However, there's something called as Unlimited Free Uploads. So that means that they are only going to consider the surfing of sites and downloads of software from download.com (or any other site...) and not consider the attachements that are uploaded.... Has anyone gone for this plan...Please let me know.... Also, there are certain things in Triband Shifting charges - Rs. 100 (what's this?) hi, just installed debian testing on one the machines on LAN. i want to remote login to that machine using its GDM. i have never done this before. the documentation i found on tldp starts with editing the /etc/X11/xdm/Xaccess file. but that file is not present on the system. i tried looking in other files of that dir. but no help. so how does one go about doing remote X logins by XDMCP? thanks in advanced. -- " The hardest thing in life is to do nothing - 'cause you never know when your finished..."

So now I have no alternative, to go the Screw you, you can KMA 6 months and a registered letter for corrected bills down the line, I haven't heard from them. I have switched to a Orange Prepaid and am paranoid of telephone companies. I have recuperated (why ???) and signed up now for MTNL triband *) after a fellow idiot is giving it rave reviews before getting the first bill. Gishu

I am planning to buy AMD64 based PC within a week. Can I install linux on it using my ubuntu 5.04 CD (386 port) instead of AMD64 port version? Dear All, I am running Red Hat Fedora Core 4. We have a pop server in which aliases is enabled, Using fetchmail we download mails from single real account say "general" and distribute to users locally. I use Postfix as my MTA with default config. My fetchmail config below poll xyz.com proto pop3 localdomains test.linux.com no dns envelope "Delivered-To" user "general" password "xxx" is * here it works fine, but when I mark copy to other users, they get multiple copies of mail. I got my MTNL bill a few days ago. For the NU Plan the charge is Rs. 590 (unlimited usage 00:00->08:00) plus additional usage charge to the tune of Rs. 6304! My prime time (08:00->00:00) Internet usage pattern has not changed since I got the DSL service in Apr/05. I suspect there is some billing snafu whereby downloads during 00:00->08:00 have also been counted. Another friend of mine, with the NU plan, got a Rs. 14,000 additional DSL usage charge! Both of us are serviced by the Khar(W) CO. I have already complained to MTNL in writing but have not heard from them yet. Anyone on this list experiencing the same? Were you able to resolve it with MTNL? If not, perhaps we can complain to them collectively - pls. contact me off list. The original players retain the last mile network, in effect being a major stumbling block for other telecos and competing with private companies using public money. The TRAI and telecom mandarins refuse to share their last mile circuits with other service providers and have made it illegal to provide any telecom service without paying licence fees. [OT] What is keeping us from getting broadband?

Hi, I was just talking with a Swedish friend and I wondered what is keeping India from going broadband? I mean people in foreign countries commonly have 2Mbit connections without download restrictions. My friend is currently studying in a university where he gets to share a 100Mbps 24x7 connection amongst 3 people and the authorities don't care about the downloads, only the uploads :O And he says the fees are included in the university's fees. I personally have logged into his server and downloaded many things, just for fun ^^ and it feels great to download at those speeds from international mirrors! Forget about 100Mbps. A friend in Netherlands has a 8Mbps DSL connection. No restrictions what-so-ever. The cost is very reasonable. In Indian rupees it works out to 1200-1500 bucks. I am not saying that foreign countries are a haven for those who feel the need for speed, rather I am simply saying that the conditions are much better than India. This is a big fact that the internet sucks in India and despite whatever measures our IT / Telecom minister(s) have taken to improve the situation, it hasn't made much of a difference. I still see MTNL DSL being overly priced. Yes, the 200MB / 400MB or whatever limit they put sucks. I can't see any *real* ISPs. Why is it so? Why is it so difficult for them to provide us with fast connectivity? Are the bandwidth prices so high that they cant afford to give us anything better? Are they just lazy? Are they just plain stupid? How are these ISPs "billed"? What are the costs they incurr? I think now TATA, Reliance and other Indian players own major underwater submarine cables, so they should be able to ease the congestion and provide super fast connectivity! What gives here? I read some where that TATA bought Tyco and Tyco's underwater submarine cables' _unlit_ capacity was some Terabits! Reliance purchased FLAG telecom. It too has a huge network and a huge capacity! WTF? India, as a *whole* uses some few hunderd Megabits of capacity and here we have terabits of capacity! Why are lagging behind then? I wan't some answers and I think you guys are best equipped to answer them. Are we really an IT super power? Or are we living a dream? -- Dinesh A. Joshi

