Reinstalling GRUB

Hi, I have the following setup hd1 -> Grub , Win2000 hd2-> RH8 and RH7.2 in seprate partitions. I use Grub to boot in either of the 3 O/s's. Now, I want to reformat and reinstall Win2000 on my primary master hdd. I am quite sure Grub will go away. I have boot disks to go back into RH7.2. Can I then boot into 7.2 and reinstall Grub ?? I do not remember how, or in what sequence I did all this the first time, so now I am concerned that I may not be able to reinstall grub. I do not want to use xosl / lilo or any other boot loader. Is this possible ? Thanks Shahed.

problem with auto-mounting cdrom

Error in getting second eth up while booting the system

Hello All, I am using RedHat 7.2 on COMPAQ DL360 server.Am getting error in /var/log/message stating "ifup: Error, some other host already uses address X.Y.Z.W. network: Bringing up interface eth1: failed". This machine is already having one ip address on eth0.it is perfectly working.But when second NIC is configured and machine is booted up, got these kind of errors. X.Y.Z.W ip is static IP.not getting from DHCP.also this ip is not allocated to other host.so,what could be the reason?? Awaiting for favouarable reply. Thanks in advance. Rgds, kavita

'Pinnacle PCTV Plus' configuration success

I have been (finally) successful in configuring the 'Pinnacle PCTV Plus' TV tuner card. I compiled kernel 2.4.20 and then upgraded bttv driver to 0.7.106. Next version of Debian?

I was at the Debian website and read that the next version of their OS (Sarge) is going to built with gcc 3.2. I use RedHat 7.2 and have wanted to use a distribution built with gcc 3.2 so I could use the much improved C++ compiler without hassles. I also wanted to switch to Debian. So the logical conclusion would be to wait for Sarge to be released. Greetins, I had posted a few days back asking help for the Garbled text in RH 8.0, I have found that by following these two simple things the quality of the output of the console can be incresed. 1. Setting LANG="en_US" in /etc/sysconfig/i18n (Defaults to en_US.UTF-8). 2. Using frame buffer mode for the console. I used vga=789 as a parameter to my kernel to accomplish this. Bye. -- Amish K. MySQL still lacks many features big customers want, but the software maker and CEO Marten Mickos have dazzling opportunities ahead. FORTUNE Wednesday, March 12, 2003 By David Kirkpatrick Talking last week with Marten Mickos, CEO of MySQL, took me back to the golden days of 1999. Here was a fresh-faced, unbelievably enthusiastic CEO, raving about the future prospects of his product, just like so many executives I met back in those unreal times. But Mickos has a very real opportunity. The open-source movement has become a major factor across the software industry, and MySQL is the world's most popular open-source database. In contrast to typical commercial software, open-source products have their underlying programming code available for all to see and modify. The products are also free or close to it, which, needless to say, helps them grow rapidly if they're good. MySQL is used in four million installations around the world, Mickos estimates. The product gets downloaded for free off the company's website about 30,000 times a day. And here's what Sun CEO Scott McNealy said in a February interview with Computerworld: "If you want to save...money, make the default database MySQL. It's free, it's bundled [with Sun's Solaris software], you've got the whole open-source community working on making it better. If Yahoo and Google can run their entire operations on MySQL, then certainly there's a huge chunk of your operations that could run on it as well." McNealy slightly exaggerated the Yahoo and Google stuff, but both companies do use MySQL extensively. I e-mailed so-called "Technical Yahoo" Jeremy Zawodny, who replied: "We use it all over the place-for batch feed processing in Yahoo Classifieds and Yahoo Finance, to serve live content in Yahoo Sports, Yahoo News and Yahoo Finance, and even in some billing systems. Our usage continues to grow." And the product has impressive capabilities. It is mostly used to run websites, including Alwayson-Network.com, Slashdot.org, parts of Sony Pictures, and many more. In addition, it's built into products from many technology companies. Aside from Solaris, it goes into the server version of Mac OS X and most commercial versions of Linux. Cisco puts it into intrusion detection devices. MySQL employs a so-called dual licensing model. Anybody can download the product for free and use it for whatever they want, but in so doing they become ethically obliged to share any modifications with the company. However, there's a second option. Pay for the product and you can do anything you want with it. "We're not a charity," says Mickos. "Even when we give it away free we always get a benefit out of it. We have the world's largest quality assurance facility." This database costs only $395 for every server on which it is installed, quite a contrast to the $20,000 you might pay for Oracle. The product also runs on cheaper hardware and typically is cheaper to maintain. MySQL had $5 million in revenues last year, a figure that should double in 2003, says Mickos. Privately funded, with ABN Amro lead investor, the Swedish company just turned profitable. MySQL lacks many features big companies want for using it with applications that are central to their business, like manufacturing or finance software from companies like SAP. But it is getting inexorably better thanks to all those helpers bequeathed by its business model. Says open-source expert Stacey Quandt at the Giga Information Group: "As the feature/functionality gap continues to narrow, MySQL will eventually take market share away from Oracle, [IBM's] DB2, and Microsoft SQL Server at the high end." Charlie Garry at Meta Group says open-source software is now supplanting costlier proprietary software for well-defined, commoditized tasks. He predicts that the established vendors will fight back with free, stripped-down versions of their own products, but he has no doubt about MySQL's prospects: "MySQL will penetrate the enterprise similarly to the way SQL Server did, but with much greater speed." Yahoo's Zawodny makes a different analogy: "MySQL is to Oracle as Linux is to Windows. It will slowly but steadily creep up the food chain, just like Linux has." Mickos is already seeing real headway. "I estimate we command 20% of the worldwide installed base of databases," he says , "but of revenues we only command only .02%. So there's a factor of 1,000." He laughs. "And we are making money. People ask me 'What's wrong-why are you leaving money on the table?' We say 'You should ask the other database companies what is wrong with their cost structure." One of the ways is to use a script for your FTP. I don't know if it is compatible with ncftp, but it works with ftp. How to change remote file permission.

