Setting up home network -- help needed

Hi people, I have a two PCs & am planning to setup a home network. Those who have done this thing before, can you please give be pointers to required resources etc ? Basically the config wud be: the GNU/Linux machine connected to Internet (via cable), running firewall/proxy/ web server etc; and a Windows machine running browser, chat etc apps (connecting through GNU/Linux machine) I'm looking for info about following : 1. Hardware reqd(cables/ eth cards etc), good brands of diff components, approx costs & reliable vendors in MUMBAI (of course retail vendors) 2. Software reqd (i think i have most -- already have an running RHL9 box) 3. docs/tutorials/guides/howtos/websites blah blah ... vsftp problem

hello everyone, i m am planning to host ftp server . i m using vsftp , i have my shared directory at /var/ftp/pub/songs. This songs dir is nothin but a sym link to a songs dir on my vfat partition. Problem is : while accessing the songs dir , i get this error "550 connot change directoy". But , if i login using username and password of a user that has an account on the system - everything works fine. I have tried changing access parameters but nothin seems to work. currently the songs dir on my vfat has following access parameters: owner root RWX group root RX other RX. pls help me out of this. thanx. - Mrudul.

Hi, I would like to do the Redhat-8.0 installation remotely(since the machine don't have CDROM) I have done several Redhat-7.x remote installations using NFS method. I created "bootnet.img " # dd if=/mnt/cdrom/images/bootnet.img of=/dev/fd0 bs=512 When i boot machine from this floppy the installation stops showing "The Second stage of install which you have selected does not match the boot disk your using..." I booted from the rescue disk, unmounted the home partition, and using the parted program on the HD, shrank that partition. Now I'll be able to load another distro on the comp and resize either whenever I wish to. Just posted this since it might be useful to others too. Utility like "Postmaster" in Linux

Hi All, Do we have any utility/software in Linux which works like Postmaster in Windows. i.e. the software should be able to take a dump of all the incoming mails and then distribute them locally. All the e-mail accounts in the n/w would be configured in this software. hi i am a newbie. i installed kernel 2.6 on my RH9 m/c by compiling it from the source code given with LIFY. and instuctions in DIGIT. As far as i know every thing worked fine and installation was over and after restart i also got options for selection of the kernel with which i wanna boot. but if i boot from new kernel it shows uncopression is ok but it gets hunged over there only. can u pls tell me where i can find my bootlog so that i can trace the prob. also i have heard and also seen that linux by default considers my IDE as IDE-33 instead of IDE-133. pls tell me where i can edit to make it IDE-133 by default. i am using GRUB as my Boot Loader. thanx -- http://www.fastmail.fm - Sent 0.000002 seconds ago

Repartioning the HD

Hello, I have RH 8 installed on 10GBs and my home directory on 5GBs. The rest is taken up by windows. I want to repartition the drive so that I get space from my root and home partitions, leaving the windows partitions intact. I would prefer to use GNUParted, since it seems to be the easiest, but when i tried to resize the home partition, it says that the partition is in use, resize aborted. This happened even when I tried to do it while logged in as root. I tried to make a 'Parted' bootdisk, but could'nt manage to. Could anyone help me with this? I'd really like to try out and play with other distros too, and besides, I could use the extra distro to see if various progs and stuff work and i'm using them right(like trying to install a new window manager without messing up the primary system). Hi guyz, I stay at mumbai and my cable operator has given me a 64Kbps connection. I use a 24Online client to login. I have dual-booted my system with Red Hat Linux 9. When I contacted him about using his connection in Linux he said that I could use it either in Linux or Windows. So I searched around the net for help when I came upon this mailing list. I have searched the archives and found that I should be using 'linc'. I have downloaded the i386 RPM. But I dont know how to configure it or use it. I am a newbie :). So I was wondering if someone had instructions about using this utility. IOCTL related query

Hi ppl, I am facing a issue in IOCTL calls. IOCTL accepts user space data and gives it to kernel space, for a kernel module's execution. There appears to be a limit of 4096 bytes which can be copied from user space to kernel space in this IOCTL call. I would like to increase this limit of 4096 bytes. If anyone has faced this problem then kindly let me know how does one go about solving it. Awaiting help, Ashutosh.

