Hi all, I am planning a firewall for an ISP setup,where I can filter the well known viruses and protect my N/W from intrusion and can be easily monitored and edited. I am planning for iptables as it is much more versatile,can u suggest me to how to go 'bout with the iptables as I'll have to open almost all the ports and block the ones which are prone to viruses and secondly how do I block the common viruses and is it possible to block spam and mail related viruses through iptables(I already got scanners installed on the mail servers) or suggest me with some better alternative or a package for this kind of setup... If you have some app that has no GNU/linux equiv you can use colinux. http://www.colinux.org/ Colinux allows you to run GNU/linux and windows at the same time like VMware. unlike vmware tho it is free and opensource - could not locate any licence on the site though. rhds jtd

But if you scaled the cost of an ISD call (1200 bytes / s * Rs.0.33 * 60 sec = Rs.20) to that of an internet page (30Kbyte / 1200 * 0.33) you would be paying Rs.8.25 per page. So technology has simplified things to the point where costs and complexity (click to connect) have reduced to negligible levels. This arg is ofcourse a bit oversimplified but valid nonetheless. Freebsd/Freesbie CDs

Anyone having Freebsd 5.3 (this is the latest Production Release, I presume) CDs available? Or know a shop in Mumbai where I can buy them? I saw the screenshots of Freesbie on osdir.com... they look AWESOME!! Anybody tried that? I'm pretty satisfied with Fedora Core 1. But I must find out what makes the Freebsd users go ga-ga about their system's virtues :) On a related note, I have made a 4.3G primary partition for Freebsd. Is this enough space for a typical home user profile? I'm not into heavy gaming or GBs of music etc... Infact one of the aims of this exercise is also to have a visually appealing but light, fast & fully functional desktop with decent amount of free space. tar file error

I had my backups in the file 'backup.tar' earlier in 2004, using the command : tar -cf backup.tar `ls -A` I needed to backup again, so (in 2005) I used the comand : tar -uf backup.tar `ls -A` But now when I try to extract from the file, using - tar -xf backup.tar I get the error : tar: This does not look like a tar archive tar: Skipping to next header tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors The archive manages to extract the files modified/created only in 2005. I dont remember getting any error messages while creating the tar file. Any pointers ?

Dear Nadiem, The issue is that Redhat 9 which U are using .... When Redhat 9.0 was released the 845 chipset was very fresh and support was not present properly ..... Just as Redhat 7.0 did not supported 810E chipset onboard sound card ... the sound was fast forwarded Redhat 7.2 came with proper driver So in Ur case better try some latest rpm for the sound driver Or better even try Fedora Core.... Cannot change volume in mp3blaster or Xine

Getting straight to the point... I have installed the TUI mp3 player called mp3blaster. I am having two problems with it: 1> It plays music too fast. 2> It does not let me increase/decrease the volume. Same applies to the Xine media player. I cannot even change the volume from the Gnome volume controller. (Or for that matter any other WM's volume controller.) I am using RH9. The thing it, this machine has the Intel 845 GL chipset. That apparently seems to be the problem. I have another machine which uses the Intel 810 chipset and everything works fine there. Has anyone else experienced the same issues? Sigdashes are a (de facto) way of specifying where your mail ends and your signature starts. They're pretty cool, because smart mailers and newsreaders can do funky things when they notice sigdashes. For example, many mail clients will strip off old signatures when replying to mails. This is a Good Thing, because, hey, just one signature per mail ya? Many mail clients, like mutt, can display signatures in a different colour or font. So, what /are/ sigdashes? The character sequence "dash dash space" on a line by themselves are collectively known as sigdashes. It looks something like this (without the quotes): "-- " Configuring your mail client to use sigdashes: Pine: Setup | Config - Composer Preferences | Enable Sigdashes - Reply Preferences | Strip From sigdashes in reply Mutt: (sigdashes on by default) in .muttrc, add set sig_dashes=yes unless it's set to "no" in /etc/Muttrc or ~/.muttrc, you do not need to do anything. Network settings (home network)