Hi friends, I am having a web space www.abei.net. I want to change the file permission to (read write execute) for file /tmp/abc.txt in my web space. I am using ncftp command to upload the file and it is set on crontab. So automatically the file get transfered in the web. I have used the following command line to upload it in to web. ncftpput -u username -p passwd ftp.abei.net /tmp /home/vinod/abc.txt now I want to change the permission of the uploaded file automatically from my local machine. knoppix resolution problem

random no generation issues

PCQuest Linux Version 8

Hi, I got the PCQuest Linux Version 8 distro last week and installed it on my PC. It is based on the RedHat 8, but with some modification which they feel is better for Indian Users. I was impressed with the way it installs and works. I think new users may find it very useful. For example, knowing that many users now use cable internet and that most of the cable operators use cyberoam software called 24onlineclient, they have provided the necessary software which can be used to connect to cable internet. Similarly, they have provided aMSN and Yahoo messanger. I found this very useful. They have also provided a software called MONO, which is supposed to be the GNU\Linux version of Microsoft's Dot Net Framework. The PCQuest magazine for this month gives detailed explaination for each of the things they have provided and how to get it running. And basically in not techie language. Basically, I got "out of the box" features. Only problem is that after every 12-15 minutes, I get logged out of my cable network and need to log in again. I hope to get my cable operator solve for me today. Regards Saswata

Hi luggers I have a setup of 2 lan cards in my server,eth0 connected to my cable isp and eth1 connected to internel lan. eth0 XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX(public ip) eth1 10.100.100.1 (internel lan) now i have installed squid for sharing internet among computers on my lan,but some applications like kazaa do not work with squid.So i need to do nat so that i can share internet with out specifying any settings in internet explorer or any other application (squid proxy settings). I want to allow 10.100.100.15 to 10.100.100.20 ip's to access net through nat and others through squid.Can any body suggest me how to do that or if some body can send me a ready made sample config file for the above setup,it would be great help if i get the sample file. Apache server starting problem

I have installed apache server 2.0 installed on my machine. The problem is that it is not starting. when ever i try to start httpd with ./httpd start command it shows failed. then i tried using ./apachectl start it gives message that cant access httpd.pid file which is one of the directive in the httpd.conf. there is no such file available in location. then created a empty file at specified location and again done same procedure i got same result. then i deleted httpd.pid and done ./apachectl start it given no error. but again ./httpd start failed. PCQuest Linux Version 8

