Sending a file through SMS.

Hi. We have a unique requirement. We have some unix/linux servers which generate a very small status file every hour. We are then required to SMS this status to some people. Is there any way we can automate this process? The recipients cell is on the Reliance network. Basically, we need to sms a linux text file to a reliance number every hour. Any suggestions? Hello All, I was surfing the web for information on printer sharing and came across this gem below. All those who are new to printing in linux *must* read this page. It even gives tips to set up printers in command line. Another trick is that you can use the web based setup like going to address 'localhost:631' in command line too using the Lynx command line browser. Simply type 'lynx localhost:631' at the command prompt. Even those who have only one computer should definitely try these modes of setup. Its fun and a good learning experience. Hi, Is it a cultural issue? Do we need someone to tell us what to do? What are other reasons for not many Indians in the global FOSS scenery? Or are we shy to talk about what we are doing? See Suparna's example, most of us didn't know we had such an important contributor from India who could take Alan Cox's place at FOSS.IN and Alan Cox recognizing that we made the right choice? This means that if one were to tread the road not taken, one has to withstand the pressure from friends, family, relatives blah blah blah. What adds to this is the lack of knowledge about FOSS and such things among the common folks (read one's parents, relatives etc). 3) The whole atmosphere around is counterproductive to innovation and risk taking. Those who fail are not looked upon well by the Indian society. What matters to the society in India is success; the means does not matter. 3) We also are not trained to think in a creative manner. Succumbing to authority comes more natural to Indians rather than being free and think freely. Of course there are exceptions, but in general as a rule. Hi, Can we make it a practice|rule to NOT respond to threads that are marked Commercial, especially potentially inflammatory responses? We could have some kind of automated filter or something that blocks off replies to commercial threads. We could follow two simple rules: 1) Moderate Commercial tagged emails so that there is no spam coming in 2) Disallow replies to commercial threads. Any inquiries can be made off-list. Probably a bit more work for the mods but most off-the-line threads seem to spawn themselves from Commercial threads of late. Finally managed to get my hands on some P2 350s with 64 MB and 4 GB. CDROM thrown in too. (atleast in one of them). it has 98 for now, but planning to use a stripped down version of ubuntu. if there was ever such a thing. My basic (and probably only requirements are) 1) Wine 2) The two browsers. FF and IE. 3) a teeny .exe application that will be run over wine just like IE. Am pretty sure the above config should meet those needs, but is there any further stripping i need to do while installing the standard ubuntu 6.06 dapper drake to make it more lightweight? thanks abhi __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Google Earth problem.

Hello, I have recently moved to GNU/Linux, I recently installed Google Earth and iam unable to change the display to show up completely to my desktop resolution (1280x1024). It just shows up half way. Any ideas? Everything else working perfectly or i just do not know if anything is malfunctioning. Background: Newbie yet not so newbie user. Been exposed to linux since rh 5.3 but limited to just basic functionality and have moved to linux completely only now. If there is any more information you would like to have please let me know, onboard i810 intel 865 chipset, 2.4 GHz, 256 mb ram, swap around 700mb. Thank you in advance. Sachin G. Using another ``software" sorted it out ;-) i had heard about a hardware level hack for DVD players, i.e your standard DVD player is set to a default region(normally the one in which the DVD was manufactured), apparently the guys to supplied the player told us about this AND about the hack(which was essentially doing some soldering on the DVD logic board), and boom i had a region free DVD player. i don't know if we will be so lucky with Blue Ray DVD's, but luckly the alternative HD DVD is a little less restrictive. There's no harm in using the designer, but some advantages of manual coding are - (a) You have absolute control over code, (b) Well written code is self documenting, so you have a list of exactly what changes you have made to default properties of each widget and (c) This may not be important in many situations, but your own code tends to be smaller and neater than the generated code. I sometimes use the designer to do an initial layout and then copy and paste modified bits into my final code. This is especially helpful when you're still learning the relevant calls for various properties of widgets. Of course, doing it manually negates the advantage of having a separate and easily modifiable file for the GUI components, but I personally find the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. BTW, there isn't a problem with "manually it would be very hard to place stuff at proper positions" because Qt uses layouts like Java unlike say Visual Basic. So usually one doesn't position things using coordinates, just specifies the hierarchy. For example you're telling it that there is a dialog containing a frame containing a horizontal layout containing 3 buttons and an image. Actually compared to drawing out a dialog box in VB, using the Qt designer is a little more complicated because of this. But the initial complexity pays some nice dividends for both the end-user and the programmer: automatic widget positioning and layout allows easy resolution-independence, simple resizable windows and ultimately convenient portability. P.S. I'm wondering if this thread isn't getting a bit too far off topic for the list. BTW, comp.lang.python is a very useful resource for this sort of stuff. You no longer use "import qt" The library has been split functionally and you typically use something like "from PyQt4 import QtCore, QtGui" There are many other differences from previous versions and when I switched directly from 2.13 to 4.0 I got quite a shock - all older programs need significant work to be fixed. Since you're starting from scratch, make sure that you use documentation or books that are up-to-date and refer to Qt 4.x, otherwise you're going to get very confused. Problem installing mysql on RHEL 4

