Hi, We are writing to you as you are interested in Free Software issues. Some of the issues mentioned below have been discussed informally by some of us, including Frederick Noronha, Vidyadhar Gadgil and Animesh Nerurkar, after there were moderation and ownership changes in ilug-goa(a)yahoogroups.com over the past year or so, which completely reversed the nature of the mailgroup we had become used to and fond of in the period 2000-2008. To get to the point, the only mailgroup in Goa dedicated to free software issues (ilug-goa(a)yahoogroups.com) is de facto oriented towards technical issues only, and discussion on philosophical and political issues is blocked, under one pretext or another. This overly restrictive moderation policy and practice run counter to the principles of Free Software because technical issues are only half the story. The other, more important, part is the philosophy and politics which have guided Free Software. If these are ignored, then Free Software will inevitably become unfree. Also, such an approach creates serious blocks in the process of Free Software popularisation, and restricts all discussion to existing users who have some understanding and experience of technical issues. We increasingly see this approach not only in ilug-goa but in FLOSS groups and meets all over the country, and find it exceedingly disturbing. Whereas we have certain issues with the way ilug-goa is run, there is no inherent conflict between the two groups – in fact, our differences would be similar to those between the Free Software movement and proponents of Open Source software. But we feel the need to create another space where the discussion will not be restricted, and philosophical and political issues will get the importance they deserve. We are therefore setting up a group: fsug-goa(a)yahoogroups.com. This group is an attempt to recover lost space, which has been lost due to an overly restrictive moderation and ownership policy which has been implemented over the past year or so on ilug-goa(a)yahoogroups.com . We (the moderators of FSUG-Goa) will continue to be members of ilug-goa -- if the owners and moderators of that groups permit this, of course. We would like to invite all members of ilug-goa (including its owner and moderators) and other lovers of free software in Goa to join this group too. The moderation policy of this group will be as follows: 1. Abusive posts will not be allowed. 2. Posts should be restricted to Free Software issues, broadly defined. 3. Members' posts will be unmoderated. Only if a poster offends against these rules despite three warnings, (s)he will be placed on moderation. Moderators' decisions on this matter will be taken by a majority decision of the moderators (currently three, as below). 4. We believe in free speech. Other rules, if any, will be evolved only as and when there is an overwhelming opinion that they are needed. Posts will not be blocked, except under exceptional circumstances, as we see this as an attempt to block dissent and discussion. Chess game in linux

I want to set up some computer-versus-computer chess gamesin linux, so that they can be running all the time and I can watch the computer play chess- preferably, a series of games that go on forever. So, if anyone wants to list themselves on the ilug-bom wiki as a FOSS resource person, please email me with your contact details. I will take the initiative to put the details up. Any resource persons are welcome, naturally enough. Coders, planners, migration specialists, or anyone a client might want to contract with. Since there are online job fora aplenty, this list should list only freelancers, at least for now. Drop me a line offlist and I'll get started! Anyone else wanting to take part of the responsibility might also want get in touch. Hi All, I'm looking to buy a linux laptop. Since my friends recommended Dell, I had a look at their options (the India site). None of them seem to come with linux. Also, I had heard about zareason. I sent them a mail asking whether they delivered to India, but they haven't replied yet. Does anyone know where to look for a laptop, preferably with linux or even without an installed OS? I came in influence of Linux and FOSS an year ago (1st year of my college, now in 2nd year) and now , an active member and contributor in its LUG there(LUG manipal http://www.lugmanipal.org). Now, after following this mailing list for more than a month a so, i think i m ready to enter it fully Will u people plz tell me how can i actively contribute in this LUG (coz its of my city)....also are there any regular meetings too?...i can attend them during my holidayz... Pratik Anand areas of interest: Bash scripting , python scripting, C/C++ coding in Qt platform, GIMP worshipper, Newer distros and desktop environments in linux(mostly in VBox), tweaking/customizations at itsvery best (like compiz, emerald etc.) and *new bash commands*......... Platforms: Windows Vista SP1, Ubuntu Studio 9.04 and Hackintosh Mac OS X, soon will be upgrading to Slackware 13....

Dics Mirroring revisited

Hi, I am still without a solution for disc mirroring.... Let me explain the setup once again. I have 2 identical PCs (same Motherboard, RAM, Processor). -- using FC9 1st one is a Primary server which is ON all the site. 2nd one is a Backup server which is only switched on when BACKUP is being taken. Rest of the time its switched off. I need to create an identical copy of the HDD of Primary PC on Sec PC. I tried Disc Image software -- "g4l". When I restore the image on the Sec PC's HDD, there is a MAC address. Is there any way to solve this problem ? Apart from RSync, is there any way to mirror DISC of 1st PC on the 2nd PC? And in such a scenario, how to address MAC address conflict issue ? Ideally, I would like a solution with least human interaction when PRI crashes and Backup PC has to be used. Pls help me! Thx

I bought an acer aspire one with linpus linux for 17.3K Working well. Superb net connectivity and wireless. Some problem with printing. CUPS doesn't recognise many HP printers. Like the colour laser 2700, HP laser 1017. Gives an error msg stating some file missing "foo....." Ashok Sinha

