The times we are living in, technology is developing at such a rapid pace and affecting so many aspects and it raises a lot of issues... Most people do not have the time to even become aware of the issues involved, but that does not mean that it stops affecting their lives..It is just that they remain unaware of it.. In the case of computing, this has happened and almost everyone on this list is aware about it...and the question that has come up is- Is open source and free software the right way to do computing..What is so wrong about closed source? In the case of DVD encoding where private studios decided in order to protect their business.. they simply divided the world into regions with numbers 1,2 3,4..And they encoded DVDs so that dvd sold for Region 1 would not play in another...and so on...What a mess they made..This is clearly a case of bad use of technology and should be challenged..and as it happened with the hacker who wrote the code so that he could simply play the dvd. ..the judge upheld correctly his right to do so. I bring this up as an example. Now marketing people who work for private business go to any extent, with huge resources. They create the wrong impression on peoples minds. Therefore it is indeed important that wherever and in whatever way one can, one shares the knowledge about the principles that form the basis of this OS.. Give back to society what you take..in whatever way you can... It is a big issue of our time and we should not ignore it. Just putting in my two words... I think you have got it all wrong as far as film animation goes and the use of linux....I wont have the time to give you all the details...reading on the net you can come to your own conclusions..starting with http://linuxmovies.sourceforge.net/ Ditto for The Gimp.... It would be more helpful if you gave pointers for the right installation..By now I have learnt that using a serial port graphics tablet would not be a problem in gnu/linux . USB support is not too good at the moment... So for now I will not be responding any further lest we deviate and get into these basic discussions.....Thank you.... hello, a friend had a problem. the following is the problem description as per him. ********************************* hello all, we have LDAP server running properly, after that we have installed convert-ANS1-0.18.tar.gz and perl-ldap-0.31.tar.gz for getting the perldap modules in perl. after installation, the warning displayed is "build incomplete" when we run a perl script to connect the LDAp server we are having an error that says... Objectives of the Workshop: 1. To bring forth the efforts on Localisation made so far on free software platform: Computing, not just interface, fonts and printing. 2. Gnu/Linux and graphics.. The GIMP is as good as any graphics software on other OSs. I am sure there are many graphics artists working on Linux. There has been much development in film animation industry on the Linux platform..but it is very high end..and closed ..as the developers were working for specific studios. Linux is simply too good an OS...and no matter what you do with computers- even pure graphics- it should logically be the platform of choice. Bootlaoders confusion

Hi I have successfully installed Slackware 9.1 on an ext2 partition and am running fluxbox. I have the following questions I always boot through LOADLIN and and afraid to boot through LILO. I have prepared a boot floppy of slackware 9.1 and boot through this by manually giving the command mount root=/dev/hda8 My Pc config is as follows Celeron 500 64mb RAM 40G HDD 52x cdrom ASUS 1.44 FDD intel i810 chipset Win 98 and office 97 and other win software on C and D drive My problems 1. I have read that LILO writes the MBR and messing this up will also mess up my windows (I require Windows for other members of my family) 2. Is there an option for LILO and Loadlin which is safe (heard of GRUB) 3. I have worked with slackware for a year or so and I want to try out other distros like debian/knoppix/Fedora. Whether these distros have a option of booting without LILO?. PC does not support booting thru CD Thanks and Regards Ninad Bapat

