Hi all, There is one situation...imagine a intranet which is to be hooked up to internet through a proxy server. do you know any intelligent proxy server that will allow dynamic bandwidth allocation with user starvation prevention....to talk in simple terms... 1. i should be able to allocate max bandwidth usage to a user in peak traffic time 2. when traffic is not present, this limit can be exccedded normally this will happen, i mean, if there is only one user, he would enjoy faster speed. but as the users add up, the speed slows down drastically. and the operation is not deterministic...i cannot guarantee that a particular user is limited using a max bandwidth qouta any clues/links..??? links to HOWTOs would be great.. Well, If u can burn u're CD while listen to music and also convert mpeg to Divx and surfing the NET too,u can call a celeron a processor. On My Athlon 1800+ machine thses tasks r trivial. So may be u shud try all these and then rethink. in my office, i connect to a RedHat gnu/linux m/c through telnet (actually through a software called "putty", which uses telnet as the underlying communication protocol). the initial welcome/login screen shows the following msg: Red Hat Linux release 7.2 (Enigma) ^^^ Kernel 2.4.7-10 on an i686 but the contents of "/proc/version" are: Linux version 2.4.7-10 (<some email id>) (gcc version 2.96 20000731) (Red Hat Linux 7.1 2.96-98) #<today's date> ^^^ any convincing explanation to the above weirdity, would be greatly appreciated. also, i have a small question, which is related to the above query (actually, it might solve the above absurdity ;-) ) does the file "/proc/version" change (or is updated) at every reboot (or some other convinient time interval). i.e. if i change the entry in "/proc/version" to make it RHL 7.2, will it stay like that forever (or until someone changes it), or will it get rectified at the next reboot? also where does the display shown at login time come from? thanks for all the help!