I am trying to install MySQL-server-4.0.16-0 on RHEL 4 but am getting the error shown below. I also tried again downloading and installing but same problem. MySQL-client-4.0.16-0 is also installed. Dear List, Do any of you use Sify Broadband Connection on Linux RHES 4?If anybody is using can you tell me how do u use it? I ve got the connection from local cable operator who has given me one .exe which when installed creates one icon on desktop and when opened that application need to mention username and password to connect to the internet. The only tragic part was that you HAD to run it as root AARG !!! A pity the authors never bothered studying SUID, SGID and the concept of running a service as a user with a /bin/false shell. I want to know if imap is used by all popular email servers. I will need to send emails to gmail, yahoo, msn (unfortunately) and rediffmail. may be sify also but that's not sure. so when I write my program in python and asuming it is running on gnu/linux, should I program for imap given the above email servers? also do let me know what else will I need to have on my linux box, msmtp? or any thing else? Home Icon starts XMMS

Hi all, Until a few days ago, clicking on the Home icon on the desktop opened the home directory. Don't know what happened but now clicking on it launches XMMS player. If I right click on Home icon and choose Properties to associate application and without making any changes just close it, then it opens XMMS and some 2 secs later it opens the home directory? Can anyone advise with fixing a problemon my linux mailserver. a tech came in to change internet access from cable to dsl. he altered the config and the local mail is not delivered to user mailboxes.it is ina the mailque with destination address which are wrong n are not sent out for eg local mail which should come to use mailbox is addressed to use(a)localhost.domain.com. can anyone advise a remedy?

Before booting client work station have you tried fetching boot image using tftp client? Dear all, How does one change the boot.ini on a computer? The problem is this: The machine had Windows XP running originally with Ubuntu Dapper Drake running on a partition. So a user has to choose the OS from the Grub menu. Now after some boot files in XP got corrupted, the computer refused to boot. The technician did a back-up installation of XP and now the machine works okay GRUB, Ubuntu and all. According to the engineer this is a usual problem with XP. He has advised editing boot.ini to make Linux the default OS but he warned that it can be done only once. Also that if Linux is made default Windows XP cannot be opened, etc. So how does one configure boot.ini so that the computer begins working even with the XP files corrupted, etc. The person who owns the computer wants both Windows XP and Linux on one machine for the near future. Maybe make GRUB run on Ubuntu OS instead of Windows XP at present. Pardon if I sound like verbally challenged!!!! Shiv Kumar

[OT] Anyone bought Class 2 Digital Certificate from MTNL Trust Line?

I have been trying to purchase a Class 2 Digital Certificate from MTNL Trust Line (http://mtnltrustline.com/products/online.htm) but no success. In the evening hours webra.mntltrustline.com seems to be offline and during daytime I get to the agreement page, I accept the agreement but then get time outs. Problem is without an online pre-registration number one cannot send the paper form to MTNL. The help line numbers (toll and tool free) are busy whenever I call in. Has anyone bought Class 2 Digital Certificate from MTNL Trust Line? If so, pls. let us know. TIA, -- akk

