hi i have FC4 on Server and i am trying thinclient networking with using LTSP. I could put 4 computers on thin client. For one computer i am getting problem. It has 200Mhz CPU, 32MB RAM, Trident Display. It is booting properly through LAN. It gets IP from DHCP also. Everything works fine upto login screen. at login screen X server cant show display properly. And computer get struck. What should i do ? Please help... Neelesh

MTNL Triband

I just got the MTNL Triband installed on my IBM X40 running RHEL 4WS and it was a snap! Once the hardware was plugged in, all I did was go to the terminal, do a "service network restart" and I was online! The MTNL guy who came to set up my connection had never worked on Linux and said that if he had to set this up on Windows XP he would have to do a whole bunch of configuration. Hide headers with command line

I tride RET=full option while giving sender's id but even that is showing ip of mail server. is there any way i can hide complete header of my mail? [OT] Digital Certificates

back to the thread, two things first: 1. I work in TCS, but am not here to defend it 2. Starting this thread back only to solve the problems with digital certificates issued by TCS-CA (I once worked on the digital cerficates and related tools support for GNU/Linux here). We tested the digital certificates with Firefox and OpenSSL on GNU/Linux and they did work. While I have no information about what M$ windows tools and software are being distributed along with the USB token, but as far as I know all those tools also exist for GNU/Linux - atleast inside TCS ;) We normally associate the lack of awareness of issues like vendor lock-in and the philosophy of FOSS etc., with non-IT people. The sad truth is that even with the IT community, there are lots of people who are not aware of these issues - lots of them in big companies like TCS. The older have an excuse but there are a huge number of youngsters who are not aware too! Well, in my opinion (a) this is not something done intentionally and knowingly; at best it is ignorance, at worst it is succumbing to a perceived convenience (http://www.zdnet.com.au/news/software/0,2000061733,39168780,00.htm) and (b) as many people as possible should protest -- the objective is to raise awareness of the issue both in the user and the developer communities, not to blame or malign someone. will see if we can do anything about it, from inside! Firefox and Yahoo

Hello All, I happened to visit a yahoo groups site and in the photo album section I could only see blank squares instead of thumbnails. On clicking the photos I get an empty space that resembles the photo size but no photo in it. If I right click on the empty space and select 'view image', it opens a new page and then downloads the image. Same with thumbnails too. On Netscape in Windows, everything shows normally. I checked the page source and its mostly javascript which exists in Linux too so why this behaviour. If anyone else is on any yahoo group that gives album access then please try viewing the album in Firefox. 5.1 Sound cards under Alsa/Gentoo

Hi all: I have an Audiotrak Prodigy 5.1 LT Card ( known in the ALSA world as ICE1724 (Envy 24 HT/PT). The card has Front, Rear, BS(HP), CW and Digital out connectors for audio. I want to get 5.1 audio to work on Gentoo Linux 2006. Here's what I've configured on kernel 2.6.15: - Alsa enabled (nothing else in the alsa sub menu enabled) - Alsa drivers emerged (1.0.10) - Alsa 1.0.11 drivers installed separately after the 1.0.10 was unmerged. I get audio on only the Front and BS connectors. I don't get audio on the Rear or the CW connectors. I don't have any audio accessory capable of connecting to the digital audio connector. I am about to read the alsa-project site wiki. However, I'm new to 5.1 audio and have some newbit-class questions: 1. Does anyone have experience with using 5.1 or 7.1 sound cards under Linux ? 2. Are there are special settings that you need to do ? 3. Are there any special audio connectors ? 4. I have stereo and mono MP3 files that I wish to play via GStreamer and xmms. Digital Certificates

