hi, i downloaded acrobat reader the linux version from the adobe site. the link is http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html now while installing as written in the install document i untar the file and the tried to run the install script by ./INSTALL command. but it was not installing . i am not being able to run it. cannot figure out why. please can somebody try this out and tell me. i am doing this on RH 9. thanks a lot........... __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? hi fellow linux users , thanks for your reply but no solution has worked yet. this mail is sum up most of your question you asked me. hope this can help you solve my problem. i downloaded acrobat reader from this link (linux version) http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html i untared the file. read the doument on installation. it said to run the INSTALL command. but when i did that it gave an error. Morning Guys/Gals, Me has an urgent need of advice from your end. Hoping for some pointers. For one of TCS's client we have configured Nagios and a host of other GPL'ed applns top aid him in Network Monitoring as part of a very large project. This last problem has me stumped. In my network consisting of purely AIX/Gnu-Linux/HP-UX i have to provide a single console for monitoring all logs and trigger an alert/alarm as soon as a particular message comes up in the logs. These logs will be both system and application logs and hence the messages to be tracked has to be customisable. Lemme know if someone has had this problem solved before or has any inkling of what appln we can make use of. RAM Testing

Dear Luggers, This is on topic. Has anyone developed a bootable floppy that only does the function of testing the RAM to simulate optimum operation conditions and give results if the RAM is good or bad. The problems with some RAMs is that they pass the bios test but make the system hang before starting the OS completely. It wastes a lot of time of the engineer to locate the problem as it could be due to a bad HDD, IDE cable or corrupted system files or RAM. Replacing the RAM is the only option available for testing it. The benchmarking programs that are available are platform dependent and need an OS to be loaded. If such a bootable floppy was available to test the RAM in full simulated operation then this would be very handy. Since the bios has drivers for the keyboard and floppy, no other drivers would be really needed and only the small RAM testing program would be needed on the bootable floppy. In future we can have other bootable floppies that test the CPU, motherboard and other devices *without loading any OS*. It would make life easier for the engineer. Regards, Rony.

[OT] My PC won't start...Please help!

Hi Linuxers, I've got this problem with my PC, it just refuses to start. The problem started a couple of days back. I was working on it and suddenly the entire system went off. I tried restarting, checked all the connections & cables. When I switch on the main power and press the power button on the cabinet, nothing happens. The motherboard LED comes on and the monitor LED blinks green but no chassis fan, no CPU fan, hard-disk not starting, nothing. System specs : AMD Duron 1.2 GHz ASUS A7N 266 VM mobo 128MB Hynix DDR SDRAM 20 GB Samsung HDD Samsung CDRW DAX LAN Card The SMPS was replaced only a month back. RAM was replaced 2 months ago. Fresh CMOS battery plugged in a week ago. The system is 2.5 years old. Sorry about the OT-ness and length of this post. If anybody could provide any help, I'll be infinitely thankful. hi friends, i have a problem. i have 3 computers with tally on them. now i am putting up a server which is linux. now i want to know if it is possible to move the data of tally onto the server and it still be accesable to the server. and a forthmachine will be added with a tally client(windows) to again view the data of tally. the server will have rh 9 . samba and mail server. another server will be added which will conatin firewall and proxy. now tell me if the tally thing is possible and how should it be done. especially if anybody has donethis in their company. thankx. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Hi all, Actually I had framed the question wrong in a jiffy.........thank you for the answers.. The problem i have observed with most of the mail servers in a corporate network is that there seems to be no authentication on the relay mail server........ I have observed that although the servers in the internal network of a corporate org have proper SMTP auth means, the relays or gateways for external mail delivery do not seem to authenticate the user. On such n/w's I'am able to send mail from xyz(a)copstop.com to abc(a)copstop.com using low level SMTP chat from home by telnet to port 25 to one of copstop.com's relay servers facing the internet. Where'as i'am not either of the two. The mail received by abc looks original but shows from : xyz(a)copstop.com to: <> undisclosed recipients in the header and logs. Is there a way out where I can stop mail from: xyz(a)copstop.com only when the relay server is accepting mails from other servers.(incoming) The gateway is using sendmail as an MTA. I would be happy to give any clarifications needed. As far as usage is concerned clicking mouse buttons hardly requires any training Well one 55++ yr old newbie to computers did require training on moving the mouse and took to GNU/Linux like a pro. Switch on and the browser opens onto some cricket site. Kmail opens up and downloads mails. Xmms starts playing some bhajans etc. etc. He wonders what are computer viruses and why everbody in his office are in such a state of terminal anxiety every few weeks. rgds jtd