[OT] ssh Port Forwarding Qs

Hi, I need to write an application that enables ssh tunneling for various ports. (Using openssl or any other library) The steps involved are :- 1. Open a ssh session (conection ?) 2. Authenticate etc etc 3. wait for a user to enter a port number. 4. Enable port forwarding on the specified local / remort port Now I want to do steps 3&4 on the same session, rather than open new ssh connections everytime. Is this possible ? I tried searching the net, but nowhere did I find any thing that tells me that I can do port forwarding after establishing an ssh connection. Any ideas if this is possible ? I have been looking at various library docs till now, and they dont explain if its possible to do this. I am still trying to find some good docs on ssh that explain the protocol in a simple manner. I am thinking of buying a graphics tablet- like the WACOM Graphire 3. I searched and it seems the wacom graphics tablet is supported at the kernel level in gnu/linux. Since I am not an expert, more of a simple user who likes to work in gnu/linux in spite of the odds that now and then come up, I would like to know if anyone here has ever installed or used such a device in linux. If so, I would like to discuss this further... Graphics tablet- basically an input device..where you have a touchpad and a pen/stylus and the motions are replicated on the screen... Thank you all. Devdas Bhagat has understood my need and the method proposed seems the way I could do it. Menwhile further exploration on the net led me to a nifty program called Thumbnail printer by Andreas Meinl ( http://www.andreasmeinl.de ). It is under the GPL. Its graphical and simply point the directory to it- it takes the images and arranges them into printable pages. I think I have a simple requirement and am unaware of the right tool for it. Would be obliged if someone points out... I have a directory of say 300 small images ( as gif files). Now I want to convert this into a series of HTML pages. Is there an automated way to do it? Right now I am using Openoffice and its Gallery feature to drag-n-drop to create individual pages which I can then print. Automated would help, because if I modify these or add new images to the gif series, I can quickly create an updated HTML version for printing... Hello Everybody, One of our java applications is giving some problems while communicating with ESMTP server. Some packets are getting lost and as a result messages are not sent or getting delayed. ESMTP is running on linux. Can neone give some pointers/links to ESMTP related docs ?? I would like to know the difference between SMTP and ESMTP. I googled but couldnt get much info. I'm bringing up this issue again because I see a trend here. What exactly do different quoting methods achieve? [quoting is the process of including the original message in your reply with some form of "quote" character, like > for example marking the text as quoted, and a reply lead in like "On someday, someone said:"] When replying to a mail, one has several options, viz. - don't quote the original - quote the original with the reply at the top - quote the original with the reply at the bottom - quote the original with the reply interleaved with the original we shall call these "unquoted", "top posted", "bottom posted" and "interleave posted" respectively. Let's look at the effect each of these has on persons entering late into the conversational thread, casual readers, and those who browse through the mailing list archives, and search engine to find results. * Unquoted replies This definitely is the most space efficient in that it includes 0 unoriginal bytes. On the downside however, there is also a very high percentage loss of context (100% if the original mail had a stupid subject line like "Help me!"). What this means is that anyone entering the conversational thread late - in this case even one mail into the conversation, has very little idea of what's going on. Answers are no use without the right questions to go with them. Mailers can aid in creating context for the user through threading based on the In-Reply-To mail header. The problem with this is that it requires that anyone who wants to read the thread should have all messages in the thread in his mailbox. People joining in late will not have all messages, they will only have the latest one. It should be clear that, unless the subject line is all the context that's required, unquoted replies are very rarely a good idea. * Top posted replies It is common practice, and, in many cases, a good idea, to top post when replying to one-to-one personal or business mails. In these cases, the conversation is between two persons, and both have complete knowledge of all mails that have been exchanged between them. In such a scenario, unquoted replies would be a good option. The average business/personal email user, however, receives a large quantity of email every day, and it may not always be possible to keep track of all conversational threads. Including context at the bottom for reference is therefore necessary. This works only with one-to-one mails however. The moment we move to a mailing list/large group of recipients, this becomes infeasible. It has been noticed that everyone who quotes the original below their reply quotes it in entirety. After having been through three levels of top posting, the size of the mail increases heavily with less than 20% original content (original content is that content created by the current composer). Furthermore, the mail also gets cluttered with several long signatures which add no information to the thread. It seems that when the original is below the reply, care is not taken to check the nature of the content quoted. A second problem with top posting occurs when people join the thread late. Even though context is included in the mail, it is included in reverse order, which means that the mail needs to be read from the bottom up. This is not normal, since most people read from the top down. As a result, one needs to store context in ones mind while reading downwards. Some of the worst cases of top posting are when people reply to a very long thread with a one line or even a one word answer, eg, "Thank you", "Yes, me too", etc. Most people wouldn't delete the entire thread from below simply because they do not know how long it is - it would be completely hidden below the bottom boundary of their viewing area (window). * Bottom posted replies Replies posted completely at the bottom are only useful when the original mail is only a few lines long. Anything longer than that, and the reply ends up going below the initially visible area of the screen - for normal 80x25 screens/windows, requiring the user to scroll before he can read the reply. The problem is further compounded when signatures are included in the quoted text. At times it isn't clear whether a reply to the mail exists, or whether the mail was simply forwarded completely quoted. As with top posting, one liner replies are very hard to find at the bottom of a long (>15 lines) message. A variation of this form of quoting is where the reply is included below the message, while all signatures are left below the reply. This serves the added purpose of increasing the cruft at the bottom of the thread. * Interleave posted replies In this case, replies are interleaved with the original message, so for instance, a message that contains three points, would have the reply split into three portions, each included immediately after the relevant point. In this case, the person replying must take the effort to separate out points, deleting irrelevant lines, and in some cases summarising ideas. It is perhaps for this reason that most people choose not to employ this method. On the plus side, anyone joining the thread late, or reading a single message on the mailing list archives will have the entire thread in front of him, with each question answered immediately below. Trimming of content helps keep the signal to noise ratio (S/N) high. Interleaving is most useful when used in conjunction with trimming of content and summarisation. The variation found with bottom posted replies is also found with interleaved replies, and reduces the S/N ratio somewhat. * Closing remarks This article isn't meant to tell people what quoting style they should use, but merely to state the pros and cons (according to me at least) of each method. You may choose for yourself. I've tried to cover all points that have been brought up in the past. If I've missed anything out, feel free to add to this. I have not, however, gone deeply into the details, but the reader may refer to the list of links later on in this message. Also note that this is *not* a poll. blocking serial port

