64-bit compilation

Hi, i have a amd-opteron 246 processor. with slackware 10 installed. i have gcc-3.3.4 when i try to compile any code with 64-bit flag it is giving me an error stating that 64 bit not implemented. Do i have to install a newer version of gcc? Google as well as gcc.gnu doesny say much about 64bit compilation .... Then it's upto you what you want to do. So if you share the line between X machines, via Natting or Proxy server, the bandwidth for each individual machine goes down in some proportion. Because not every machine is making a request at the same time. Yes, in the case of "Business" line, as also advertised by MTNL TriBand, they will assure you the speed for EACH of your machines. Hi Roshan, First of all don't refer me as SIR , Keep it reserved for somebody of real importance ... I am just a small entity ( I always feel a newbie ) in the Hacker Community .... We could be good friends....... Regarding the mail , Their is a catch in my statement itself if U read the mail carefully LINUX OPERATING SYSTEM was developed by Linus First of all LINUX is not a operating System at all.... It's JUST a kernel ........... So calling it a operating system is misleading, The Os which it actually refers is GNU / LINUX.... Which was definitely not developed by Linus alone.... It's a huge community effort all over the net , Which was started by Richard Stallman under the GNU PROJECT !!! GNU comprises more than 90% of the OS, which everybody is using today and unknowingly refering as just "linux" ?? While infact linux is a small ( i am not refusing it's importance ) part , called kernel which fits the GNU OS architecture so WE ( GNU FOLLOWERS )do not want to deny Linus any credit for Linux but also don't want everyone else using the OS to neglect the efforts and emotions of millions of hackers or Community who have contributed the GNU Project So FEEL PROUD to say I am using GNU / LINUX ( read GNU slash Linux ) Personally .. I am waiting for a complete GNU OS ..... :) I want to get rid of Linus ( i mean Linux and Linus : ) ) His views and statements are really not pro GNU... grub removal

Mandrake 10.1 Installation Report

Dear Friends, Got myself a dvd rom and the linux distros are now being tried out one by one. First the live cds were tried out. Knoppix 3.2 and Cool Linux. Knoppix is fairly good for a general live os setup. Cool Linux is a Russian distro and comes with a dvd player icon on the desktop itself. On booting, it gives a big list of boot options of different screen resolutions and kernel versions. This is a very usefull feature. This software is worth atleast to have a close look. The main software tried out was Mandrake 10.1. This is a 3 cd iso set and initially the installation does look dull with a low resolution keyboard only type interface. It had boot loader options like loading in the mbr or on the root partition. I wrongly selected the root partition and after reboot, nothing could be booted and I only got a grub prompt. The rescue option in the cd1 only reloads the bootloader, does not allow any changes. So the os was reloaded and this time the mbr option was selected. The os was loaded with the 'workstation' type installation. On reboot, it gave me choices of linux, and windows. Mandrake uses lilo by default. I tried to point to the rhel installation in /etc/lilo.conf but the lilo command reports failures. A peculiar feature of Mandrake is that root cannot log into the X mode. On typing a root password, the login window only giggles and wiggles. The root has console access only. In the console, a new user was created and this user gets X login and desktop. My sound card was detected without any hiccups. There is a very good all-in-one control centre that allows you to configure everything. It asks for a root password for access. You are still in user mode only. In this control centre there is a bootloader selection option and I chose grub on my root partition. This brought back my favourite loader and the /boot/grub/menu.lst was modified to point to the rhel os. Everything perfect. After the initial speedbreakers, I find that this is the most compatible distro to the new P4 systems. It has audio, video (media) players, a video editor too. The video player can play a video cd smoothly with excellent picture and sound with full screen mode too. There is a dvd play option too but I don't have a video dvd to test. The lx300 printer too got setup. My external modem gets setup in a jiffy using kppp. There are minor problems of no drivers available for my canon D646U scanner and the canon digicam. But as time goes by this may be available soon. There is a firewall that keeps you protected. The default desktop is the latest kde 3+ with nice little utilities. Open office is the latest 1.3 version. If anyone has a ppd file for lx300, please mail it to me. The linuxprinting site does not have it but it says that it can be available in your windows partition too, though its not in my xp nor in my winme. I have misplaced the driver cd. This file can be added to my driver in mandrake and this would enhance printing features. On a scale of 1 to 10, this distro gets between 7 and 8. Regards, Rony.

