoverable ? I know regular back up helps but That may be too much at times. Will ge force nivada card and Proview LCD monitor be supported and what's the settings I need to use? Hello all, one of the servers which is under my administration is a Linux box with dual processor, currently running redhat 7.3 while checking through the logs (/var/log/messages) found out this error Jul 31 19:03:46 XXXXX kernel: ISR called reentrantly!! Jul 31 19:26:55 XXXXX kernel: ISR called reentrantly!! Jul 31 22:27:50 XXXXX kernel: ISR called reentrantly!! The server is running a webserver and a mailinglist server When interacting with the hosting company they said it is BIOS issue , hence we updated the BIOS. then upgraded the kernel. Kernel Upgrade: ============ Latest linux kernel version: (as of 10/08/203) Linux version 2.4.20-19.7smp Old linux kernel version (when the error did occurred) ================== Linux version 2.4.18-24.7.xsmp Now I wanted to knw how the error message shown above and the BOIS was related. Can someone throw some light in the right direction, I do understand that the hardware and the kernel as closely related... Is there more proper explanation of the relationship. Thanks for the reply, Philip. I am newbie at linux.I did go thru the diald Howto... I just wanted to clear one small glitch. When my eth crd is not detected, the system will give me an output "connect : Network is unreachble" on trying to ping.(ping,say VSNL) In cse I want to divert this commnd to an evaluation n it's value to variable in a script,I will need to 'grep' the output of ping. This I have tried already(grep o/p of ping when the network card is down) The o/p of ping is not fed to grep for comparing patterns, rather, the script just puts up the message of 'Network is unreachable' on the monitor,and goes ahead executing the script. I would like to know,is there any specific way I can catch this output and then grep it to evaluate and set the condition right for the script to detect the eth card is not being detected and perform the necessry software resolving. Hi, I am running Redhat as a proxy using Squid.The connection through internet is through cable internet. When the cable internet goes down, the modem automatically dials up to the ISP. I want the modem to dial up to the ISP only when the script detects any requests to be sent out to the internet. All, I don't know is, how to go about this. problem with shared libraries

i've done a fresh install of RedHat GNU/linux 7.3 (gcc-2.96-110, gcc-c++-2.96-110) on my m/c. i then installed the rar utility. but when i try to run it, it gives the following error: "error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory" i then did a "locate libstdc++.so", only to find libstdc++.so.2* in the /usr/lib directory. then i installed "wine" from the source code, that i'd obtained from a linuxforu cd. when i tried to run a windoze .exe file using it, it gave me the foll error: "error while loading shared libraries: libntdll.dll.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory" i'd installed gcc-3.2.1 previously (i did a fresh install to get rid of it, since there wasn't a "make uninstall" option available with the source code. i'd then installed blacksun java (j2sdk1.4.1). but when i tried to write a java program, and compile it using "javac", i got the error: "error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory") is there some specific way in which i need to install gcc again, or do i have to make some changes to my path? if i search for libstdc++.so.5 on the Internet, then do i copy it to /usr/lib, or somewhere else? what changes do i make to system variables? thanks for all the help. -- HACKER: Someone who loves to program and loves being clever about it. --- Pradnyesh Sawant (The Doubtfire) B.E. Hi, i access internet using lan. i have windows 98 and linux red hat 7.3 installed. While i can surf any website and use yahoo messenger in windows 98, i cannot surf most of the sites in linux and cannot use yahoo messenger. Only some sites like google.com can be accessed by both linux and windows.I can get my mails using email client in both linux and windows properly. On analying TCP Dumps , i figured out that my machine sends TCP Reset often..in linux while in windows it sends it rarely . In general internet connection under window is good while under linux is pathetic!!! What to do so that i get same internet connectivity in linux as i get in windows? highly in need of your idea, suggestions -vishal

Really sorry for the trouble. I should have read the docs in the source first. They explicitly tell me to upgrade my mod-init-utils package. I did that and atleast the modules are being detected. I finally convinced myself to try out beta kernels. And I downloaded the 2.6 test version. But the problem now is that modules don't work. Is there anything different that I have to do compared to the normal kernel compilation procedure? My 2.4 kernel still works fine (compiled it from source... so I guess I'm no a complete stranger to it.) Welcome to the world of kernel compilation!! Even I had the same problem, and i posted to the list. You need to install module-init-tools and then recompile the kernel. I tried emailing a couple of people off this list but that has not led anywhere. It seems terribly hard to find Hurd cd's in Mumbai.