Hi, I am new to the group and this is my first post. I have written a serial program..that communicates with a modbus device on the modbus protocol. this code is at the backend of a CGI script. I would like to block the serial port, whenever every fork of the scrip is using it. in short i wud like to serialize the requests on the serial port. i read abt the file-lock, but i am not sure if that will put the process that cud not get the port to sleep until it is free. Is there some way of doing this with the help of any system calls, or some parameters to open (which wud block) the device file? Sun Server is not working

Hi All, My sun server is not working properly. Actually our electrician reomoved power cord from UPS saturday evening by mistake. Today when I connect the power cord & put it on. I can ping to sun server but not able to telnet,ssh or rlogin etc. Even my sun rays (dump terminals are not working.) I am using Sun Fire V100 with 8 Sun Rays. NFS Related issue

We have shared /export1 on Solaris 8 machine. We usully mount some of dir from export1 onto all Redhat linux machines. For a only one machine we have problem related to nfs. After we mount the directory,if we give 'ls' , the linux machine just hangs!! How could i traceout the communication happening b/w linux client and solaris server,when i issue 'ls' on client side !! if i give 'ls' on a nfs mounted directory -Dilip

Hello, You can try one thing.First use dd command in linux and create a backup of your current MBR on a floppy/CD,atleast it allows you to boot into some OSs if not all.Put that backup(which should be a single file of 512 bytes) on hda1,so that you can use it with your boot.ini file later. Then you can boot into DOS using a startup floppy or CD and revert the MBR using 'fdisk /mbr'.I think this will bring back the contents of the MBR (most probably the NTLDR) which were there before GRUB overwrote ur MBR.Then you will be able to boot into XP,2K,98 as before.After getting NTLDR alright,then just add an entry to your boot.ini with the backup file as the target..If it works well then you'll be able to go into GRUB thru the Windows boot menu. *The crucial thing is to use the dd command neatly. I think it will be 'dd if=/dev/hda1 of=/mnt/win_c/backup.mbr bs=512 count=1' assuming that hda1 is mounted as win_c Get it verified.* Hope this helps.

As Philip suggests, I the most sensible thing would be to use the Win2K boot loader. Here's the general way you can rescue your setup. 1) First of all boot into each Linux distro and install its boot loader to the first sector of its own partition. i.e. boot into debian and install grub/lilo to the boot sector of /dev/hda8 and similarly for RH9 to /dev/hda9. I use LILO myself so I can't give you instructions for grub - use the manual. Make a boot floppy for each on the safe side as well. 2) After both the boot loaders for the Linux distros are installed, while still in Linux, copy the first sector of each to a file like so: dd if=/dev/hda8 of=woody.img bs=512,count=1 dd if=/dev/hda9 of=rh9.img bs=512,count=1 and then move these two *.img files to C: 3) Now boot off the Win2K/XP install CD and go to the recovery mode console. Here you can log in as administrator and get a limited shell. Use the commands fixmbr (& fixboot if necessary). This will overwrite grub in the MBR with the Win2K boot loader and automatically make entries for Win98, Win2K & WinXP. 4) Now you should be able to boot into any of the versions of Windows and edit the C:\BOOT.INI file to add entries for Linux like so: C:\RH9.IMG="Linux RedHat 9.0" C:\WOODY.IMG="Linux Debian Woody" (note that the file is hidden/system etc. so unhide it first) That's it - all 5 OSs should now boot ok. tar withing find acts strangly !!