Hi, I got the PCQuest Linux Version 8 distro last week and installed it on my PC. It is based on the RedHat 8, but with some modification which they feel is better for Indian Users. I was impressed with the way it installs and works. I think new users may find it very useful. For example, knowing that many users now use cable internet and that most of the cable operators use cyberoam software called 24onlineclient, they have provided the necessary software which can be used to connect to cable internet. Similarly, they have provided aMSN and Yahoo messanger. I found this very useful. They have also provided a software called MONO, which is supposed to be the GNU\Linux version of Microsoft's Dot Net Framework. The PCQuest magazine for this month gives detailed explaination for each of the things they have provided and how to get it running. And basically in not techie language. Basically, I got "out of the box" features. Only problem is that after every 12-15 minutes, I get logged out of my cable network and need to log in again. I hope to get my cable operator solve for me today. Regards Saswata

knoppix problem

my hdd has the foll config: partition type mount size comments hda1 vfat /mnt/win 3GB hda5 ext3 /boot 23MB hda6 ext3 /data 10GB hda7 swap 205MB hda8 ext3 / 2.5GB Red Hat Linux 7.3 hda9 ext3 / 3.33GB Knoppix i first installed knoppix in hda9 and then installed Rhl 7.3 in hda8. The Rhl installation did not detect knoppix and hence did not create an entry in grub. when i tried to mount hda9 as ext3 in /knoppix on hda8, while booting it said that the filesystem is not supported. but when i mount hda9 from root prompt in hda8 using "mount -t ext3 /dev/hda9 /knoppix", i can access all the directories present on hda9. i tried making the foll entry in /boot/grub/grub.conf title knoppix root(hda0,5) kernel /vmlinuz ro root=/dev/hda9 initrd /initrd.gz #here i've created "$ln -s /boot/initrd.gz initrd.gz" but, when i try to select the knoppix option at the grub login, it gives me "error 15: file not found" what is the problem? how do i solve it? hence, my immediate problem is to get a working entry in grub, so that i can use my knoppix installation. any help will be greatly apprediated -- +++ GMX - Mail, Messaging & more http://www.gmx.net +++ Bitte lächeln! this is regarding the technical festival named "Praxis" to be held in Vivekanand engg. college on 16-17 march. in the last meet, i had said, that being a student of Vivekanand engg. coll. i will talk to the Praxis managing committee about holding a small workshop on Gnu/Linux and/or having a small stall where we could sell Gnu/Linux related cds like Knoppix, etc. i inform you all with great displeasure, that the festival is heavily scheduled with various events, and that we cannot be allowed to hold a workshop. but i also have a good news. in all probability, we might be allowed to hold a workshop on behalf of the IEEE VESIT chapter in the following week. we might also be allowed to have a stall to sell cds, etc. i will contact the necessary authorities, and let you all know about the workshop as soon as possible. i personally think that educating students about Gnu/Linux is important and the media shouldn't matter much. so we should all see this as a good opportunity -- +++ GMX - Mail, Messaging & more http://www.gmx.net +++ Bitte lächeln! Hi Srinivas, With Php/Postgres/Apache what issues i see is the configuration directives that u have given while compiling php with postgres and apache, here are some configuration parameters you can see: Postgres Configuration Directives: pgsql.allow_persistent boolean Whether to allow persistent Postgres connections. pgsql.max_persistent integer The maximum number of persistent Postgres connections per process. pgsql.max_links integer The maximum number of Postgres connections per process, including persistent connections. So your php{3/4}.ini file should have these types of values assigned for these directives: [PostgresSQL] ; Allow or prevent persistent links. pgsql.allow_persistent = On ; Maximum number of persistent links. -1 means no limit. pgsql.max_persistent = -1 ; Maximum number of links (persistent+non persistent). -1 means no limit. pgsql.max_links = -1 If these values are fixed then you might get problems what you are talking about. These values can also be read from phpinfo() in a php script file, so u necessarily need not open this file. Some work is on by Prabhat Hegde from Sun Microsystems on adding devanagari support, basically by using Pango (www.pango.org) rendering engine. He is exploring doing it using Opentype fonts. (Any one working for this should work with Prabhat for guidance & review, as he already has experience in Mozilla codebase ) Some hindi translation work has been done by a group based in Mumbai, available at http://www.bttlindia.com/mozilla/ . Some translation work for Tamil is also on. (These translations should be reused, instead of starting from scratch) Notes: 2.i has to be done in active participation with Mozilla developers & done at those forums ( mozilla-i18n , mozilla-l10n ) 2.ii.b is pure translation work, can be done in centralized or distributed fashion. 2.i.c - Since ISCII, TSCII etc are not registered character sets, it may not be possible to use them with Mozilla autodetection feature. Some workaround could be suggested. ISCII text will basically be converted to Unicode internally for display, enabled through use of \\\'iso8829-12\\\' ( reserved for Indic - ISO is waiting for us to settle to something :) . Eureka!! SM56 Internal Modem Driver Available