Please advise: Network settings enables the same hardware device to be configured in different ways, so for instance I can apparently set it to detect network settings automatically (so it takes the settings from the ISP's server using DHCP, just as I already do now) and also manually set it to a local address (say for instance 10.0.0.1, 127.0.0.1 or 192.168.0.1). These can be identified as eth0 and eth1, both referring to the same network card. My questions are based on: if both settings are activated simultaneously, can I use this feature to connect to the Net on one and connect to a local network with the other? If the machine is connected to the Net using a hub, can I then use the machine to act as a local mail server (ie, pick up my mail from my various POP addresses and hold them for local distribution when the other local machine(s) are switched on)? I presume such mail servers (qmail, etc) can also be configured to trash spam and viruses, just as clients do. And what about browsing? Is this what is meant by proxy? Can the box also act as a firewall and virus trap for browsing, using a suitable app? Guidance much appreciated. -- Vickram

Hi I mentioned 'cheap' in my subject line because this is the way I have found it advertised on sites and infact discovered a site which provided for the same. unfortunately this site has stopped distributing cheap cd's. I would not mind paying a reasonable amount for a linux CD. My first mainstream distro Slack 8.0 which I used way back in 2002 was ordered from GT systems the 4 cd pack it cost me around Rs.2800/-. In the current scenario one can download the files (on a fast connection) and burn the CD and make them available at an affordable cost. This will enhance the spread of linux in India. Even many a times in this list someone asks for some distro cds there are hardly any replies. Anyone with relevant links please post it here. Thanks Ninad

Dear Friends, The Mozilla Thunderbird email client really rocks. I downloaded the windows as well as the linux version and both install and work fine. The win version directly imported all my settings, mail and addresses from OE. It is a tough competition for OE in terms of features (security issues aside). The linux version does not import from other than mozilla. It does not recognise evolution. But there were 2 important features that this has and were lacking in evolution. One was that there was no clipboard interface (copy/cut/paste) in the messages in evolution so messages could not be transferred to other text editors but it is full functional in thunderbird. Another is *****It Prints***** messages. It needed a little tweak and print quality is not so good, but atleast now I can get hard copies. Taste the Thunder. www.mozilla.org Regards, Rony.

Hi Recently I bought a new motherboard and assembled a PC. The config is Intel P4 2.4ghz D845GVSR 256mb RAM,on board sound card,Dlink external modem. I used the HDD and cd rom drive of my old pc (a branded IBM PC) for the new one. I am duall booting Win XP and Slack 9.1 ( i am Now I have this pc as a spare PC for which I bought a HDD(40 gb) and also got a crossover cable. This Pc has a config of Celeron 500mhz 64mRAM 40gb HDD no CDrom No floppy drive. I want to connect these two PC's My questions 1.Can I make this old PC a linux only box (dual/triple boot Linux only) and connect to my dual boot new PC. this means that my primary partition should be linux native. 2.If (1) is possible then how do I load linux in this PC which has no Cd rom/floppy drive. 3.Which distro will be suitable as a primary distro. Dear All If I run a "find option(s) -exec cmd {} \;" it executes a single command successfully. But if I want to run a set of command (i.e custom shell function) defined in script it doen't work. You just got yourself one helluva job there... I did the exact same thing.. I chose to keep my trusty old PII and bought a new heavy box with all the frills. Hey why throw a perfectly good thing + it was my first m/c :) I had Win98SE on the old box and XP on the new one. I also got the crossover cable and setup my Lan Cards now you are neck deep in ####. Both of them just didn't want to talk to each other. Cutting this story short, I ran the Home Network wizard over and over and over and finally one really bright day, I could see my XP Share in Win98. (Please remember this needs the Guest account to be activated on the XP box) Otherwise Win98 is shut out. Still XP can't see the 98 box... god knows why (XP I believe came out later than 98 or am I in a time warp ???) I haven't dared touch my current setup Then another really bright day, I got the bug of setting up Linux on the 98 box. I had the dream of surfing in Linux. I took out my RHL 8.0 Cds. To my great surprise I found RHL 8 won't install on XP after some desperate posts. On my 98 box, it just skimmed over in an hour. Now comes the sticky part, RHL 8.0 detects my modem but can't "activate" it. I haven't managed to get back to my adventure... Pull up your socks man .. it's a rocky road ahead. Do let me know if you manage to get it all up. Mail Server Problem