Hi , I have 3 file system. / , /usr and /var. I'm trying to backup them using tar command like this : find / -xdev -exec tar cvf root.tar {} \; According to above commond , since i have mentioned '-xdev' for find, find should list files and dir related to '/' file system only. If i try only " find / -xdev" , this list files and dir as expected.That is it lists only files within '/' File system. But when i use tar within find,i'm getting /usr and /var tared too !! Hello linuxers, I have 7 partitions on my 40 gb hdd.Its structure is as follows hda1 windows 98 primary partition hda3 windows XP Extended Logical part hda4 windows 2000 server Extended Logical part hda5 windows partition Extended Logical part hda8 debian woody 3 hda9 Redhat linux 9 hda12 swap Now my problem is that i have installed windows 98 first then win xp then windows 2000 with boot options of all three.I installed debian woody 3 on hda8 and then redhat linux 9 on hda9.Now after installing redhat linux 9 i cant boot in to winxp/win2000.I can boot into win98/redhat linux/debian.During installation i have installed grub as my boot loader and added all the required partions for booting the windows os.Please provide some solution to this so i can boot in to any os through boot menu(grub). Hi All: I am working on securing sendmail server and facing some problem. Below are more details about my server setup and configuration. I am using Red Hat Linux distro with sendmail version 8.12.10. On sendmail server, I had turn on LOGIN and PLAIN authentication mechanism, so that people who are using outlook express or Mozilla can successfully able to authenticate and able to send mail using my sendmail SMTP. I am having no problem at all with sendmail everything is working fine. My users are able to successfully authenticate and send and receive mail using my SMTP / POP3. Now, I have two users named Jack and Jill Jack has configured his outlook express with his profile and email id as jack(a)mydomain.com. While specifying SMTP server he has selected option "My Server requires Authentication " Now he creates a mail and tries to send it. He is prompted to specify user id and password for authenticating at my SMTP server. He puts his userid - jack and his password - ****. And mail is successfully delivered. The restriction I want to put in sendmail is as below. ===================================== Jack creates another mail and tries to send it. Again he is prompted to specify user id and password for authenticating at my SMTP server. Now this time he puts jill's userid and jill's password- ****. The SMTP server authenticates and accepts mail delivery. I don't want to allow jack(a)mydomain.com user to use authentication credential of any other user and able to delivery mail. I must check that if the username, which is being authenticated, is jack then the email address must contain jacks (ie jack(a)mydomain.com). Else don't accept mail delivery. ================== when I opened sendmail.cf I found something like this. Hi everyone I am Salil, presently in Philadelphia but originally from Mumbai. I am a complete newbie to Linux. I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop 1100 with windows XP as the OS. I wish to install Linux on it but keep XP. I do not have a floopy drive on my computer. Is it possible to install Linux without having to uninstall XP? What is the best way to proceed? The reason I don't want to uninstall XP is that certain hardware (Wireless LAN Adapter - TrueMobile 1300 802.11g made by Broadcomm) and power management features are not supported on Linux platform. Networking in VMware....

Dear Friends, Last week I tried the VMware Workstation 4 software on Windows XP ( Appologies to all Microsoft Haters...). I created a virtual machine with a network adapter and loaded RedHat Linux 9 on it. But I cannot configure Networking to connect My Host PC (Win XP) with the virtual Linux machine. I tried Bridge Networking and also Host-Only Networking Options but Nothing seems to work. The linuxVirtual Machine configures the NIC perfectly. I gave it a static IP address which works but with DHCP it does not get any IP address ( No link present....). Also with static IP address it does not ping to my Host PC. I read the VMware manual but found no detailed explaination of the networking Part. I also have VMware WS 4 for Linux/UNIX Host but it does not install correctly on RedHat Linux 9, maybe the installer package is corrupt... It would be nice if someone can give me any pointers or details of how exactly networking is configured in VMware WS 4 between a virtual machine and a physical machine. SAMBA Query

Hi All We have Win2000 as PDC doing authentication of all our network users and we wish to replace it with Samba server or any other alternative which will do the similar job. Now I have installed Samba server but I am facing the following problems a) Client authentication is not happening at the startup. But we browse the network neighbourhood and double click on the Samba it is accepting the login name & password. What I need is that at startup client is authenticated by the Samba server itself. b) Samba server networks runs only as WORKGROUP and not like DOMAIN Can anybody guide me to FAQ or Tutorial or some alternative where I could nearly replicate my existing Win2000 server so I can dump it as soon as possible. Hello everyone, Let me introduce myself as the founder of http://linux.mejokj.com. I have been using and promoting linux for years . I recently came to Mumbai and one of the first things I did here was to join the linux users group , Mumbai. But when I searched on net, I found to linux users groups - 1) Mumbai_GNULinux(a)yahoogroups.com , 2) linuxers(a)mm.ilug-bom.org.in. Is there any different between the above two groups? I subscribed to both the mailing lists and has been reading all the mails send by other members. The Mumbai Gnu Linux group has got around 200 members(yahoo says so) but I am not sure how many of them are really active. I am unaware of the number of members in ILUG mumbai. Anyway their site http://www.ilug-bom.org.in/ is completely unmaintained and not updated frequently. The bottom line here is that - the linux users of mumbai are not organised(Correct me if I am wrong). I couldn't understand what's the need for two different groups for members having the same interest. Can't both the groups merge and become one big, strong, active group? UNITY IS STRENGTH. ALWAYS! I would request all the members of both the groups to express their opinion about this. I am sure that we can do a lot more things together then we are doing right now, and in a much better way. What I have written in this mail is my personal opinion. If what I have written here is completely wrong or if there's something that I shouldn't have written, I apologize! In cross cables, 1&3 and 2&6 switch places in one end of the cable. Setting up home network -- help needed