CDAC has placed a half page color advertisement in the Mumbai Newsline (Indian Express) and probably other papers about "The release of Free Tamil Software Tools and Fonts". They include 220 Tamil fonts, Tamil Office Suite, Tamil Spell checker, Tamil Browser, Tamil Email, Tamil e-dictionary, Tamil OCR. Ravi Ventakesan, Chairman of MS India is also going to be present. The venue is Hotel Park Sheraton, Chennai, 5 PM on 15th April 2005. Can anyone give a first hand report? IF you are part of "ALL" you are invited. The cdac site http://www.cdac.in is slow/not opening, so cannot get the details right now. But the effort if serious is great. Nowhere is the need to develop low cost applications more serious for national development than India. Not only low cost hardware, but low cost software is essential too. The potential and applications are limitless. And only the Government, (whose primary mission in theory, is not-for-profit but for people) is in a position to drive such initiatives at such a scale as required. Hi folks, I am running redhat linux 9(Kernel 2.4.20-8) server on Intel P4 system, with Western Digital ATA 40GB Hard Disk(WD400EB-00CPF0, ATA DISK). This server is acting as Firewall & Gateway. Running squid & vsftp for local users. When i power on my system this morning , it shows below message (and as per message i run "fsck /dev/hda" without any argument/switch. For your information i have added "fdisk -l" & "df -h" (All output prior to system CRASH). NOTE: i've added /var/log/messages output of 13-04-05 at the END of mail. Except that in case of tally in India, it is the one package which prevents a complete windose free enterprise. So imho an exception is called for in this case as it will hopefully generate sufficient ire against tally / interest in free alternatives. Btw KG i have downloaded avsap abt 45 days ago. Guess it's time to shake the lethargy. Saswata has promised domain knowledge. The INSTALL instructions need to have distro specific sections for Debian. Also dependencies should be made available for debian alongwith the main package. Hi all, While following some Recovery HowTo ( http://www.antrix.net/journal/techtalk/reiserfs_data_recovery_howto.comments ) I got problem of "File size limit exceeded" . Anyone tried to connect to the net via - Phone GPRS (MTNL)

Couldn't use the net on my RHL 8 coz the modem doesn't seem to be supported. But the driver disk for the modem has a dir called Linux 6.1 full of .c files. Read me doesn't work. Anyways was wondering would it be possible to use the NGage QD as a modem with GPRS and connect ? Has anyone tried this ? Would it be better or worse than Dial Up? and the Million$ one can it be done via Linux RHL 8.0 ? Thanks, Gishu Pillai

Update: The tally dealer insisted that their 6.3 will work on linux and they had CONFIRMED it from the Tally people itself. I asked how? They said some will work. I asked if there is a linux version of the installer, he said no, the same one will. I said it's not possible. Remember I want to use it as a server and client. He insisted. To humor him i said find, come and install. So the person comes to the office with the package, loads the CD on a RH9 platform and tries to run the setup.exe or install.exe file. Needless to say it did not work. But since I am no PHD in anything linux and would like to give a benefit of doubt before writing off somebody, was it possible that the person could have installed tally from the CD that they supplied? Remember even the package said the system requirements as Windows 98 n Above. So it's 10th April already and I am without a viable alternative Account package to Tata EX which is as Windows dependant as one can be. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Finally I got my Data Back ( Reiser FS )