MTNL triband

Friends, Sharing an observation regarding MTNL triband : During installation, the username (phone number) and password (CA number per phone bill) are supplied into the router and "saved" therein. Whenever switched on thereafter, the router must be automatically supplying the "saved" username and password to authenticate into the MTNL exchange/infra. The user is thus absolved of the need to submit username and password each time it is powered on. I use MTNL triband at home and at office. The MTNL exchanges are 2557xxxx and 2548xxxx respectively. A few weeks ago, my office connection stopped working. >From the symptoms and some investigations, I suspected the MTNL/Dlink502/ADSL router in the office is misbehaving. To confirm my doubts, I took the router from home to office; disconnected the suspect office router; reconnected the home router in the office; connection was working fine ! I logged my complaint on their helpdesk (dial 1504 from an MTNL line). followed up with the local MTNL office, and obtained a replacment for the defective MTNL ADSL router. MTNL triband

Has anyone been using the MTNL Night unlimited package? is there billing software working correctly? i have heard it doesnt. Their support service sucks.. bandwith seems decent. But they are pretty much deaf for a telephone company. I told them I wanted the NU package and they gave me AA package. I am either gonna change my plan.. or totally disconnect it.. So please do let me know if their billing software works correctly and doesnt charge for nightly usage. Satish

Hi, I have hosted one website in /domain/www.xyz.com/web i have created three 3 ftp users i.e., admin user1 user2 Home directory of admin is /domain/www.xyz.com/web Home directory of user1 is /domain/www.xyz.com/web/user1 Home directory of user2 is /domain/www.xyz.com/web/user2 Now the issue is admin should have all the rights on the /domain/www.xyz.com/web directory but I am unable to edit or delete files from /domain/www.xyz.com/web/user1 and /domain/www.xyz.com/web/user1 using admin FTP login I cant add user1 and user2 to admin group as user1 will be able to access user2 files Kindly provide me solution for this. Hi, I am Hon. working for a Leading NGO in Western Suburbs as IT Head. Recently we purchased a new pc of below mentioned Configuration: Intel P IV 3.0 Ghz 531 with EM64T (64 Bit Tech.) Intel 915G Original Mother Board 512 MB DDR RAM 400 Mhz 80 Gb SATA Hard Disk (Samsung ST380017AS) and rest of the things (Keyboard, Mouse M/Media Speakers Ect) I am trying to install Redhat Enterprise Linux 3.0 AS/WS on the same but my hard disk is not recognised during installation. It shows no hard disk found and asks for the SATA Driver Disketts. Even i tried to install Fedora Core 4 Provided with Digit Aug 05 Magzine. But it also does not recognise my Hard Disk. One of my friend told me that i have to use a distribution which supports 64 bit Technology. Can any one provide me the necessary Distribution of RHEL 3.0 AS/WS or Fedora Core 4 or Mandriva 10 and Driver disks required for the same. Hi list, I received a particular email from a certain company claiming to do research on "people who use linux". It's ok to do "research" but what got my attention was this particular line: >It would be grest if you could give us some time of your`s.We assure >you that you will not be told to buy anything ....it is just a pure >research for about an hour ...we will be giving you a gift for >attending this group. What "gift" ? "not be told to buy anything" ? Hmm...that seems quite suspicious. From when did *anyone*, in Mumbai, become so benevolent to give out free gifts? I used to receive several telephone calls where I would be invited to a "meeting" for an "hour" at the end of which we would get "gifts". I never attended one but I know they are scams or stupid marketing gimmicks. Apart from that, there are several spelling mistakes, no professional tone and the email is quite sloppily drafted. Could these guys be genuine? or is it just a scam? Looking forward to hearing from the more "experienced" luggers :) Regards, Dinesh.