Dear Luggers, This is off topic. The recent fire at Sion had 3 casualties. A woman and her child took refuge in a lift to escape from the fire and reach the ground floor. However, just at that time, the building's power was switched off for safety and the two got trapped inside, inhaled poisonous gases and expired. To prevent such tragedies from happenning, lift manufacturers could provide a mechanical crank inside the lift to let the occupants slowly bring the lift up or down to a safe floor. If the doors are the automatic type, then a mechanical arrangement to open the door in case of an emerrgency. As a safety measure, the door will open only when the lift has aligned with any available floor. If you know people in this profession, please pass on this message to them. Regards, Rony.

While installing scribus on BSD I am getting the following error on 'GNUMAKE=gmake ./configure' : configure: error: You need at least freetype 2.1.0 I have installed both freetype-1.3.1 and freetype-2.1.9 from source. 2 cpus instead of one

Hi, I have a few linux servers which in /proc/cpuinfo shows the number of cpu's, on some servers, however I have only one cpu but top and /proc/cpuinfo show's two. Any idea why does it show like this and what is a correct way for analysing how many CPU's are present on the system. Does this happen on only certain hardware, as I have noticed this on my SuperMicro and HP servers only. Thanks in advance... Regards, Keith

Hi, Can anyone point me to where I can get an explanation of the named statistics on the internet. I couldnt find much. The reason being in my stats, the failuers are showing 8483727, is that normal. People are not complaing about my DNS, and my Name server is running fine. inode problem

Hi, I have a mailing application running on RedHat 7.3, Every couple of months we have a problem with the inodes getting used up on the /var partition. There is a lot of space on the partition, However the inodes are used up by a lot of 0 byte files by this application. I just wanted to ask the gurus in the list, if anyone came across this problem and how they went about trying to solve it. I had to find out the 0 byte files in /var and then deleted the 0 byte files. Thanks.. Regards, Keith

mysql's grant command

Three problems.

Hi, I've got three problems: 1.Today suddenly I'm not able to boot from Yoper. GRUB gets loaded, I'm able to boot SUSE and M$ but when I select Yoper screen goes blank there's no activity even the keyboard doesnt work? Does anyone have any idea about it. 2. I'm not able to use 'mount' in Yoper. It used to work fine initially but only with CDRW and not with CD-ROM but that was ok as I was able to mount the cd. But now strangely I'm not able to mount CDRW through local user as well as 'root'. Here's a snapshot of what happens. http://www.geocities.com/latesh1/temp/snapshot1.jpg 3. I want to install 'wvdial' on Yoper. But when ever I try to install it, it gives me dependencies error. I use RIM to connect internet and it used to work fine in SUSE. I tried KPPP but it halts on 'Initialising Modem' also query modem results are blank. I connect my RIM through serial cable. Please help me out with this. Latesh.