Hi I replaced my crashed mail server(i.e sendmail on Redhat 9.0) machine (lets say machine A) with new machnine(say it machine B) and configured all mail accounts from scratch. Now machine B is working fine. After a month of time I fixed the hardware problem and also upgraded mail server of machine A and now I want to plug it again in my existing network and use it as the default mail server. Hi, I have been searching on google groups so I am sorry if this is a stupid question. I am getting the following line in my log files. ------- 2004-12-11 19:01:57.728221500 delivery 335556: success: did_1+0+0/ ------- What does did_1+0+0 mean, I see this sometime, and other times I see did_1+1+0 or did_1+2+0.. etc.. Can any of the qmail gurus tell me what this means.. >From the net it said that "It's a count of the deliveries that qmail-local did. First one is the file deliveries, next is the forwards, and last is the program deliveries." Does file deliveries - mean just plain old text messages forward deliveries - means forwarded mail??? program deliveries - mean mail with attachments.. Regards, Keith

FC3 DVD copied to HDD-want to write CD's from it

Hi I am a linux user since 2001 and have tried some mini distributions and Slack since 7.1. Currently using Slack 9.1 I had been reading posts on linux forums and found that FC3 and Gentoo were getting more and more popular.Finally I was taken in by the posts about FC3 and decided to try it. I got the FC3 DVD from the linux4u mag. I do not have a DVD. So i found a person in my workplace who had a laptop with CD/DVD drive. I copied all the files in the FC3 DVD to my HDD. Now I want to burn CD's from these files copied to HD. In which order are the files to be burnt Or is there an alternate way. Also when I had tried FC2 test2 The installer had some info abt disk geometry has this been solved in FC3. What is the general opinion about FC3 Thanks and Regards Ninad

Dear All, I wanted to know if there is anyway I can check the reason for server reboot. We have this server which got rebooted under unusual circumstances. No one claims to have rebooted the system, in the boot.msg I see no errors (probably should have come if there was a hard reboot in form of fsck et al). Is there anyway I can crack this one? Are there any steps that I can take to ensure that next time atleast I can find the actual reason? Device Driver Development (all the above topics based on the Linux Kernel) I found companies doing kernel work but most (rather all) are based in Bangalore and Hyderabad. Since i stay in Navi Mumbai and we get just 1 day in our 7th sem and 2 days in our 8th sem for the project, i would prefer a company in Mumbai. I couldnt find any "Yellow Pages" for Linux Kernel related companies in Mumbai. Could someone point me to companies doing this work. The print quality in thunderbird improved by making some changes in its font settings. 1. In Preferences, in the Display option, instead of default 'Fixed Width Font', the 'Variable Width Font' was selected. This gave a better shape to the font look. 2. In Preferences, in the Fonts option, the 'Proportional' and 'Monospace' fonts text boxes were given the option 'Sans Serif'. This also improved the look of the messages in the window too. lan connection problem

hi i had a redhat 7.1 server connected over bnc cable to a windoze machine. No problems. I changed the server to mandrake10 and the cable to utp - just a crossover cable. the nic cards on the two machines have been tested and they work. When the cable is connected, both lan cards show a steady green light. But ping doesnt ping. They guy who made the cable says that if the green lights are steady on both sides it means the wiring is correct. Is he right? -- regards kg tally ho! http://avsap.sourceforge.net