Hi The contents of the /proc/version file is not actually wierd it looks almost same as of urs on all systems of Red Hat Linux. This file gives you the version of Linux Kernel, GCC, the version of RedHat Linux installed in your system and dthat email id is of the development team of RedHat Linux so you can email the bugs to them. The display message that you see at the time of login comes from the /etc/issue and /etc/issue.net files. If your logging in through the local terminal in text mode just change the /etc/issue file to what ever you want and that will be displayed everytime you try to login. If you are trying login remotely using telnet or SSH just change the /etc/issue.net file and it will show you the message that you want at the time of login. these changes are permanent and needs to be done only once. Hi all, i have got a server having a 40 GB seagate Harddisk. When i tried to install Red Hat 7.2/8.0 on it , it got stuck at the time of partitioning. it display this error:- "an error has occurred-no valid devices were found on which to create new filesystems.Please check your hardware for the cause of this problem". As i think it will due to that this fresh machine doesn't have SCSi Dreiver. Can anybody help me. Hi Dipali, If you have forgot the root password for ur system then its a little bit of head ache but dont worry you can still get to change the new password. If you are using RedHat Linux then just do the following steps. I hope that you have a rescue boot disk created at the time of installation or atleast have the RedHat installation CDs. Boot through the CD or floppy drive and at the boot prompt type linux single and press enter this will take you to single user mode from where you can change the root password to a new one and reboot the system and log in to your root account as usual. If you are using LILO as your boot loader then simply type linux single at the boot prompt and the rest will be same. I hope this fixes ur prob. I have installed knoppix 3.2 (I know 3.3 is available) I have done apt-get update and some 90 programs have been installed or upgraded. I now have kde 3.1.4. My only problem (at present) is that the screen resolution is 800x600 and I can get 1024x768 in redhat 9 as well as slackware 9 on the same box. hi , i am plannig to buy a new PC, and have problems reagarding the selection of processor. I want a AMD Athalon XP( 1.8Ghz) processor(with 256MB DDRAM) but there have been rumours that the processor gets heated up and could hang the system. My room is not well ventilated, only cooling source is Fan. In such a case would AMD give me a problem? Has anyone worked with XP series processors and how was your experience? The machine would be used solely for Linux( thats why I want to get a cheap processor ). Which MotherBoard is the best buy for AMD Athalon XP 1800 ? What i read form 'Digit' was, MSI KT4 Ultra(with VIA KT400 chipset) motherboard works great with AMD Athalon XP 2600. Seems like the SNR on the list is increasing all over again. People top-post when replying, and to top that [sic], they write a two liner after quoting an entire previous mail, sometimes even quoting the earlier messages as well! Please trim messages, and write in-line replies ... it helps a lot in terms of readability, and the size of message digests. Also, over the years, I have found it pretty useful when the subject line is relevant to the content of the message. Hi, I have configured my squid.conf settings and kept most of the settings as default to test the squid. but now, when i run the squid using squid service start or i try squid -z it shows following error : ---------- FATAL: Could not determine fully qualified hostname. Please set 'visible_hostname' Squid Cache (Version 2.5.STABLE1): Terminated abnormally. CPU Usage: 0.020 seconds = 0.010 user + 0.010 sys Maximum Resident Size: 0 KB Page faults with physical i/o: 387 Aborted ---------- my visible_hostname is Taj1 I tried to comment visible_hostname also but same error... (The hostname i have given is same as in the /etc/hosts . I have read all the docs and FAQs but still didnt find the solution.) since i m running this on local network so didnt give any .com or any other domain. My problem is that whenever I choose lycoris for booting , it shows "error 28 message". the message says " the selected item could not fit into memory". I am naive to linux terminology. Get a good fan if the fan from AMD isn't satisfactory. & yes, if you're too paranoid, then see if someone can get you a good thermal paste, like Arctic Silver's Ceramique or Shin Etsu's G751. If you're the adventurous kind and are blessed with a decent 24/7365 internet connection, install Gentoo Linux. My dear friend reported to me that his fps count went up from 850-900 fps to 1700-1800 fps JUST by changing to Gentoo Linux, getting the one which is specifically optimized for AthlonXP processors. That is squeezing out the most out of the combination of a good processor and a good distribution. I still am trying to figure out an integral solution to spinning down hard-disks, clocking down the CPU, and turning off the display in a timed manner. ACPI doesnt seem too well supported atleast till 2.4.21. I believe 2.4.22 resolved many ACPI issues. with good ACPI support, Athlon + GNU-Linux combination rocks. Vishal A. Hi ! I am having following combination: AMD XP Athalon 2000 on Asus AN7 266VM with 256DDRAM. The board has nVIDIA GeForce 2. I never had a problem with this combination & my pc remain on for more than 10 hrs perday continuously. MSI KT Ultra would be little more expensive but might offer you more like blue tooth. Hi vivek One package I know about is Crossover package which can be installed on any Linux machine and run windows applications such as "Word" "powerpoint" and "Excel". But I am afraid you have to pay some amount for the full version. But the trial version is readily available and is free for download. Hope this package would be of help to you. Hi Try out QtDesigner, it helps you to design GUI applications as easily as you do it in VB and helps you develop applications of different styles like Mac, DotNET etc. However Qt is just a designer and you need to do some additional programming in Python to completely build your application. QtDesigner with Python supports MySQL as well as PGSQL. Please check out the OCT issue of Developers IQ Magazine. It has an article on how to develop applications easily with the help of QtDesigner and Python and the example in the issue is building an application for interaction with MySQL. I think this is exactly what you want. I recently bought A7266VM Motherboard and an AMD 2000+ XP proc The motherboard has Ge-Force2 MX Display card onboard and onboard sound. I have installed RH9 and now i am trying to install the display drivers but i am unable to. The driver is NVIDIA-Ge*.run file which i got on the net. These are the steps that i followed 1) Started in run level 3 2) sh NVIDIAGe*.run 3) I made the changes in the XF86Config file i.e replace the display driver to nvidia (previously nv) and commented out one of the modules in the module section (as mentioned in the readme file) But after i make these changes and start X it gives me errors about my horizontal sync and vertical refresh....which is pretty suprising bcoz i did not make changes to that at all ..and with the same values my X was starting up without any issues previously. Hi there, I need to setup a proxy server for my company= with squid, There are more than 10,000 users that will connect with= this proxy for access to the net, I wanted to use a Redhat 7.3 or 8= provided they allow me to use huge amount of RAM something to a tun= e of 16GB, what I wanted to know is btw these two which ver to choos= e for this kind of memory? I am using Pine as well and face the same problem. It seems all the mails that are not displayed by Pine, come from Rediff. At end I have attached the mail and you can see the part that Pine is unable to display and hence shows the error. hi please check whether the terminals you are trying to login using the root id is listed in the securetty file located in /etc/securetty. If your terminal (tty1, tty2 .. etc) is not listed in this file then you wont be able to log in as root from these terminals in such cases you will have to resort to the su command. Hello , I need to develope a basic GUI in Qt. I have connected PushButton's Click signal to one custom slot of the Form. In this slot I want to call a function written in c which is in a separate file having following prototype & that file is included in my main application .. char* file(char *a) The argument to this function , I want to be text of QLineEdit widget when i write Table4->setText(rows,0, file(LineEdit1->text().latin1())); & compile it gives error invalid conversion from `const char*' to `char*' do i need anything else than latin1() ? Dear abbasali, the rh9 stock kernel does not have support for ntfs file systems, so u'll have to rebuild ur kernel with modular ntfs support..... Learn kernel hardening thats it.. simple search the internet for steps... Hi all, Please ignore previous mail. I wish to try out small foot print linux distributions. I have at my dispense a - HP Vectra Pentium 100 24MB RAM 80MB IDE HDD / 250MB IDE HDD onboard S3 Trio64 Keyboard I wish to turn this system into a blackbox system which can be accessed remotely either via terminal or via ppp link (Ethernet is currently optional, but its in plan for future). Currently I have installed Redhat 6 on this. ttyS0 is configured for serial terminals using mingetty. ttyS1 is configured for PPP access via null modem cable. Currently I can access the machine fine via above setup. But I want to explore more into this kind of system so that maximum flexibility can be provided in it. The current installation without X setup takes 200MB which I cam sure can be stripped down to basics. Any pointers??? I have downloaded ETLinux today but yet to try it. how to reduce the startup time of mozilla ? currently on my rh 9.0 box its taking quite a bit of time. Using Mozilla 1.5 custom compiled. I tried every bit of optimization. Gentoo and Mandrake claim first time startup of approx 3 seconds. I tried using the same options mentioned in the ebuild script of gentoo. Mine goes 3 seconds on 4th or 5th loading. Is there somewhere else i should look for optimization ?? Well I have tried D4x and it is a better dload manager than prozilla . My connection bandwidth was used really well . Only one problem is that it cannot connect redirected urls . I am unable to install Redhat Linux 6.1 or 7.3 on my new Intel 845GVAD2 motherboard with PIV 2.4 GHz. It gives me some anaconda, pythan ,etc error with an ok and debug button as options in ver 6.1 whereas in ver 7.3 it says some anaconda script error occured. it ejects the cd and says it is now safe to reboot the system. i tried installing linux ver9 and it installed perfectly. but i want to use ver 6.1 or 7.3 since i am building a cache server on it. please help. btw, i just returned the hyperthreading board processor and sata hard disk since it is not supported at all by ver 6.1 or 7.3. please help nelson