The easiest solution - Use GRUB to boot both Ubuntu and WinXP (/dev/hda is your IDE hard disk and /dev/hda2 is the root/boot partition of your Ubuntu install). 1. Boot Ubuntu Live from the CD. 2. Mount the root/boot partition e.g. on /mnt/hda 3. sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/hda /dev/hda 4. Hi, My Pentium 4 system is officially declared dead. I wish to replace it with a Core 2 Duo system. I wanted to know which motherboards are compatible with Linux. I would like to go in for a genuine Intel motherboard. The processor I am thinking of is Intel Core 2 Duo E6300/6400/6600/6700. I dont know which motherboard is most compatible with Linux ( FC5/6 ) specifically. The only Intel boards I could find were: - DG965RYCK - DG965WHMKR What would be the cost of the entire system with 512MB / 1GB of DDR2 RAM? All from Lamington Road. This motherboard has 1 IDE and 4 SATA ports. The IDE is powered by the Marvell PATA chipset which is not yet very well supported in the Linux world so when you connect a CD/DVD drive here, the installation doesn't find the installation CD/DVD. I've tried Knoppix 5.0.1, Ubuntu 6.06 and Suse 10.1 64-bit. The net suggests booting by giving the all-generic-ide option to the kernel but I have not been successful in getting it to recognize my DVD yet. It requires a kernel in which the generic ide driver is built-in rather than a module and I haven't checked if that's the case with the distros I've tried. I'll probably get a SATA harddisk so I can use the DVD on a SATA port using my SATA to PATA adapter and bypass this entire hassle. Hello All, I got this idea when I observed a client's SIFY connection. He wanted to have SIFY on his laptop so once the IP settings were done, there was a local LAN link of SIFY to download their dialer from SIFY's local network. Since the link was local LAN, it took about 2 seconds to download a 2 Mb file. Now with wireless I was wondering if we can have local wireless web servers in Mumbai where people can bring their laptops to hot spots and download linux softwares like latest distro ISOs, rpms, debs and tar gzipped files. The webserver will be simple tiny devices with hard disks, like the one in HBCSE. Their output can be given to a wireless AP. There will be no link with the internet so no wiring or ISP billing. The two devices are small in size and low on power consumption. They can be installed in coffee shops, book stalls, libraries etc. The devices can be provided free to the shops through institutional or corporate or collective funding with the condition that the shop will leave it on the whole day at his cost of electricity. The shop benefits from more visitors and good business like selling beverages and snacks, books etc. The devices will run independently and once in a few months the disks are updated with the latest distros and softwares through....say wireless itself. Just run a predefined package and wait till it says 'ok its done'. The advantage of this system is that local LAN speeds are much higher than internet so downloads will be much faster and one can simply log into the local web page and select the distro for download. Hey All , I was wondering if anyone managed to get the 7710's modem initialized with wvdial . I got the SE700i and the Nokia 6151 working . But the 7710 is different . I shows up an icon on the phone indicating that the modem is activated when the phone is connected to the dialer in m$ even without starting the dial out process . How do I replicate this in Linux . Hello All, The Acer 2428NWXCi comes with Linpus Linux pre-installed. On starting it up for the first time I was wondering what type of desktop I will be logged into and to my surprise, it booted up into a root command prompt. It would not recognize the 'startx' command. No wonder it has 'Limitted functionality' for those who expect a full fledged desktop environment. The os was replaced with Kubuntu 6.06 LTS and everything was detected smoothly. The wireless router is yet to arrive but the wireless network icon is present along with the ethernet so at least the device is properly installed. The grey area was the video player Kaffeine' Everytime I would try to play a vcd, it would go into an indefinite processing with no other function possible. I had to force the laptop to reboot twice on running kaffeine. There was not much choice available for kde in apt-get, so I installed VLC. It plays the vcd but sound is periodically clear and broken as it plays. So multimedia is a grey area for kubuntu 6.06 on Acer 2428. Kubuntu has a ready battery monitor icon in the system tray and it gives good indications of battery life, power mode and battery mode. The Acer 2428 is a good on system performance. It has a 14" wide screen. It runs pretty fast just like my P4 2.4 Ghz. + 256 Mb RAM. Battery life is 2.5 hrs+. It comes with a lovely carry bag that even lenovo does not give for its expensive laptops. I like the fact that Acer gives its best even to the lower end products. HDD is 60 Gb. Help for Xine installation

Hello all, I use RH9 and recently downloaded following files for Xine. xine-lib-1.1.2.tar.bz2 xine-ui-0.99.4.tar I made a directory and opened these files. At command prompt both as root and as user I gave following commands. ./configure make make install. After each of these commands the system does something as apparently the terminal shows the data being read, scrolling upwards. As per instructions on Xine site and other help file, it means I'm done with installation and I only need to type "xine" at prompt to start the program. Alas! I get the message no command found. Whats being wrong here? Frustrated, I got libxine1-1.1.3-061202.i686.rpm. It installed but no success with xine command. Reinstalling doesnt help as it says the rpm is already installed. Then I give rpm -e filename command as root or user. Now it says there's no such package to uninstall. Whats happening? Issues with .DOC files ..please help..!