Implementation of Unicode Porting For Marathi using Free Software in a Maharashtra Govt Department Background Over the decade and a half in the past, indian IT industry driven by Central govt efforts and lead by C-DAC, NCST , IIT kanpur and other instituions, has done a commendable job of introducing local scripts on DOS and Windows platforms etc. So long as the computers were confined to typing and printing , and that too largely within the confines of an office or an enterprise, the ad-hoc i.e. Non-standard approaches followed were infact an unexpected delight! However now that the demands for indian language working are for computing ( which includes searching and sorting) , for communication across networks and across platforms and across applications the non-standard approaches are a problem. On top of it , due to globalisation , there is need for multilingual documents i,e a document simultaneously containing many languages including chinese/japanese and european etc . The need to create webpages with such multilingual content with interactions leaves very little scope o f choice other than unicode. Thus the old font-encoded content will simply not do. However many governement organisations , with progressive bureacrats wanting to change over to this modern format are blocked in the path by the huge legacy of documents in older formats. Hence the capability to transform the old content to unicode is a crucial requrement. Those who want to convert to use of Opensource software technologies are posed witth this problem even more acutely.There is not even that little chance of using old font-encoded content as may be available for the Proporietory software users. This felt need lead us to the project of porting to unicode in Directorate of IT in Maharastra Govt. As is well known , the Govt of Maharashtra is not only a leading state in the field of Finance and industry but also in the field of IT and e-governance. What is the Significance of this project ? This project of converting to unicod is , as far as we know, for the first time that a government body has undertaken to convert to unicode and that too on Free Software. 1.The most important effect of this will be to open the possibility to shift to OpenSource software by the governments or any other corporate body who have accumulated a lot of content in old font-encoded formats. This does not prevent anyone to work with (more recent versions of) proprietory software like Microsoft Windows 2000 onwards. In fact it is a necessary requirement for many of them. 2.The other significant advantage will be that cost of working in indian languages will be reduced drastically. 3.Thirdly all the content(information and data) will be available in sortable and searchable global format which is what unicode enables. This will fulfill a long-term requirement of many departments of IT in many governemnts and Publicsector organsiations. What we have Accomplished Government of Maharastra , being particular about standards, chose the best option of standardising on the government organisation like C-DAC and workind with ISM software and ISFOC fonts. They used the Lotus Word Pro software and Microsoft Word ediors enabled with marathi by ISM and iPlugin of C-DAC. We have converted this Marathi content originally created in various ISFOCfonts of C-DAC ( using ISM and I-Plugin in several proprietory softwares) into unicode based, open type fonts which have been developed and made freely available by us We had to convert the legacy documents into new encoding , integrate the same with existing Database of the Govt.(DJMS =Document Journey management Sysytem) . We worked with one department to start with, i.e. Directorate of IT . We have also installed opesource software i.e OpenOffice 1.1 in some machines and demonstrated its use and trained some people so that all fresh work can begin in unicode now. Task of making the Database metafiles in unicode has also been completed . Underestimation: Initially the department estimated about 1000 files to be converted. However , we have had to deal with about 6700 files , identified and picked out the files that required convesions and converted about 2000 files. For actual work see the table above for work accomplished. File Types and fonts: We converted files with tables 9real painful) and without tables, from Lotus Word Processor, MSWord, Power Point, EXCEL etc and using DV-TT, DVB-TT and DVBW fonts. Font Developed : We have also developed gargi font. Initiated By Dr Nagarjun of Free Software Foundation(India) , right from the beginning (july 2002 ) our personnel developed and now we at indictrans maintain the font.During conversion we came across some deficienciesin the font. See our site for the more complete snapshots of performance of our fonts in all platforms and applications. We have also developed a Gujarati font padmaa (Prof Jitendra Shah's mother's name) We have translated the GUI messages In Marathi and Gujarati , (while modified IndLinux) Hindi . Other Localisations achieved: As linuxers know , we have come out with a live, bootable CD enabled in 4 languages, Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati with Debian GNU/Linux operating system and OpenOffice , Mozilla and other software. Hi all, I have Intel P4 which is dual boot i.e. windows 2003 and RH 9.0. While shutting down in win2k3 my m/c gets poweroff automatically but while in RH 9.0, I have to manually poweroff it after getting halt. Why is it so? any solution for the same? HOWTO-remote kernel debugging