Please furnish more info about the vid card you use, if its integrated into the the motherboard and such info. Was the original Knoppix you had downloaded working fine on your hardware? If not, send it as a private message to the person. (Note that by default the mails go to the LIST) Please change the sender address appropriately before sending a personal mail. 2. When quoting another person, edit out whatever isn't directly applicable to your reply. Don't let your mailing software automatically quote the entire body of messages you are replying to when it's not necessary. Take the time to edit any quotations down to the minimum necessary to provide context for your reply. Nobody likes reading a long message in quotes for the third or fourth time, only to be followed by a one line response: "Yeah, me too". Messages larger than 7k will not be posted immediately. Limit line length to approximately 65-70 characters and avoid control characters. This helps ensure that lines don't grow too long after several levels of replies. Remember that each reply adds one level of > to the start of the line. 6. NEVER send chain letters to the mailing list. A mail simultaneously sent to more than 10 users will not reach the list. This is to eliminate possible spammers/bulk mailers to reach the list. 7. Be careful when using sarcasm and humour. Without face to face communications your joke may be viewed as criticism. When being humourous, use emoticons (smileys) to express humour. (tilt your head to the left to see the emoticon smile) :-) = happy face for humour. 8. If a mail has offended you personally, please send a private message to the person expressing how you feel, instead of sending it to the mailing list. 9. Please remember that we have both male and female members. No gender abuse is allowed on the list, and do not include any gender specific slang in your posts. 10. Acronyms can be used to abbreviate when possible, however messages that are filled with acronyms can be confusing and annoying to the reader. Hello Luggers, I am trying to use Squirrelmail (a web based email client). It requires an imap service running. I want to access my mails in /var/spool/mail/rajen. I don't know much about how to use imap nor have I read much about it anywhere. I installed imapd (UW), and xinetd. I enabled imap in /etc/xinetd.d/imap file, which looks like, service imap { disable = no socket_type = stream protocol = tcp wait = no user = root server = /usr/sbin/imapd flags = IPv4 } Then I enabled imap in inetd.conf, which looks like, imap stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd imapd I still could not log in using Squirrelmail. I then tried to use telnet on port 143. When I connect I get the following message, Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localhost. Escape character is '^]'. * OK [CAPABILITY IMAP4REV1 LOGIN-REFERRALS STARTTLS LOGINDISABLED] localhost IMAP4rev1 2002.332 at Wed, 15 Oct 2003 12:37:52 +0530 (IST) The problem it seems to me is that is imapd starts with LOGINDISABLED. How can I change that? Or is it so that imapd is compiled with this option. The man pages nor the documentation available with the package is of any help. BTW, I am using Suse Linux 8.2 ... Rajen.