I am using fedora core 5. I have my apache running perfectly. I have document root as /var/www/html There is a direcory "transfer" inside "/var/www/html" But when I put any *.doc file in "transfer", no one can access it. But they can access PDF files and all other files from the same directory , with same permissions set on all files.I tried settin chmod 755 on the files again. Still pdf, zip etc files go perfect , no luck with .doc files. I also upgraded to latest version of Apache too(2.2.2), still not working. I also tried lighttpd as suggested by a friend, same problem there. Also I am not able to upload .doc files as mail attachments in gmail/yahoo mail using Opera/Firefox/Konqueror. I can attach all other types of files though. So basically, its like .doc files are not going out of my box to anyone in any manner....I have disabled SElinux at boot itself. I have an old version of a windows database program for Homoeopathic medicine repertorisation. If you are curious take a look at http://www.hompath.com/ Now this is a windows only program and comes as an installable cd w/ a HASP hardware lock (which can either be parallel port or USB type). I checked out the alladin site at http://www.aladdin.com/support/hasp/hasp4/linuxdrv.asp for linux drivers and the only drivers they have are for Suse 8.x, 9.x and RedHat 8.x and 9.x according to the readme that came w/ the download. My question is has anybody been able to get these locks recognised under linux ? The problem is doubly compounded as I would like to run the program under wine. LFY carried an article in its July 2006 issue, offering detailed instructions of how an Airtel Sierra Card can be made to work with GNU/Linux. But, as things stand, many of the cards are unsupported. I tried a ZTE (made-in-China card) with Reliance on Ubuntu, and it just refused to work. Sierra cards are out of stock with Reliance here, I was told, though given alternate information earlier. Airtel says Sierra isn't available, and were offering a Vodafone datacard, which proudly says "Airtel Data card works on Windows 2000/XP/XP Tablet/XP Pro". If you know of any option (keeping in mind that I live in Goa, with limited hardware availability) please share your notes with me. I really need a datacard to get access to mobile computing, specially when travelling. I hv. 6 servers having 1 GB ram and using RH9. I hv. created 50 users averagely on each server. Also i hv. 200 thin clients. The users are accessing their logins created on server thru. X on thin clients. If any user login have some problem then i hv. to search the login on each servers. Can LDAP be useful in this case for common authenticaion ? If yes, suggest me some pointers , urls - JAGDISH.

Hi list, Check out this PDF on MTNL Mumbai's website: http://mtnlmumbai.in/tariff.pdf It lists all the tariff or all possible services that MTNL Mumbai provides. Now scroll down to page 16 ( TriBand ADSL Service ) and check out what is written below TriB T10 plan. It clearly says "Only for WinXP users". What kind of an ISP restricts a particular plan for a particular OS only? Got any clues why have written only for WinXP users? Is anyone using that plan with Linux? Hello All, I was browsing the rediff site and came across this AV multimedia player that is packed with features and has a 4 GB storage. http://shopping.rediff.com/shop/productdisplay.jsp?prrfnbr=10102619&source=… The cost of the above device is Rs. 4500/- approx. As we know, there is an ongoing project to develop a talking book for visually impaired people and Krish is actively involved in it. I recollect that he is looking for tiny motherboards with on-board CPU and Sound and RAM etc... to make the talking book. Since these boards are not very tiny, cost at least 7000/-, require a separate psu and will further require a cabinet and so on, I was wondering if the device or something similar, mentioned above in the link can be procured from the faceless manufacturers in China, who will simply provide a programmable platform to the brand maker. The software can then be developed for this platform and the result will be a battery operated, cute and sexy product that's hand-held and low cost too. What is the opinion of the experts? Greetings , I was wondering if three are any apps that manage bluetooth services provided by a remote device . Currently I can use all services like dial-up [via rfcomm and wvdial ] , sent & receive [ via obex] , hid [ via hidd ] . The issue is its kinda of hard to get someone else who isn't a techie to accept it . More over pairing is done using command line something that a normal cell phone user doesn't want to do . hey guys, Thanks for ur advises, but im stil facing the same issue. Let me give more details to all of u. 1. I am dual booting with Fedora Core 2 and Windows XP. 2. Fedora was working fine initially. When i was away, my parents used my PC, and they never used Fedora, they used Windows only. So you can say, Fedora was not used for around 2 months. 3. When I am back, I start Fedora and the booting stops with the following error message: modprobe: FATAL: Error inserting floppy (/lib/modules/2.6.5-1.358/kernel/driversblock/floppy.ko): Device or resource busy. IMP: the booting stops at the same point even if i try with CD-1 of fedora. btw..Harsh, Vivek, Rony, Siddhesh, thanks a lot for ur prompt replies. But i am quite new to this linux community and have limited knowledge of this OS. Hence, i do not know what to do when u say "you might need to reinstall your boot loader" . thanks again all. Kernel 2.6.10 weird message and system lockup