Hi people, I have a two PCs & am planning to setup a home network. Those who have done this thing before, can you please give be pointers to required resources etc ? Basically the config wud be: the GNU/Linux machine connected to Internet (via cable), running firewall/proxy/ web server etc; and a Windows machine running browser, chat etc apps (connecting through GNU/Linux machine) I'm looking for info about following : 1. vsftp problem

hello everyone, i m am planning to host ftp server . i m using vsftp , i have my shared directory at /var/ftp/pub/songs. This songs dir is nothin but a sym link to a songs dir on my vfat partition. Problem is : while accessing the songs dir , i get this error "550 connot change directoy". But , if i login using username and password of a user that has an account on the system - everything works fine. I have tried changing access parameters but nothin seems to work. currently the songs dir on my vfat has following access parameters: owner root RWX group root RX other RX. pls help me out of this. thanx. - Mrudul.

Hi, I would like to do the Redhat-8.0 installation remotely(since the machine don't have CDROM) I have done several Redhat-7.x remote installations using NFS method. I created "bootnet.img " # dd if=/mnt/cdrom/images/bootnet.img of=/dev/fd0 bs=512 When i boot machine from this floppy the installation stops showing "The Second stage of install which you have selected does not match the boot disk your using..." I booted from the rescue disk, unmounted the home partition, and using the parted program on the HD, shrank that partition. Now I'll be able to load another distro on the comp and resize either whenever I wish to. Just posted this since it might be useful to others too. Hi All, Do we have any utility/software in Linux which works like Postmaster in Windows. i.e. the software should be able to take a dump of all the incoming mails and then distribute them locally. All the e-mail accounts in the n/w would be configured in this software. hi i am a newbie. i installed kernel 2.6 on my RH9 m/c by compiling it from the source code given with LIFY. and instuctions in DIGIT. Repartioning the HD

Hello, I have RH 8 installed on 10GBs and my home directory on 5GBs. The rest is taken up by windows. I want to repartition the drive so that I get space from my root and home partitions, leaving the windows partitions intact. I would prefer to use GNUParted, since it seems to be the easiest, but when i tried to resize the home partition, it says that the partition is in use, resize aborted. This happened even when I tried to do it while logged in as root. I tried to make a 'Parted' bootdisk, but could'nt manage to. Could anyone help me with this? I'd really like to try out and play with other distros too, and besides, I could use the extra distro to see if various progs and stuff work and i'm using them right(like trying to install a new window manager without messing up the primary system). Hi guyz, I stay at mumbai and my cable operator has given me a 64Kbps connection. I use a 24Online client to login. I have dual-booted my system with Red Hat Linux 9. When I contacted him about using his connection in Linux he said that I could use it either in Linux or Windows. So I searched around the net for help when I came upon this mailing list. I have searched the archives and found that I should be using 'linc'. I have downloaded the i386 RPM. But I dont know how to configure it or use it. I am a newbie :). So I was wondering if someone had instructions about using this utility. IOCTL related query

Hi ppl, I am facing a issue in IOCTL calls. IOCTL accepts user space data and gives it to kernel space, for a kernel module's execution. There appears to be a limit of 4096 bytes which can be copied from user space to kernel space in this IOCTL call. I would like to increase this limit of 4096 bytes. If anyone has faced this problem then kindly let me know how does one go about solving it. Awaiting help, Ashutosh.