Hi Group, Sometimes before there was discussion in the group on the that sm56 motorola internal modem doesn't work on linux machine but now it is possible to use the above modem as the driver source code is been made available but it is not done by the modem company thanks to Mr. Rajes Kizhuveetil for writting the driver all you have to do is download the driver from www.sm56.tk untar it "make" and "make install" that's it you are done and now u can use the modem but the problem is it doesn't work with wvdial (Konsole dialer) But with kpp it works fine. knoppix Install Script.

Been off the list for some time.... so i have missed quite a few mails/ threads.. so 'excuse please ' if this is a repeat of sorts Caught a bit of a thread regarding the knoppix boot cd ... I have trimmed the Knoppix Install script ( knx-hdinstall ) to allow me to install knoppix on a Harddisk with the filesystem of my choice . ( Ya I know... why do you want to install,..... well why not ? ) The existing one was in german and currently defaults to ext2. (I have used the Cd from the Linux for you issue #1 ) I have stripped the dialog boxes out, so that one can first format the partition manually with the required filesystem. then change a few variables at the start of the script, and run. Still needs a bit of work, but i have used it twice already without much issue. If anyone wants it please contact me. Its under 4kb so maybe i could mail it to the list ? Pinnacle PCTV Plus blues

With kernel 2.4.20, I am having a strange problem with the tv tuner card. When I turn on the PC, boot into Linux, start 'xawtv', I am able to change channels but the video isn't displayed properly. There is some weak and distorted audio audible after fine tuning but still video doesn't appear. But if I boot into windows first after turning ON the PC, set the channel and then restart and boot into linux, I am unable to change the channels but the audio and video work perfectly!! So once the channel is set by the software under Windows, the Linux 'tuner' module is unable to change the channels. But if the channel is not set by the PCTV software for Windows, the tuner module is able to change the channels but bttv is unable to show the video. In the kernel messages, I can clearly see that the tuner is getting detected as 'mt2032' when I directly boot into Linux. But if I first set the channel through Windows and then try to change the channel in Linux, the tuner gets detected as '4', which, from the tuner.c in the kernel source, means 'NoTuner'. Comments, especially from Tarun and Nilesh Chaudhari who had responded previously, are required. Nilesh, what kernel version are you using, because you said that you have been successful in configuring this card. I will download that version of kernel because I really want that card totally working on Linux and not depending on Windows to change the channels. That card ABSOLUTELY sucks on Windows running on my 200 MHz processor with a SIS6215 display card; but with Linux, on the same machine, the audio and video work PERFECTLY at full screen with practically 0% CPU usage. -- Abhir Joshi http://education.vsnl.com/abhir/