hi, ***KERNEL DEBUGGING i am trying to remote step-by-step debug my kernel using gdb but havent got any pointers/tutorials. I have kernel 2.4.20-8 as HOST and kernel 2.6.1 as TARGET. Basically i know nothing about how to setting up the 2 systems for it. I want both the KGDB and KDB way for doing it. ***COMPILING MODULE IN 2.6.1 I recently compiled 2.6.1 from source and its working fine( except a few glitches ). I am unable to compile my modules. $gcc -Wall -O2 -D__KERNEL__ -DMODULE -I/usr/src/linux-2.6.1/include -c module_name.c i get errors on 'module.h' and many other files. I have the all minimal required tools( since i compiled 2.6.1 ) i.e. gcc and module-init-tools etc... All the above modules compiled well for 2.4.20-8. Even a simple module just having a printk() doesnt get compiled. InputMethod jar files in $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/ext/

Hi, Brahmi(http://brahmi.sf.net) is a multilingual java based editor(for indian languages). indicim.jar(developed by IBM) is a jar file which implements devnagiri input method. Now to run this editor brahmi all I need to do is java -jar Brahmi.jar and i am able to use hindi in it. Brahmi uses indicim.jar which has to be placed in $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/ext/ directory. All jar files placed in $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/ext/ are like extension libraries and is available to be used by any jar file on your machine. If a jar file is not in $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/ext/ then one must include it in CLASSPATH. Now the problem is when I remove indicim.jar from $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/ext and include it in class path it does not work(editor gives error while initiallizing hindi). I am unable to find the reason but i guess it is becuase of the fact that "all jar files in JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/ext/ are trusted while others are not completly trusted". Is it so? Is there any workaround. Actully what i am doing is to make a webpage where in a java applet you will have Brahmi Editor and anyone can visit that page and write anything in hindi and then may be mail it to somebody. It assumes that end-user is non-techie who dont know how to install fonts or how to copy indicim.jar file to $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/ext/. Everything else is working except for I have to place indicim.jar in $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/ext/ for this applet to work. Anybody having any ideas? -- Nilesh Bansal http://www.cse.iitb.ac.in/nilesh/

The problem is that the report does not have its pages numbered so I am unable to navigate through the report. How should I incorporate page numbering in this report. 2.6.1-"kernel panic init not found"

Hi, I installed the 2.6.1 kernel and having problems with initrd. My GRUB.CONF looks like this- <<<truncated>>> title Linux(2.6.1) root (hd0,4) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.1 ro root=LABEL=/ initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.1.img title RedHat Linux(2.4.20-8) root (hd0,4) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.20-8 ro root=LABEL=/ initrd /boot/initrd-2.4.20-8.img <<<truncated>>> 2.4.20-8 is the kernel installed by RH 9.0 and works fine. 2.6.1 is what i compiled from source and gives me problem with initrd saying - "kernel panic: no init found. try passing init= option to kernel" I understand that there is no problem with the kernel but with the initrd file. Linux is on /dev/hda5 with EXT3 fs and has NO BOOT partition. In 2.4.20-8 i can see EXT3 loading as a module while booting, but in 2.6 EXT3 loading fails with this - "mount: error 19 on loading ext3" _________________________________ When i remove the initrd line from GRUB.CONF i.e. - <<<truncated>>> title Linux(2.6.1) root (hd0,4) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.1 ro root=LABEL=/ title RedHat Linux(2.4.20-8) root (hd0,4) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.20-8 ro root=LABEL=/ initrd /boot/initrd-2.4.20-8.img <<<truncated>>> 2.6.1 loads completely without the module support...so i see that /dev/hda5 is mounted as EXT2 and not EXT3. Now, after 2.6.1 is loaded, i try this- #depmod which tells me that EXT3 requires JBD( which is also a MODULE and NOT BUILT-IN ). After manually 'insmod jbd.ko' and 'insmod ext3.ko', EXT3 module loads succesfully. dynamic linking problems

