hi, i downloaded acrobat reader the linux version from the adobe site. the link is http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html now while installing as written in the install document i untar the file and the tried to run the install script by ./INSTALL command. but it was not installing . i am not being able to run it. cannot figure out why. please can somebody try this out and tell me. i am doing this on RH 9. thanks a lot........... __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? hi fellow linux users , thanks for your reply but no solution has worked yet. this mail is sum up most of your question you asked me. hope this can help you solve my problem. i downloaded acrobat reader from this link (linux version) http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html i untared the file. read the doument on installation. it said to run the INSTALL command. but when i did that it gave an error. Morning Guys/Gals, Me has an urgent need of advice from your end. Hoping for some pointers. For one of TCS's client we have configured Nagios and a host of other GPL'ed applns top aid him in Network Monitoring as part of a very large project. This last problem has me stumped. In my network consisting of purely AIX/Gnu-Linux/HP-UX i have to provide a single console for monitoring all logs and trigger an alert/alarm as soon as a particular message comes up in the logs. These logs will be both system and application logs and hence the messages to be tracked has to be customisable. Lemme know if someone has had this problem solved before or has any inkling of what appln we can make use of. RAM Testing

Dear Luggers, This is on topic. Has anyone developed a bootable floppy that only does the function of testing the RAM to simulate optimum operation conditions and give results if the RAM is good or bad. The problems with some RAMs is that they pass the bios test but make the system hang before starting the OS completely. It wastes a lot of time of the engineer to locate the problem as it could be due to a bad HDD, IDE cable or corrupted system files or RAM. Replacing the RAM is the only option available for testing it. The benchmarking programs that are available are platform dependent and need an OS to be loaded. If such a bootable floppy was available to test the RAM in full simulated operation then this would be very handy. Since the bios has drivers for the keyboard and floppy, no other drivers would be really needed and only the small RAM testing program would be needed on the bootable floppy. In future we can have other bootable floppies that test the CPU, motherboard and other devices *without loading any OS*. It would make life easier for the engineer. Regards, Rony.

[OT] My PC won't start...Please help!

Hi Linuxers, I've got this problem with my PC, it just refuses to start. The problem started a couple of days back. I was working on it and suddenly the entire system went off. I tried restarting, checked all the connections & cables. When I switch on the main power and press the power button on the cabinet, nothing happens. The motherboard LED comes on and the monitor LED blinks green but no chassis fan, no CPU fan, hard-disk not starting, nothing. System specs : AMD Duron 1.2 GHz ASUS A7N 266 VM mobo 128MB Hynix DDR SDRAM 20 GB Samsung HDD Samsung CDRW DAX LAN Card The SMPS was replaced only a month back. RAM was replaced 2 months ago. Fresh CMOS battery plugged in a week ago. The system is 2.5 years old. Sorry about the OT-ness and length of this post. If anybody could provide any help, I'll be infinitely thankful. hi friends, i have a problem. i have 3 computers with tally on them. now i am putting up a server which is linux. now i want to know if it is possible to move the data of tally onto the server and it still be accesable to the server. and a forthmachine will be added with a tally client(windows) to again view the data of tally. the server will have rh 9 . samba and mail server. another server will be added which will conatin firewall and proxy. now tell me if the tally thing is possible and how should it be done. especially if anybody has donethis in their company. thankx. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Hi all, Actually I had framed the question wrong in a jiffy.........thank you for the answers.. The problem i have observed with most of the mail servers in a corporate network is that there seems to be no authentication on the relay mail server........ I have observed that although the servers in the internal network of a corporate org have proper SMTP auth means, the relays or gateways for external mail delivery do not seem to authenticate the user. On such n/w's I'am able to send mail from xyz(a)copstop.com to abc(a)copstop.com using low level SMTP chat from home by telnet to port 25 to one of copstop.com's relay servers facing the internet. Where'as i'am not either of the two. The mail received by abc looks original but shows from : xyz(a)copstop.com to: <> undisclosed recipients in the header and logs. Is there a way out where I can stop mail from: xyz(a)copstop.com only when the relay server is accepting mails from other servers.(incoming) The gateway is using sendmail as an MTA. I would be happy to give any clarifications needed. Switch on and the browser opens onto some cricket site. Kmail opens up and downloads mails. Xmms starts playing some bhajans etc. etc. He wonders what are computer viruses and why everbody in his office are in such a state of terminal anxiety every few weeks. rgds jtd