Implementation of Unicode Porting For Marathi using Free Software in a Maharashtra Govt Department Background Over the decade and a half in the past, indian IT industry driven by Central govt efforts and lead by C-DAC, NCST , IIT kanpur and other instituions, has done a commendable job of introducing local scripts on DOS and Windows platforms etc. So long as the computers were confined to typing and printing , and that too largely within the confines of an office or an enterprise, the ad-hoc i.e. Non-standard approaches followed were infact an unexpected delight! However now that the demands for indian language working are for computing ( which includes searching and sorting) , for communication across networks and across platforms and across applications the non-standard approaches are a problem. On top of it , due to globalisation , there is need for multilingual documents i,e a document simultaneously containing many languages including chinese/japanese and european etc . The need to create webpages with such multilingual content with interactions leaves very little scope o f choice other than unicode. Thus the old font-encoded content will simply not do. However many governement organisations , with progressive bureacrats wanting to change over to this modern format are blocked in the path by the huge legacy of documents in older formats. Hence the capability to transform the old content to unicode is a crucial requrement. Those who want to convert to use of Opensource software technologies are posed witth this problem even more acutely.There is not even that little chance of using old font-encoded content as may be available for the Proporietory software users. This felt need lead us to the project of porting to unicode in Directorate of IT in Maharastra Govt. As is well known , the Govt of Maharashtra is not only a leading state in the field of Finance and industry but also in the field of IT and e-governance. What is the Significance of this project ? This project of converting to unicod is , as far as we know, for the first time that a government body has undertaken to convert to unicode and that too on Free Software. 1.The most important effect of this will be to open the possibility to shift to OpenSource software by the governments or any other corporate body who have accumulated a lot of content in old font-encoded formats. This does not prevent anyone to work with (more recent versions of) proprietory software like Microsoft Windows 2000 onwards. In fact it is a necessary requirement for many of them. 2.The other significant advantage will be that cost of working in indian languages will be reduced drastically. 3.Thirdly all the content(information and data) will be available in sortable and searchable global format which is what unicode enables. This will fulfill a long-term requirement of many departments of IT in many governemnts and Publicsector organsiations. What we have Accomplished Government of Maharastra , being particular about standards, chose the best option of standardising on the government organisation like C-DAC and workind with ISM software and ISFOC fonts. They used the Lotus Word Pro software and Microsoft Word ediors enabled with marathi by ISM and iPlugin of C-DAC. We have converted this Marathi content originally created in various ISFOCfonts of C-DAC ( using ISM and I-Plugin in several proprietory softwares) into unicode based, open type fonts which have been developed and made freely available by us We had to convert the legacy documents into new encoding , integrate the same with existing Database of the Govt.(DJMS =Document Journey management Sysytem) . We worked with one department to start with, i.e. Directorate of IT . We have also installed opesource software i.e OpenOffice 1.1 in some machines and demonstrated its use and trained some people so that all fresh work can begin in unicode now. Task of making the Database metafiles in unicode has also been completed . Underestimation: Initially the department estimated about 1000 files to be converted. However , we have had to deal with about 6700 files , identified and picked out the files that required convesions and converted about 2000 files. For actual work see the table above for work accomplished. File Types and fonts: We converted files with tables 9real painful) and without tables, from Lotus Word Processor, MSWord, Power Point, EXCEL etc and using DV-TT, DVB-TT and DVBW fonts. Font Developed : We have also developed gargi font. Initiated By Dr Nagarjun of Free Software Foundation(India) , right from the beginning (july 2002 ) our personnel developed and now we at indictrans maintain the font.During conversion we came across some deficienciesin the font. See our site for the more complete snapshots of performance of our fonts in all platforms and applications. We have also developed a Gujarati font padmaa (Prof Jitendra Shah's mother's name) We have translated the GUI messages In Marathi and Gujarati , (while modified IndLinux) Hindi . Other Localisations achieved: As linuxers know , we have come out with a live, bootable CD enabled in 4 languages, Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati with Debian GNU/Linux operating system and OpenOffice , Mozilla and other software. This is known s gnubhaaratii and has tutorials embedded in it. See www.indictrans.org for more details. While shutting down in win2k3 my m/c gets poweroff automatically but while in RH 9.0, I have to manually poweroff it after getting halt. Why is it so? any solution for the same? hi, ***KERNEL DEBUGGING i am trying to remote step-by-step debug my kernel using gdb but havent got any pointers/tutorials. I have kernel 2.4.20-8 as HOST and kernel 2.6.1 as TARGET. Basically i know nothing about how to setting up the 2 systems for it. I want both the KGDB and KDB way for doing it. ***COMPILING MODULE IN 2.6.1 I recently compiled 2.6.1 from source and its working fine( except a few glitches ). I am unable to compile my modules. $gcc -Wall -O2 -D__KERNEL__ -DMODULE -I/usr/src/linux-2.6.1/include -c module_name.c i get errors on 'module.h' and many other files. I have the all minimal required tools( since i compiled 2.6.1 ) i.e. gcc and module-init-tools etc... All the above modules compiled well for 2.4.20-8. Even a simple module just having a printk() doesnt get compiled. InputMethod jar files in $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/ext/

Hi, Brahmi(http://brahmi.sf.net) is a multilingual java based editor(for indian languages). indicim.jar(developed by IBM) is a jar file which implements devnagiri input method. Now to run this editor brahmi all I need to do is java -jar Brahmi.jar and i am able to use hindi in it. Brahmi uses indicim.jar which has to be placed in $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/ext/ directory. All jar files placed in $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/ext/ are like extension libraries and is available to be used by any jar file on your machine. If a jar file is not in $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/ext/ then one must include it in CLASSPATH. Now the problem is when I remove indicim.jar from $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/ext and include it in class path it does not work(editor gives error while initiallizing hindi). I am unable to find the reason but i guess it is becuase of the fact that "all jar files in JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/ext/ are trusted while others are not completly trusted". Is it so? Is there any workaround. Actully what i am doing is to make a webpage where in a java applet you will have Brahmi Editor and anyone can visit that page and write anything in hindi and then may be mail it to somebody. It assumes that end-user is non-techie who dont know how to install fonts or how to copy indicim.jar file to $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/ext/. Everything else is working except for I have to place indicim.jar in $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/ext/ for this applet to work. Anybody having any ideas? -- Nilesh Bansal http://www.cse.iitb.ac.in/nilesh/