Usually the researcher comes to your office by prior appointment and gives u a fair idea of what he is researching. Even if u have to visit some place for the research u are visited first so that the researcher can ensure that ur profile fits their product target market etc. U will be asked to sign some nda or the other. In the abscence of the above it is most likely to be one of the MLM scams aka kudos, japan life, sherigar etc. etc. If u have not been to one of these do go. It will provide great insites into the pschology and logistics of scam organisers and victims. How perfectly sane and logical bean counters can part with lakhs for something as mundane as matresses is something u should not miss. Mouse Configuration in Fedora Core4

Hi, FC4 installed finally but not without hiccups. I will not mention some weird things that I bumped into during installation. Now I'm stuck with a detected mouse, which is non-operational. I see a pointer at the center of the screen but it won't move from there. I used the keyboard during the entire installation process. This mouse was detected by some other distros of Linux earlier so the H/w is ok. I tried /usr/bin/mouseconfig - Shutting down console mouse services fails. next I get an error message stating Failed to set line discipline .. As always, Help me !!! Thanks, Gishu Pillai

Importing OE6 mails into Evolution

Hi all, In my quest to shift entirely to Linux, I am facing some problems in getting somethings done. For example, I still use my OE 6 under XP. I am still using it because I have 2 yrs old mails which I need to refer to quite often. I want to import the old mails from OE 6 into Evolution and it only allows OE 4 mails in mbx format to be imported. Can anyone help me in this regard. I need this last thing to be done. Apart from this everything else is looking positive and once I have the old mails under Evolution, it might be bye-bye to Windoze...completely. Thanks rc

Hi, I'm back with some more A big thank you to Dinesh here. My wish to own an AMD machine has come true. (AMD Semp 2500+ with ASUS K8S-MX). Now 2 Linux distros have failed to install .. FC4 which came with this month's Chip DVD just keeps rebooting. I see the second line Reading initrd.... and kaboom Next it was Debian 3.1- Now here I get a weird error that failed to mount CDROM. I have used the same drive to install the same distro on another machine. It is booting from the CD but a modprobe command fails look like. In the end I was forced to put in Win2K and needless to say it installed fine (maybe I need more Linux installs under my belt) What's up with this ? Thanks, Gishu Pillai

[OT]A good Laptop

Hi all, I would like to go for a Laptop and my budget is not going to permit me to go in for Centrino based ones. It is around 35k. I think sometime back, the list was discussing about Acer Laptop model 3002. I would like to know about the performance of these. I have seen the Acer site and it says that the battery gives a backup time of around 1 hr. and that I think is too low. That apart, Last week when I was in Bangalore, I saw a few AMD 64 based Laptops of SAHARA being displayed. Is there anyone who is using any laptops from SAHARA. Hello All, I got myself an LG LSP350R (reliance) and tried to modprobe it using the 3 different commands but none of them seem to have a module suitable for the new lsp350r that uses a usb cable. The configure system in Mandrake 10.1 shows an LG usb modem but no modules installed. Anyone has successfully tried out this new phone using kppp? Just for the information of everyone, the cable available in the ...express shop did not work but a Cheetah brand cable costing only Rs. 300/- works fine. FWIW, V2 FW (20050530) is available for the DLink 502t modem/router used by MTNL TriBand ADSL service. http://www.dlink.co.in/dlink/drivers/support.asp# Click on "Firmware" and search for 502t in the list of products displayed and download the file. The file is in .rar format and you need MS Windows to apply the new firmware. The unpacked .exe is a Windows app that uploads the firmware embedded within it. As always, ensure the router and your PC are powered by a functional UPS - to avoid any problems in case of power loss. This version's web admin interacts well with Firefox unlike V1. It has VPN (and more ...) functionality although I have not checked them out yet. root login in vncserver