Hi, I know this might sound highly improbable but Linux has been locking up randomly. Heres details of my problem: Hardware: - P4 2.8C GHz 800MHz FSB Northwood processor with HT - 256MB Hynix RAM in single channel dynamic paging mode - Intel D865GBF motherboard - 120GB Samsung SATA Harddrive - 80GB Seagate PATA Harddrive - 20GB Seagate PATA Harddrive - Sony DVD writer ( new ) - Netgear WGR311v2 54Mbps wifi card - Dlink 538TX 10/100Mbps wired network card - ATI Radeon 7000 AGP card All hardware is about 2 years old except the one mentioned as new. Software: - Fedora Core 2 - Windows Server 2003 - Windows XP Symptoms: - The system has been locking up randomly after the addition of the Sony DVD writer. - One peculiar symptom that my system has been exhibiting with / without the writer is that the display doesn't come on at boot up. The monitor's LED just keeps on blinking. The keyboard doesn't respond at all and the harddisk LED just keeps on glowing as if it is accessing something. - Recently dmesg shows these suspicious entries: EXT3 FS on sda3, internal journal device-mapper: 4.3.0-ioctl (2004-09-30) initialised: dm-devel(a)redhat.com Adding 522104k swap on /dev/sda2. Priority:-1 extents:1 program scsi_unique_id is using a deprecated SCSI ioctl, please convert it to SG_IO program scsi_unique_id is using a deprecated SCSI ioctl, please convert it to SG_IO .... ( 10 msgs repeatedly. No where else are these messages repeated ). I understand the the swap part but why is it complaining of deprecated API? As I understand its seeing my SATA HD was a SCSI HD. But I've been using this harddisk for a while now and I haven't seen these messages appear - ever! :( - I've seen only 1 kernel panic and it was related to some SCSI function. I dont have the exact message but thats all I remember! Troubleshooting: - For the first problem, I've observed that after disconnecting the writer, the system is stable for a few hours now. But can't say with certainty if it will remain so. Will continue to test. - I've tried removing all component from the system and keeping the bare necessities i.e. just the keyboard, monitor, RAM, processor. The system still exhibits symptom No.2 though randomly. This problem has been occurring on and off. Initially I thought it might be due to loose contacts, dust etc... Yet even after cleaning the system and securing all components properly, the problem persists. So I'm inclined to think that the new hardware has nothing to do with the problem. - I've also replaced the harddisk cables just incase but to no avail. Rather the system works better / stabler with the old ones in place. - I have only tried troubleshooting on Linux. I have to yet boot into Windows and see if the same problems occur. In my opinion this can't be software specific bug which is causing the lockups. I am stumpted on problem No.1 Any inputs would be appreciated. Bye! :) -- Dinesh A. Joshi

And why don't I get this when I open Opera, Firefox or IE on a Windows machine? The charity head just needs a few viruses and trojans to understand that his 90m pounds are more safe under Linux and open source means opening the source code, not the compiled code that makes the OS software. problem with sound server

hello, i have debian 3.0 installed on my AMD 2600+ system. i'm using the alsa sound server, and have the nvidia-nforce2 soundcard. i'm getting the following problem with my sound server. when i try to run any music using either xmms or amarok, the system kinda hangs for a few seconds. i say "kinda" because the sound keeps on playing, but nothing else works for quite some time. i cant cycle between windows, can't open new applications. the only thing i can do is to use the amarok global shortcut to stop the current song, which stops after about a min or so, and then the system starts functioning properly. logging off or even restarting the m/c doesn't help. googling suggested that only one application can use the sound system at a time, so i should disable the sound server usage in KDE (for notifications, kalarm, etc), but that didn't help. and neither did the other suggestion, which was to use alsaconf to reconfigure the sound server. thanks for the help in advance :) -- warm regards, Pradnyesh Sawant -- A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle --Anon