2.6.1-"kernel panic init not found"

Hi, I installed the 2.6.1 kernel and having problems with initrd. My GRUB.CONF looks like this- <<<truncated>>> title Linux(2.6.1) root (hd0,4) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.1 ro root=LABEL=/ initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.1.img title RedHat Linux(2.4.20-8) root (hd0,4) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.20-8 ro root=LABEL=/ initrd /boot/initrd-2.4.20-8.img <<<truncated>>> 2.4.20-8 is the kernel installed by RH 9.0 and works fine. 2.6.1 is what i compiled from source and gives me problem with initrd saying - "kernel panic: no init found. try passing init= option to kernel" I understand that there is no problem with the kernel but with the initrd file. Linux is on /dev/hda5 with EXT3 fs and has NO BOOT partition. In 2.4.20-8 i can see EXT3 loading as a module while booting, but in 2.6 EXT3 loading fails with this - "mount: error 19 on loading ext3" _________________________________ When i remove the initrd line from GRUB.CONF i.e. - <<<truncated>>> title Linux(2.6.1) root (hd0,4) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.1 ro root=LABEL=/ title RedHat Linux(2.4.20-8) root (hd0,4) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.20-8 ro root=LABEL=/ initrd /boot/initrd-2.4.20-8.img <<<truncated>>> 2.6.1 loads completely without the module support...so i see that /dev/hda5 is mounted as EXT2 and not EXT3. Now, after 2.6.1 is loaded, i try this- #depmod which tells me that EXT3 requires JBD( which is also a MODULE and NOT BUILT-IN ). After manually 'insmod jbd.ko' and 'insmod ext3.ko', EXT3 module loads succesfully. dynamic linking problems

Hi Guys, I am facing a weird problem. I upgraded my glibc to 2.3.2 using rpm (Intel-Redhat-8). But just after upgrading glibc-utils (i.e. memusage, memusagestat, pcprofiledump, xtrace, libmemusage.so, libpcprofile.so), all programs using threads have started giving problems. Programs were working fine before upgrading this package. I can say this, because rpm started giving error immediately after this upgradation. All other glibc packages are already upgraded. Programs using threads are giving following error: anjuta: /lib/libpthread.so.0: version `GLIBC_2.3.2' not found (required by /lib/librt.so.1) rpm: /lib/libpthread.so.0: version `GLIBC_2.3.2' not found (required by /lib/librt.so.1) Is any of the programs listed in glibc-util used in resolving libraries version? Please help me if anybody has come across this problem before. spurios error

I tried working on this spurios error ( spurious 8259A interrupt: IRQ7 ) that kept creeping up when i booted. Nothing seems to help. I was also just told to ignore the error since it wasnt anything trivial. However, I am not too sure if this is related but, whenever I do major transfers to this box, it ends up hanging. This is a pretty new machine with tons of resources, and seeing it just crash without anything else in the logs to point elsewhere is something rather odd. Can help me diagnose this issue, I really cant have this go down on me on critical times... Thanks, Satish