All at sea with the 'at' command

New Note 9 Dear linuxers! I regret to inform you that the 'at' command on my shell doesn't work. I tried stuff, of course. I checked my syntax with the man pages and even made myself an at.allow file in /etc to make AT let me use it. The atq command shows the AT jobs, without executing them. At the due time it treats the AT jobs as done. Except that nothing happens. I am using a Jaunty. Clearly, the command's alright and I'm missing some important step in the process. Could you help? squid3 with dansguardian in non-transparent mode

Hi All, I'm having squid 3.0 running on my Ubuntu 8.04 server in n NON-transperant mode. (I want it that way). I'm trying to configure the Dansguardian as a content filtering and restricting access to unwanted sites, for which I've installed Dansguardian 2.9.9.7 The DansGuardian is also seem to be configured. But it is not doing the filtering. can someone tell me how to link it with squid3 in a non-transparent mode? I'm checking with google, but everyone is talking about the transparent proxy with iptables. I don't want to do all this things. NFS error

i I have a NFS Server ( Just added an entry and started the services ) and had the Filesystem shared as : share -F nfs -o ro=MY-CLIENT-01 /u01 > showmount -e lists /u01 MY-CLIENT-01 But when i try to mount from MY-CLIENT-01 as mount -F nfs -o -rw MY-SERVER:/u01 /u01 it gives nfs mount: MY-SERVER:/u01: Permission denied - Any suggestions? -- D J GNU/Linux ! hello all, I am happy to announce that we have already gone pritty much ahead in the first deployment of GNUKhata at Comet Media Foundation and have got a few other interested parties. While this is a great news for the GNUKhata project, we have made some drastic changes to GNUKhata which has resulted in a practical improvement of the software to a large degree. Thanks to all of you specially Kenneth, JTD, Mehul and many many others. Right now we need Some people to test the new source. There are 2 branches of GNUKhata, the bleeding edge is http://gnukhata.gnulinux.in/svn/gnukhata_alpha and the stable version is http://gnukhata.gnulinux.in/svn/trunk. Some of the major improvements include the way gnukhata is installed. A database can be setup using the client itself specially on the first time lonch of the front-end. We have also incorporated a lot of things based on the feedback we hav got. I would be intersted to know how people feel about this. right now due to some reason the mailing lists are down at the sid-india server so I can't get through. Hardware Compatibility List for Debian

Hi, Maybe the question has been asked already and I could find one of the posts by Wouter Verhelst where he has mentioned about some kind of installer which can be used for Hardware Compatibility Testing. I need to deploy Debian for purpose of running a web service based application on JBoss. My first worries are about purchase of hardware for this project and I am pretty much stuck up as no major vendor except HP is providing support for Debian and pushing the idea of installing a unsupported OS to top management would not be an easy task as well. Is there any way in which I can be assured and hence push my top management to move to Debian despite it not being supported by major hardware vendors ? I know that's more of a management issue then technical but if there is someway through which I can find compatibility of Debian with different servers provided by various vendors (primarily HP, Dell and IBM) then it would be really helpful for me in decision making. I tried to install Debian 5.0 on a HCL Infinity Global Line 2700 series server and the installation went hassle free, however when I did lspci -n and tried to verify the compatibility using the web based utility provided at http://kmuto.jp/debian/hcl I was surprised to see several hardware components as not being supported. Can I consider the report displayed by http://kmuto.jp/debian/hcl as final and dump my idea of installation of Debian or will the lack of support for some of the drivers won't have much effect on functioning of my system. This is the question which is worrying me the most as of now, because I don't want my servers to hang up in middle of operations at later stage and it would be really nice if someone can help me out on this front. Also if possible please let me know how to find which all hardware is supported by a specific kernel. For e.g. I'm using kernel 2.6.22-3-486 and would like to know which all hardware components does it support. Beware of Intel 4965AGN Wifi issues

I recently came upon a weird and obscure problem with Ubuntu 9.04 and intel 4965AGN wireless adapters. Apparently in an area with a high density of access points one cannot connect. This was / is a known issue ( http://bugzilla.intellinuxwireless.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1885 ). I believe this maybe a regression. I switched to Fedora 11 and kernel 2.6.29 and upwards dont exhibit the same issue. Just a heads up for everyone! -- Regards, Dinesh A. Joshi

Ubuntu 9.04 / Karmic Koala Alpha4

Wanted to give ubuntu a spin. So downloaded the ubuntu-9.04-desktop-i386.iso and burned to cd. Then booted. Splash screen comes up with the language option followed by Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer. Then nothing. Hit enter. still nothing Check all the options and try to edit the command line. No go. Same with karmic Koala Alpha4 so what witch craft is needed to proceed beyond the splash screen? -- Rgds JTD

Hi, Have you investigated these fonts: Gargi, Lohit Hindi (FOSS) and Shivaji or Shusha (proprietary). Keymaps are different to fonts. A keymap is the relationship between keyboard keys and alphabets. E.g-- in Hindi bolnagri, type p and you get the hindi letter 'pa'. In Remington, typing p will yield some other letter. Type in whatever keymap you want. It's up to you. Just make sure, before saving the file, select the text and you save it in the above fonts. If you want to email the doc/odf file, simply also email the font. When the recipients install that font, they will be able to read your document. Hope this helps.

Wiki: Protected mode? Block it?

