Dear Linuxsers, I have installed Tally Erp 9 on wine using OpenSuse 11.1 on a regular AMD Athlon Desktop.It work well. Now My issue is how do I load Opensuse to eeeBox b202 pc which has only usb based external drive. Previously I have used Unetbootin to create a Ubuntu Interprid loader.. When I use the same method for Opensuse it just does not boot gives an error /ubkern corrupt ? I have used the same ISO to make the DVD to load the other computer Please help me with this , At least a lan based installl should be possible But I don't know how to ? A question on security.

Hi All, Today a friend of mine showed me a security feature in Windows XP, which to my knowledge is not available under Linux.(Please tell me I am wrong). So here goes, he showed me a security feature in Windows XP wherein the user can setup a custom access to their own files and restrict access to others, including Adminstrators. Is there a way to do so in GNU/Linux systems (for root)? As I am not aware of any means, I was not able to give him any answers. This feature came to light when we were discussing our Company's adoption of IS)-27001. He has also claimed that this is also the reason why Linux adoption in Enterprises is very low. Hi, An acquaintance of mine works for a Mumbai based NGO[1]. They are looking to replace (and add additional features to) an existing application that they use to record and manage their data (I don't know the exact details about this yet). The current application they use was built by a couple of guys using ASP+MS SQL. They do not have the source code for the current application. So, they are looking to: a. Replicate all the functionality of the current application. b. Migrate the current data to the new application. c. Add a new module which provides a workflow similar to the existing one. d. Design the application in such a manner that allows addition of further workflows. e. Provide support and feature enhancement (for something like 5+ years) They also would like to share this application with their offices worldwide if they find it useful enough for their purposes. I strongly recommended that they go the Open source way by asking whichever vendor they choose to provide them with the source code under a FOSS license. I further recommended that they insist on building the application using FOSS (for instance, a LAMP stack). Now, since they are non-technical per se and it seems like their original software provider is no longer 'available', they need guidance/advice for the specifications itself. So, here's my request, can somebody in Mumbai ... a. Be willing to visit this organization, take a look at their existing application and advise them on the best (FOSS oriented) approach to take ? (It'll be nice if someone can do this without slapping a consulting fee on them). b. Build this application and provide the required support (This, of course, would be a regular business contract). Obviously, (a) and (b) can be the same person/company. Dear All, The Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) has released a draft 'National Policy on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) In School Education' (see http://education.nic.in/secedu/ict.pdf , I have also attached the policy). While the earlier policy draft did not have even a single mention of FOSS, the current draft states in para 5.3.2 "Free ware, free and open source software applications will be preferred". Certain other sections which are appreciable are - "4.1.2 The ICT literacy programme will endeavour to provide a broad set of generic skills and conceptual knowledge and not focus on mastering the use of specific software applications." It will be great if you can send in your feedback to MHRD, appreciating/welcoming the preference accorded to FOSS and also requesting if FOSS can be made mandatory instead of just preferred. using orca to read pdf files in evince

Hi, I cud get orca to start up and have configured it. But it is not able to read any page which is open in the evince document reader. The key binding for "reading entire document" is KP_add. I wonder what that means. Can anybody help?. Orca is only able to read menus or echo typed characters, words etc and that too is hardly heard (voice is cut). Regards, Kussh

Hi all, Does anybody know of any FOSS program in linux which can convert from flv format (video) to mp3 or ogg (audio) format. I am using the file conversion service at zamzar.com and it takes pretty long to upload large files. It would be nice if there was a program for this sort of work. Also earlier i had heard about a site to convert pdfs to mp3 files but can't seem to find the site. if anybody knows of a good site or software pls let me know. I have been trying to update my knowledge and many times the eyes get tired and so audio would help supplement the learning process. Thanks for any help. Regards, Kussh

Dear Rony, Since the data file is on windows server I mount the CIFS to linux & I have pointed Tally.ini to see the mount z:\mnt\Tally I am able to see the contents in Tally , but it frequently crashes or hangs and takes a lot of time to load the data. Dovecot Time moved backwards error

Dear Members, I have setup a small mail server for my office on ubuntu server "Hardy" running on vmware. It runs postfix +Dovecot +getmail + squirremail. Dear Members, I have installed Interprid Ubuntu Desktop on My EEE PC B202 which is Atom 1.6Ghz I want to use Tally 9 ERP on it. I Installed Wine from the package manager & Installed Tally on it. Tally opens fast but it does not open the data file fast, It hangs , the data files are on a windows share which I have mounted on to /mnt/Tally The same thing works ok on another desktop using Interprid , please help with the settings ? strange case of chm files which don't open correctly