Since cluster managment (or any other app for that matter) depends on the nature of the problem u are trying to solve u are likely to get stupid or rant responses like this one to a stupid question. Let's not get more holier-than-thou than anyone needs to be. When the cybercafe owner is a pirate, the main loser (at least in India) is billy boy (unless cafes have illegal copies ;-) of Tally), but I doubt anyone on this list is going to weep copiously about that. Practically every other popular software application needed on Windows comes free, and is probably designed that way precisely because the vendor or developer wants it to be that way. All the cybercafe owner needs is a viable alternative (cost effective and workable) to M$ piracy for the present, I suspect. But this can only be determined at the meeting, not by the kind of occasional and casual guesswork that outsiders (ie, non-cafe operators on this list, including me) can perform. Is the list expected to grow (and exponentially, let's not fool ourselves about which technology we are enthused by, and the way it is growing) or is it intended to be confined to a cosy little closed group of narcissists? There will always be newbies, and there will always be people who only need to know the basics to get their work done, there will be people who know a lot and that is their work, and hopefully there will be lots of people who not only know a lot, but are willing to take that extra step to work and help others - at what cost, only an informed discussion can determine. I sincerely hope there will be people here on this list who are enthused by this chance. My suggestion that we look at a coalition of interests (hardware - which is to say assemblers - suppliers, maintenance specialists, network specialists, integrators, buyers and finally end-consumers) that can exchange views on services, service levels and structures around which such services can be effectively marketed. For instance (maybe it doesn't need a meeting to determine this, but somehow we humans do love being heard), maybe we can consider a formal or informal FOSS collective or guild, with rules or guidelines governing rates, SLAs and distro designs. Maybe it needs a small-scale business to do this. Why close our minds to the possibilities before they are even discussed? But why are there so many list cribbers who seem to think that new avenues of making money should not even be discussed before dismissing the concept right away? I finally got enough money to get a new OS. So far I've tried only RPM based distros. I have heard only good things about Ubuntu - single CD though based on Debian. What I want to know is after installing Ubuntu, using the much talked about apt-get (provided I'm connected to the net), can I get specific Debian software packages (say related to engineering and such stuff) onto my OS ? I don't think that his attempt to pull together a coalition of small businesspeople needed such a supercilious set of responses. Either everyone on this list has got some good well-paying secure jobs, or you have all forgotten what it takes to run a business in India from scratch. Although the history of cybercafes is quite recent (I believe they just celebrated the decade anniversary of the first one, in London), there are quite a few people who think that this innovation is at least as powerful and potentially far more powerful than the PCO. I am one of them, as you may have guessed. I see absolutely no reason that a business based on fairly inexpensive consumer devices should require a PhD in computer science at the entry level - and given a working life of three to four years for the average small businessperson - certainly there is no reason for the vast majority of them to acquire such indepth tech knowledge - unless the fundas of the business are genuinely too complex. Goodbye ICT, in that case, but maybe none of you here are interested in what that is. It irks me no end to read about the ham-handed way our government (both state and central) goes about frequently changing the rules of the game for cybercafe owners (for all users of ICT actually, but the main bloc of commercial users are cybercafes). Against such inevitable and wayward externalities, one simple solution is for persons with a little more tech knowledge to band together to offer - for a fee, no-one is suggesting anything else. What will the fees be, who will charge them, what is the service offering - are you waiting for NASSCOM or IMC or the Mumbai Police to define this for you, or are you willing to come together and work with a group of these small businesspeople - for all you know, some are your neighbours - and work this out for yourself? If not at a LUG, maybe this isn't the best time and place, then the alternative already suggested is CDAC at Nariman Point, on a suitable day. And if this list isn't a suitable place to discuss the real world, then perhaps anyone who does volunteer a little time and effort to kick this off can put together a different list where the right solution can emerge. -- Vickram

Hey sherlock, I think you misinterpreted, what Mr.Jain has to say. I think he, like myself wants to write a full-fledged device driver in linux. Not the amateurish "Hello World" LKMs or a pseudo-device driver as is explained in the Rubini and Corbet. He, I assume, like myself, wants to undertake a full-fledged device driver project(for just about anything), so that he gets a hands-on experience in writing drivers for actual, real-world devices. I hope I am right Hemendra !!! Btw, I am ready to be a part of the team,as although I myself have good-enough knowldege of Linux internals and Device drivers, I have never actually written a driver for anything and as such would very much like to. The GNU archive overflows the DVD by about 300MB. There are eight CD images, but as usual only the first four are being made available. The K8 disc set at least matches the quality of the K7 set which IMO was the best I had produced to date. The quality of a disc set is largely determined by the quality of the packages and the overall state of the official Debian and gnuab archives. As usual, comments and suggestions are welcome. Hello all ! I just joined in the mailing list. my keenness in understanding technology brought me into cyber cafe operations for a while. Currently I am offering my bit in representing the small independnet Cyber cafe operators. If members permit me I would like to present the cyber Cafe model . Its been a unique to all third world country where low income levle / low literacy but sharp entrepreneurial instinct blosomed the commercial telecentres in less thna 6 years made them as common sight as that of a barber shop or a cobbler. Our estimates put over 30% of netizens in less developed countries depend on cafes for net access as a shared / pay per usage model & for the many waiting to embarace the Internet, they act as cradle to digital society. I have read the numerous responses to vickram's post & felt like there is a a gap in understanding some of our friends carry here & what cyber cafe operators feel . Before I am permited to go in detail , I offer a few points / clarification in the hope it offers some insight to the FLOSS entrpreneurs #> for many like me the reason to be in a cyber cafe business is because they are clueless to hat technology offer an opportunity & its the best way to acquaint the tricks, few maintain the status quo beyond 3 years at best & they hop to better allied business. like hardware/ data processing/ web development / training. We estimate there are less than 25% stand alone cyber Cafes. ie offer on net access. #> What interest a cafe operator or any business man is a solution , which ever technology gets them is fine. #> Most of us did not have a complete & visible choice - I can buy the license copy of OS & Office but then what about other add on softwares which has made it a must for operating a Public access computer ? Multiple default routes!