My SUSE package installer says that glib 2.2.1 is installed but my pkgconfig cant seem to find out where. can you guys help me out. Hi, I am planning to use Lynx on my windows box. Problem is that the proxy server is a Micro$soft platform and setup for windows integrated authentication. Due to this reason, I am able to use only Internet Exploder to access net. Is there any way to set Lynx for windows or SOCKs authentication? I came across this GTK based downloader for Linux. It's really fast loading and full-featured like the famous flashget for windows. You might want to try it out - http://www.krasu.ru/soft/chuchelo/ While wget is good, it lacks multiple stream downloading, and for Joes, a gui and a few more things like scheduling, b/w control etc etc. Also there's a superb ad filter - bfilter - for linux. http://bfilter.sourceforge.net/ Its ad detection is heuristic in nature and hardly requires any fine tuning. It will be running a combination of Billing Software, Network Monitoring, Security (some form of encryption), Web Server, Database (mysql and postgres) which could lead to heavy usage. For that I created a pixbuf from file Glib::RefPtr<Gdk::Pixbuf> m_ppixBuf; m_ppixBuf = Gdk::Pixbuf::create_from_file(filename ); int lHeight = m_ppixBuf->get_height(); int lWidth = m_ppixBuf->get_width(); int lRotatedRowStride = m_ppixBuf->get_rowstride(); Then collected data in a local variable, gchar* pixdata = m_ppixBuf->get_pixels(); Allocating equivalent memory to one temporary variable gchar* tmpdata = (char *) malloc( lHeight * lWidth * lNo_of_channels); Then coying pixels one by one from source to target using memcpy function. // case 90 degree : for(j = 0, k = (lHeight-1); j < lHeight; j++, k--) { for(i = 0; i < lWidth; i++) { memcpy(&tmpmap[i * lRotatedRowStride + k * iNo_of_Channel], &bitmap[j * lRowstride + i * iNo_of_Channel], iNo_of_Channel); } } This code works fine , but takes lot of time to rotate large image. Is there any other way to make this operation faster? Also I want to save modified pixbuf in "tiff" file, but GDK library allows me to save only in PNG and JPEG format. Hi friends, I am facing the foollowing problem with LDAP based authentication. Let me explain about it. I am in the first phace and so only a single machine is acting as client. The domain name which I am using is dc=it,dc=iitb,dc=ac,dc=in And in the client side I configued the authentication part for LDAP based authentication. ( ie LDAP server as 10.129.50.37 -which is the ip of my server Base dn as dc=it,dc=iitb,dc=ac,dc=in ) Using the migration tool, I migrated the accouts from the client to server and it is comimg under ou=People subtree in the LDAP tree. Then I deleted all other accounts( root, postgres etc. ) from the LDAP tree and only one guest account of the client I kept there. Then I removed the guest user from the client and tried to login to that with the assumption that I can login through the LDAP. But it is not allowing me for that and the usual invalid username or password mesaage is what I am getting. So friends, Is there anything wrong in what I am doing ? or Is there something more I have to do ? Hi there, Just wondering if anyone on this forum could possibly point me to the right team who can provide reliable remote LAN/WAN/VOIP...etc monitoring services for company's critical intranet data (access, distribution, and core) in order to help them meet five nines (99.999) percent availability. I'm currently looking for teams who can provide (1) bandwidth availability (2) measure availability and identify outages daily, monthly, quarterly and yearly (3) outage cause analysis report to prevent similar outages (4) alert notification via pager and email (5) capacity planning (6) periodically audit router and switch configuration for consistency along w/ tactical on-call 24x7x365 support coverage via the monitoring tool(s). These are some key points that I'm looking at a team to provide, although there's a list of high availability point I like to discuss about. I'm open for suggestions. I want to all my port open for two way communication.. Like as of now i am not able to connect thru..Kmail service... I almost forgot, this solution needs to be running on a linux box because lot of companies whom I'm dealing with, will absolutely refuse to punch holes to their firewalls to allow m$ box(s) sniffing/baselining their networks specially w/ the recent attacks which is obviously not the last. They simply want to minimize these types of attacks as much as possible. Port control is done by firewall(man ipchains; man iptables). You need to open those ports. However, I find your question little unclear that if kmail is running on same machine or other machine on network. Most linux distributions have firewalls configured to allow outgoing connections. So Kmail should work if it is running on the same machine. Otherwise you need to setup your machine as a gateway. Amish.