Recently had gone over to linuxappfinder.com and was seeing the software collection of alternatives to windows softwares. Came across free-cad.sourceforge.net. Downloaded the help documentation in chm format (bottom, right corner of the home page under most downloaded section). Tried opening the CHM file with xchm. It opens as a plain text file with all the html tags etc. Maybe there are better (more uptodate) chm readers available now than the xchm I am now using. If anybody knows of such softwares, pls let me know. Earlier (on another computer while using ubuntu 8.10 or 8.04) i had come across another chm/ebook reader software using synaptic but haven't installed it yet on the 9.04 computer. Thanks, Kussh

setup vlc as my default multimedia application in ubuntu9.04

Right now totem is set as the default application for all multimedia related files and it does not work as it should--i.e. there is no sound when any multimedia file is opened--even for ogg or wav files. Video files run but without any sound. I can't get totem to work correctly but vlc works perfectly. I tried all the usual tricks--install the bad files, restricted formats, etc etc but totem does not work. gxine and others also work but totem does not. So my question is --which configuration file needs to be tweaked such that all multimedia formats by default open with VLC and not with totem? am using ubuntu9.04 and have an integrated sound card on an asus motherboard. Have changed the properties of most multimedia formats in nautilus to open with VLC instead of totem by default but there are cases such as while using search or other applications (such as kalarm) where the default system program for multimedia (ie totem) gets activated. Relax Folks, I never thought that my simple questions would lead to such a huge debate. My questions were very simple. And I got the answer too through these discussions. So I have come to this point (please correct me if am wrong or misinterpreted) 1. Just like Microsoft, Red Hat has a per machine License system (thats what its EULA specifies I suppose). This has nothing to do with trade mark, copyright etc etc. but Violation of EULA 2. Copying RH from the original CD (or using the same CD) and installing it on another Machine for which the License payment has not be done is similar to installing Windows from original or (copied CD) on to other unlicensed systems. This is refered to as Piracy I suppose. 3. On the machines without License, users cant get access to Microsoft Updates (including security, service packs, Internet Explorer, Media Player, etc.) as the MS website checks for Genuineness of the installed Windows. So if a user wants those premium facilities, then he/she will have to obviously pay for that in form of License thats what is referred to as Subscriptions in terms of Red Hat where the User needs to pay for support and upgrades. 4. Microsoft I have heard visits its clients (corporates) to audit whether they have installed their products on systems exceding than those permitted in the EULA, if found then the clients are Fined. There is a similar clause in Red Hat EULA (discussed in earlier threads). So from a Regular (Desktop) End User perspective I can understand that Microsoft:Windows and Red Hat:Linux Although we dont have an option of FREE Windows, we though have option for FREE Linux alternatives like Debian, CentOS, Fedora, Ubuntu, Open Suse, etc. So I think thats what answers the question. The objective of improving communication skills is so that one can understand and convey specs etc. If a person is skilled enough that he can convey ideas in imperfect english mixed with mumbaiya lingo ('kya baap, khali pili pointer ko null pe set karta hai. Runtime pe lafda ho jayenga.'), that is fine, as long as the person on the receiving end understands it. If you're working in a team, the team members must understand this too :P Of course, once we are past that stage, we'll understand that the best way to communicate is the most concise and precise way, so that most of the people reading it get the message. And that's where grammar comes in. The big point is that lack of communication skills is one of the big obstacles because of which deserving people do not achieve their potential. People must have enough communication skills to be effective in their work. Mentoring, as Mani points out could be an effective way of improving communication skills, but responsibility also lies with the mentee. I'm reminded of this old joke: Q: How many psychiatrists does it take to change a light bulb? A: Just one, but the bulb has to want to change.

Why are communication skills important in Software Development? Comprehension and verbal skills are required to read and understand, as well as convey: a. Requirements b. Specifications c. Books, articles and manuals d. Bug reports e. Project Plans f. Achievements g. Difficulties and obstacles coming in way of goals h. and more... More importantly, good communication skills help a developer prioritize tasks better. A good communicator can better grasp the urgency/importance of a particular situation or feature. And of course, innumerable other reasons. Now, one thing I have noticed is that there are many software developers, those with excellent academic records, who could be brilliant programmers or testers, if only their communication skills were better. Often such 'latent' good programmers find their way into organizations of all shapes and sizes. Sadly, more often than not, such professionals are unable to achieve their potential because of their Achilles' Heel: Communication. Often we hear reports of speeches by industry leaders or top managers who have said that graduates from <insert country or state or university> are unemployable. My belief is that the students have the fundamental material built in, but are only hampered by lack of good communication skills. Responsible organizations will want such people to achieve their potential. What are the options open to such organizations? Classroom Training? Online Training? I will appreciate if other people who have thought about this issue could contribute their opinion. If anyone has links to online articles which address this issue or online training programs, that would be very helpful.