FACT : At the end of the day, a corporation's primary goal is to make money and take care of their self interest. In their spare time/expense they would probably want to do charity/social work(for various reasons). Thus Novell by default can do what it wants under the prescribed laws. The only way this can change is if a majority stock holder(by the way i don't who owns how much of Novell, but that data can be got from the U.S - S.E.C) decides a motion to oppose a company decision and gets enough share holder votes with him. Yes, the Novell ``user" does not and CAN NOT decide, its the share holders CAN, and if and only if they have a majority. If they don't, then whatever was done is done. If users are unhappy with the company policy, they can certainly complain(about a major business decision) but that is effective only if they have enough numbers to impact Novell's revenue. Even if that does happen, its all on the company business guys to see where ``more revenue" comes from and thus take a decision. Its about where the $$$ and the more $$$ comes from. So if the more $$$ is coming from M$ . . . need i say more. Also, if one play's with corporate fire, one must be ready to get burnt. Let me make one thing very clear. i don't oppose all commercial organisations. But it is very naive on anyone's part to think that all of them would be selfless in terms of protecting value systems, integrity and freedom at the cost of profits. Moreover if a person is using some free(as in freedom) software(partially/wholly developed by a commercial organisation), that organisation takes a decision which the customer is not happy with, and he/she doesn't have shareholder clout - there's really little to do in terms of changing that company's policy. What one can do is, STOP using that software and use alternatives. If there are components that are unavailable then use what is available and develop what is not. Is it difficult: YES, Is it going to be a path of pain: YES, Is it even possible: YES!!! The GNU project set out to do that and succeeded and getting most of the stuff needed, and over a period of time other people(Linus, etc etc etc.) and communities(BSD, ASF etc etc etc.) also contributed and at the end of the day, a working system did emerge. i think that says it all. It's Stallman and the printer all over again. Stallman wasn't a Xerox majority share holder and his efforts in getting the driver source code did not bear fruit, so he did what had to be done. hello, can someone kindly help me with connecting to the "tata indicom" broadband connection using ubuntu 6.06? i know how to connect to the Internet using dialup (with modem), and also direct connection (even through proxy). but am stumped about the "tata indicom" connection; especially coz i dont have a modem, and still have to give a login username/password to connect. so i can't use dialup, nor direct connection. thanks for the help in advance :) -- warm regards, Pradnyesh Sawant -- If you are going through hell, keep going --Anon

FC6 Display Problem

Dear Friends After installing FC6 on my Athlon 1800+ machine, with SiS VGA ('lspci' detects Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 661/741/760/761 PCI/AGP VGA Display Adapter), and the monitor being LG Flatron E700S, the X was problemsome in the sense that a lot of black border was getting there on the console on all the four sides. I tried to fix it in FC6, but it was showing only generic 'CRT' display and an outlandish screen resolution. The way out was a bit stupid. I just copied the 'xorg.conf' from the SuSE 10 installation, without the file section obviously, and pasted it in the '/etc/X11' directory. And, really to my surprise, now everything X started working nice in FC6. But, as expected, there are problems: when i want to log out from X, at times it works and at times it hangs. Is there a not so stupid way out from this X fix in FC6? Till i am in X, FC6 is really working nice, and i need it particularly for its Bangla support, that is the best among the distributions i know, so i need to keep this installation. If you could please forward the link of this story that would be most appreciated. One complaint however, you mention the terms ``Linux Operating Systems", ``Linux Ubuntu Dapper Drake" and ``General Public Licence Linux OS" would it not be fair on your part to also mention GNU, ASF, BSD and other communities without whom you cannot call that entity an operating system. Freespire 1.0 Installation Report.