Hi Guys, I am facing a weird problem. I upgraded my glibc to 2.3.2 using rpm (Intel-Redhat-8). But just after upgrading glibc-utils (i.e. memusage, memusagestat, pcprofiledump, xtrace, libmemusage.so, libpcprofile.so), all programs using threads have started giving problems. Programs were working fine before upgrading this package. I can say this, because rpm started giving error immediately after this upgradation. All other glibc packages are already upgraded. Programs using threads are giving following error: anjuta: /lib/libpthread.so.0: version `GLIBC_2.3.2' not found (required by /lib/librt.so.1) rpm: /lib/libpthread.so.0: version `GLIBC_2.3.2' not found (required by /lib/librt.so.1) Is any of the programs listed in glibc-util used in resolving libraries version? Please help me if anybody has come across this problem before. spurios error

I tried working on this spurios error ( spurious 8259A interrupt: IRQ7 ) that kept creeping up when i booted. Nothing seems to help. I was also just told to ignore the error since it wasnt anything trivial. However, I am not too sure if this is related but, whenever I do major transfers to this box, it ends up hanging. This is a pretty new machine with tons of resources, and seeing it just crash without anything else in the logs to point elsewhere is something rather odd. Can help me diagnose this issue, I really cant have this go down on me on critical times... Thanks, Satish

rpm segfaulting after glibc upgrade

Hi guys, We have an Intel P-4 machine running Redhat 8. Since some packages don't get compiled without glibc 2.3, we decided to upgrade glibc from 2.2.93 to 2.3.2-11.9. We downloaded source rpm from redhat and compiled it on our machine. It created rpms for i386 architecture. We could upgrade glibc-common and glibc without any problem ( we took the backup of /lib before upgradation). But rpm gives segmentation fault now whenever we try to upgrade or install any package. All other programs seem to be working fine with new glibc. As it seems, rpm-4.1-1.06 is incompatible with glibc 2.3 and should be upgraded before upgrading glibc. But as we have already done the mistake, please suggest us how can we get rpm working, so that we can upgrade rpm before glibc. Though I cannot right now help you with the issue as I am still quite new to Linux, I can tell you that I have a Compaq presario 2184 with the same graphics card and it runs pretty well with Mandrake Linux 9.1. Hi, A collegue of mine on the ILUG Bom list alerted me to this thread. I am working with eSys in Singapore, and am "responsible" for the OS you see. The ePC range was launched in Oct 2002, and has undergone changes in positioning. At that time, as Prakash said, we were working with Via in producing a low-cost PC. That was the product brief my team had, and that is what we delivered. The idea was to reduce cost, reduce cost, reduce cost. As prices for components fell, and as we increased our volumes, it became easier to stay under the 10k barrier, but also provide some performance. The machines you see advertised are our "3rd generation", and feature more RAM and faster CPUs. We have convinced Intel that India has volume, and they have supported us with lower pricing. All hardware is Linux compatible, and we bundle a Debian-based internally-developed OS. It is Debian-based, so you can modify sources.list, apt-get, and overwrite our Logo ;-) It is Linux-based, so you can pop in a Mandrake, or PCQ9.0, and know that it will work. For those who are on the wrong list, yes, we also supply Windows drivers. Where can you buy this from? Your first contact should be Sunil Gera: +91 22 33915154. Because GNU/Linux systems are not written by MS guys who simply execute any file just because it pretended its content-type to be an audio file. In my opinion MS always had policy to make system more user-friendly(trying to auto-play a sound file for user) at cost of security(and executing exe instead). This bug and so many other bugs are so obvious(assuming MS has good developers!) that sometimes I feel they are kept on purpose, so that they can ask user to upgrade to their new OS/apps claiming to be MORE safe. mail scannners for qmail