Hello, I recommend buying Sony DVD ROM Drive. I have one and its definitely better than samsung. No ideas about LG make. Besides i would suggest you not to invest in combo. DVD writer costs around 6000 bucks and are good enough to burn both CDs (16/24 x) and DVDs (4x). Regards, Peeyush

hi, this is a problem i find everytime i connect to a remote machine in college. whenever i connect to machine B from machine A using telnet i can not run any X application I do not have root access to any of these machine. There can be problem due to xhost or $DISPLAY. Can any one suggest the solution. Even if it requires root access just give the suggestion. regards

[OT] Investigating Accidents

Hello Luggers, Whenever an accident takes place on the road, the biggest problem is to find out who was at fault. This is even more important when investigating accidents involving public transport buses and trucks. If we have a video recorder that will record the entire bus journey, it would use up a lot of memory space with unnecessary recordings. Instead of that suppose we have a system where video cameras mounted strategically on the bus send their signals to an onboard computer mounted inside a safe black box. The recording memory will only be sufficient for recording one or two minutes of video recording. The system will be such that the older recording will be continuosly overwritten by the new one, so at any given time, the last two minutes recording of the bus journey will be available. Whenever there is a crash or sudden jerks or hard braking, the sensors mounted on the bus will send a signal to the computer which will zip the last 2 minutes recording into a file and send it by wireless networks to the control room's base station. This file can be usefull to investigate accidents involving public buses. Later on it can also be made mandatory on all private vehicles who will trasnsmitt the signals to a central controll room of the traffic department. Thanks and Regards, Rony.

hdb2 not mountable : super block inconsistent

Morning guys/gals, Am in bit of a soup here. I have an ext3 disk at a clients place of which one of the partitions has gone kaput. Essentially they are as follows: >> hdb1 : /boot >> hdb2 : / >> hdb3 : Swap /boot is mountable while / isn't. I have used the knoppix rescue cd and have tried to mount the partition but it gives me and error with the superblock. When i try mounting using the mount command i get an error saying that mount partition can't be recognised. Just last week this issue had come up. I asked the client to pull out the IDE cables, clean the machine and plug them in. By the grace of god, the partition got mounted again. This time around lady luck seems to have failed me. I am quite lost for a solution to the same. If anyone could pass one some suggestions to help recover the production data on the disk i would be highly obliged. Video issues with VLC 0.7.2 on FC2

Hi, I downloaded and installed the latest VLC 0.7.2. It is playing all the video files VCD, DVD with full audio support. However the video gets disturbed with green shadows. The picture orienation and geometry is not distorted, but every object (say face of a character in movie) gets a shadow with small small green squares. I am using abit ZM6 motherboard with ATI MACH64 AGP card (detected and setup properly by fedora during install). CPU is Celeron 500 MHz and RAM is 450MB SDRAM. I am using Viewmate 17" monitor. If anybody has some clue regarding this issue please help. The best way of reaching there is by a combination of Road and Rail. Mumbai has two main suburban train tracks respectively called after the Central and Western Railways. The suburban trains of Mumbai are called 'local' trains. If you are on the Central Railway, get down at Kanjurmarg or Vikhroli and take an auto to IIT. The auto will take around Rs. 10 - 15. To board any of the buses, you'll have to walk slightly till a bus stop on the main L.B.S.Road and take any Andheri/Borivali bound bus. The fare is around Rs. 3. If you are coming from the Western Railways, get down at Andheri and take any of the buses going to Mulund from the eastern side of the railway station. The fare would be roughly Rs. 6. Using Eudora Internet Mail Server

I configured EIMS on my box to handle outgoing mail - it seemed a good idea, saving me a bit of grief on outgoing mail. However, the log showed me within a day or two that the server was apparently being used to relay mail for others, although I had checked off the boxes that should have restricted sending mail to known IDs - in fact, only this one. Needless to say I have discontinued using it. Can anyone guide me about correctly configuring SMTP? -- Vickram