Hi, I have a vncserver running in my FC4 pc. I connect to this pc from another pc where i use Slax Kill-Bill live cd. I use vncviewer for that. But is there any way to restrict root login because when I login to the vncserver it doesnt ask for a username. It just asks for password that I had set through vncpasswd. Download speed less than upload speed

I took numerous speed tests on the internet and they show that my upload speed is almost double that of my download speed(35.5kbps). Is their anyway to tweak these settings so the come near equal. I use Arch Linux, unpatched kernel, i686 and cable net which advertises a speed of 64 kbps. -Nikhil

Hi, I need a *second* CPU for under 7-8K and I needed on some input on the current known 5 starred tried and tested - no hassle - setups. My personal preference is for an AMD + MSI combo. But I do not know of the specific models. This machine does not need to be the bling machine.. just normal DTP, spreadsheets, sandbox for web/networking apps, an occasional XP testbed machine etc. Debian should run and if possible detect everything in an hour with my molecular knowledge. All hardcore stuff goes on my machine "1". I do not want to buy something and then caned for buying "closed" hardware. So to put it simply I need a processor (anything decent enough) a motherboard (the two need to do well in tandem and not blow my roof off, no I want an AC h/w) 256 RAM (is what I'm thinking right now- manageable.) a cabinet should set me back by 1500 (exclusive of the 7-8K limit) I have an extra LAN card that I can use. Monitor and display switch operational. Input devices AOK. I have an extra CD drive. May go in for a DVD writer later (out of money) Response invited. Thread closes in 2 days. Game for flame too.. On the server i have a struct defined as: struct sendbuff { int count; char toprint[10000]; }; My objective is to pack this buffer across the n/w and recv it on the client. count is a simple counter which i am usign to keep track of the lost/unordered packets is any. USB freezes FC4 system

I have a Mercury Intel 810 motherboard. That it has a USB controller, I discovered only recently. However, whenever I plug in a USB pen drive when the system is booted up, the system completely freezes. Disconnecting the pen drive doesn't help, and I have to use the reset button. The device works fine if it's connected prior to boot up. However, if I then unmount it, and try to stick it in again, the system still freezes up. I tried recompiling the kernel, but since I dont know much, all I did was simply enable ALL the drivers in the USB section. The problem persists. Could anyone guide me to a solution? While messing around with assembly i printed the value of %esp when nothing is on the stack. It was 80. Does this mean that there are only 80 bytes on the stack. If yes then how does all the cmd line args and stuff fit in it. Squid problem

Hello, I am using squid v 2.5.STABLE8 (recompiled with x-forwarded-for patch) along with dansguardian v 2.8.0.3 on a FC2 box. Iptables dnat rules make sure that all port 80 and port 3128 requests are sent to port 8080. When I configure squid to enable access based on proxy_auth using /usr/lib/squid/pam_auth, I always get access denied... with the following line in the cache.log : 2005/08/25 11:51:06| aclAuthenticated: authentication not applicable on accelerated requests. Funny thing is -- if the client's browser settings are changed to use Proxy server on port 3128 instead of "automatically detect settings", then the browser pops up for username/password and accepts correct passwords to work just fine. But I was wanting to get this done when the browser hits on port 80 and not port 3128. Even when I try without Accel mode, I get access denied from squid, with the only difference being that instead of saying that the denied page was - lets say - "yahoo.com" -- it will say denied page was -- "/" I googled a bit and found that squid ver 3 (still under DEVEL) has an option to rebuild with "--enable-auth-on-accel" which will probably solve this problem. But i dont want to use v3 as it is still under DEVEL. I am now wondering what can be done about this ..... can someone help? Thanx in advance Vai