But folks, these all apply to them who want to entirely distribute a new Flavor by reusing Red Hat code. My question lies related to End Users. Just for the example what my friend did. Obtained the Red Had Linux CD from institute as a COPY of Original CD, just like how Windows, Linux Mint, Ubuntu and other OS CDs are replicated and distributed. Now on Ubuntu's cover for example, they permit Users the exclusive freedom to replicate and distribute the CDs, although for Windows its Restricted, and I guess this would be even restricted by Red Hat since every CD may be charged per System. So my questions is will this END USER style of distribution and sharing lead to Piracy? Trademark Removal etc are all Programmer Level steps. Hi Folks, One of my friend was arguing me that RED HAT is superior to any of the FREELY available Linux Distro as it provides Support (although in form of Subscriptions). However I told him that he can get free community support for many other free distros and more over they are Open Source. Now for this he said that Red Hat too is open Source, and he has got one installed in his home through a CD provided by his institute where he is studying REHL. I asked him, whether he needed to enter Serial Key like Windows, he replied no, but he wont be able to use their support. So I told him that he is using a PIRATED version of LINUX. HE said yes. I went ahead to cross check Red Hat License Agreement, and saw it to be similar to Microsoft's EULA that states, you cannot install it on more computers than the licensed purchased for etc. Secondly if the Subscription expires, the OS will no longer be Legal until its renewed (similar to Norton Anti Virus) So my question is... Can Red Hat enterprise products be really considered as Open Source (as their website claims) http://investors.redhat.com/index.cfm *Red Hat is the world's leading open source provider. Please contact me offlist/directly if you have implemented: LDAP authentication, using Mac OSX 10.5 server with it's bundled Open Directory as the backend to authenticate users on Linux, OSX (10.4 and 10.5) desktops, and Windows XP SP3 desktops. A client has a setup of heterogenous desktop setup and wants to implement Directory Services for the organization. The composition is 80% Linux desktop + 2 Linux File servers (NFS+Samba), 7 OSX desktops and 5 Windows XP desktops). The user's Unix (Linux/OSX) profile is portable to the respective platform via LDAP and Windows profile is portable through Samba. Samba+LDAP back end needs to be configured on 2 Linux file servers as well on the OSX server (for user's home dir). -- Arun Khan PS - I have already tried openLDAP (on Linux), works with Linux desktops, OSX clients see the LDAP server but do not authenticate from the graphical login window.

Hi folks, While going through that Red Hat License discussion, I had completely forgotten that there was a thread regarding FYJC being restricted to IE Users (how mean of them!) Here's the solution to open it in Firefox. Its called User Agent Switch (I didnt get chance to real complete thread, so may be some one would have already suggested this solution, if not then please read further :) In Firefox click Toold > Add ons Search for "User Agent Switch" Install the addon Restart FireFox Click Tools > Default User Agent > Internet Explorer > Select version Do not restart FireFox Type the url http://www.fyjc.org.in in Address field Bingo, this works :) Bye Regards

BSNL punjab circle has recently introduced a scheme where they are giving broadband speed of around 2.4 Mbps at unlimited download for just Rs 550 per month thru a wireless CDMA data card made by ZTE china. The wireless card can be purchased for Rs 4200 and the data connectivity is limited to just the punjab telecom circle. This scheme has not been publicised and has been in operation for the last 3-4 months. I came to know about it by chance thru word of mouth and the demand is very high but supply very less. The problem is that i haven't been able to install it using wine etc in ubuntu 9.04 with the installation CD Can anybody help if they have installed/configured the same in ubuntu 9.04 etc? Kussh

Hi Guys, i want create multiple profile on a single linux machine(server class) so that multiple users can access the it (GUI ) from their client machines. Server OS is CentOS 5.3 For centralize authentication i am using Fedora directory Services I also have FreeNX server installed on the Linux Server and FreeNX client on the windows machines. Last year, 2008, the fyjc admission was made online using FOSS. The software is available for any one for asking. I was the architect on behalf of the government. I was instrumental in turning the decision of autorites from not going in for online to going in for online this year. That is when my contribution ended. Last year we used the latest MySQL (5.0) when our engineers had not enough experience( was that a sensible decision ? I feel yes as it was essentially a pilot) . It took two days to locate MySQL expert who was familiar with settings ( Courtesy Dainik Bhaskar) and the dying server revived in 10 minutes. While comparing last year with this, one may note the following: (not as excuses for failures) We had an entrepreneur to come forward taking no money from the government, no assurance of students using the system . It was optional. The physical form filling was alternative. The charges for service was Rs 5 , with exemption for first two applications. Instead , this year the centralised admission makes online compulsory for about 2 lakh students (after discounting the minority seats of about 1.5 lakhs.) Each student has to pay Rs 125/- The undersigned had offered the services for the govt as honorary. This time I was called in initial meetings. But later I was dropped. I may get a call again, I am told. What is at stake is faith of people in technology in mass usage. Also whether FOSS can serve better? jitendra