List, I've been trying to clean spam for quite sometime (months?) but the attacks have increased severely. It actually doesn't make sense to just manually delete every page created by the bot, because it is easy for the bot to do it, but it a tedious process to clean it and wait for its next attack! Is there a 'protected-mode' for this wiki, for the time-being till it is upgraded? Or can it be blocked, till it is upgraded to a better CMS? I guess, I may be asking for too much, but the wiki needs to be saved from spam bots. Can the super-admins block the wiki? or do something like that? -- Roshan Baladhanvi

any tool to split and join large files

In windows there were many GUI programs that could split large files and then join the fragments as required. But i couldnot find any programs in ubuntu/linux yet. "split" works only for text files, i think and so does "join" on the commandline. It would be good to know about some GUI programs which could give similar functionality as found under windows applications. Kussh

Flag to detect presence of usb modem?

Hello, What is the system's flag to detect the presence and absence of a usb modem that gets up on /dev/ttyACM0 when plugged in? I need to put that line in a cron based script running every minute to automatically trigger a dialup connection whenever a usb modem is plugged in and shut it down whenever it is pulled out. The recent flood on 'visarjan' day has knocked out my client's telephone lines and triband too has stopped after the 24 hour period. I don't want to give any admin access to the users. Whenever triband will be down, this usb modem will be their alternate connection. Simply plug it in and use. I only need the line to check for the presence and absence of a usb modem on ttyACM0. Need help with writing a shell script

Dear linuxers, Needing to regularly backup my work, and having recently developed an interest in shell commands, I wrote myself a script that backed up a particular file; renamed the previous backup; and then unmounted the pen drive. Fairly beginner stuff but a time-and-effort-saver. I was wondering if I could add to this script the capability to make a net backup-- invoke wvdial, fire up evolution; in evolution, mail to gmail; then close evolution; then close wvdial (I use Rel. Netconnect, so wvdial); and write me a logfile which I could check. I'm on Ubuntu 9.04. I'd heard that g/lin is great for automating stuff like this. Would appreciate your help. Press Release A delegation of seven educationists and activists from Mumbai met the Secretary, School Education, Government of Maharashtra, Shri Sanjay Kumar, at the Mantralaya on 2nd September at 3pm. Their aim was to express their critique of the proposed agreement between the state and a multinational corporation in the area of ICTs in education and to offer an alternative based of Free and Open Source Software. The attached representation (PDF) was submitted to him by the group, who consisted of : Nagarjuna G., Free Software Foundation, India Padma Sarangapani, Tata Institute of Social Sciences Ravi Subramaniam, Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, TIFR J T de Souza GNU/Linux Users Group, Mumbai Chandita Mukherjee, Comet Media Foundation Sridhar Iyer, IIT Bombay and Sahana Murthy, IIT Bombay. During the meeting, the Secretary informed the delegation that the State government is aware of the pitfalls of working with corporates and is willing to consider alternatives approaches to introducing ICTs in education on a large scale, if any group proposes them. The Govt, he said, will work with all interested parties and will be inclusive in their approach. When told that in the current Maharashtra standard 8 text book, for example, there are brand names mentioned in the text and logos shown in the illustrations, he said that their department does not interfere with textbook content, since that is looked after by the experts of the Maharastra Text Book Bureau. When we suggested that it was the Education Department's role to set policy guidelines, such as not to carry brand names, the Secretary agreed with this in in principle. We suggested that we can help in (i) designing a curriculum for students that focusses on broad concepts from ICT that help develop thinking skills, as well as specific usage skills, (ii) writing books that can implement this curriculum, in a vendor-neutral manner, (iii) designing curriculum for teachers and iv) implementing teacher training programmes After listening to the delegation, the Secretary asked us to submit a proposal to contribute to the effective dissemination of ICT skills within the school system in Maharashtra . The team agreed to do this within two weeks and to subsequently explore possibilities of reaching an MoU with the Government of Maharashtra. We are connected in star topology with no domain controller. All the computers are connected to workgroup. The Mail server (Ubuntu Server 8.04LTS+Postfix) runs on vmware running on Win2k pro with bridge network configuration. Certain computers have access to internet but when the mailsever is working we are unable to access the net . We need to shutdown the VM / computer to be able to access the net. I did a http sniff from my 'Host' OS which was showing unusual amount of traffic been sent out by the mailserver. I felt it was because of a bounced mail which it keeps trying to send repeatedly, so I created a local mail archiving address , but this too does not solve the problem. All computers access the internet via a netgear router. Before a computer crash the same mailserver image used to work fine. Dear Members, I am facing a very strange problem. I have set up a small mail server for my organization running of ubuntu 8.04LTS server using postfix & dovecot +Get mail It downloads mail from our mail server and passes to local users .Outgoing mail has to be routed via ISP (sify's) SMTP server . The whole thing runs on vmware server 2.0 When the mail server is on the the rest of the organization cannot access mail , the moment I turn off the VM image , all of us get the access. All the computers are connected to net via a netgear router acting as gateway. I tried http sniff and found huge amounts of data going through the server though no one seems to have sent anything.. Folks, I travel from Pune to Mumbai and back regularly. I don't reserve tickets usually, but I thought of doing so this time. I booked my tickets through the MSRTC Volvo online reservation center at Parihar Chowk, Aundh. To my surprise, I was in for a shock. They were using Mozilla Firefox as the browser and the application was made in PHP. Wow! I was initially assuming that the Firefox was used on Windows, but when I went close, I realized, it was Fedora Linux. Wow! Amazing Superb! I'm so happy to see something like this! There was an interesting turn of phrase in Mr. Rony's email, the one in which he refers to Slax as a 'bomb' with a positive connotation. Now in American and British English, to bomb or to have bombed is a slang term for a flop. If you have noted any new/ potentially new phrases of slang in Indian English, but preferably those more directly related to F/OSS than the above hypothetical example, would you consider dropping me a line? With a large enough number of samples, a collaborative glossary of FOSS slang from India could be compiled and released under a Creative Commons/FreeDoc license. Samba server