Dear Luggers, This is off topic. The recent fire at Sion had 3 casualties. A woman and her child took refuge in a lift to escape from the fire and reach the ground floor. However, just at that time, the building's power was switched off for safety and the two got trapped inside, inhaled poisonous gases and expired. To prevent such tragedies from happenning, lift manufacturers could provide a mechanical crank inside the lift to let the occupants slowly bring the lift up or down to a safe floor. If the doors are the automatic type, then a mechanical arrangement to open the door in case of an emerrgency. As a safety measure, the door will open only when the lift has aligned with any available floor. If you know people in this profession, please pass on this message to them. Regards, Rony.

2 cpus instead of one

Hi, I have a few linux servers which in /proc/cpuinfo shows the number of cpu's, on some servers, however I have only one cpu but top and /proc/cpuinfo show's two. Any idea why does it show like this and what is a correct way for analysing how many CPU's are present on the system. Does this happen on only certain hardware, as I have noticed this on my SuperMicro and HP servers only. Thanks in advance... Regards, Keith

Hi, Can anyone point me to where I can get an explanation of the named statistics on the internet. I couldnt find much. The reason being in my stats, the failuers are showing 8483727, is that normal. People are not complaing about my DNS, and my Name server is running fine. inode problem

Hi, I have a mailing application running on RedHat 7.3, Every couple of months we have a problem with the inodes getting used up on the /var partition. There is a lot of space on the partition, However the inodes are used up by a lot of 0 byte files by this application. I just wanted to ask the gurus in the list, if anyone came across this problem and how they went about trying to solve it. I had to find out the 0 byte files in /var and then deleted the 0 byte files. Thanks.. Regards, Keith

mysql's grant command

Three problems.

Hi, I've got three problems: 1.Today suddenly I'm not able to boot from Yoper. GRUB gets loaded, I'm able to boot SUSE and M$ but when I select Yoper screen goes blank there's no activity even the keyboard doesnt work? Does anyone have any idea about it. 2. I'm not able to use 'mount' in Yoper. It used to work fine initially but only with CDRW and not with CD-ROM but that was ok as I was able to mount the cd. But now strangely I'm not able to mount CDRW through local user as well as 'root'. Here's a snapshot of what happens. http://www.geocities.com/latesh1/temp/snapshot1.jpg 3. I want to install 'wvdial' on Yoper. But when ever I try to install it, it gives me dependencies error. I use RIM to connect internet and it used to work fine in SUSE. I tried KPPP but it halts on 'Initialising Modem' also query modem results are blank. I connect my RIM through serial cable. Please help me out with this. Latesh.

Hello, I recommend buying Sony DVD ROM Drive. I have one and its definitely better than samsung. No ideas about LG make. Besides i would suggest you not to invest in combo. DVD writer costs around 6000 bucks and are good enough to burn both CDs (16/24 x) and DVDs (4x). Regards, Peeyush

Freezing the disk will cause the moisture to freeze inside (even if it is in an airtight bag). hi, this is a problem i find everytime i connect to a remote machine in college. whenever i connect to machine B from machine A using telnet i can not run any X application I do not have root access to any of these machine. There can be problem due to xhost or $DISPLAY. Can any one suggest the solution. Even if it requires root access just give the suggestion. regards