Hi Everyone, I attended a lecture at Indian Merchants Chambers yesterday on the new government rule called MCA-21. The new rule provides that all document sumbitted to the Ministry of Company Affaires now needs to be given in digital form only. They will no longer accept physical documents. Further, each of these documents will have to have a digital signature of the persons who were earlier required to sign the physical documents. This is the first step to moving all governement documents to digital form and save huge time and cost of users now wasted in standing in line and submitting documents to the government. The next will be Tax authorities, followed by Excise and Customs. Land Records are expected to be next thereafter. There are 7 companies in India who are authorised to issue digital certificates recorgnised under the Information Technology Act. TCS is one who was present at the seminar and demonstrated the use of the digital certificates. For those who have not used them, these are stored by TCS on USB Tokens, which look like USB Pen drives but are read-only 32KB drives with processors built in. You are supposed to insert in the token in the UCB port and then ask the Online-Form to pick up the digital certificate from the token and add it to the document to submit to the government. These certificates are based on 128 bit encryption and PKI. TCS assured me that it is designed to work both on Linux and Mac in addition to Windows and that they are including the relevant drivers with the token. However, the additional software tools they are providing for automating digital signatures on other documents will work only on Windows. I would like to know if any of you have used the Digital Siganture / Digital Certificates that is being issued under MCA-21 and can confirm that it works properly on Linux. The other providers of Digital Certificates includes MTNL. While TCS is charging Rs. 2075 for a 1 year valid certificate, MTNL is charging Rs. 350. They are sending it to you on email !! Ofcourse, they are doing this only at Malabar Hill Exchange and you have to go personally to their office and they will verify that you are the person whose name is on the form and your address, photo, etc. I do not know much on Digital Certificates. However with this becoming a major part of commercial and business transactions, I hope what the government is doing does not work only on Windows. If necessary, we (or perhaps FSF) will need to initiate a dialog with the government. In the next year, it is estimated that just government requirment will result in over 1 million digital certificates being issued. I think the actual figure will be close to 5 million as more government depatments like Income Tax, Sales Tax, Excise and Customs departments move to "digital documents only" mode. (Just imagine - if every shop keeper needs to file his sales tax returns online and needs a digital certificate to be able to upload the return to the government). It would be very important for us to ensure that Linux gets supported in the process. Regards Saswata

Hi, The best solution is to use Synaptic. Synaptic was originally meant to be a front end for apt-get on Debian based systems. I saw it first in Ubuntu. However it has been ported for RPM based distributions too. Atleast I had used it myself, with great satisfaction in Fodera Core 2, although I have not tried it out on Fedora Core 5 yet. However I read that support for apt-get would be removed in later releases of Fedora Core. You can get the Fedora Core 5 RPM at http://atrpms.net/dist/fc5/synaptic/. If anybody wants I have the tarball too, and can mail it to you individually. Hope it helped, Debarshi

[OT] OSS Idea.

Hello All, This is with reference to the earlier discussions on OSS philosophy and I have started a new thread for an idea to promote OSS production in India. For the discussion, free OSS here will be refered to as free (as in freedom) software. Free software is generally looked upon as a conmmunity effort with little monetory gains for the programmer himself. Those who install and setup systems make money on the installation but the programmer may generally get little. Most of the training institutes too train students on the commercial closed source platforms as thats where they make most money. Free software creation is still not very popular in India due to lesser econimic gains for the programmer. IMHO, free software can commercially sustain itself only if its creation is sponsored in a way thats equivalent to what commercial software creation gets. This sponsorship can come directly from corporates and every other imaginable commercial establishments that make use of computers. Now the question that comes up is why will they sponsor free software creation? What do they get or benefit in return for their huge donations? As an incentive, the donors can be provided free tech support right from installation to maintainence in a limitted way and relative to the amount of donation. The incentives can also include free writing of drivers for special needs. The programmers are paid market rates for writing the softwares and the industry and commerce benefits by getting free ( as in beer and freedom ) software thats stable, secure and robust. This software can be posted on websites for anyone and everyone to freely download and use. No one will ever have to use commercial or pirated software and once the platform gains popularity, even institutes will offer courses on oss platform. The commercial software makers too will be forced to create software for open free data formats. Device makers too will have to provide drivers for the oss platform. As a heavily populated country, our industry is huge and very diverse and even a few thousand rupees from the majority can be enough to sustain foss growth. In return, they cut down their heavy software expenditure. The FSF India or such organisations can set guidelines for creating and running this model so that there are minimum trouble areas and the system runs smoothly. We accepted non-free licenses because we wanted to give voice to people writing software and sharing source code who did so for reasons other than moral freedom. Is it wrong to accept works that strive for technical excellence independent of social agendas? As a scientist and an engineer (BS CSE, University of Pennsylvania 1986) I have to say no: the scientific method is, and must be independent from all moral frameworks. Does this make science immoral or amoral? Certainly there are those who apply or ignore science in immoral ways. But science itself is concerned with evidence and falsification, not morals. Open Source allows for software to be independent from freedom, while at the same time offering the kind of freedom that comes from independence. My personal preference, which has not changed in nearly 20 years, is the GNU General Public License. I like it for personal reasons. I like it for social reasons. I think it's a great license for protecting legitimate business interests. But I don't like it enough to use it as a battering ram against all other possible licensing models. And I think that the Open Source Initiative has helped to foster a far richer software environment by creating a larger tent in which more developers can experiment with and find their own best licensing models and software projects. Problem X-server in LTSP