Printing to a Print Server

Dear All, I need to print to a Print Server, The print server is simply a Box with 3 ports to connect the printers (2 USB + 1 Serial). In Windows XP, the procedure to setup the printer is to install a driver for the print server called EZ Print by SMC. Create a Connection as if it is local and give the IP:Port Number to the configuration. Install the driver for the Printer and you are set. I have added a printer for ipp print using the CUPS web interface with the device URI as http://<IP>:631/ipp/PID<PortNumber> as int the windows printer configuration it looks like <IP>;PID<PortNumber>. The Error I get is Remote Device not Available. Current Device URI: http://<IP>:631/<PortNumber> I have tried many permutations and combinations and now Cups keeps on trying and remains at Processing and does nothing further. The following ports are open on the Print server. Telnet HTTP 80 Printer 515 IPP 631 Connecting to the Telnet/HTTP Port gives me the Admin menu for the Print Server. Any pointers will be welcome. hi, I just upgraded my FC10 to FC11. Booted from dvd and chose 'upgrade'. After upgrade, I did yum update. And my open office 2.x got replaced by 3.x, all my address books, book marks, passwords etc were all in the correct places. Everything worked out of the box. Obviously this is a bug. How do I report it and get it rectified. (Sorry, my device support only top posting) The term Open Source was coined by some members of the Free Software movement around 1998. This was started as a campaign to promote Free Software among businesses by not talking about ethical aspects, but only practical benefits of Free Software developing methods. Many people becomes uncomfortable, especially businesses, when talking about ethical responsibilities, so some people thought it would help the movement not to talk about uncomfortable things if the end result is larger community. But practically all open source code out these - using licences approved by open source initiative - is also free software - using licenses approved by free software foundation. Only exception is reciprocal license, which is considered as open source but not free software. But there is not much code that uses this licenses. What Krishnakanth was talking about is copyleft. Free Software foundation encourages everyone to use a copyleft license to protect the commons, but it is not a mandatory requirement for a free software. I suggest every one to read the free software definition again. BSD licensed code is as much free software as GPL licensed code. Hi, I have a web server which has CentOS Linux 2.6.18-028stab059.6-ent kernel and Apache 1.3.37 running on it. 2 days back I got one script to test DoS attack on website. It is called slowloris.pl from http://ha.ckers.org/slowloris/ I run that script against my server and it worked. It stopped my website for some time. That time all other services like SSH were working fine. Can anybody suggests any configuration changes at Apache and OS/Kernel level to prevent from this type of attack ? Hello, Some time back I had put up a challenge to the list to install Open Office 3 in Ubuntu 8.04 and looks like no one has been able to do that. Well in Windows XP you simply uninstall the older Open Office version and install the latest version. You could even install OOo3 over the older 2.x version. So on _this_ point I declare Windows XP the winner. ;-) On Saturday I have to remove Ubuntu 8.04 from 5 machines and install Ubuntu 9.04 simply because upgrading Open Office is not possible in Linux. -- Regards, Rony. Need help in using Rdesktop command without running X session

Hi, I have installed voyage linux on thinclient. I have installed rdesktop and Xorg on it. However coz of space issue I couldnt install any window manager on it. So I have to connect Windows server from CLI only. I tried following command: $ rdesktop -f <server ip>:3389 It shows "ERROR: Failed to open display" Is there any work around to resolve this issue without changing any hardware? Problem with Division

Hi, I'm sorry if this question has been asked before but I couldn't find any appropriate answer elsewhere and hence this post. Today while doing some calculation using bc I found a very peculiar thing. I was performing an operation -2 % -3 and the software reported the answer as -2. Now -2 > -3 and if I remember correctly then in divison operation the remainder is less than the divisor. So how come in this case the answer is not coming properly. Open Standards and actions by the FOSS community Follow up on the Department of IT's draft policy on open standards. It appears that some proprietary software vendors are blocking the policy. 3. FOSS in Education What the FOSS community can do in a) School Education b) Higher Education 4. Software Patents and other legal issues a) Take up pre and pre grant opposition for selected cases b) Take up the issue of Draft Manual which deviates from the Patent Act c) Take up cases with the Competition Commission, which are restrictive trade practices and are monopolistic. 5 Building political consensus around FOSS as India's best bet for development This is planned for the whole day and will start at 10.00 AM.