Hi all , Thanks to God and Linux Hackers who write down such helpful documentations. Finally I am able to recover my data back ;-)) It was painful night but got success to get my data back . Such joyful felling :-D you can imagine . I first create backup of my formatted partion into singal file of name "filesystempartition" . linux:~ # dd if=/dev/hda2 of=filesystempartition Using reiserfsck command I rebuilds the entire filesystem tree . linux:~ # reiserfsck --rebuild-tree -S -l recovery.log filesystempartition . Create "recover" directory to mount "filesystempartition" using loop option . linux:~ # mkdir recover linux:~ # mount filesystempartition recover -o loop I change directory in lost_found directory where all my recover data will be present . But all files and directories are in number ( inode ). linux:~ # cd recover/lost+found/ So I search for my particular file "amit.doc" which was in "/home/amit/Documents/amit/amit.doc" . linux:~ # find | grep amit.doc ./1898_246487/Documents/amit/amit.doc I guess that "./1898_246487" is my "/home/amit" directory . linux:~ #cd ./1898_246487 linux:~ #ls And ha ha ;-) I found all my directories and files from my "/home/amit" directory . Simple reiserfsck and dd commands are help me to recover my data . This is magic of Unix . i think tally and linux thread is no longer relevant. someone asked if tally worked on linux ... list responded ... dont know what is the fuss about it now ? if anyone who is willing to pay for tally and is ok with the vendor lockin but still wants to move out of windows into linux .... i will consider it a first step towards moving to FLOSS ... not bad .... someday when oss equivalent of tally will be ready and he will gladly move to it for those who are really serious about teaming up to build FLOSS accounting package for indians sud possibly team with existing projects, contribute and accelerate the process. no point reiterating the point on the list .... a SIG sud be created for this and serious attension sud be paid .... i wud be more than willing to be a test user for it Regards Harsh

Tally and Linux

Had to ask all the gurus who use tally, can u import the data into another database. ie.mysql, sql, oracle, (I know i'm going to get abuses for next two) access, sql. If the answer is no have you ever thought what are we all going to do if tally tomorrow closes shop? Think about it. As far as Tally 6.3 goes no i've not suceeded in doing this one even through wine. But I have seen a pirated version of tally 5.* work on wine, u will have to change the path in tally.ini file as to where the data is beeing stored (search the archives it's discussed before). Tally claims that 7.2 has a linux version (with rpms for redhat) I've written to them for a demo (No luck). Derwyn

I had purchased tally in 95 and had a big spat with them about their requirement of installing OS2. I wanted it to work on windows 95 (jeez the idiocity - but then hindsight is a very exacting science). And had them sign a clause that they will give me the windows version free of cost. They did in 97 after threatening them with legal action. Two years or so ago a tally rep calls up and asks me which accounting package i use. Tally i say. He says that they have a special super discount for users of pirated tally. I ask him about legit users. He says sorry no discount. He then wants to know my licence number which ofcourse i refuse to give. Imagine trying to find that stupid dongle (which takes half an hour to crack anyway) in my junk box. He then threatens legal action. I told him i would love nasscom or whoever was their shill to raid me as it would guarantee my happy retirement to hawaii. Which reminds me of licensing issues discussed a few days back. Turns out that you cannot combine with gpld code anything (data, code, images, logos, anything) whose terms of distribution violate the gpl. So if RH suse whoever includes their logo in a piece of gpld code and then asks you to remove that logo from the code, they are violating the gpl. Which means that you only have to remove logos which are standing alone. Then copy and redistribute to all and sundry. rgds jtd

Dear Vickram, You have to define where is your /boot directory is it kept in a seperate partition or is with the root partition, if kept seperate use your redhat bootable cd , at boot prompt type linux rescue and then type chroot /mnt/sysimage, then type in grub-install --recheck /dev/hdax (the partition no. of /boot) at the prompt. I want to add the Debian DVD to Ubuntu's repository. To that end, I've copied the proper entry from Debian's sources.list to Ubuntu's sources.list. However I need to add some files to Ubuntu's /var/lib/apt/lists. They are the Debian counter parts of the following files :- Ubuntu%204.10%20%5fWarty%20Warthog%5f%20-%20Preview%20i386%20Binary-1% 20(20041020)_dists_unstable_main_binary-i386_Packages Ubuntu%204.10%20%5fWarty%20Warthog%5f%20-%20Preview%20i386%20Binary-1% 20(20041020)_dists_unstable_main_binary-i386_Release Ubuntu%204.10%20%5fWarty%20Warthog%5f%20-%20Preview%20i386%20Binary-1% 20(20041020)_dists_unstable_restricted_binary-i386_Packages Ubuntu%204.10%20%5fWarty%20Warthog%5f%20-%20Preview%20i386%20Binary-1% 20(20041020)_dists_unstable_restricted_binary-i386_Release I've found them but they are named simply Packages and Release in the main and contrib folders on the DVD. [OT] HDD Cable Problems.