Hi, I have a samba server which is servicing window and linux machines. This server has /temp directory with 777 permission. This directory is used for file sharing among all users. This directory is shared in samba with file creation mask 755. When window machine writes to it, the file is correctly created as 755, but when linux machine writes to it the file is created as 700. This file can not be read by other users. What needs to be done for linux machine to write as 755? Thanks in advance for the suggestions. Hi, I use AutoIT to develop small windows applications which make life simpler. One such application I developed & use is a "PrintScreenRecorder". Its a small application which resides in the system tray and activates when "F1" is pressed. The application will simulate a "ALT + PrintScreen" key press, start paint.exe, paste the image in paint and then save it as .jpg. This prevents me from doing all this manually. I know, there are 100s of better ways of doing this using windows function, DLL and what not; but you see, I am not a programmer. I just use simple tools like AutoIT3 which helps a non-programmer like me to do all with in about 30-60 minutes of time using simple BASIC like scripting. I do not need knowledge of VB, .NET, DLLs, and so much more. I have numerous such application which make life of a layman like me so much more simpler . Once I move to Linux Desktop, I will need some such tools (like AutoIT3) which can help me develop such small applications. Doing my bit on google, I have come across programming languages like Python, Ruby, C, C++. For creating GUIs, I am suggested Qt / GTK. But I need some simple scripting tools which can help me create such applications without having to learn Python, Ruby, C, C++ in detail. I am sure there are application (like AutoIT3) which will help me create small GUI based application for my linux desktop. Application which can interact with MySQL, Firefox, OS functions etc. Seeking help from Linux experts who can point me to such tools which will help me. Thx Sandeep

Hello, I have to setup a firewall box for someone ASAP and I was going through the tutorials at http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=16166 I just have a small query as I am confused with the directions of packets. When setting a rule for the INPUT table, there is a source and destination setting. From the examples given in the above tutorial, when an incoming packet is received, the source is a local IP and destination is the world. Shouldn´t the incoming packet´s source be the world and destination the local LAN IP address? Could the experts please clarify? Otherwise it seems quite easy to setup. -- Regards, Rony. Hi group, Is there any tool to set all music/audio files to a certain amplitude? While hearing music files, the amplitude changes from one file to another due to which the volume has to be manually adjusted. I tried normalize-audio but maybe don't know whether it will do the job or how to use it properly. Would appreciate any help if a tool can be applied on a set of files in batch mode. Thanks Kussh

Eureka! Firewall set up.

Hello, Finally I was able to code the firewall exactly as it is intended to operate. It was tough and I even tried to cheat by using Firestarter on a live session and copy the resulting codes, but they turned out to be even more complex than what I wanted. Even tried Shorewall but it did not suit my purpose. I was almost giving up but finally got the wall up. Now I have understood the main concepts and what goes to which table/chain. In this setup, there are 15 machines in a LAN and except 4 senior users, no one had internet access. However the company decided to get a remote office setup at their website and everyone would pass on memos, to-dos, jobs etc through it. Therefore net access had to be enabled but only to that website. The 4 main users would still have to be allowed to go anywhere on the net. -- Regards, Rony. GNU/Linux ! Data recovery after formatting ext3 to ex4 partition

Actually while installing ubuntu 9.04 , installer misbehaved with me and formatted my /home partition and thus i lost my valueble data. the new partition is ext4 type. Random Observations

Hello, I had bought this month's Digit magazine which had 3 distro ISOs in one DVD. OpenSuse, Fedora11 (live+Install) and Ubuntu 9.04 (Live+Install). Thankfully, the ISOs did not throw up any md5sum errors. First the Fedora live cd was booted. Everything came up fine. I checked out the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts folder to check out the ifup-eth0 file but was surprised to see that there was no such file. The command ifconfig threw up the eth0 details. The networking was taken over by 'Network-Manager', the gui utility for gnome. Then Firefox was tried out. It was 3.5 Beta4. Sites opened lightning fast. Out of curiosity I checked out the dns entries in resolv.conf and saw the following DNS server entries (using dhcp). 59.185.0.23 and 59.185.0.50. Then I logged into my MTNL Triband modem to discover that I had earlier disabled DNS relay and my preferred DNS servers were the 203.94..... entries. In the modem's interface however, the DNS is 59.183.63.254. I wonder how 59.185.0.23 got into the DNS entries of the computer. However I am happy as these servers seem to be very quick. The Ubuntu 9.04 cd was then booted and even here the DNS entries were 59.185.0.23 and 50. Again, the sites opened very fast. As with Fedora11, the /etc/network/interfaces file had only one entry for lo. There was no entry for eth0. The observations made were. 1. MTNL's new DNS servers 59.185.0.23 & 50 are very fast and those entries should replace the traditional 203.94... entries in machines with static ips. Before this, at 2 of my clients' places I had to use the open dns ip as the secondary dns entry for sites to open at least. Now I can try out these new IPs. 2. The gui networking utilities have completely taken over the traditional distro network config files and we don't even know how these GUIs are storing their config files to be able to read/modify them. I recollect, before throwing out knetwork-manager from my Lenny, I had a tough time trying to locate the config files for the same and even googling did not help. -- Regards, Rony. GNU/Linux ! Hi Folks, Recently I got a solution from Sift Authorities regarding Sify Connect, as I complained them about the buggy Linux Dialer. The responded by enabling my id for the web based connector http://202.144.65.70:8090/login_rest.php This is similar to standalone client, instead it opens in web browser and so is good alternative as a cross platform connector, which means no extra back ground processes. I have installed ubuntu 8.10 on EE Box. The EEE box is 160GB Atom Processor Based system with 1 Gb Ram & 4 Usb out of which 2 are occupied by keyboard & mouse. The Vista Box is hosting the ftp using filezilla . I have tried another ftp software too. but Linuxrc always comes with no repository found error I want to do a ftp install or a usb Install. It will help my future migrations. Please give me a solution where I can make the installer using windows box. Kiwi thing will work only when I have a suse machine .. need help on dep packaging for gnukhata.