I guess if not then it just hangs or tries to connect indefinately. To buttress this fact further i would say that when i ssue an ifconfig the output shows Received by as a different value everytime (Increasing everytime) which i suppose indicates that the pc is indeed on the network. One question remains that even if i keep my default gateway address as blank then also my ifconfig shows two different address for eth0 which are 172.25.65.29 and Bcast as 172.25.65.31. i am not sure what this means!! any help would be appreciated. Hi All, I am trying to install Oracle 9i Standard edition on RHEL 4. While setting the shmmax value ( as root ) in /proc/sys/kernel to that specified in the Oracle documentation, I am facing a problem. When I edit the value in shmmax using vi editor and try saving it, it gives a message "E667 : Fsync failed." I am unable to edit this file. Can anyone help me out with this ? Regards, Gopi

Hello, I have one question about RHCE exam. RHEL comes with Postfix and Sendmail MTA. I am comfortable with Postfix and I would not like to waste my energy with Sendmail. In exam can I choose Postfix over Sendmail or I have to concentrate on both Postfix and Sendmail? Is there any RHCE forum out there? hi, i have following lines in bash. #!/bin/bash mount -t vfat /some/usb_devfs/device /mnt/usb cd /mnt/usb But somehow the 'cd' command behaves very strangely. if after cd /mnt/usb i put 'pwd' it shows '/mnt/usb' but, instead of 'pwd' if i put 'ls' it shows the listing of dir from which the script is executed. very strange. -- Life is complex. However, the motherboard recently went bad, but that, I think was more due to the lack of earthing in my place rather than has to do with motherboard... Hi there, This is Vihang a rookie linuxer... I believe that the real potential of linux system lies in its networking capability but somehow my home machine is not connecting to LAN i am using Red Hat 8.0 and my configuration is celeron 2 GHz, 128 mb ram , and a graphics card. i have installed the graphics card. A brief description about the problem is when i go to network configuration wizard my network card is detected properly which is Realtech (some number). Then in the next step i manually put my Static IP address given by my net connection provider i enter subnet mask and all the detail. After the wizard finishes i try accessing any website and it says website not found. i try pinging the some ip and it says network not reachable. Everythign is working fine on my Windows XP site. The interface eth0 is detected properly during the booting of the system. Not sure from where to start the troubleshooting. I tried searching on the net but no relevent information Any help would greatly be appreciated. Sify and Router Configuration

Hi, I know this really isint linux related, but couldnt think of a better place to ask. I have a netgrear wireless router which I want to configure to access sify. These are the steps I have taken: 1) Useing static ip address on router configuration page. 2) I have set the mac address on the router to correspond with the one they have bound to my account. Now the problem is that I still need to use the sify client to send my username and password. The client also automatically sends my MAC address. So depending on the connection I use( wireless or wired) a different MAC address is sent. Also currently its impossible for two computers to use the internet at the same time. What I need to figure out is a way for the Netgear router to send all this information to sify. India Now Host to Internet Root Server

[OT] Motherboard Repair

Hello All, I have a query related to my repair of a Mercury 810e mobo. It was my first serious attempt to repair a mobo after an earlier successfull case of a P4 mobo with swoolen caps. _System:_ P3 1.13 GHz., Mercury 810e mobo with on board sound and video. _Problem:_ The system would stop suddenly while working and the display would become blank with the monitor going into standby. It could be turned on again only by power off/on. Again the display would disappear after some minutes and the system would require restart again. Many a times the system would never start at all. A pci display card was tried out but after initial bootup, it became off again and never started. _Diagnosis:_ SMPS unit was swapped and found OK. RAM ok. On the mobo, there is a step down circuit that converts 5V input to 1.5V output for the bus gate circuitry. This 1.5V was missing whenever the mobo would not start. On some occasions, luckily the mobo would start and since I had no HDD with me, I used a live linux CD as the OS. Knoppix does not go beyond console so 'Cool Linux', a Russian/English distro was used. It gave a window display for a few minutes but then the system went off again. The 1.5V fires up on power on but after a few seconds to some or more minutes it shuts off. _Solutions Tried:_ The dc-dc converter chip 34063 replaced but no effect. The power caps were resoldered and the system came alive for a few minutes, then off. The vga connector pins were resoldered and the system ran for more than half an hour but went off. However now even cool linux does not go beyond console. When the problems start, the system does not start again till quite some time and a lot of fiddling. The cpu is cool. Any help from anyone experienced in this is most welcome. If someone can explain the concept behind power signals, thats welcome too. tcp throput v/s udp throput