Single User Mode

Hi all Regarding the discussion on the saftey if one can enter LINUX by switching into single user mode at the boot prompt one solution that I can think of is to comment the line specifying the single user mode in the /etc/inittab file [ l1:1:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc 1 ]. Then the system will boot but the system can't be started correctely in the single user mode not only @ the boot prompt but even otherwise. Only the magic buttons CTRL + ALT + DEL works if not diabled. Inorder to switch into the Single user mode then one with the rootly powers has to uncomment the line and then ask the init process to re-examine the /etc/inittab file once again by typing "init q". Hi all, I have Fedora Core 2 on one P4 comp, single processor with 2 GB RAM. I want to know whether I can run several java applications on the same comp. Like 7 java web applications, some of them are using Resin and others Tomcat as Webserver. Will I need VMWare on Linux for this purpose? I dont want to use VMWare because , it hogs memory. /etc/passwd

I have not yet found the answer to this question, hence asking it here. The /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow files have read-only permissions for users (/etc/shadow is read-only for root too!). Still using the passwd command users are able to change their passwords (which means changing the corresponding entries in /etc/shadow). I understand that both these files are not accessed directly by the commands but by some API's (google gives this much info !!)... so as far as I understand, the API must be running with SU perms.... but still users are able to change only their own passwds (and not others)... can someone explain exactly what goes on.....? maybe shed some more light on this... :) Thanks in anticipation, Priyam. -=-=- ... Hi! I am trying to send a mail from a script like cat /tmp/mymail.txt | sendmail where sendmail is the sendmail interface provided by Postfix. mymail.txt contains a valid From: field which is like my_id(a)yahoo.com However when I see the mailq, the sender field says: "root(a)localhost.localdomain" I tried the sendmail -bs switch but it gives following message: 220 localhost.localdomain ESMTP Postfix 221 Error: I can break rules, too. Goodbye. How do I override the root(a)localhost.localdomain ? Thanks, Nikhil P.S. Hi all, I tried the realrcptto patch from http://multivac.cwru.edu./qmail/#qmail-realrcptto on the qmail server, I installed the patch successfully with no errors but it seems to be not working as any mails listed for an invalid user still comes up in my server and there is no bounceback mail returned :recipient is rejected with "553 sorry, no mailbox here by that name. (#5.1.1)" "...Infact there is no bounceback mail from postmaster too..(which was working before) So can u pls let me the mistake I've done (if any) or help me with the installation or with some other alternative.. Trevor, the gripe yatayati has is not what you are addressing. If I had been treated that way by redhat, I would have boycotted them for life and would make all out efforts to have them kicked out of all my client sites. I work with microsoft who are the most commercial of all companies, also holds many senimars which we attend. Believe me, they will never do something like this. Neither do oracle or ibm whose seminars we attend. Every company gives high values, respect and respect to consultants and advisors because clients will not iuse their products if not recommended by the consultants. I do not know who else they turned back that day, but it will cost them dearly. Some observations for the deeply hurt, newbies etc. First using GNU/Linux does not confer on u some heaven sent halo. U & I are going to be treated based solely on our reputations (bussiness, academic, social or otherwise) by bussiness organistaions. Infact using GNU/Linux will put u under great stress while dealing with various bussinesses because the people answering u have been honed into perfect zombies (my personal favourite is Orange). Second all bussinesses exist to fatten the owners, managers and employees (weightage keeps shifting from time to time). All the other drivel that they spew is towards meeting this goal.If the managers are cunning they will manipulate things to get minimum flack and generally stay below the horizon of vociferous fringe groups shouting nonsense like freedom and morals and what have u. Redhat, Novell, IBM,M$, Oracle, Intel, U, I etc. are all fighting the same battle using different weapons and strategies. U & I are distractions in the battle of the big boyz for the booty. Thirdly promoting GNU/Linux to the masses is at best a utopian pass time.The current set of GNU/Linux (5% of computer users) constitutes the top 1% of tech savvy (intelligent?) homosapiens. That is sufficient because it is this miniscule minority which always determines which way society will move in the long term - inspite of whatever M$ can throw. One must be clear in accepting the FSF philosophy which is about freedom (or changing the ground rules) and the opensource philosophy which is about bussiness (or battle strategy). Longterm social goals aimed at empowering individuals is anthema to any bussiness. Dealing with unpredictable imdividuals does not allow zombification of products and processes, which translates to high costs and withering margins to organistions, which reduces the need for large bussiness organisation. A simple case in point. The neighbourhood tailor. He stitches a shirt which fits you well in a colour u like and with buttons that dont fall off when u sneeze at a very reasonable price. And the van heusen, peter london, Raymond or xyz brand - a few sizes, a few colors, and tons of mind bending ads - god what a incomplete AH u r if u did not wear that complete man outfit guaranteed to blow a tunnel thru ur pocket all the way to ur future bank vault. Or the pepsi, coke, caffiene-cocaine-pesticide laced water. What's wrong with nimbu pani? But then i suppose it's just me not being a zombie. jtd