hello all, I created the much awaited deb packages for GNUKhata. thy are right now available at http://kk.hipatia.net/public/gnukhata/ (/ at the end needs to be included ). I am facing a few problems as this is actually the very first time that I am building deployment quality deb packages. Right now the way those packages are built, I am sure that they only work on ubuntu 9.04 or perhaps the latest debian. I want to make GNUKhata work on ubuntu 9.04, 8.04 LTS, and also on debian. Can some one volantear for helping me do this? Further more, regarding daemons, I checked on the links provided by siddhesh and JTD in particular. the tutorials were good to understand basic daemon creation. But there are 2 major problems. Firstly GNUKhata is not a c program but an interprited python based application. So daemonising it is alltogether a different ball game. Secondly, if some one could help out in the deb and rpm (deb on priority ), then I would also like to know if there is a way out to write some code that automates the setup completely? For example on any distro the server deb package should first check for dependencies and install them if necessary, then create the gnukhata user, which is dedicated to run the gnukhata application server. Then the deb file should also generate the basic database and add the necessary tables. Is this possible to do with a deb file? I am sure then we can easily make an rpm by even using alien or some other software. Any help from Kartik, Rajiv or any one would be appreciated. As I mentioned the rudimentary deb packages are available at the url given at the top of this email. Help me to help making GNUKhata deployable. Thanks in advance. happy hacking. Krishnakant.

Struggle with OpenSuse Network Install

Goal : To be able to setup OpenSuse11.1 DVD version on my EEEBox first & then on other computers using ftp install , my Vista Laptop running Filezilla or xlight will do the FTP work I have tried a lot of things to boot the OS using Pen drive but always ended up on the linuxrc screen To avoid the "SHA1 Sum wrong" error I now Type "Linux install insecure=1",but I still get "No Repository Found". I have extracted the OpenSuse DVD ISO using 7zip and put it in d:\xampp\htdocs\download So for ftp the path is ftp://192.168.0.101/ & for http://192.168.0.101/download I have made \htdocs\download home directory for ftp Both Ftp & HTTP install start but end with error "no repos... found" I have also tried copying the ISO content into USB, renaming isolinux.cfg to syslinux.cfg & using syslinux to make it bootable. Dear Members, I want to Install OpenSuse 11.1 on my EEE B202 having only LAN & USB . I have the following Hardware at my disposal My Laptop with Vista Business ,This laptop has the DVD ISO image of 11.1. I have a 8GB USB Pen Drive too. So far I tried Unetbootin ( downloaded from Sf.net) to make USB image for open suse but does not work , but I am able to get into "linux rc" using it I then started FTP server on the my WinBox and extracted the ISO to a folder using 7zip . The Linux rc opens the ftp server & then it pops up an error " NO repository found" or "Ftp://192.168.0.100/%2Fboot/i386/branding SHA1 Sum Wrong" After this it exists setup ,How can I solve this.. A question on security.

Hi All, Today a friend of mine showed me a security feature in Windows XP, which to my knowledge is not available under Linux.(Please tell me I am wrong). So here goes, he showed me a security feature in Windows XP wherein the user can setup a custom access to their own files and restrict access to others, including Adminstrators. Is there a way to do so in GNU/Linux systems (for root)? As I am not aware of any means, I was not able to give him any answers. This feature came to light when we were discussing our Company's adoption of IS)-27001. He has also claimed that this is also the reason why Linux adoption in Enterprises is very low. Hi, An acquaintance of mine works for a Mumbai based NGO[1]. They are looking to replace (and add additional features to) an existing application that they use to record and manage their data (I don't know the exact details about this yet). The current application they use was built by a couple of guys using ASP+MS SQL. They do not have the source code for the current application. So, they are looking to: a. Replicate all the functionality of the current application. b. Migrate the current data to the new application. c. Add a new module which provides a workflow similar to the existing one. d. Design the application in such a manner that allows addition of further workflows. e. Provide support and feature enhancement (for something like 5+ years) They also would like to share this application with their offices worldwide if they find it useful enough for their purposes. I strongly recommended that they go the Open source way by asking whichever vendor they choose to provide them with the source code under a FOSS license. I further recommended that they insist on building the application using FOSS (for instance, a LAMP stack). Now, since they are non-technical per se and it seems like their original software provider is no longer 'available', they need guidance/advice for the specifications itself. So, here's my request, can somebody in Mumbai ... a. Be willing to visit this organization, take a look at their existing application and advise them on the best (FOSS oriented) approach to take ? (It'll be nice if someone can do this without slapping a consulting fee on them). b. Build this application and provide the required support (This, of course, would be a regular business contract). Obviously, (a) and (b) can be the same person/company. using orca to read pdf files in evince