Morning Fellas, Was working on some socket progs based on some performance test objectives we had in mind. The objective is to stress the TCPIP stack in the GnuLinux kernel and see the best numbers achiveable over the network. Am in a bit of a quandry here. We always were taught that the overheads of a tcp session were higher than that of UDP considering the ACK's and FIN's sent across for every packet over the n/w, while TCP guaranteed delivery....blah..blah and UDP didn't. Should i expect better throughput(Bytes/s) for TCP or UDP over a *Reliable* LAN and *Unreliable* WAN?. I will let you know what results i have achieved but i would like to know your perspective since thats more important. The tests are on my RHEL 3.0 box with the RH hacked 2.4.x kernel. I will post the connect/send/recv code to those interested. The throughput calculation code is same for both the TCP and UDP programs hence the calculations i am sure about. What do you think about it gurus???. Has anybody tried out SCTP???. hi, as i go on using emacs for coding, i go on exploring more and more about emacs features, but it also lots of pressure of remembering lots of keyboard sequences (atleast in intial phase). i was wondering, which method is prefered? how about, instead of doing C-<space>, i start using M-x set-mark (this is valid for all the commands)? but it invites hitting lots of keystrokes :( (i know the tab works). also this M-x method, what exactly its called? i mean i though of googling it for the nice tutorial, but what should i put as a search string? Hello All, I did some calculation on the r-connect schemes for internet. The Rs. 650 per month has unlimitted time and a data limit of 1 GB. While this looks attractive, it can be expensive for downloading CD isos. @ 14.5 Kbytes per second, 1 GB takes 68965.5 seconds to download. This means 1149.4 minutes. @ the standard daytime rate of 50 ps per minute, this becomes Rs. 574.7. @ 25 ps for usage after 10 pm, 1 GB would cost Rs. 287.3 to download and 2 GB would be Rs. 587/-. The minimum tarrif without CID for a fwp is Rs. 150/- only. Only disadvantage in standard tarrifs is that you don't get an smtp service. Hi there. I compiled the released Q3 Arena source (thank you, thank you Mr. John Carmack!) a couple of hours ago. However, I soon found out that somehow it ran well only if I fired up X in a resolution of 640x480. It just wouldn't get up to speed if I booted into the default resolution of 1024x768 (even though q3 itself ran in 640x480 mode). Is there a way I can start X in 640x480 mode without changing the global /etc/X11/xorg.conf file? My current routine constitutes changing that file, restarting X, playing Quake, and then changing the file back ... -- Sandy (http://360.yahoo.com/sandesh247) Better hope the life-inspector doesn't come around while you have your life in such a mess.

You could look for something known as Arctic Silver 5. But for overheating, you may want to look at the fan speeds of the processor as well and make sure its running at the correct speed. Try cleaning the fan. Arctic Silver 5, is very well known. I am not sure if you will get it here. But you do get other heat sink pastes.I had bought a small can/bottle of silica gel/heat sink paste compound a long time ago. Dont remember where. Satish

Once u configure the modem and ask it to update the settings, u need to rerun your dhclient unless u have configured the modem to dispense a static ip to your box.With dynamic ip i experienced something similiar. Since i had planned to use static ip anyway, i did not check further, and i cant see the link between the problem and dhcp. Maybe it's the routes. I am clueless about IEeek tho. rgds jtd

I had one of my clients install MTNL ADSL broadband 256kbps. It has been up for about 2 months. So far it is working very well and has had almost zero outages. It has worked far far better than i had expected and beats any of the private isps. The bandwidth varies between 220 and 224kbps. With occasional drops to 216kbps. The dns is sloow but not a problem with a local caching dns.The MTNL engineers were very enthusiastic and spent several hours learning how to set up the dlink adsl modem.Apparently dlink / mtnl dont train their people. Any one with any more experiences before we can recommend it to all. rgds jtd