Hi I have FC-4 Server. I have done thinclient network for three PCs. I have problem with monitor resolution. Clients boot from network and it comes to login screen. But X display gets flickr on some b/w monitors. Display gets ok on color monitor but we cannot use color monitor as we dont have it. I think coz of monitor refres rate it is happening. Some b/w monitors give display ok. Resolution is 800x600. 1. How can i define resolution and monitor refresh rate for thin clients in LTSP ? please reply neelesh

Using ELinks access HTTPS sites.

Hi, I was trying to use ELinks (ver 0.11) on Fedora Core 5 system to browse the Web. However I am encountering a problem whenever I try to access sites which use SSL and HTTPS. eg., I can not log into GMail although the http://mail.google.com/mail comes up. Similarly I can not log into Yahoo Mail, Savannah, etc.. The error window that pops out reads something like: "Unable to retrieve proxy://172.16.20.2:3128/https://login.yahoo.com/config/login?... SSL Error" I am behind a SQUID proxy (172.16.20.2:3128), I have set the HTTP, HTTPS, FTP proxy:port using the ELinks options menu item. However does not seem to have any problem dealing with the above site. However I like ELinks' rendering of web pages and hence would like to use it more than Lynx. Any ideas? Hello: For a project that I'm working on, I require that the customer's computer be accessible over the Internet. Using dyndns, I'm able to allow inward HTTP and SSH connections. However, the IP address allocated to my DSL router is a public IP address. I assume that if my ISP providing my DSL service were to also place me behind a NAT (allocate me a private IP address), then I'd have to rule out inward connections. So, is my understanding correct ? Hi guys, I just came across a slashdot article ( http://hardware.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/04/17/124244 ) which said that the user base of IBM Lenovo laptops is falling just because they are now being manufactured/owned by the Chinese. I just want to get your opinions. Some say that the quality has indeed deteriorated while others say its just psychological. Many feel that these people are just plain biased while some say that the Chinese are less accountable than their american counter parts. Personally, I am not biased against the Chinese but Chinese goods tend to have the "cheap" feel to them and I think that they have definitely lowered the quality and have cut costs at the same time while trying to improve their margins. Hello All, Postfix, mutt and fetchmail are now up and running. Is there any way I can copy a url within a message in mutt in one terminal and paste it in the go option ( go to url) in lynx opened in the second terminal? How do I secure my fetchmailrc? cpio archive size limit.