Hi, I cud get orca to start up and have configured it. But it is not able to read any page which is open in the evince document reader. The key binding for "reading entire document" is KP_add. I wonder what that means. Can anybody help?. Orca is only able to read menus or echo typed characters, words etc and that too is hardly heard (voice is cut). Regards, Kussh

Hi all, Does anybody know of any FOSS program in linux which can convert from flv format (video) to mp3 or ogg (audio) format. I am using the file conversion service at zamzar.com and it takes pretty long to upload large files. It would be nice if there was a program for this sort of work. Also earlier i had heard about a site to convert pdfs to mp3 files but can't seem to find the site. if anybody knows of a good site or software pls let me know. Dear Rony, Since the data file is on windows server I mount the CIFS to linux & I have pointed Tally.ini to see the mount z:\mnt\Tally I am able to see the contents in Tally , but it frequently crashes or hangs and takes a lot of time to load the data. Hi I understand that MNS has filed a case in High Court at Mumbai against the online college admission process for Jr. College in Mumbai. the case is both against the government and the company that made the online software / website for creating a complete mess. Dovecot Time moved backwards error

Dear Members, I have setup a small mail server for my office on ubuntu server "Hardy" running on vmware. It runs postfix +Dovecot +getmail + squirremail. Dear Members, I have installed Interprid Ubuntu Desktop on My EEE PC B202 which is Atom 1.6Ghz I want to use Tally 9 ERP on it. I Installed Wine from the package manager & Installed Tally on it. Tally opens fast but it does not open the data file fast, It hangs , the data files are on a windows share which I have mounted on to /mnt/Tally The same thing works ok on another desktop using Interprid , please help with the settings ? strange case of chm files which don't open correctly

Recently had gone over to linuxappfinder.com and was seeing the software collection of alternatives to windows softwares. Came across free-cad.sourceforge.net. Downloaded the help documentation in chm format (bottom, right corner of the home page under most downloaded section). Tried opening the CHM file with xchm. It opens as a plain text file with all the html tags etc. Maybe there are better (more uptodate) chm readers available now than the xchm I am now using. If anybody knows of such softwares, pls let me know. Earlier (on another computer while using ubuntu 8.10 or 8.04) i had come across another chm/ebook reader software using synaptic but haven't installed it yet on the 9.04 computer. Thanks, Kussh

setup vlc as my default multimedia application in ubuntu9.04

Right now totem is set as the default application for all multimedia related files and it does not work as it should--i.e. there is no sound when any multimedia file is opened--even for ogg or wav files. Video files run but without any sound. I can't get totem to work correctly but vlc works perfectly. I tried all the usual tricks--install the bad files, restricted formats, etc etc but totem does not work. gxine and others also work but totem does not. So my question is --which configuration file needs to be tweaked such that all multimedia formats by default open with VLC and not with totem? am using ubuntu9.04 and have an integrated sound card on an asus motherboard. Have changed the properties of most multimedia formats in nautilus to open with VLC instead of totem by default but there are cases such as while using search or other applications (such as kalarm) where the default system program for multimedia (ie totem) gets activated. Relax Folks, I never thought that my simple questions would lead to such a huge debate. My questions were very simple. And I got the answer too through these discussions. So I have come to this point (please correct me if am wrong or misinterpreted) 1. Just like Microsoft, Red Hat has a per machine License system (thats what its EULA specifies I suppose). This has nothing to do with trade mark, copyright etc etc. but Violation of EULA 2. Copying RH from the original CD (or using the same CD) and installing it on another Machine for which the License payment has not be done is similar to installing Windows from original or (copied CD) on to other unlicensed systems. This is refered to as Piracy I suppose. 3. On the machines without License, users cant get access to Microsoft Updates (including security, service packs, Internet Explorer, Media Player, etc.) as the MS website checks for Genuineness of the installed Windows. So if a user wants those premium facilities, then he/she will have to obviously pay for that in form of License thats what is referred to as Subscriptions in terms of Red Hat where the User needs to pay for support and upgrades. 4. Microsoft I have heard visits its clients (corporates) to audit whether they have installed their products on systems exceding than those permitted in the EULA, if found then the clients are Fined. There is a similar clause in Red Hat EULA (discussed in earlier threads). So from a Regular (Desktop) End User perspective I can understand that Microsoft:Windows and Red Hat:Linux Although we dont have an option of FREE Windows, we though have option for FREE Linux alternatives like Debian, CentOS, Fedora, Ubuntu, Open Suse, etc. So I think thats what answers the question. The objective of improving communication skills is so that one can understand and convey specs etc. If a person is skilled enough that he can convey ideas in imperfect english mixed with mumbaiya lingo ('kya baap, khali pili pointer ko null pe set karta hai. Runtime pe lafda ho jayenga.'), that is fine, as long as the person on the receiving end understands it. If you're working in a team, the team members must understand this too :P Of course, once we are past that stage, we'll understand that the best way to communicate is the most concise and precise way, so that most of the people reading it get the message. And that's where grammar comes in. The big point is that lack of communication skills is one of the big obstacles because of which deserving people do not achieve their potential. People must have enough communication skills to be effective in their work. Mentoring, as Mani points out could be an effective way of improving communication skills, but responsibility also lies with the mentee. I'm reminded of this old joke: Q: How many psychiatrists does it take to change a light bulb? A: Just one, but the bulb has to want to change.