On the positive side, during the aftermath of 26/7, my ADSL service was unaffected though my landline on the same wire pair was OOS for 7 days. If your clients can live with some outages then I guess it is a cost effective solution. If you have the luxury of a Linux server, then use bind, dhcpd on it rather than on the DSL modem. As for support, I got to know the linesman responsible for the neighborhood. Thru his chain of command I am able to get some support. I have found the engineers at Khar are quite knowledgeable about IP networks and were helpful. Regarding the 502T modem, I ran into a couple of weird behaviors: 1. Need MSIE to program port forwarding rules! I cannot not program any port forwarding rule using Firefox (Linux and Windoze) or Konqueror. 2. When the config pages are accessed with Firefox, some of the icons on the various pages do not load; over a period of 10-12 days it's DNS relay would stop working and withing 2-3 days thereafter it would stop working completely. I need a second hand harddisk - 1G/2G/4G/6G/10G....anything will do. I will be paying out of my pocket money so if you're price is too high then I may not be able to afford it. I am in a dilemma. My Sempron system is heating up quite a bit. I was suggested by my vendor to replace the thermal pad but he didn't know which one is good as none of his customers have ever demanded one. I wonder which one is better - pad / grease? I couldn't find AMD recommended thermal pads / greases. Also, I don't know which thermal pads / greases do we get in Mumbai. The modem connects to your box nic with a straight cable. It has a default ip of 192.168.1.1. You fire up your browser and connect to this ip. You can change the ip to something else, configure static ips, dhcp, some basic firewalling etc. U can also telnet into the modem. U can reflash the modem with the latest kernel, busybox and anything alse that u want flash size permitting. rgds jtd

Hello, I am trying to install GTK2.6 and while installing one of the dependencies - Pango 1.8.2 - I encountered some problems: I have posted the details in the gtk-list mailing list http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gtk-list/2005-August/msg00149.html Now while running the configure script I have noticed something weird. pkg-config is used to find packages already installed. I have installed a utility - fontconfig-2.3.2 - in /usr/local/lib and the .pc file resides in /usr/local/lib/pkgconfig I have set the environment variable PKG_CONFIG_PATH to /usr/local/lib/pkgconfig With this setting, when I issue the command: pkg-config --modverion fontconfig it returns 2.3.2, which is correct Now the problem: When I run the configure script for Pango-1.8.2 it cheks for fontconfig and returns version number 1.0.1 which is not correct. After digging I found an older installation of fontconfig in /usr/lib and the corresponding .pc file in /usr/lib/pkgconfig This older version is 1.0.1 but I want to use the newer 2.3.2 version (in /usr/local/lib). I don't understand why the configure script finds the older version and not the new one even after the environment variable PKG_CONFIG_PATH is properly set. I am also running the configure script with --prefix=/usr/local Digging deeper, I noticed that even xft anf Glib libraries are showing the wrong older version in the configure script. Hello, With reference to my earlier message: I just checked the configure script in detail and I realised my interpretation was wrong. Sorry about that. Nice learning experience though. The configure script checks for fontconfig version 'greater than' 1.0.1, which exists and is proper. Same thing with xft and Glib. All proper. However, I still am not able to install pango. Getting Connected to Internet :(

Hello Friends, Its again me the great old problem child... Now landing here with old problem...in a different way... Im not able to connect Red Hat Linux 9 to internet..Im using Sify broadband ...I have already asked abt this issue in a previous mail..Where in i din't know a bit abt Linux..So friends in here helped me out abt saying how to do it using "neat" command.. I used this command and i have specified my static IP,Gateway,my prefd DNS and alternate DNS also....The state of my connection shows active :( but im not able to even ping the local gateway...also since im not able to ping the local gateway im not also able to use the sify BB client to connect to internet... I tried it whole of last nite didnt work at all :( don't know where im going wrong... please do guide me ...Im not sure...I think i mite get some yellings coz im posting the same issue again...But its ok..I can learn things :) Thanks in advance.. eth1 showing as dev609

hi, i have this small problem. i have 2 NIC (eth0 and eth1) one of the cards suddendly fried. so we got it replaced. but now if i do ifconfig instead of regulare eth0 and eth1, it shows dev609 and eth0. actually it works, but just feels different to call your NIC something like dev609. anyone know how do i revert back to eth1 as it used to be? -- Life is complex. It consists of real and imaginary parts.