[OT] Space Tourism Idea

Hello Luggers, Space tourism is now a possible reality with the successfull flight of a private space craft. Many years ago I observed the spinning wheel in the starting video of the TV serial 'Mahabharata'. That gave me an idea of creating artificial gravity in space for the convenience of space travellers. Imagine a spinning wheel having a thick hollow circumference. This hollow circumference will be the rooms of the space building. The actual circumference wall will be the floor of the rooms which will be interconnected in a round circle. As the wheel spins, it creates centrifugal force and this force pushes the people and material against the outer wall (floor). This is artificial gravity. As I don't know the calculations, I am not in a position to know the practical maximum diameter as well as the rotation speed that can be possible in space. Even if we cannot get full gravity, a partial one will be very handy for tourists who may find the process of using the toilet under zero gravity conditions awkward and revolting. This will also keep the body in earth like familiar conditions for longer stay in space. The centering balance of the wheel can be done by having pumps that will pump liquid mercury into hollow chambers all along the circumference, according to the weight imbalance, in a sensing similar to car wheel balancing. Mercury is the heaviest liquid and will occupy minimum volume. The Indian hotel industry should come together to create hotels and recreation centres in space before others get into the race. We will need hotels, cinema halls, reception halls (for space marriages and birthday bashes), gyms, and other sight seeing sites for space tourists. The big guns should get into the act with ISRO. Hi, I have a MSI KM400 motherboard with a VIA KM400 on borad display adapter. The problem is that I can not get the 3-D support working on it. Also the video quality is poor (It is giving me 1024x768 at 16bit). I have googled, been to lot of mailing lists.. all in vain. Even the driver provided by via at http://viaarena.com does not help. I am currently using SuSE 9.1 Pro but have tried it on FC2 as well as Mandrake 10. Does any one else have the same config and has been able to get video working? Please help. TIA. Using USB devices on Linux

Hi, Anybody aware of good tool (preferabaly GUI) for managing USB devices (Hot Plug/Unplug)? I am using PCQLinux 2004 which is based on Fedora 1. I am able to access my USB HDD and CD-ROM. But not sure how to gracefully unplug the device when un-mounting. It will be better if some kind of tool is available to do this and monitor the devices. I have gone through linux-usb guide but its geeky way. Any easy way for doing this? I think the existing drivers for USB controllers are doing well on my box. Only a front end is required. Unable to connect using PPPOE

Hi All I am using debian and try to connect to net using= pppoe and unable to do so. Hello Luggers, Has anyone experienced any viruses in their java enabled GPRS mobile phones? My friend's nokia 6600 (GPRS is active) kept getting picture messages from unknown numbers and today suddenly the entire contacts list is gone blank. Any idea if this has happenned to others too? Helo Linuxers ......need help on this one We have encountered this problem during the installation of Subversion 1.0.1 (CVS) on RH 9. The server also hosts and runs the following :- - Oracle 9.2 - Samba/Apache/FTP/Webmin. Any help in this region is most welcome This specific installation has been carried out by our technical team and they have oracle 9.2 installed on RH9 subversion 1.0.1 installed After changing memory parameters of kernel the svn(subversion) gives segmentation fault error. Tried resetting memory to normal and recompiling svn. No luck. pppoe in Thane