Dear Friends, I have experience quite a good number of startup/boot problems in computers (M$) of either HDD not being detected during boot or getting detected after a few *minutes* or the comp giving registry errors. The problem in all these cases was the new thin fine wire HDD cable that comes with the motherboards. On replacing this cable with the older normal cable, everything is just fine. I have been seeing that off and on this list keeps talking about Tally and how to run this on GNU/Linux? Tally is not a free software, and I dont see why users should discuss this on this list. On the other hand availability of accounting packages is a big problem and several hackers are addressing this issue, including some of our own list members. We should discuss those issues. This list is not for discussing propreitary software, but free software. In fact we should be discussing the issue of how to boycott the distributions that ship propreitary software and have explicit tieups with such agencies. This clearly shows that these distribution companies do not have any interest other than being in business. BTW, those of you who have some knowledge of this application, can you do some research about how the data is stored in Tally? Is this encoding a standard? Does this application support Export of data to any other standards? What freedom users have? Are the users locked in? etc. Nagarjuna

Hi all , I need help and suggestions from you experts and Gurus . While reinstalling SuSE 9.2 it hv overwritten on my previous SuSE 9.2 Linux Partition . I did not find any Reser FS Data Recovery tools . I want to know is thee any way to recover data from that partition ? Is there any software which may help me ? Is there any professional solution provider in Pune ? I repeat my problem in detail . I allready had installed SuSE 9.2 on /dev/hda2 . And I had free ( empty ) partition on /dev/hda3 . But SuSe 9.2 select by default /dev/hda2 as root partition for installation . In hurry I did not notice that . After first boot I notice that I had lost my partition . Because of this my /dev/hda2 partition got formated . Now I had lost lots of important data . But I hope that I have not overwritten entire partition . i.e As there was 7Gb of usefull data on /dev/hda2 . And I only installed or overwritten 800Mb of data on that partition while installation . So I hope that my /home/amit directory may get recover . Please help me . You can think of Projects and 300-400Mb of Mails means lots of Important Data . Amit.

Installing Xandros 3.0 on Celeron 1.7, Intel 845 board

Installed the Xandros 3.0 on a KDS Valiant P3 600 Mhz and it worked like a charm. Only had to mount the usb filesystem manually once and the 6 in 1 card reader became plug n play. Problem is when installing the same OS on a desktop Cel 1.7, 256 MB, Intel 845 Board, After the initial CD reading it reaches the "detecting hardware" stage at which point the machine shuts down it seems as i get the "Sync out of range" message on the monitor. Then machine needs to be restarted. Any clues why this should happen? unplugged all external devices just in case that was creating a problem, but to no avail. guys, i spoke on chat on the tally site. they are like ayega ayega.. nothing confirm as yet......... I even tried running tally 7.2 with wine.. loads of problems.. i wasnt even able to run 6.3 with wine. though i have sucessfully running 5.2 with wine. If any of you get any information on on 7.2 on linux. please put in a mail to the archive. the only solution tht i was able to c was as someone here suggested, run tally on win3k and run remote clients connecting to win3k. .. To All in the mailing list and the moderator in particular, Don't you think that the format of this mailing list is too complicated. All the posts are sent in batch within a mail from the moderator. This way it is too difficult to find a particular post, in which, there may be a solution to the problem queried. If every individual mail is sent as it is after being screened, it will be much easier. I know it is required to be screened, but there are other mailing lists that do it the way I am referring. Like for example the BEOWULF mailing list. The users send their mail to the main account and the main account sends it to all in the mailing list after it is screened. This just simplifies the task of finding a particular post rather than trying to find it among a heap of batch mails. This is just a personal suggestion and there is no obligation on the moderators part to accept it. Thank you, RC

How do we do a query for collecting the exact version of a particular rpm or package installed. I sometimes run into trouble trying to load an rpm which may be older than the one I have. I want to write a script which will get the version number of the rpm installed so that we know if the current rpm is newer or not. RC

Firefox users deprived of certain sites.