Hi, I am using a RH 9.0 host. I know that multiple 'default' routes do not make sense. But still I can add multiple default routes via 'route add default gw <ip-address> command. Is this some feature that I do not understand? I guess that the behaviour will be as follows if I have 'two default routes'. If the first default gateway is reachable, the packets will be routed through that gateway. If it is unreachable, the packets will be routed through the other gateway. I am facing a problem due to this, in that I am unable to ping out of my subnet when the DHCP servers of the two subnets each assign a default gateway to my machine. So I have two default gateways. Dear Mumbai Linuxers May I suggest a topic for the meeting? This is to meet an urgent and very real need of a service group that I happen to think is particularly important to India, and Mumbai as well. The service group is cybercafe operators. Currently, as many of you know, cybercafes are very tiny outfits, aside from the hyped up Sifys and Webworlds, which are just a handful. Most of these outfits use Windows in various flavors - I hesitate to call it MS Windows, for the simple reason that most copies are in fact pirated and of poor quality (now, now, let's not get ;-) nasty everyone, about the quality of the native product). As a result, when the police get into one of their sudden spurts of public spirit and barge into these little corner shops, enthusiastically rounding up customers and owners indiscriminately, while purportedly looking for offcolour downloads and spies around every corner, they have a very easy and genuine excuse for harassment - illegal software. The current level of hafta is around one month's gross revenue for a small cafe, renewable whenever the local officer concerned gets transferred and a new one comes around hungry. So what's the solution, and how can we help? Most of these businesses are really small, and are quite technically unequipped to deal with issues of software and hardware. They depend on small assemblers for their low cost machines, and this usually means the machines come preloaded with some form of Windows OS, and the usual slew of applications that customers want. I don't know what cybercafe customers actually want by way of applications, and I suspect that not many of us do either. What I am suggesting is that we turn the LUG meet into a session where representatives of both cybercafes and small assemblers can come, with the objective being to make a wish-list. We need to find out what the statistically typical hardware configuration is, what the commonly used applications are, and to make a distro that will install on most cybercafe machines. This distro can be duplicated either by members for a small fee, or turned over to the cybercafe reps at some point, or distributed through Mumbai IT magazines, or whatever. These points need to be worked out in consultation with the target audience ie., the owners and the assemblers. Idea is of course ease of use for both cybercafe owners and for the assemblers, who as you know are hardly aware that there are any choices in OS other than Windows. I think that although the owners are really very small businesses, and as a group quite unorganised, we may possibly be able to create a set of local micro-businesses for members doing this (keeping the distros updated and uniform over time). I am thinking not just of the task of making readymade distros, but of low cost training (neighborhood informal training schools) for assemblers and their techies. If this idea sounds interesting to you all, please do offer your yeas or nays here on the list. Dr Jitu Shah is already sensitised to this matter, and has I understand offered the use of the C-DAC offices in Nariman Point (capacity 60 persons seating) for a meeting on the subject. 9 Jan sounds like a good date for such a meeting, kicking off the new year on a very positive and socially useful manner. Dear Vickram, You have a great idea...! Well a year ago, I and my friend decided to sell proxy solutions to these small time cafe's and faced the following problems 1. The small cyber cafe's cannot afford to provide one stand-alone machine for the proxy set-up. Normally they set-up win/analog/free proxy on a machine and allow users to use it during peak hours. 2. A entire GNU\Linux cyber cafe setup has the most daunting task (others may disagree) of a browser which supports all sites just like IE....we may agree that IE is insecure...but most of the sites are optimised for IE..! Opera is the best but then its paid..! 3. Cyber cafe accounting software is also needed, the present ones are all windows based, there are a couple of projects on freshmeat but have'nt found success implementing them, maybe need to invest more man hours. 4. Messengers with similiar LOOK FEEL AND FUNCTIONALITY..! 5. VOIP dialer applications to run on the OS. There are more such avenues where the LUG can play an immediate and active role. 1. I had got first hand reports of management students who received Laptops with Suse loaded feeling uncomfortable and loading WinXP in them. This hapenned at MET too..! 2. Educating pupils in schools and colleges too can ensure Linux Domination by 2007. 3. We had a Marketing exec who used RedHat 9.0 for a year as a desktop but couldnt convince himself and others for extending it, since Word docs were'nt the same when they viewed it in OOffice. People like me have to be blamed....i have to follow the TALK LESS WORK MORE regimen immediately. My new year resolution would be to act more in spreading awareness about GNU\Linux, we have to make life easier on GNU\Linux than on windows if we were to ever dream of a secure. I have succesfully helped many of my friends who are IT managers in non-IT firms to atleast bring about a foot in the door for GNU\Linux and can use more contacts and reach to convince others too. Although I'am not so sure of my work schedule next week , i would try my level best if we can have a user interaction and a wish list ready in the meet. Pricing is decided by competition and you do not have luxary of adding up all costs. The cost has to be minimise. Nor does it make sense to tell them that they cannot do business without skills. Hello All If log in as root (or run a root cron job) and send a content of file lets say xyz.txt by using following command cat xyz.txt | mail -s "subject" touser(a)gomainname.com then my message is delivered to destination as showing "root" is the sender. Yeah nice qualification to run a bussiness whose service is delivered on hardware and software. Your intentions are laudable, but U cant help. As u stated in the rest of your mail It's not the owner / assembler but the customer who decides what os is on the pc. And given the level of zombieness around it will be sometime before things change, at that point things will resolve themselves. Availability of distros is not a problem. Availability of skill is only a little more of a problem. However to people who think nothing of piracy, paying money for skill is anthema. Go offer your service to a cybercafewalla and see. In fact offer him your services for free and see. All the piffle about poor and skill etc is rubbish. They are fully clued in on the piracy issue and have made a conscious decision to gyp someone (oh my heart bleeds for the OTHER CONVICTED PIRATE). fsck - Superblock has a bad ext3 journal (inode 8)