Hi. I created a cpio archive of my / directory, excluding unwanted directories like /proc, /tmp, and /dev called fullbackup.cpio. The size of the archvie is 5.1 GB. Now when I try to extract or list the contents of this cpio archive, I get the following error. [root@appsdms /]# cpio -itv < fullbackup.cpio cpio: standard input is closed: Value too large for defined data type Is there a limit for the size that a cpio archive can have? My filesystem is ext3 (RHEL AS3). I wanted to backup this data to tape, and wanted to test it by saving it to my hard disk first. Googling for the exact error didn't help apart from mentioning some 2GB file size limit for ext3 (??) Regards, NMK.

configuring the lirc receiver

( referring to the last ilug talk on lirc) i have a creative infra cdrom drive with it's remote too. I went about installing lirc , put the creative infra remote specs in the lircd.conf file etc. After starting lircd , the daemon , when i try to connect to the device by running irw (say) the lirc daemon stops. i checked /var/log/lircd ( i run Debian Sarge kernel 2.4.27) i got this lircd: lircd(creative_infracd) ready lircd: registering local client lircd: accepted new client on /dev/lircd lircd: Creative iNFRA driver: begin search for device lircd: Probing: open of /dev/sga failed and so on.... it repeats the last line till /dev/sgy is it because the receiver is not properly configured ? i remember Rajiv using /dev/sg1 as the device (scsi) . How do i configure the creative infra cdrom drive as a receiver ? sharan --

Hi, My H/W vendor recommended MSI RS480/RS482 motheboard with AMD-64 for me. But I have a few doubts about its Linux compatibility. Hi. How do I determine the number of physical processors installed on my server from within the OS? I used to trust /proc/cpuinfo till I came across a Xeon box which had four physical CPUs, but /proc/cpuinfo reported eight. Talk of multithreading! Surely there must be a way to find the correct number of physical CPUs? Something like.. No of CPUs: 8 ( 4 Physical ) Regards, NMK.

Posgresql help

Hi All, I have installed posgresql 8.1 database in my system(RHEL3) . It was installed perfectly and i also compiled it with gmake and gmake install later. i added user posgres for creating database and made him owner of /usr/local/pgsql directory . I created a db called db1 with initdb -D and createdb command and all the datas were located at /usr/local/pgsql/data .but when i tried to create a user or start teh database with psql .. it throws an error saying server is not running locally.. three questions 1) what port does posgresql listen? 2) What services i need to start? 3) Later how do i integrate with apache in future. Which sharedlibrarly do i need for that? Rgds AK