Hi can any1 let me know some mailscanners in qmail. i hv chked with qmailscanner (it does not clean the msg) and qscan (cannot reattach the MIME part) and amavis takes a lot of resources.Also MailScanner it seems doesnt hv a qmail support. pls name some, other than these.C based scanners will be preferable. Try out Mandrake Linux. Hi, Need some advise if I'm on the wrong path. GOAL: Backup data (/home and /volx) , Re-format a GNU/Linux system and Re-install fresh from scratch. But I do not want to recreate the users and passwords... This is that I'm planning to do after restoring the /home folder. 1. Overwrite the following files from the old hard disk /etc/passwd /etc/shadow /etc/group /etc/gshadow 2. Reset ownership of files and folders since they may not match. Sample script: This could be addressed by running a for loop: -------------------- -------------------- -------------------- USERS=`awk -F: '{print $1}' /etc/passwd` for USER in $USERS ; do chown -R $USER /home/$USER chown $USER /var/spool/mail/$USER done -------------------- -------------------- -------------------- I have created a lot of groups folder in a folder called /vol1 and /vol2 -------------------- -------------------- -------------------- GROUPS=`awk -F: '{print $1}' /etc/group` for GROUP in $GROUPS ; do chown -R :$GROUP /vol?/$GROUP done -------------------- -------------------- -------------------- Any comments on this approach being good / bad or flawed? [OT] Diploma in Embedded Systems by CMC

Hi there, I read an advertisement by CMC and Thakur Institute of Career Advancement about a 3 month course in Embedded Systems. ( Fees, 40K ) The course is a Diploma in Embedded Systems and course contents are : 1. Foundation Module, comprising of Advanced C and its Data Structures 2. Programming of Microprocessors 3.Programming of Microcontrollers 4Digital Signal Processing 5. RTOS ( Two industry standard versions) 6. Project I have worked on these things during college( B.E. Electronics ) (except for RTOS). So i am looking at this from a certification point of view. currently i am working in VC++ on non-embedded systems and just dont want to really continue like this. any thoughts on this ? Let this go out for all those faint hearted or still full of doubts about the future of computing ever coming out of a monopoly...(´monosoft´)....I installed Linux on my home PC without any ¨technical help¨...just by downloading the software...and I am using it happily for 6 months now. And now I cannot think of ever using the earlier all pervasive OS, simply because this is so good. This led my to the next step- linux on my laptop. While on my PC, I still have the Windows 2000 as a dual boot option that I seldom use, my laptop is LInux-only. All thru the ¨windows¨ years I was so dependent on my ¨support¨ person, the local assembler for software re-installs also. Now with Linux, I can do everything myself. It is a great feeling. SO who says Linux is difficult? It may have been five years ago. Now with graphical systems in place and some incredible installers available..it is a breeze. I say this as a Desktop user. My needs are the common ones..I have some superb applications for those..in every way better than their windows equivalents....For all documents, I use Openoffice.org..for instant messaging I use Gaim..for playing DVD/VCD there is Xine..for audio there is XMMS...and Mozilla Firebird is a terrific browser, way out of the competition. SO what is left? Yes, I occassionally use a palmtop computer..and it syncs easily with J-pilot. No doubt now that linux will be the system of choice for desktops also...it is a matter of time. Why do Viruses not infect GNU/Linux PCs?

Hi I wanted to trigger a conversation here on why Viruses infect Windows PCs and not GNU/Linux systems, Dr. Nagarjuna explained the concept of a file in a posix file system is never set with execute permissions by default and that's why a GNU/Linux system cannot get infected with a Virus. The only way a program (virus) could infect the system would be is if a user actually saved an attachment to disk, then did a 'chmod 755 attachment' and then executed it by either double clicking it or ./attachment... Thus the user would have to be really dumb to infect his computer. ;-) Anyone care to comment or add to this? All thoughts are most welcome since I am keen on the education more than anything. Also I'm also wondering if I could be mistaken and that there are potentially problems / vulnerabilities on a GNU/Linux system... Regards Rishi