Hi I've got a kernel panic ... When I boot using a rescue CD and try fsck /dev/hda3 it says: Couldn't find ext2 superblock, trying backup blocks... Superblock has a bad ext3 journal (inode 8) Clear? I have tried fsck -b option too ... no joy.. same error. All other partitions, 9 in all are fine... Only /dev/hda3 which is the / partition is reporting this error. Any way for me to recover this partition? What will happen if I type 'y' when prompted with 'Clear?' .. Will that loose any chance I have left in trying to recover the data from this partition? I suspect the / partition got full ... which may have caused this error to begin with... More than recovery of data, I'm interested in finding out if that was the case or not. Rishi

Fecthmail and loal pop server setup

Hello, I am trying to setup Intranet mail server. I have successfully implemented Postfix mail server with SMTP AUTH. Now I want to setup local pop server so that user can download mail locally. I have two pop server say pop.abc.net and pop.pcq.net with two users with diffecrt user name and password. Fectchmail can be used to download mail from remote mail server. Now how to configure fetchmail to forward mails to local mail server. I know fecthmail can be run daemon mode. How to run fectchmail at startup time. If I set poll time for fetchmal for ten seconds and during that if that client, try to access mail what will happen? Thank you Komal

Hello All, I am new to this group and is a Java Developer (J2EE). Just hanging around as I sometimes do work on Linux and I like it. I completely agree with biju. Biju it's good to have such an inspiring member in the group. Sometimes members are so newbie that they are not able to put in appropriate search keywords thus getting huge listing in google which is of no use. In such case we need to help them. Amish I also agree with you. We do need to keep guys reminding that before posting simple questions one should try finding solution on their own. This helps to groom our members to become independent and gradually they can also start helping other members of group. Dear All, I know its very irritating when people ask simple questions.....but from my point of view we should encourage all types of questions rather that pointing at google or man. Its true amish, that individuals do not utilise the existing information before shooting questions, but often most of my solutions come from existing replies on mailing lists all around the world, indexed by google. Preassumptions on how the member utilizes the information or on whether he/she uses it or not is not worthwhile probing into. Maybe the enlightened can provide exact links for a particular topic to reduce the time taken for searches. CUPS / Dell 720 / SAMBA / Adobe Printing Qs

Hi All, I have been trying from the last 2 days to configure my Dell 720 (Lexmark 615) printer to work with Linux + Windows (SMB) I am using SuSE 9.2, with CUPS. I have finally managed to get it to work perfectly on Linux, and on Windows using the Adobe Generic Postscript Printer. On Linux, I have it setup the printer through CUPS, with the appropriate Lexmark driver. (Color works fine) On Windows, I could only set it up, with the Adobe driver. The problem is that there is no Color. I have the Windows Driver for the printer, but it does not seem to work with CUPS. Any ideas on how I can get color working, or better, if I can get the native Windows Driver to work ? Also, on the cups site, the windows driver is not available for download (??) Thanks. Shahed

Dear Friends, Has anyone from the group actually used the Epson LX-300 dot matrix printer on Linux, with good print quality in Open Office, Evoluion and other software? If so which is that Linux version? After finally managing to get a printout in Open Office, I am again stuck in Evolution. It does not print. It not only throws out the paper but the empty roller keeps rolling for some time and I am scared it may cause overload to the motors or control circuit. Both these programs are too good but its a pity they can't print decently. I even downloaded OO 1.1.3 from the net but it still does not improve print quality, which is terrible. LX 300 is a very common SOHO printer. Regards, Rony.

Partition table problems...

Hello, I know there are hundreds of questions about fixing the partition table. But mine, i suppose is a peculiar case. My disk structure is something like this: 1) Disk 1 - 10GB /dev/hda (partitioned into C:, volgroup00 for FC3, /boot for FC3 ) 2) Disk 2 - 40GB /dev/hdb (partitioned into D:,E:, F:) Windows, Knoppix HD-Install, and even distros like Suse can read data off /dev/hdb1(2,3..) and of course off /dev/hda. However the problem comes when installing distros. Whenever it comes to partitioning step, i *always* get a message saying "/dev/hdb: This disk is not initialised. Dow u want to format? This will erase entire disk" on RedHat and "This disk cannot be read. Please format it. Ignore this messgae if u are not planning to install Suse on this partition." on suse. Also, Partition Magic and QtParted cannot read the partitions on this disk. QtParted just hangs, and Partition Magic 6.0 on startup says that this disk need to be repaired. Sad I donot know whats up, but my guess is that it is due to corrupted partition table. Is there any way to repair the partition table, without damaging the data already stored on this disk? I mean, isnt it surprising that data can be read / written perfectly on this disk? What is the problem? Also, in addition to this question, does QtParted support resizing and modifying data on a partition without damaging the data? problem with fedora booting

Hi all, I am facing this typical problem with Fedora core 3 . I did not face this problem with any of previous Redhat distros. I have a 40 gb hdd of which 32 is usable. My partitioning is as follows: 1) C:\ ------- 4gb 2) D:\---------10gb 3) E:\---------remaining I installed windowsxp in C: Then i installed fedora core 3 by deleting D: partition and have /boot ,swap and root partition for fedora core 3.I installed grub in the MBR. The installation went fine.But when i rebooted it brought me to the grub command line I did not get the grub OS selection screen. I tried giving the root partition on the grub command line.But it always told me that it lies outside the cylinder range.This problem never happened with previous versions of redhat or fedora. I also tried with other setup. After starting the installation of Fedora I deleted all the partitions and installed Fedora core 3 within the first 2 gb with /boot,swap and root partition.This was a minimal install.Grub was installed in MBR Then i installed Fedora core 1 after fedora core 3 using the same /boot and swap as that of fedora core3.I did not install grub for fedora core 1.Instead i modified the /boot/grub/grub.conf to include the 2.4.22 kernel of Fedora core1. This time it gave me the OS selection screen with both kernels.I could boot into Fedora core3 but not into fedora core1.It still gave me that the root partition is out of boot cylinder range. Can anyone help me out? Pankaj