i came across a peculiar problem in C: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ float a = 2.5, b = 2.5; printf ( " %f " , b++ / a + b-- ) ; ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ the weirdest part is that it gives different answers depending on the compiler used: gcc (2.95.2) :- 3.5 turbo C :- 4.5 jdk1.4 (gnu/linux) :- 4.5 my problem is, if such / similar question arises in gate (IIT entrance exam for M.Tech), what should i write? any help regarding the actual concept of solving problems similar to the above will be greatly appreciated. p.s.: Let Us C - yeshwant kanithkar -> appendix A (precedence of operators) -> increment/decrement operators, says that increment/decrement operators act from right to left. what does that mean? thank you for all the help ;-)

Hi all, I am trying to decompress hdstg2.img from Redhat 9.0 CD from /redhat/base folder to extract contents unfortunately it does not looks to be compressed in standard format gunzip < hdstg2.img > hd.img failed with the error stdin: not in gzip format This did worked when I tried long back in 6.2 Any help will be appreciated Regards

I think a few days back someone on the list requested for help on motorola sm6 modem driver. Hi Group, I have implemented message queue to communicate between two processes. Message queue is created by using IPC-wait. An XP-Com component running JavaScript and main application. The main application waits till some message is put by the Java Script application in the message queue. At this stage, if GDB is used for debugging, the application hangs. What is the workaround for this? I need to use fprint for each line to debug, which is quite tiring. Regards, Ramachandra

In 2 gb HD .I had installed debian linux in 900 mb partition and lilo in "MBR" .After that I have installed RedHat in another 900 mb partition ,while installing redhat I have not installed lilo neither in mbr nor in first sector of partition Now there are 2 partition each of 900 mb .1 which has debian and another which has redhat .Now I have to configure lilo to boot both debian and redhat since redhat partition doesn't have lilo installed on it .so I am not able to boot redhat. Regarding this I have gone through the How to's also .but no way

problem starting emacs

thank you for all your replies, which were really sent so very promptly. that shows the enthusiasm that linuxers have for helping each other with their problems. unfortunately, the problem wasn't solved. it is still giving the same error: emacs: error in loading shared libraries: libXaw3d.so.7: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory i think there is some problem with the shared libraries. it would be great if anyone of you could point it out, so that i could tell my sysadmin to do the needful thanks for all the co-operation and support linuxers rule!

hi, if it's not the wrong location of the fs.h file (i really doubt it is) ... then try this ... since the compiler is saying "dereferencing pointer to incomplete type" ... maybe it is that the struct u r passing to the function is not properly initialized ... like if the struct object u r passing to the function has been just intialized as struct buffer_head *structobbject; then structobject is not initialized ... try structobject = new buffer_head[1]; then u can pass structobject to ur function and use map->b_data within the function... this may work .. try it ... if this doesn't .. post again .. i'll think of something else. dinesh. - Perfection or Nothing.