knoppix cds reqd

hello luggers, i got a knoppix cd with the 1st issue of my linux4u subscription. i liked it verrrryyyy much. i also realised that it is the perfect distro 4 the people in my class. all of them except 3 (including me) r not at all interested in linux. after hearing terror stories (of crashing hdds & losing all data) from me (my previous experiences. but these experiences only increased my determination of working on the linux box & that 2 at my place), they all just ran away frm linux. but lately, i've been getting requests frm some of them 2 install linux on their hdds so that they can learn linux. when i told abt the knoppix distro, they were very excited. i also promised them a demo in the coll lab. but having only a pIII 550MHz, with 64Mb of ram (also i forgot 2 decrease the screen res frm 1024x768 to 800x600 which further taxed the sys) the sys ran like hell. in fact it didn't run satisfactoraly at all. still some of them want 2 buy the knoppix cds. i told them that they cud get them frm me @ Rs. 50/- with the FSF or GLUG logo (or some logo ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ 4 that matter (they don't care)) printed. (if some cds r remaining frm the sale at vjti on the 14th of feb, the same cud b used :-))) i wud b greatful if 1 of u cud arrange 4 abt 10 cds on the next lug ^^^^^^^ meet, which i hope is on the 9th at ruparel college. network problem

i hope u all have seen my previous mail, regarding the detection of the ethernet card while installing knoppix. sorry, i cudn't include all the details at that time, was in a hurry. so here's the backgnd: i installed knoppix on my project comp in the comp lab of my college. the installation being in german, i cudn't configure the ethernet card. later, after the installation was complete, i ran "kudzu", it detected the ethernet card (the o/p of kudzu -p has been given in the previous mail) & said it has configured it. i use rhl 7.3 at my home, & have never used a debian distro. so i've got no idea as 2 what cmds r 2 b used 2 configure the static ip addrs & the gateway addrs. Hi! I'm getting a nasty jvm hang on redhat 2.1as. Just trying to figure out where the problem could be. I wanted to know what's the quick-n-dirty way to make the jvm use an older version of glibc. Create seperate partitions and install. Use grub to boot. Install grub on the mbr with the menu.lst file in the boot partition of the first installation (/dev/hda4 - grub numbers partitions from 0. so 4 is 5 - in my case). Micros DB access

Hi guys, A little background first. Micros is Point of Sale application for the hotel industry. It runs on Sco Unix among other platforms. According to Micros it uses a proprietary database but we think that it uses some sort of a Unix filesystem. Our problem is getting access to this data as we want it to be available real time for a application we are developing for our client. I have two problems: 1. What are the file systems available on Sco?? [Slightly off-topic] 2. How can I make use of Linux to access this machine and data?? Bye, Amol

Hi all, NAS(Network-Attached storage). SAN(Storage Area Network). I am not understanding the exact difference between the above two technologies. Both provide optimal consolidation, centralized data storage, and efficient file access.Both can provide high data availability and can ensure integrity with redundant components and redundant array of independent disks. Where exactly they will sit?. and what is the architectural design of both? What are the different types of hardwares can support individually. Can any one plz help me regarding this...... I would like the RMS lecuture that was conducted on the 14th Feb 2003 at VJTI reach as many users as possible and thus to be able to download it from the internet I'm trying to get the size of the file to be fairly tiny at the same time not loose out too much on the quality. Hello all, congratulations on having successfully migrated all these shools to LTSP. This indeed calls for a pat on the back for all who have toiled night and day to achieve the end objective. We certainly should collaborate and strengthen these initiatives all around the country in an effort to take LTSP to schools accross the country. These noble initiatives will in the long run help our schools/colleges may they be rich/poor by reducing huge overheads otherwise incurred by marrying other Closed Source vendors giving abysmally low ROI. building a list of applications