We are going to create a mesh network of about half a dozen access points on 15th April at HBCSE campus with the help of Fred Pook, a Netherlands based hacker/enterpruener who works in the suburbs in Goa. If any of you are intersted to join in this hands-on workshop please come to HBCSE on 15th about 10am. It is a day long workshop. We expect to finish making the mesh by evening. The bank was looking for a robust platform that could guarantee it "high availability of services and uninterrupted call traffic". It had options but finally decided on Linux for its core business applications. "Today, we are really happy with Linux that has delivered 99.99 per cent uptime so far," says Pritesh Thaker, AVP, IT, UTI Bank. The bank, in fact, is now planning to base its credit card-based system on Linux too. UTI is not the lone player to swear by Linux. Eveready, a leading manufacturer of dry cell batteries and flashlights in India, has built a mission-critical resource system to automate all functionalities of its daily business using the Oracle e-business suite running on a Linux platform. Central Bank of India has implemented Linux in nearly 3000 branches. The Penguin (official mascot of Linux), it appears, has finally marched into enterprises like IDBI Bank, Canara Bank, New India Assurance, LIC, BSNL, IRCTC, ABN Amro, Airtel and even the governments of Maharashtra and West Bengal. The list, of course, is not exhaustive. In most cases, though, the implementation of Linux in Indian enterprises is by Red Hat (primarily since Red Hat Linux has been popularised by the media and offers support for Linux which, being open source, can be downloaded for free and has no upfront licensing fee). Otherwise, one can choose from the hundreds of other Linux distributions - Mandriva, Debian, Suse, PCLinuxOS, Knoppix and Ubuntu to name a few - for desktops and enterprises. "All verticals are ready for Linux adoption today. However the banking, financial and insurance services (BFSI) and government markets have been pioneers of sorts in adopting Linux. The retail segment is also gaining ground quickly, along with verticals ranging from telecommunications to media and entertainment. "In India, we are increasingly seeing corporates running ERPs and mission-critical applications on the Red Hat Enterprise Linux platform. Large databases and blade servers are being powered by Linux to run online share trading and lottery applications," says Javed Tapia, CEO, Red Hat. The Indiabulls group is a case in point. Indiabulls runs its Internet trading platform - Oracle 9i - on Linux. This system, which handles 40-45 per cent of Indiabulls' revenue transactions - nearly 10,000 customers are online at any point of time and transactions are in the range of Rs 1000 crore (Rs 10 billion) - runs on Linux. The online share trading infrastructure at Indiabulls generates close to 150000 database queries per minute. "Linux has become prettly stable. We never considered Windows because of the perception that it has a lot of vulnerabilities. Hence, we adopted the Linux route and are satisfied with the results," says Tejinderpal Singh Miglani, CTO, Indiabulls. IDBI's Sanjay Sharma, Head IT, corroborates this view. IDBI has been using an Oracle HR management and financial accounting system, which runs on Linux. From Sharma's perspective, this is a "mission-critical" application. "We did evaluate options like Unix and Windows too. However, we did not want to be tied up to resource-hungry applications and any particular vendor. Besides, you hardly have a problem of viruses with Linux," he says. Linux, indeed, is doing reasonably good business. IBM's business built around Linux, for instance, was worth $16 billion last year and is projected to be worth more than $50 billion, says the company's global head of public sector Linux sales, Mary Ann Fisher, who recently spoke at LinuxWorld, Australia. She added: "Governments worldwide are spending more than $3 billion a year on Linux hardware, software and services, and this is growing at 35 per cent a year. But it's the US military that is spending the most." "Mission-critical" debate Now, mission-critical applications, among other things, need servers. And for the first time, the server market in India is expected to cross the 100,000-unit mark in 2006. Servers are powerful networked machines for tasks such as handling e-mail, financial transactions, airline reservations and file storage. Based on the price, vendors classify servers as small (anywhere from Rs 40000 up to Rs 500,000), medium (from Rs 500,000 to Rs 1 crore) and large (over Rs 1 crore). They are identified as Intel (or X86 processor-based), Unix (or non-X86 processor-based) and Blade servers. Linux and Solaris are flavours of Unix. Windows and Intel form the loosely-termed "Wintel" brand. Back in 2000, India was primarily a Unix market in the enterprise. With the entry of certified and supported Linux solutions, Unix users in India found Linux an attractive proposition to migrate to. IDC has consistently reported Linux as the fastest growing OS in the world and predicts that the overall market revenue for Linux will exceed $35 billion by 2008. Globally, Windows narrowly overtook Unix in 2005 to claim the top spot in server sales for the first time, according to IDC. Computer makers sold $17.7 billion worth of Windows servers worldwide in 2005 compared with $17.5 billion in Unix servers. Linux came third. The Unix market, though, is still huge. Sun is trying to restore Unix fortunes as well by making Solaris an open-source project and bringing it to the x86 servers. The battle for Unix customers (traditionally, the server King) is not new, with IBM, HP and Red Hat all pushing Unix-to-Linux migration plans. This definitely has hurt Sun's profitability. Sun, in turn, released Solaris 10 last year as a free download (it has close to 5 million downloads). Praveen Sawkar, country manager, Solaris, Sun Microsystems India, admits that "Linux has gained some traction in the x86 server space and has managed to break Wintel combination's stronghold on this segment of the market". However, he adds, that most mission-critical applications in the world "continue to be deployed, almost without exception, on the SPARC platform". He opines it will be a long time before the industry will start basing their mission-critical applications on Linux. "In the BFSI industry, one of the largest users of mission-critical applications, Linux is used for end-user banking, algorithmic and analytical work (derivative analysis and risk portfolio assessment). It is yet to be used in core banking environments, something that can be classified as being mission-critical," asserts Sawkar. Microsoft concurs with this view. Sanjiv Mathur, director (customer and partner experience), Microsoft Corporation India, notes that according to IDC, 42.3 per cent of mission-critical applications worldwide run on Windows server platform. "With a 69.5 per cent market share, Microsoft has a strong foothold across all verticals including BFSI and government. Linux has a much smaller share of the market, which is limited to specific areas of high-performance computing and other workloads like security and edge servers, which have traditionally been on the Unix platform. So this whole perception of Linux posing a threat to Microsoft does not hold true. Linux growth is more from the re-platforming of Unix," he adds. Frost and Sullivan (India) - director ICT, Alok Shende, too, appears to be in agreement. "Linux is definitely getting into the enterprise. However, enterprises today need end-to-end solutions. Second, the price of the OS is a small part of the end-to-end solution. People should look at the total cost of ownership, which included long-term costs like services and people availability. Linux has to create a whole market around the product. While it has matured as a technology, it is wanting from a business perspective. And that will take some time," he opines. However, there are major companies that stand aggressively by Linux. Sandeep Menon, director, Linux Business, Novell West Asia, opines that Linux is increasingly being used as a platform of choice for mission-critical applications. "Several mainframes and super computers are running Linux. Linux is also been embedded in routers and telecom equipment. It is used by some of the largest banks, airlines and Internet engines in the World. What else can be more critical?" he asks. He adds that with proprietary software, the customer is totally at the mercy of vendor. If the vendor discontinues support for any reason, the customer can't do anything. In the case of Open Source Linux, even if the vendor stops support, the customer can go to anyone else for support or even support it using his/her own resources, given that the source code will be available. Ashutosh Dhanesha, country manager, Linux Business, IBM India, concurs: "Linux gives customers choice. Our philosophy on "Freedom of choice" for software, hardware and services and leadership in industry standards provides customers with security, flexibility and control of their IT infrastructure and applications. We see Linux moving to mission-critical applications such as ERP and even high end applications such as Seismic data analysis." "Linux is the most proactive as far as security is concerned. With a million eyeballs looking continuously at the code, bugs are fixed faster than they can be exploited. As opposed to a licensing approach that proprietary platforms follow, we sell subscriptions, wherein customers are automatically covered for upgrades and updates," says Tapia. Experts opine there is a Rs 600-crore (Rs 6 billion) market for open source software which is growing at a compounded annual growth rate of 35-40 per cent. A sharp rise in enterprise-wide adoption of Linux or Open Source is one of the primary reasons for this optimism. Gartner predicts that by 2008, 95 per cent of Global 2000 organisations will have formal open-source acquisition and management strategies. The Penguin, it appears, will give its competitors an icy path to walk on. Penguin facts * Linux is expected to have a 15 per cent share of the ERP market by 2007 (Peerstone Research) * 55 per cent of all companies deployed Linux by the end of 2005 (AMR Research) * There are over 1.2 million developers with Linux skills (Evans Data Corp) * IBM has more than 7000 services professionals working with Linux * Robert Francis Group (IBM-sponsored research) found security levels in Linux generally exceeded those in Windows, providing a more secure and manageable environment out of the box with significantly more functionality in terms of security integration and management * The Linux kernel programming code is better and more secure than the programming code of most proprietary software - based on a four-year analysis of the 5.7 million lines of Linux source code conducted by five Stanford University researchers