Dear all, We've just witnessed a debate about allowing /banning HTML mail. I received (or didn't receive, choose whatever you want) such a mail from ILUG Delhi, which highlights the problem of banning such mail. One member, Tarun Upadhyay, has done some hard work to create a table listing software available commercially and in open source, and has tried to start a discussion. His table, when sent in HTML, got blocked because ILUG Delhi blocks all attachments. When he sent it as in-line plain text, you can see what came through. I can't read head or tail of it because of the line wrapping, and I don't have time to manually re-format it just to read it. Tarun is probably going to try putting it up on some Website. Not all of us list members have access to such Websites, and the ILUG groups don't seem to provide this sort of Vault as a service to its members. (ILUG Delhi certainly doesn't seem to.) And if I were in his place, I wouldn't have taken the trouble to find a Website in this case; this table covers a subject fundamental enough for me to want to send it to all list members by email. I asked Tarun, by direct email, to send me the table as an HTML attachment. He did. My purpose was served. Is this a scalable model? If a hundred members of ILUGD (they have many hundred) had asked individually, should I expect that he'll oblige all of them? Who loses and who wins in this case? I'd say the whole mailing list loses, because no discussion really happens, and Tarun Upadhyay's work "goes waste" in a sense. As it is, we know how rare it is for any member of any list to create any original content and submit it to the list. What would you suggest we should do in situations like this? My suggestion: all emails submitted with attachments should be forwarded with moderator approval (if Mailman permits such a filtering); It should not blindly be stripped of attachments. The messages have to be related to propogating, using, trouble-shooting, bug-fixing, of GNU/Linux operating system. Feature comparision of other operating systems and distributions is allowed, but restrain from BASHING. GNU/Linux is possibly the most friendly operating system, and hence as users of the OS let us all maintain a FRIENDLY tone to our conversations on the list. YOU are the best judge to determine the relevance or irrelevance of your post to GNU/Linux, and therefore you are responsible for your postings. Since this is not a moderated list, please read the guidelines before posting mails to the list. The sole functioning of this list is based on the self disciplinary nature of its users. ILUG-Bom Mailing List participation Guidelines 1. Keep paragraphs and messages short and to the point. See that what you are writing is useful to the mailing list. If not, send it as a private message to the person. (Note that by default the mails go to the LIST) Please change the sender address appropriately before sending a personal mail. 2. When quoting another person, edit out whatever isn't directly applicable to your reply. Don't let your mailing software automatically quote the entire body of messages you are replying to when it's not necessary. Take the time to edit any quotations down to the minimum necessary to provide context for your reply. Nobody likes reading a long message in quotes for the third or fourth time, only to be followed by a one line response: "Yeah, me too". Messages larger than 7k will not be posted immediately. Such messages will need the list admin's approval. 3. Focus on one subject per message and always include a pertinent subject title for the message, that way the user can locate the message quickly. Also please include a suitable header in case of Commercial / Offtopic mails. Do NOT use subject headers like "HELP", "One question". Most experienced users will simply ignore these mails. 4. Capitalise words only to highlight an important point or to distinguish a title or heading. Capitalizing whole words that are not titles is generally termed as SHOUTING! *Asterisks* surrounding a word can be used to make a stronger point. Use the underscore symbol before and after the title of a book, i.e. _Linux Configuration And Installation_ Underscores may also be used to signify _underlining_, while surrounding your text with slashes makes it /italics/. 5. Limit line length to approximately 65-70 characters and avoid control characters. This helps ensure that lines don't grow too long after several levels of replies. Remember that each reply adds one level of > to the start of the line. 6. NEVER send chain letters to the mailing list. A mail simultaneously sent to more than 10 users will not reach the list. This is to eliminate possible spammers/bulk mailers to reach the list. 7. Be careful when using sarcasm and humour. Without face to face communications your joke may be viewed as criticism. When being humourous, use emoticons (smileys) to express humour. (tilt your head to the left to see the emoticon smile) :-) = happy face for humour. 8. If a mail has offended you personally, please send a private message to the person expressing how you feel, instead of sending it to the mailing list. 9. Please remember that we have both male and female members. No gender abuse is allowed on the list, and do not include any gender specific slang in your posts. 10. Acronyms can be used to abbreviate when possible, however messages that are filled with acronyms can be confusing and annoying to the reader. Examples: IMHO = in my humble/honest opinion FYI = for your information BTW = by the way Flame = antagonistic criticism. http://www.jargon.org for more such acronymns. 11. Please provide URL's to articles wherever possible. Avoid cutting and pasting whole articles especially considering the fact that all may not be interested. In any case your posting may not be more than 7k. Occassionally if you may have to send such a mail, post it, it will reach the members after the list admin approves it. 12. When using the mailing list for commercial purpose, please prefix the subject line with "COMMERCIAL". 13. Please *read all your mails before replying* to a mail. Someone may have already answered it. 14. Remember that most of the people are paying by the minute for their internet access. Some pay per byte. Hence please do not waste bandwidth. Ensure your posts are in plain text only. Do not post html mails, or include attachments. Restrict signatures to not more than 4 lines of 72 column text. Do NOT include company disclaimers in your messages. 15. Any violation to the above will be given a warning. 5 such warnings and the subscriber will be suspended from the mailing list for 15 days. Votes were taken on whether to block non-text messages or not. 740 subscribers. About 30 participated in the vote 18 - for 9 - against 3 - i cannot figure out what they said There was also 1 vote for Digests being MIMEd. One common request from all camps was that html mails/senders of these mails should not be blocked completely, but if possible should be converted to text and sent forward. If it is blocked, then the user should be notified about why it was blocked and how he can fix it. Admin's decision: filter content. primarily text/plain will be allowed through. signed mails will also be allowed. text/html will be converted to text/plain. Other attachments will be stripped. Messages will be dropped if there is nothing left in them after filtering (eg, someone sends html mail that has no content). -- List Admin