Hello All, The client who was given Mandriva 2006 yesterday is having the same problems in thunderbird that I was facing when I had 2006 installed in my system. It goes dead slow almost as if it hangs and the client has been giving me desperate calls. So I decided to install a new OS. I was sifting through my cd collection and found 'freespire 1.0' in the 'PCWorld 2006' DVD. I tried it out on my system before I do it at the client's place. It is a single cd iso and is a live + install version. Freespire 1.0 is a debian based system but please note that it is personalized to some extent and is not a look alike to debian or ubuntu. It also contains a little dose of non-libre packages like flash player and the windows codecs and mp3 player etc. all pre-loaded. But the best part of this distro is is is fully self contained with no extra download necessary and yet its not very heavy on the hardware. It is multimedia ready except for a dvd player. It has the latest firefox and thunderbird 1.5 versions so no updating or installation required. It uses terms like My Documents and My Computer and that makes it ideal for windows to linux migration. Another feature of this distro is that it is a live + install distro and installation time is very short. In the live as well as install option, after the preliminary desktop appears, it gives a set of options to be set, like display resolution, refresh rate, gamma, sound etc and that is a very good feature. Its desktop looks very sexy compared to other distros. A note of caution. Freespire does not recognise other linux distros installed so it will boot with only its own and windows options. New linux users who are already using another linux distro are advised not to install freespire, unless they have some knowledge of mounting partitions and editing grub menu files. For only windows users there will be no problem with dual boot. After installation I was unable to boot into my existing Kubuntu 6.06. Even the rescue option in the kubuntu cd did not work. Although I mounted my partition and did a chroot, it could not do a grub-install. So I mounted the partition and added lines from Kubuntu's boot menu into freespire's boot menu. Still Kubuntu would not boot. When it could boot into kubuntu single user option, I found that it did not have the 'savedefault' line. Therefore the line was Hashed in the main boot option. Then kubuntu booted properly and I did a grub-install to restore its grub. The freespire's lines were then added to it and now I can boot into all distros. Another important point to note is that during manual hdd install it only allows you to select an existing partition, it does not allow you to create a new one in free space or delete a partition. So you will have to do it manually before you install freespire. That can be done by first booting live and then rebooting again to install. Fdisk is available in the system. I was able to play a vcd and sample .oog files on the music player. Firefox already had flash built-in so I could play on-line videos too ( from reuters.com site ). There is a package manager called CNR which requires a free subscription. It asks for an email address and password. Please don't put your email password there. You leave it blank and create a separate password later in the next screens. However, I found later that apt-get works in command line and requires no log-in. Its repos are already in the list. Thunderbird does not use its default .thunderbird directory. It uses .lmail and one simply has to open .thunderbird and copy all its contents into the .lmail directory. The grub menu uses a peculiar format for root=/dev/hdax. It uses root=/dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/partx So overall this distro is great for windows to linux users as it saves a lot of time in getting latest packages and codecs. Its only a little different compared to other debian distros, yet its debian and I hope to get a good screen resol at the client's place. Regards, Rony. Linux on Intel 845 GLVA

Hello All, I was looking forward towards installing a debian based distro for my client who uses Mandrake 10.1 on a Celeron 2 Ghz. and Intel 845 glva mobo and Intel ethernet card. However to my surprise, neither Ubuntu 5.10 live nor kubuntu 6.06 live+install gave a screen resolution of more than 640 x 480 in spite of the xorg.conf having entries for 1024 x 768 and 800 x 600. So I installed Mandriva 2006 on his system and it worked out of the box with no driver or extra installation needed. Even the HP 690 printer was auto detected and configured during installation itself. Those who intend to install this distro need to keep one thing in mind that after the install configuration is done, it will show up as a list containing all the hardware like mouse, printer, video, sound, network etc before it actually does the installation. This is not just a list, it is a configurable list where the devices can be configured manually and it will be needed if you want to make changes just before install. For eg. Ethernet from dhcp to static, boot loader from lilo :P to grub, video system resolution and such tweaks. After installation, It has a very good package manager that can search for repository mirrors and lets you add from a big list of servers in different regions. In Ubuntu , you will find a config file.. /etc/ppp/pppoe.conf In this file, there is an option called "Usepeerdns" Just set the value value to "no". Should do it. Overriding pppoe DNS servers

Hi. I am usig Ubuntu 6.06. I connect to my local ISP using DSL. I set up the connection using 'ppoeconf'. Upon connection, the pppd daemon automatically(?) downloads the list of dns servers. However, the list of servers it downloads are not very good. I tried to stop this behavior by saying 'No' in the appropriate dialog of 'pppoeconf', but that did not help. The /etc/resolv.conf file keeps getting updated with the list at regular intervals. I want to override this behavior, and provide my own list of DNS servers. How can I do this? Just create a volume group consisting of (/dev/hda, /dev/hdb, /dev/hdc, etc.. or /dev/hda1, /dev/hdb2, etc..) and then create logical volumes out of the volume group. Maybe you can have a single logical volume for the whole group. I hope I understood your problem correctly. Disk sharing over network.