Hello People! I know this topic was raised here a couple of months ago, but since it didn't have enough information, I'd like to try again. NOTE: You don't really have to be using a debian machine to put in your ten cents (or in this case, ten paise, which sadly no one cares to even look at these days). Does anybody have any idea whatsoever, about this cable operator who went by the name of Sachinet in Thane. Well, if you do, you probably also know that they closed shop recently. The folks who took over, run a pppoe sever that I've had no luck getting connected to. I was trying to help a friend there set up a Debian Woody box from a netinst minimal cd. Since, I started off with setting up a win xp partition first, I could go in there and download the right package (a stable pppoe package from debian, snd yes it works from win xp). But, using it has been frustrating since the server sends back authentication error messages. By the way, this is my first time finishing a debian installation with a pppoe connection. I guess what I need from anyone out there is help identifying the kind of server these guys are running and possibly how to connect correctly to it (username format, etc). Hey Sanjay, I have Vmware 4.0.0. build 4460 and the help= files say that the supported Guest OS is only upti RH 8.0 I h= ave RH 9.0 with a 2.6.7 kernel and the 2.4.20 kernel, but still i get a few= errors while booting. Some Font file error in Suse 9.1

Dear Friends, Has anyone installed Suse 9.1 DE? I installed the iso downloaded from the site, its getting installed properly and works perfectly fine, except after 2 or 3 login sessions, when u login it comes back to the same login post. i have reinsalled the os thrice :( , but no luck. When i got in into the fail safe mode from grub, logged in as root and tried startx it gave me these lines. Could not init font path element /usr/x11r6/lib/x11/fonts/local, removing from list! Could not init font path element /usr/x11r6/lib/x11/fonts/CID, removing from list! Waiting for x server to shutdown Regards Dhananjay

Problem On suse 9.1

mannaged to get my hands on suse9.1 Professional Edition. Great lots of stuff compiled on the cd. But noticed one problem, could not start apache on the system as long as php was up. Hi A customer of mine wanted to install a 260 GB IDE HDD on this GNU/Linux server... He wanted to know if it would work. I told him to check the motherboard manual to confirm if the BIOS would support it. The kernel version is 2.2 (RH9) using ext3 file system so I guess it should support a partition size of 2TB.... right? Anyone here on the list tried it as yet? Any tips / advise on what to watch out for before buying the disk? Regards Rishi

Request u to try it on ur systems

Hi all, I have Gentoo 2004.2 system . I have found a bug in the shutdown process(atleast it logically seems to be a bug).I request u all to try it on ur system to check whether it is distro specific or related to kernel so that i can file it in the specific list. Procedure that led to the bug: 1)Booted the gentoo system 2)Logged in as user(non-root) 3)issued startx to start kde3.2.2 4)Logged out of kde.It put me back on terminal prompt 5) executed "su" to become root 6) executed "init 0" to shutdown 7) Last message on terminal "Power down" . Now the next step was something very very unexpected 8) Pressed "Enter".It brought me to command prompt as root. 9)executing "ls" gave me a directory listing of the root directory 10) Executed "man man".This command did not execute. I don't understand how did the command prompt appear and how did the "ls" command got executed when I had shutdown my system. Hi Please find two problems, any help will be appreciated. 1)----- If I don't touch any key or mouse for 10-15 minutes my Linux monitor's displays goes off and when I touch either of the device it comes again. I know its the facility to save unnecessary wastage of power. But I don't know how to disable it. 2)----- If Qmail is configured for gold.com as localdomain then any mail to ExistUser(a)gold.com is delivered to the user properly but NonExistUser(a)gold.com is bounced back immediately. How to forward NonExistUser's email to the gold.com existing on the internet. Second thing is when I fetch messages from gold.com to my local machine by fetchmail command it shows delivery to local users but messages don't appear in ./Maildir.