dd usage problem

Hello All, From the net I found a command to copy a cd into an iso file. dd if=/dev/cdrom of=file.iso This has to be given to an unmounted disc. However I got a series of continuous errors when running the command and the operation failed. What could have gone wrong? I am currently pursuing my T. Y. BSc. (I. T.) and much of what I have in my curriculum is pretty much using applications that work in Windoze! Considering the professionals in this list, can the software industry, especially, those who provide services in the open source areas using GNU/Linux, initiate certain programmes or take some steps to be a part of the curriculum developement team of courses which provide education about software development for University of Mumbai? I agree, this is not easy and needs the consensus of both the university and the industry, but someone would have to initiate it. Or students like me should put this request in the form of a letter to the university? We (BSc I. T.) have learnt about UNIX Operating system's basic commands in one of our semesters which actually inclined me towards using GNU/Linux as a mainstream OS. Dialup connectivity additionally

Hi I have braod band connectivity and gives very good speed. But for the last 2 to 3 months I have been experiencing problems with the same. It is sometimes not available for 10 days in a month. This hampers day to day work. I am planning a dialup internet connection as backup as i can atleast do normal routine work like cheking mails,accessing bank accounts etc. I want some wireless phone I was planning on Tata Indicom. PCQLinux GPL violation issue...