rpm segfaulting after glibc upgrade

Hi guys, We have an Intel P-4 machine running Redhat 8. Since some packages don't get compiled without glibc 2.3, we decided to upgrade glibc from 2.2.93 to 2.3.2-11.9. We downloaded source rpm from redhat and compiled it on our machine. It created rpms for i386 architecture. We could upgrade glibc-common and glibc without any problem ( we took the backup of /lib before upgradation). But rpm gives segmentation fault now whenever we try to upgrade or install any package. All other programs seem to be working fine with new glibc. As it seems, rpm-4.1-1.06 is incompatible with glibc 2.3 and should be upgraded before upgrading glibc. But as we have already done the mistake, please suggest us how can we get rpm working, so that we can upgrade rpm before glibc. Hi, A collegue of mine on the ILUG Bom list alerted me to this thread. I am working with eSys in Singapore, and am "responsible" for the OS you see. The ePC range was launched in Oct 2002, and has undergone changes in positioning. At that time, as Prakash said, we were working with Via in producing a low-cost PC. That was the product brief my team had, and that is what we delivered. The idea was to reduce cost, reduce cost, reduce cost. As prices for components fell, and as we increased our volumes, it became easier to stay under the 10k barrier, but also provide some performance. The machines you see advertised are our "3rd generation", and feature more RAM and faster CPUs. We have convinced Intel that India has volume, and they have supported us with lower pricing. All hardware is Linux compatible, and we bundle a Debian-based internally-developed OS. It is Debian-based, so you can modify sources.list, apt-get, and overwrite our Logo ;-) It is Linux-based, so you can pop in a Mandrake, or PCQ9.0, and know that it will work. Because GNU/Linux systems are not written by MS guys who simply execute any file just because it pretended its content-type to be an audio file. In my opinion MS always had policy to make system more user-friendly(trying to auto-play a sound file for user) at cost of security(and executing exe instead). This bug and so many other bugs are so obvious(assuming MS has good developers!) that sometimes I feel they are kept on purpose, so that they can ask user to upgrade to their new OS/apps claiming to be MORE safe. Hi can any1 let me know some mailscanners in qmail. i hv chked with qmailscanner (it does not clean the msg) and qscan (cannot reattach the MIME part) and amavis takes a lot of resources.Also MailScanner it seems doesnt hv a qmail support. pls name some, other than these.C based scanners will be preferable. Try out Mandrake Linux. Hi, Need some advise if I'm on the wrong path. GOAL: Backup data (/home and /volx) , Re-format a GNU/Linux system and Re-install fresh from scratch. But I do not want to recreate the users and passwords... This is that I'm planning to do after restoring the /home folder. 1. Overwrite the following files from the old hard disk /etc/passwd /etc/shadow /etc/group /etc/gshadow 2. Reset ownership of files and folders since they may not match. Sample script: This could be addressed by running a for loop: -------------------- -------------------- -------------------- USERS=`awk -F: '{print $1}' /etc/passwd` for USER in $USERS ; do chown -R $USER /home/$USER chown $USER /var/spool/mail/$USER done -------------------- -------------------- -------------------- I have created a lot of groups folder in a folder called /vol1 and /vol2 -------------------- -------------------- -------------------- GROUPS=`awk -F: '{print $1}' /etc/group` for GROUP in $GROUPS ; do chown -R :$GROUP /vol?/$GROUP done -------------------- -------------------- -------------------- Any comments on this approach being good / bad or flawed? [OT] Diploma in Embedded Systems by CMC

Hi there, I read an advertisement by CMC and Thakur Institute of Career Advancement about a 3 month course in Embedded Systems. ( Fees, 40K ) The course is a Diploma in Embedded Systems and course contents are : 1. Foundation Module, comprising of Advanced C and its Data Structures 2. Programming of Microprocessors 3.Programming of Microcontrollers 4Digital Signal Processing 5. RTOS ( Two industry standard versions) 6. Project I have worked on these things during college( B.E. Electronics ) (except for RTOS). So i am looking at this from a certification point of view. currently i am working in VC++ on non-embedded systems and just dont want to really continue like this. any thoughts on this ? Let this go out for all those faint hearted or still full of doubts about the future of computing ever coming out of a monopoly...(´monosoft´)....I installed Linux on my home PC without any ¨technical help¨...just by downloading the software...and I am using it happily for 6 months now. And now I cannot think of ever using the earlier all pervasive OS, simply because this is so good. This led my to the next step- linux on my laptop. While on my PC, I still have the Windows 2000 as a dual boot option that I seldom use, my laptop is LInux-only. All thru the ¨windows¨ years I was so dependent on my ¨support¨ person, the local assembler for software re-installs also. Now with Linux, I can do everything myself. It is a great feeling. SO who says Linux is difficult? It may have been five years ago. Now with graphical systems in place and some incredible installers available..it is a breeze. I say this as a Desktop user. My needs are the common ones..I have some superb applications for those..in every way better than their windows equivalents....For all documents, I use Openoffice.org..for instant messaging I use Gaim..for playing DVD/VCD there is Xine..for audio there is XMMS...and Mozilla Firebird is a terrific browser, way out of the competition. SO what is left? Yes, I occassionally use a palmtop computer..and it syncs easily with J-pilot. No doubt now that linux will be the system of choice for desktops also...it is a matter of time. Why do Viruses not infect GNU/Linux PCs?

Hi I wanted to trigger a conversation here on why Viruses infect Windows PCs and not GNU/Linux systems, Dr. Nagarjuna explained the concept of a file in a posix file system is never set with execute permissions by default and that's why a GNU/Linux system cannot get infected with a Virus. The only way a program (virus) could infect the system would be is if a user actually saved an attachment to disk, then did a 'chmod 755 attachment' and then executed it by either double clicking it or ./attachment... Thus the user would have to be really dumb to infect his computer. ;-) Anyone care to comment or add to this? All thoughts are most welcome since I am keen on the education more than anything. Also I'm also wondering if I could be mistaken and that there are potentially problems / vulnerabilities on a GNU/Linux system... Regards Rishi