[OT] Investigating Accidents

Hello Luggers, Whenever an accident takes place on the road, the biggest problem is to find out who was at fault. This is even more important when investigating accidents involving public transport buses and trucks. If we have a video recorder that will record the entire bus journey, it would use up a lot of memory space with unnecessary recordings. Instead of that suppose we have a system where video cameras mounted strategically on the bus send their signals to an onboard computer mounted inside a safe black box. The recording memory will only be sufficient for recording one or two minutes of video recording. The system will be such that the older recording will be continuosly overwritten by the new one, so at any given time, the last two minutes recording of the bus journey will be available. Whenever there is a crash or sudden jerks or hard braking, the sensors mounted on the bus will send a signal to the computer which will zip the last 2 minutes recording into a file and send it by wireless networks to the control room's base station. This file can be usefull to investigate accidents involving public buses. Later on it can also be made mandatory on all private vehicles who will trasnsmitt the signals to a central controll room of the traffic department. Thanks and Regards, Rony.

hdb2 not mountable : super block inconsistent

Morning guys/gals, Am in bit of a soup here. I have an ext3 disk at a clients place of which one of the partitions has gone kaput. Essentially they are as follows: >> hdb1 : /boot >> hdb2 : / >> hdb3 : Swap /boot is mountable while / isn't. I have used the knoppix rescue cd and have tried to mount the partition but it gives me and error with the superblock. When i try mounting using the mount command i get an error saying that mount partition can't be recognised. Just last week this issue had come up. I asked the client to pull out the IDE cables, clean the machine and plug them in. By the grace of god, the partition got mounted again. This time around lady luck seems to have failed me. I am quite lost for a solution to the same. If anyone could pass one some suggestions to help recover the production data on the disk i would be highly obliged. Video issues with VLC 0.7.2 on FC2

Hi, I downloaded and installed the latest VLC 0.7.2. It is playing all the video files VCD, DVD with full audio support. However the video gets disturbed with green shadows. The picture orienation and geometry is not distorted, but every object (say face of a character in movie) gets a shadow with small small green squares. I am using abit ZM6 motherboard with ATI MACH64 AGP card (detected and setup properly by fedora during install). CPU is Celeron 500 MHz and RAM is 450MB SDRAM. I am using Viewmate 17" monitor. If anybody has some clue regarding this issue please help. The best way of reaching there is by a combination of Road and Rail. Mumbai has two main suburban train tracks respectively called after the Central and Western Railways. The suburban trains of Mumbai are called 'local' trains. If you are on the Central Railway, get down at Kanjurmarg or Vikhroli and take an auto to IIT. The auto will take around Rs. 10 - 15. To board any of the buses, you'll have to walk slightly till a bus stop on the main L.B.S.Road and take any Andheri/Borivali bound bus. The fare is around Rs. 3. If you are coming from the Western Railways, get down at Andheri and take any of the buses going to Mulund from the eastern side of the railway station. The fare would be roughly Rs. 6. Using Eudora Internet Mail Server

I configured EIMS on my box to handle outgoing mail - it seemed a good idea, saving me a bit of grief on outgoing mail. However, the log showed me within a day or two that the server was apparently being used to relay mail for others, although I had checked off the boxes that should have restricted sending mail to known IDs - in fact, only this one. Needless to say I have discontinued using it. Can anyone guide me about correctly configuring SMTP? -- Vickram

Single User Mode

Hi all Regarding the discussion on the saftey if one can enter LINUX by switching into single user mode at the boot prompt one solution that I can think of is to comment the line specifying the single user mode in the /etc/inittab file [ l1:1:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 1 ]. Then the system will boot but the system can't be started correctely in the single user mode not only @ the boot prompt but even otherwise. Only the magic buttons CTRL + ALT + DEL works if not diabled. Inorder to switch into the Single user mode then one with the rootly powers has to uncomment the line and then ask the init process to re-examine the /etc/inittab file once again by typing "init q".