Hello all, And here we have it from the horse's mouth: http://forums.pcquest.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4523 The editor of PCQ has responded that they have _not_ violated the GNU GPL as they have modified only anaconda and the init scripts of FC4. _I'm stumped_ :O How in the world have they "remastered" an entire distro without modifying anything other than anaconda and the init scripts? They claim to have distributed the sources of anaconda along with PCQLinux 2006. I believe them. If thats the case then I am shocked as to how can someone: 1. FUBAR hardware detection 2. Introduce a whole lotta bugs 3. Break packages by simply editing anaconda and the init scripts...? Wow if it's really true then I am speechless. ms guys are really good at what they do :O And the threats galore. Now they think someone opening their mouth is defamation... >_< -- Dinesh A. Joshi

In fact FC2 detected my sound card which neither FC1 nor FC4 detected. However FC5 seems to be much better and I might say it is the best Fedora release ever. GNOME 2.14 is cool too. I made the switch to FC5 since I found the GNOME/Gtk+ libraries too old in FC2 and could not successfully upgrade GNOME 2.6.

HylaFax Successfully Installed

Hello All, I had installed the hylafax packages through 'adept' in Kubuntu 5.10 but never configured them. Finally I decided and google showed up useful links for the setup. The first one is the server configuration given here http://www.aboutdebian.com/fax.htm The server setup smoothly and using 'kdeprintfax', I was able to send messages to my fax machine. However I was looking for a fax printer that would be a part of my printer list when giving the print command. So this link looked promising http://xtronics.com/reference/Debian-print2hylafax.htm After a lot of haggling and bargaining with different qt3 libs, I finally managed to get 'faxfrontend' up and running only to discover that its similar to kdeprintfax. Both of these are separate utilities that need the file to be selected and then its sent. However I am still looking for that elusive fax printer that can be selected from the print menu. The Kubuntu 5.10 'System Settings' does have a printer setup with a 'print to fax printer' but its settings are blank. Any clues on how to link the fax applications with that fax printer? Hi. I've been trying to install RHEL 3 on an IBM x346. I needed an img file to load at install time for my Adaptec hostraid controller. The file is present at the IBM site, but the size is greater than 1.44 MB. The size is 1.47 MB and cannot fit into a floppy (which I would put into the drive for the "linux dd" comand to work.) Has anyone else encountered this problem, as I see that lots of img files are greater than 1.44 MB? Regards, NMK.

If list members like it, then perhaps we can make this theme as default. Many thanks to the folks at ubuntu-in.org for providing us this theme. Also, some days back we had a discussion regarding the non validating html used at our homepage. Few people had offered help in making it w3 compliant. PCQ Linux 2006 Lousy.

Hello All, The PCQ Linux 2006 writeup in the mag was quite impressive so I tried it out. First of all, the CD media is terrible, it has many file errors. First time, in CD1 itself it had some file errors. On inserting CD2, it simply went into CLI and said the system was ready to reboot. Next time it was another 'dhakka maro' session of opening and closing the cd (Sony DVD) tray but it finally installed. It is supposed to be FC4 packages based but it is a disgrace to the existing FC4. It could not go beyond 800x600 resolution. It did not detect the sound devices (Both these things worked fine in FC4). The Firefox setup in Kde showed weird behavior. It would not allow me to check/uncheck boxes and as I moved my mouse over it the tick marks would randomly appear and disappear. Finally I just chucked it. After almost a year of FC4 and Ubuntu 5.10, if PCQ comes up with such crap, it will only sabotage the FOSS cause. I won't be surprised if M$ uses these CDs to show people how good Windows is, over Linux. Regards, Rony. ___________________________________________________________ Yahoo!