Hi, i had followed the same approach.First I checked whether the SQLNET service is listed in /etc/services.It was not , so i added an entry to the same.Next I denied access to this service in hosts.deny for a particular IP , but still the machine with the specified IP(the one to whom the SQLNET service was denied) is able to connect to oracle.The service is not listed in xinetd.d.What shud i do next ? This meet was attended by about 25 people coming from all over the city. Following discussions and talk were held: -> *Python Programming - by Steve* Steve Fernandes from Ensim specially came down form Pune to give a talk on Python. Python is an upcoming language which is being considered by many as an ideal programming language which a beginner and people from non-programming background can start with. Python, which was originally developed by scientists and mathematicians has many inherent advantages that makes it favored for a lot of applications. Python is used in a large number of places like redhat's config tools as well as complex and heavy applications like Zope and GNU Mailman. A Python program flows like poetry, hence it is easy to read and self documenting. Please see homepage for full presentation slides of Python talk. By the way, the language "Python" is named after the BBC show ``Monty Python's Flying Circus'' and has nothing to do with nasty reptiles. -> *Mono - by Amish* Amish Munshi from Novell gave a talk on Mono. Hi All, I installed debian sarge on my PC today, and suddenly I discovered a lot of new problems. 1. I am not able to dial the internet using kppp, it connects and says pppd died (return code 1) 2. wvdial "cannot detect dialtone", although I can clearly hear it from the modem. 3. x server does not start up. It does _not_ throw an error, however the screen blanks out, but the frequency is _not_ out of range(the monitor does _not_ blink). The modem and X was working fine until the morning, when I was using FC2. Can anybody help? -- Ketan Padegaonkar

Apache 1.3.33 problem

I compiled apache 1.3.33 and installed it in /usr/local/apache. But the website is not showing up. Firefox says the connection was refused (I am typing in 'http://localhost/'). If I try to view the status using the 'apachectl' application, here's the output I get : [root@localhost htdocs]# ../bin/apachectl status ERROR at dump.c:188: Network is unreachable 'netstat -a' shows the following output : Active Internet connections (servers and established) Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State tcp 0 0 *:http *:* LISTEN I am running Fedora Core 3 with mostly the default options (firewall and everything). I haven't installed the pre-packaged httpd. Somehow, I don't feel this is an Apache problem, it seems that I am just not able to connect to it. I just installed debian sarge from the PCQ Debian dvd on a new elcheapo laptop. It is fast, stable and absolutely easy to install. IMHO in a production environment stability and continued subsequent maintanence (very minimal but neccessary) is most important. The debian apt packaging system and hundreds of fast mirrors make maintanence a breeze - even for a nontechie newbie. Debian packaging policy also insists on stability over other factors (except freedom). And since u are going to pay someone to install insist on debian - the commercial-politic free distro. Also i have found the reiserfs file system to be astoundingly reliable - 8 to 10 power outs a day for the past 6 mths without any file corruption. Hello Linuxers, Whenever I try to ssh form my rh9 box to other boxen on the network, the fingerprinting fails. The error given is "cannot create directory /home/foo/.ssh". This directory is, ofcourse, required to store the fingerprint (known_hosts) and dsa keys. I verified the perms on the directories and even tried creating the directory manually, but no go. My ultimate aim is to setup ssh without keys, so that a user can ssh to/from my box without being prompted for passwords or passphrases. Any help would be appreciated. Open Office Printer

Dear Luggers, My printer queue name is 'LX300' and device is a local printer /dev/lp0. What command should I add in the command line for the open office printer setup? I tried lpr, lp -d LX300, lpr -d LX300 but nothing seems to work. The test page in the OO printer setup simply ejects the page out. The Red Hat printer setup prints the test page properly. Any help will be most appreciated. I finally figured it out upto this point from googling the net, but this is the last hurdle. Regards, Rony.