Why are communication skills important in Software Development? Comprehension and verbal skills are required to read and understand, as well as convey: a. Requirements b. Specifications c. Books, articles and manuals d. Bug reports e. Project Plans f. Achievements g. Difficulties and obstacles coming in way of goals h. and more... More importantly, good communication skills help a developer prioritize tasks better. A good communicator can better grasp the urgency/importance of a particular situation or feature. And of course, innumerable other reasons. Now, one thing I have noticed is that there are many software developers, those with excellent academic records, who could be brilliant programmers or testers, if only their communication skills were better. Often such 'latent' good programmers find their way into organizations of all shapes and sizes. Sadly, more often than not, such professionals are unable to achieve their potential because of their Achilles' Heel: Communication. Often we hear reports of speeches by industry leaders or top managers who have said that graduates from <insert country or state or university> are unemployable. My belief is that the students have the fundamental material built in, but are only hampered by lack of good communication skills. Responsible organizations will want such people to achieve their potential. What are the options open to such organizations? Classroom Training? Online Training? I will appreciate if other people who have thought about this issue could contribute their opinion. If anyone has links to online articles which address this issue or online training programs, that would be very helpful.

Hi Folks, One of my friend was arguing me that RED HAT is superior to any of the FREELY available Linux Distro as it provides Support (although in form of Subscriptions). However I told him that he can get free community support for many other free distros and more over they are Open Source. Now for this he said that Red Hat too is open Source, and he has got one installed in his home through a CD provided by his institute where he is studying REHL. I asked him, whether he needed to enter Serial Key like Windows, he replied no, but he wont be able to use their support. So I told him that he is using a PIRATED version of LINUX. HE said yes. I went ahead to cross check Red Hat License Agreement, and saw it to be similar to Microsoft's EULA that states, you cannot install it on more computers than the licensed purchased for etc. Secondly if the Subscription expires, the OS will no longer be Legal until its renewed (similar to Norton Anti Virus) So my question is... Can Red Hat enterprise products be really considered as Open Source (as their website claims) http://investors.redhat.com/index.cfm *Red Hat is the world's leading open source provider. Bringing the choice, collaboration, cost savings and value of open source to enterprises worldwide. Please contact me offlist/directly if you have implemented: LDAP authentication, using Mac OSX 10.5 server with it's bundled Open Directory as the backend to authenticate users on Linux, OSX (10.4 and 10.5) desktops, and Windows XP SP3 desktops. A client has a setup of heterogenous desktop setup and wants to implement Directory Services for the organization. The composition is 80% Linux desktop + 2 Linux File servers (NFS+Samba), 7 OSX desktops and 5 Windows XP desktops). The user's Unix (Linux/OSX) profile is portable to the respective platform via LDAP and Windows profile is portable through Samba. Samba+LDAP back end needs to be configured on 2 Linux file servers as well on the OSX server (for user's home dir). -- Arun Khan PS - I have already tried openLDAP (on Linux), works with Linux desktops, OSX clients see the LDAP server but do not authenticate from the graphical login window.

Hi folks, While going through that Red Hat License discussion, I had completely forgotten that there was a thread regarding FYJC being restricted to IE Users (how mean of them!) Here's the solution to open it in Firefox. Based on these explainations: ========================================================================================================================== Now that we've cleared that up, here is a simplified (IMHO) explanation of what everybody already said: RHEL == Linux Kernel + GPL/BSD/MIT ...etc licensed Software + Red Hat trademarks (artwork etc) - How must does the RHEL distro cost ? * 0/- - How does Red Hat make money, if the cost of the RHEL distro is 0 ? * Subscriptions, trainings, consultancy ...and maybe more. - How is the RHEL distro. distrubuted ? * The sources are available for free on redhat.com and Red Hat provides CDs/DVDs of the distro. to it's customers (people who buy subscriptions or undertake trainings ...etc) ================================================================================================================= Can somebody explain the following clauses in Red Hat License Agreement? http://www.redhat.com/licenses/rhel_us_3.html 5 Reporting and Inspection 5.1 Reporting. Client will promptly notify Red Hat if the number of Installed Systems exceeds the number of Installed Systems for which Client has paid the applicable fee. In its notice, Client will include both the number of additional Installed Systems and the date(s) on which such Installed Systems were put into use. Red Hat will invoice Client for the applicable Services for such Installed Systems on a pro-rata basis and Client will pay for such Services in accordance with this Agreement. 5.2 Inspection. During the term of this Agreement and for one (1) year thereafter, Red Hat or its designated agent may inspect and review Client's facilities and records in order to verify Client's compliance with this Agreement. BSNL punjab circle has recently introduced a scheme where they are giving broadband speed of around 2.4 Mbps at unlimited download for just Rs 550 per month thru a wireless CDMA data card made by ZTE china. The wireless card can be purchased for Rs 4200 and the data connectivity is limited to just the punjab telecom circle. This scheme has not been publicised and has been in operation for the last 3-4 months. I came to know about it by chance thru word of mouth and the demand is very high but supply very less. The problem is that i haven't been able to install it using wine etc in ubuntu 9.04 with the installation CD Can anybody help if they have installed/configured the same in ubuntu 9.04 etc? Kussh