Hi Linuxers, I have done my B.E in computers and am looking for a job.However my problem is that all the jobs opening out there are for .NET / SAP / ERP / Visual Crap etc etc. I did not find a single opening (for fresher) in systems programming (c/c++ in *nix, device driver etc) My friends say its foolish of me looking for such a job and that i must take whatever job i get . But my concern is if i take any SAP/.NET etc job what are my chances of switching to a systems job (which is what i want to do ultimately) I have done many hobby projects in linux.Right now im studying "Advanced programming in unix environment" by Richards. But i feel all this is gonna get wasted if i dont get a "good" job. Issue with python pexpect

Hello friends. I am facing a problem with pexpect(python expect). I want to take config of a router to a file. But when accessing the router configuration it comes at a prompt More and where the user has to press the spacebar key.My script presses the space bar key automatically but this process works only 5-7 times after that it comes and stops at the More prompt. MRTG Problem

Hi all, I am trying to configure mrtg, i had succedded in doing the half way, but while trying to generate the graphs using indexmaker i land up with error. # indexmaker --output /var/www/mrtg/test.html /etc/mrtg/mrtg.cfg After executing this command i get this error. I have seen SCSI disks appear and disappear on HBA scans - when they appeared they worked fine but ... they eventually RIP'd. Hi, my debian router tends to do just that after a while of operation. The problem is basically it gives some harddisk related errors. But the harddisk checks out fine. I just need to format and reinstall debian and everything starts working fine. The hardware is quite old. It's a P1 166MHz, 1GB Seagate HD, 64MB RAM. Help is appreciated. Regards. -- Dinesh A. Joshi

Problem with two NICs

Hello guys, I am using FC4 x86_64. I have two LAN cards for two internet connections. One of them is the onboard NVIDIA chipset card. The other one is a Davicom Semiconductor 8139 card. The problem I am facing is that, in my Network Connections under Gnome, I see my NVIDIA card as eth0(forcedeth) which seems to be fine, but for the Davicom card I get an eth0 as well as another network device which is also detected as the same LAN card with a device number that changes every time I reboot my system. The eth1 which should be working fine is not and the other device which is detected works fine. Now, the problem is that I have to change the primary internet connection in Firestarter(firewall) every time I reboot my system. Linux Mail Client - Threads like GMail

Is anyone aware of a Linux mail client that allows one to view the message threads like it is viewed in the web-based gmail account?? Basically view all the threads in one page. Of the mail clients i use - Thunderbird and Kontact - the threads are listed and one has to go to each thread to view its content. -sg

Gyach stuck behind proxy

anybody used Gyach (yahoo voice chat client for linux) sucessfully? when i try to connect i get this error Could not connect to Yahoo! Error connecting via proxy. Proxy replied: 'HTTP/1.0 403 Forbidden' but i can connect to yahoo messenger service with the default yahoo client for linux. i have no clue why its happening? google also didn't help :( -- Life is complex. It consists of real and imaginary parts.

what decides eth0, eth1 and so on?

hi, i have machines here with 2 ethernet cards each. the card that is inseted in the PCI Exp. slot always detected as eth0 and the one onboard eth1 except on the machine where i have 3 NICs. there the onboard gets eth0, PCI exp. NIC as eth1 and the last one inserted in normal PCI slot as eth2. how does OS decides which card to call eth0 or so on? -- Life is complex. It consists of real and imaginary parts.