Happened to come across a couple of sites recently which would not be very friendly to Firefox. a)The sites being the Air Sahara/Indiatimes auctions site. b) www.visa-services.com c) Indiapost.org (The pincode locator feature dies on detecting non IE) Now, without taking the effort to get to a windows machine, are my chances of viewing those sites next to nil? Side Question: Has anyone run the Galileo software (travel bookings) on linux? Details about the sites not opened in Firefox. The Indiatimes auctions site gives this message at some point after going through 2 steps. "Error ! The current browser is either too old or too modern (usind DOM document structure)." The www.visa-services.com site gives the message "this site is best viewed with IE so n so and above and 800x600 res. And nothing can be done. cant click ahead. The Indiapost.org site (http://www.indiapost.org/Netscape/pinsearch1.asp) returns Page not found error message from IIS and the url in the address bar changes to "http://www.indiapost.org/Netscape/pinsearch2.asp" So looks like they have a specific error message for netscape based browsers. So if I were to succeed in making my office windows free eventually, how would I be able to access the sites above and many such? views comments feedback, appreciated as always. Cannot login through kdm in Debian

I can't login through KDM - the login screen re-appears. GDM works fine. I can use KDE from GDM. I can also jump to console from the KDM login window and login from there - its only KDM thats the problem. Any idea as to what config detail I missed? -- Rohit V. U will also require to maintain the packages in the right order if you wanna use a cd install. So you will have to get the packages.gz file for each cd and copy only those packages from the dvd to a partition, then use dpkg - scan package to create the new packages.gz file, then burn the lot to cd. Quite a pain. I dont know of a simple method. Of course a perl or bash script could automate the whole process. But i find dvd to be better by far. rgds jtd

Dear all, I am using Philips chip based PCITV-card(Mercury make) using "saa7134" module (which is compiled in kernel). By default the module loads with card=0(generic/unknown) option which doesn't work. When I reload the module manually using modprobe with option card=3, my card works fine using xawtv. My question is howto pass card=3 option to "saa7134" during start-up. 1.2.0 is our second major DragonFly release and the first one which we have created a separate CVS branch for. DragonFly's policy is to only commit bug fixes to release branches. This release represents a significant milestone in our efforts to improve the kernel infrastructure. DragonFly is still running under the Big Giant Lock, but this will probably be the last release where that is the case. This will be last release that uses GCC 2.95.x as the default compiler. Both GCC 3.4.x and GCC 2.95.x are supported in this release through the use of the CCVER environment variable ('gcc2' or 'gcc34'). GCC 2.95.x is to be retired soon due to its lack of TLS support. The current development branch will soon start depending heavily on TLS support and __thread both within the kernel and in libc and other libraries. This release fully supports TLS segments for programs compiled with gcc-3.4.x. It goes without saying that this release is far more stable then our 1.0A release. A huge number of bug fixes, performance improvements, and design changes have been made since the 1.0A release. TCP SACK in, tested, and on by default. TCP Performance tuning (header prediction now works properly, ACK aggregation when operating at GiGE speeds, fewer pure window update packets). Major network protocol stack threading and other infrastructure work. ALTQ and PF (Packet Filter). TLS (Thread Local Storage) support. DCONS support (console over firewire). IPv6 improvements. Namecache infrastructure rewritten. Improved checkpointing support. NFSv3 greatly improved. Kernel callout_*() infrastructure revamped. A lot of USB fixes. VESA console and X support. A large number of general maintainance items, such as driver updates, bug fixes, and so forth. Upgraded installer includes an option to turn it into a standalone netboot server for mass installs, bug fixes, and other new features. The RELEASE is now branched in the cvs repository.

Does a windoze app exist for the fwt. if it does it is trivial and /b legitimate /b to reverse engineer the protocol. In the same environment "high end" boxes using windows 2000 server and NTxyz have an uptime of a week to 4 weeks. That too with umpteen sysadmins running helter skelter. While we have AMCs we hardly need to maintain anything at all. Disk life on linux is longer than on a windoze box. I ve observed that disks konk out on a windoze machine in about 3 yrs. But are still running on linux boxes (4.5 yrs +). Warning no hard data just my observation on 40 to 50 machines running in the same environment. No i did not supply the windoze box. Incase of home use desktops, the only time there is a problem is when the ISP "upgrades" his stuff. since the isp engineer knows no better than click this n that we have to go to the user's place to set things right. CAVEAT. No warranty or support if you install windoze. Ya i actually specify this clause in the contract. rgds jtd

Has anyone attempted connecting the reliance CDMA to a linux (or even windows) box with the aim of an application or script to read the messages OFF the reliance phone and depending on the content of the message, take whatever action? Basically am looking for a way to communicate programmatically with the reliance phones. I am sure someone out here must have tried it out? As a parallel to the Gnokii project?