Hi Guys, i want create multiple profile on a single linux machine(server class) so that multiple users can access the it (GUI ) from their client machines. Server OS is CentOS 5.3 For centralize authentication i am using Fedora directory Services I also have FreeNX server installed on the Linux Server and FreeNX client on the windows machines. Last year, 2008, the fyjc admission was made online using FOSS. The software is available for any one for asking. I was the architect on behalf of the government. I was instrumental in turning the decision of autorites from not going in for online to going in for online this year. That is when my contribution ended. Last year we used the latest MySQL (5.0) when our engineers had not enough experience( was that a sensible decision ? I feel yes as it was essentially a pilot) . It took two days to locate MySQL expert who was familiar with settings ( Courtesy Dainik Bhaskar) and the dying server revived in 10 minutes. While comparing last year with this, one may note the following: (not as excuses for failures) We had an entrepreneur to come forward taking no money from the government, no assurance of students using the system . It was optional. The physical form filling was alternative. The charges for service was Rs 5 , with exemption for first two applications. Instead , this year the centralised admission makes online compulsory for about 2 lakh students (after discounting the minority seats of about 1.5 lakhs.) Each student has to pay Rs 125/- The undersigned had offered the services for the govt as honorary. This time I was called in initial meetings. But later I was dropped. I may get a call again, I am told. What is at stake is faith of people in technology in mass usage. Also whether FOSS can serve better? jitendra

Printing to a Print Server

Dear All, I need to print to a Print Server, The print server is simply a Box with 3 ports to connect the printers (2 USB + 1 Serial). In Windows XP, the procedure to setup the printer is to install a driver for the print server called EZ Print by SMC. Create a Connection as if it is local and give the IP:Port Number to the configuration. Install the driver for the Printer and you are set. I have added a printer for ipp print using the CUPS web interface with the device URI as http://<IP>:631/ipp/PID<PortNumber> as int the windows printer configuration it looks like <IP>;PID<PortNumber>. The Error I get is Remote Device not Available. Current Device URI: http://<IP>:631/<PortNumber> I have tried many permutations and combinations and now Cups keeps on trying and remains at Processing and does nothing further. The following ports are open on the Print server. Telnet HTTP 80 Printer 515 IPP 631 Connecting to the Telnet/HTTP Port gives me the Admin menu for the Print Server. Any pointers will be welcome. hi, I just upgraded my FC10 to FC11. Booted from dvd and chose 'upgrade'. After upgrade, I did yum update. And my open office 2.x got replaced by 3.x, all my address books, book marks, passwords etc were all in the correct places. Everything worked out of the box. Obviously this is a bug. How do I report it and get it rectified. (Sorry, my device support only top posting) The term Open Source was coined by some members of the Free Software movement around 1998. This was started as a campaign to promote Free Software among businesses by not talking about ethical aspects, but only practical benefits of Free Software developing methods. Many people becomes uncomfortable, especially businesses, when talking about ethical responsibilities, so some people thought it would help the movement not to talk about uncomfortable things if the end result is larger community. But practically all open source code out these - using licences approved by open source initiative - is also free software - using licenses approved by free software foundation. Only exception is reciprocal license, which is considered as open source but not free software. But there is not much code that uses this licenses. What Krishnakanth was talking about is copyleft. Free Software foundation encourages everyone to use a copyleft license to protect the commons, but it is not a mandatory requirement for a free software. I suggest every one to read the free software definition again. BSD licensed code is as much free software as GPL licensed code. Hi, I have a web server which has CentOS Linux 2.6.18-028stab059.6-ent kernel and Apache 1.3.37 running on it. 2 days back I got one script to test DoS attack on website. It is called slowloris.pl from http://ha.ckers.org/slowloris/ I run that script against my server and it worked. It stopped my website for some time. That time all other services like SSH were working fine. Can anybody suggests any configuration changes at Apache and OS/Kernel level to prevent from this type of attack ? Hello, Some time back I had put up a challenge to the list to install Open Office 3 in Ubuntu 8.04 and looks like no one has been able to do that. Well in Windows XP you simply uninstall the older Open Office version and install the latest version. You could even install OOo3 over the older 2.x version. So on _this_ point I declare Windows XP the winner. ;-) On Saturday I have to remove Ubuntu 8.04 from 5 machines and install Ubuntu 9.04 simply because upgrading Open Office is not possible in Linux. -- Regards, Rony. Hi, I have installed voyage linux on thinclient. I have installed rdesktop and Xorg on it. However coz of space issue I couldnt install any window manager on it. So I have to connect Windows server from CLI only. I tried following command: $ rdesktop -f <server ip>:3389 It shows "ERROR: Failed to open display" Is there any work around to resolve this issue without changing any hardware? Problem with Division

Hi, I'm sorry if this question has been asked before but I couldn't find any appropriate answer elsewhere and hence this post. Today while doing some calculation using bc I found a very peculiar thing. I was performing an operation -2 % -3 and the software reported the answer as -2. Now -2 > -3 and if I remember correctly then in divison operation the remainder is less than the divisor. So how come in this case the answer is not coming properly.