Blocking any attachments is fine, but blocking html to favour plain text would be like buying a new computer just because your operating system doesn't support it. Why can't there be html support into procmail, mutt, etc (lynx code could provide a hint)? We're trying to get people interested in GNU/Linux, not to tell them "You are welcome, but only on our conditions. Don't use html mailing. Don't call GNU/Linux as Linux (boy do we have flame fests on that one)....". All I heard from the mutt and procmail users here is "change mailing list policies for us because our systems don't like them". Why doesn't anyone come forward and say "lets start a mini project to incorporate html support into procmail/mutt". The whole concept of GNU/Linux being a geeks OS only is being stressed here by saying "you gotta learn alternate (probably dificult for some) ways to express yourself by using your imagination. If you're not good enough then Linux is not for you.. go to your sucky windows". Ban html messages and lose the initiative on getting newbies into the GLUG. Getting warning messages the first time doesn't exactly seem to be a welcoming sign for any newbie probably struggling to install the OS on his system. Let it remain an elitist group then. i connect to a gnu/linux server through telnet. on the server, emacs is installed, but X is not. when i try to start emacs, it gives the foll error (i guess this is because emacs is trying to start X). emacs: error in loading shared libraries: libXaw3d.so.7: cannot open shared obje ct file: No such file or directory is there any way to start emacs in the non-gui mode (i know this can be done, but don't know how to do it). at my home, if i open emacs in the prompt mode (with the X stopped), it opens automatically in the non-gui mode. the server is managed by a sysadmin. do i need to tell him to do something, or can it be done if i add something in my ".bashrc" or ".emacsrc" files? i would be thankful if anyone could suggest some way to do it.

Hi Philip Thanks a lot for your reply. This changeLog and RELEASE_NOTES idea sound good. So when you have to release a module you need to edit these files to reflect your projects capibiliteis etc. Am I right? There's one more thing I wanted to ask. I can update my module or file to a tag or a date in YYYY-MM-DD format. But how can I update a file to a older revision which is not tagged. For example. Today I make 3 commits for a file. and only the first and last are tagged so say the file has revisions 1.1 1.2 and 1.3 Now I can update to 1.1 and 1.3 since they are tagged. How do I update to 1.2 ? Hi all I intend to buy a Pocket PC (Toshiba e335 or something ) that runs Windows Mobile 2003. I have seen ppl using opie on ipaq and zaurus . has anyone tried / tested / knows anyone who has tried OPIE or any gnu/linux env on a toshiba ? Any pointers shall be helpful. have tried google not much luck. plz dont recommend me other handhelds as cost is a concern. Thanks Harsh

Yes I think only text/plain, text/html and also message/rfc822(and sub text parts) should be allowed. Because attachments if any can be posted in form of links. I am asking to allow text/html because Yahoo/Hotmail/MSOE, the most used e-mail clients offer rich text compose feature, and its tendency of people to use it, and probably its on by default and non-technical/newbie sender may not know how to disable it. OR if we block text/html then he/she should automatically informed(atleast 1 or 2 times) that his/her message was blocked, for it is not text/plain. But I dont know if that can be done with mailman.