Hi I would like to build a list of Open Source apps which can be used instead of commonly used applications under the Win. The idea is to invite all you folks to contribute to the listing and I shall compile all the contributions and make it available as a PDF or HTML document which can be posted on the LUG website. The reason for building this list is obvious, to showcase the list of 'alternative' available software which will enable small and large scale users to migrate to from 'grey market' stuff etc to Open Source. It will serve as a reference document which can be used by all to provide information about the availability of tons of productivity software in the Open Source arena, and to dispel the fears of open hearted acceptance. This is an introductory email where my objective is to get feedback from you folks about the information being solicited. Do you think this is good or should there be any more information relating to the entry ? I am also including an entry as an example. Sometime ago i was pushing fn for a event covering all the Technical/Engineering Colleges in and around GOA. An Ellaborate workshop covering various facets of FSF-OS and basic technical/non-technical concepts regarding gnu-linux. Am interested in seeing the same kicked off. Only if you could start the leg work for that.....the Bombay LUG will be glad to have some volunteers participate in the road show all over GOA and surrounding areas. Have a nice day all. Hello Gp, good-evening...:) GP....i have been thinking about the event we just visited at Kolhapur and Dinesh, i am very glad with the way you went about having the Organisers convinced about the Genuiness of FSF-OS thus culminating in having us present our case to the audience. Can i suggest we start talking to Miss. Ambuja again as she is a real formidable force at Shivaji University. We would be really glad to conduct workshops Technical/Non-Technical for the various Engineering Colleges in Shivaji University. A lot of Engineering Colleges are getting more and more interested in the FSF-OS phenomenon and i want to bank on you towards having this movement taken to the maximum colleges in Interior Maharashtra. Please think about the same....i also want the LUGGERS to know about our efforts and suggest possible course of action. The basic idea of RAID was to combine multiple small, inexpensive disk drives into an array of disk drives which yields performance exceeding that of a Single Large Expensive Drive.In Linux how internally it will do?. My commentary on GNUnify

I recently had the opportunity to be at GNUnify - a Free software festival. The guest of honour was the GNU man himself - RMS. I was present on Sunday the 16th February where most of the invited talks were held. There have been other reports on GNUnify, so I'll concentrate only on the Mumbai GLUG's contribution. Names may have been changed, no disrespect is meant by this. The day started out with Dr. Nagnurjuna telling us why we should use Free Software, and dispelling some of the myths that have been spread by persons with other agendas. His contention that changing from our current operating system to GNU is no different from the changes that we have to make every two years to start using a new version of that OS is sound. Nagarjuna tends to flavour his lectures with a lot of humour and it was quite engaging that day. Especially funny was his comment about changing word processors: "We changed from WordStar to another word processor called Word Perfect, and then to another word processor called Word, and then to another word processor called Word, and then to another word processor called Word...". I overheard RMS commend him on this point too. Nag also had a three stage IQ test during his presentation. In the first case he asked the audience if they knew who was responsible for certain inventions/discoveries in science. He next asked people if they knew who had written certain Free Software projects (linux, emacs, gcc, perl, python), and finally who had written certain Proprietary products. Everyone got the first two correct. Later in the day Prof. Jeetendra Shah - or should we call him Freetendra Shahftware? - delivered a talk on the use of Free Software in education. He spoke primarily about research done by Seymour Papert in the use of computers to enable education. This is different from using computers to teach children. While the latter uses the computer to program children, the former lets the children learn by programming a computer. The talk was particularly interesting for me because it deals with my area of research. He spoke about how Free Software could help us achieve this goal, primarily by building different scenarios for people from different backgrounds. He also demonstrated Freeduc and distributed 25 CDs of the same. He suggests that every school should have one of these CDs. Jeetendra Shah was quite active throughout the day urging people to come forward and support other projects too, like IndLinux. The final attraction was RMS' speech. Nagarjuna introduced him, although it sounded more like he was reading out his own death warrant. He said RMS was not a person, and then followed it up by saying he's history. At that point RMS was ready to strangle Nag, if it weren't for the large number of people watching. There were several Mumbai Gluggers in Pune over the weekend. I'm told Nirav gave a lecture on PHP on Saturday. I wasn't present for that. I also met Gurpreet Singh - who's been on the receiving end of my list policing on more than one occassion. He made some insightful comments during Prof. Shah's presentation. He's requested me to post the usenet etiquette here, so I'm going to do it for the last time ever. The course is open to all those who are interested in the field of neural networks, and assumes no background either in NN or AI. As you know neural networks are being applied heavily in a variety of disciplines from finance, diagnosis, pattern recognition, etc. The course will start with simple perceptron systems and will cover back-propagation based multi-layer perceptron systems, Radial basis function networks, Hopfield networks, and Self organising maps. Guidelines for developing neural network models will also be explored. Participants will explore the various frameworks using a NN development kit, for various data sets so as to get a clear understanding of their functioning and utility.