Hi All, I want to have a storage server and i have a chunk of computers with p4, 1gb ram lying around. What i plan to have is that when users see a directory called Data it should be a combination of hostA, HostB, HostC.... harddisk. Lets say we start filling up one guy. When one is filled up it should move on to second disk and so on without the users knowing it. I can use a LVM, or mount nfs but i want something which does exactly what i said above. However, for a Off-topic discussion, they would be much better. 3. The Meetings Official meets, are usually monthly. They can be once in two weeks too. The purpose of Monthly meetings should be talks related to and about GNU/Linux. However, it is also important to spread awareness of what the GNU project is all about and how GNU/Linux has been instrumental in achieving the aim of the GNU project prior to its kernel development (HURD). The GLUG / LUG must arrange to organize a seminar for a very specific target audience. This target audience can usually be students, who are actually interested in _Freedom_ software. They could also be IT managers in the industry. This, would actually require co-operation and help of the existing GLUG / LUG members and the receiving party. The meeting can last for 2 hours, at max, and preferably conducted on holidays or weekends. 4. BoF Meetings This isn't the most important part, but nevertheless, an element in building strong relations among fellow members. It helps one to understand the other's expertise in a particular field. Apart from that, it's also a leisure time for many. 5. Linux Distribution (GNU/Linux) CD's and DVD collection A GLUG / LUG should encourage members to share information about the CD's / DVD's of Linux Distributions (GNU/Linux) they possess. This is again, in the true spirit of freedom, to distribute copies without the restrictions of proprietary licenses. 6. How-to Support Sure, there's a lot on the internet, one may claim. But is it really easy to find what is required? Yes, it is. There are books and podcasts. You should know how to search using a search engine.However, How-to support should include specific cases. It should treat local cases and solve those problems. However one important aspect of this communication, is one cannot interact, therefore, that should be provided in the _mailing list_ and IRC channels. For example, MTNL Triband is available in Delhi and Mumbai. Not all over the world. There may be a general how-to to setup a ADSL connection, but that may not always help. Therefore, the GLUG / LUG should maintain specific HOW-TO, pertaining to local solutions. 7. Careers and Jobs in GNU/Linux It isn't a *free* world at all. Or is it? The GLUG / LUG must have postings about jobs and careers related to tasks in GNU/Linux on their website. 8. Newbie treatment and trolls "Don't you know google.com?". "Doesn't seem to know a website that has one big white box, and has atleast 26 letter to punch in?" Newbie are fools? May be they are. But that doesn't mean, you were never one of them. The point that is emphasized on is that Newbie's should _NOT_ be flamed / criticized straight away. Redirect them to a FAQ on the GLUG's / LUG's website and let them know how and what questions they are supposed to ask. The power of command line that you may be happy with, is not of any importance to a Windows user. He hasn't used it. In fact, there is no need for him to use it. Trolls / Flames cannot be eliminated. They can only be minimized. They aren't all that bad. The views expressed above are based purely on what I have been observing. I am not an expert at forming a GLUG / LUG, but essentially, the members with the surrounding 7 components is what, I think would be required for a successful GLUG / LUG. Apart from this, I haven't mentioned a component that drives a lot of things. Funds! I am not completely aware of what funds would flow for a GLUG / LUG and where they would come from and what are the legal restrictions. Linux installation problem on IBM Thinkpad

I tried to install RHEL 4 on IBM Thinkpad R40e, but system hangs after probing devices and before starting the installation. I also tried RH 9 but it also hangs before starting installation. Same thing happened with Suse 10. I was successful in installing Mandrake 9.1 but the keyboard doesn't work. Please help me in installing RHEL 4 on laptop. Thanks in advance. I am experiencing a similar problem reported by another member. For a couple of days earlier this week I not receive *any* messagefrom this list. Now, a few messages are trickling into my mail box - out of sequence e.g. original post missing w/ random posts to a thread. I do have a Yahoo! filter to forward this list messages to my inbox. Are there others experiencing this problem? List Admins - any idea why only random messages are being sent to me? TIA, Arun Khan

OS solution for bandwidth usage calculation?

Here is an application. Web cam is in operation (either IP cam or non IP cam). Subscribers can login and view the display. However, they need to pay by the minutes for usage. Are there ready FOSS solutions that do the same? Can it be an IP based camera which is serving pages directly to subscribers who log in via a remotely hosted site? [OT] Triban IP Alert.

Hello All, The new Triband adsl modems provided by MTNL have separate ip addresses for the ethernet and usb interfaces unlike the D-link one which has 192.168.1.1 alloted to both. The MTNL ones have 192.168.1.1 for eth and 192.168.1.2 for the usb one. Therefore if you are setting up the pc's ethernet card then the earlier 192.168.1.2 will not work and yesterday I found it out the hard way. I was unable to even ping the modem. Only when a live cd was put in, it was found to take the ip of 3 instead of 2. After the system's ip was changed to 3, all went fine.
