Hi All, I am using an IBall Marshall Dual Core Laptop, it does not alllow the install of Linux as the installer, irrespective of the linux flavor hangs up, can anyone suggest a way to install Linux in the system. Most linux installers hang up without any error message I have tried the noapic and nolapic options in boot parameters with Ubuntu The BIOS is a Phoenix BIOS, but SIW reports it as COMPAL BIOS at present, it has windows installed in it and working fine Regards Surya Pratap

Setting up the network

Hi, I am trying to setup network to access the guest running on VirtualBox from internet. My current setup is as follows :- eth1 - Internet eth0 - LAN I set up network to work properly on VirtualBox following the how-to on gentoo-wiki[1] and was able to access the guest from outside. But, since eth0 is bridged to br0, the other PC on the LAN isn't able to access the internet. I don't have any more network cards. What would be the best way to tackle this? Should I create eth1:0? Open Street Mapping Questions

Hey, Since many people on this list have attended workshops or even done some mapping/tracing work, I thought I would ask some questions here - 1) Suppose you are walking on a particular street - 2 way street even - you encounter a few shops - say a big Sweet and Snacks / Hotel / School / anything, on the same street. Now how do you put those on the maps while GPS tracking and then tracing the map on the computer? I mean, the to reach the shop, you have to walk good 5 meters or such - at times - depending on width of foot path or such. Now those paths are not roads really, and they can vary from place to place. How to tackle such offsets ? 2) Suppose you have tracked certain part of your town or your route from your home to airport near your city. Then you fly to another city and then restart the GPS device. At that point the device generally has to re-initiate itself to capture/detect the satellites ( which it has to do anyway incase you turn off and then switch on a gps device - atleast in some devices that I have seen ). Anyway after it has done that, it calculates the Longitude and Latitude and hence the current position. What happens in this case is, the GPS device draws a straight line from City A to City B. Is there a way to avoid that / tackle that ? Any pointers ? Thanks in advance. Cheers! Xaralx Graphics Software

Hello, I came across a graphics software thats open source. It is called open source Xara Extreme. It can be downloaded as a tar.bz2 file that is a self running program. Simply go to the bin folder and double click on the xaralx file. You will need to install imagemagick first and its available in your distro's respective repository. I know this for sure that when the PC's ethernet card is connected to the DSL modem/router's ethernet port in "bridge" mode, the WAN IP appears on the PC's NIC i.e. the PC become visible on the 'Net. Likewise, is the same true when the PC is connected to the DSL modem/router using the USB ports on the respective devices? To the best of my knowledge the answer is yes but need to confirm it from the device gurus :) TIA -- Arun Khan

Hi, I was reading about Negroponte's one laptop per child. Now that is the USA / western / nuclear family concept. I would be happy with one laptop/computer per family. Now, if we added 50 million computers to India at Rs 5000 to Rs 9000 each we would not need connectivity to the internet. Please contribute to our discussion on the google group "open-mobile". Charitable inclinations do not give 50 million computers connected via mesh (free) networking to India. Here is a note on mesh computing from one laptop per child. Erach 2.9 Wireless Mesh Network Interface The wireless network interface used by CL1 operates as a conventional WiFi (802.11b/g) interface, yet provides several unique features crucial to the laptop's goals. Unlike traditional wireless networking, where laptops only communicate with network access points, the CL1 supports wireless mesh networking, where laptops may relay network packets for other laptops, greatly extending the reach of any network access points. In order to encourage a mesh network, the CL1 network interface is also designed for low power operation as a mesh node, even when the laptop is powered off. The mesh networking protocol is currently a variant of the upcoming 802.11s mesh networking standard. The CL1 will support 802.11s, when ratified, through a firmware upgrade. The current protocol and the 802.11s may be simultaneously supported at this time. Unlike traditional laptop wireless networking interfaces, the CL1 wireless mesh networking interface includes a processor capable of forwarding packets and maintaining mesh routing tables, independent of any other laptop resources. The network interface is notified when the main processor is entering/exiting suspend mode and it is capable of notifying the embedded controller that a network event requiring attention (such as a packet destined for the laptop) has occurred. While it is possible for this interface to operate even when the laptop is completely powered off, firmware currently limits operation of the network to when the laptop is either powered on or suspended. For operation in 802.11b mode, the RF output power is 17 dBm (+/- 1.5 dBm), with a receiver sensitivity of –87 dBm. In 802.11g mode, the RF output power is 13 dBm (+/- 1.5 dBm), with a receiver sensitivity of –72 dBm. Figure 2.9: External Antenna

HP 915 prints in GNU/Linux

Hello, A client of mine uses Ubuntu 7.04 and his PSC is HP 915. On visiting www.openprinting.org I was able to install the ppd file for 915 and printing was setup without any hiccups. Epson LX1050+ printing with very small fonts.

OS: Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, Gnome desktop. Over the phone, I walked a client, through the printer installation of Epson LX1050+ printer. During installation, I asked him to chose the recommended driver for the LX1050 that comes bundled with CUPS and to print a test page. The test page printed fine. Now he is complaining that it is printing very small fonts irrespective of the application i.e. Firefox, OO Writer. This is the first time I have installed a dot matrix printer (and that too by proxy). Logically, things should print per font settings in the application if the test page prints. I would appreciate any pointers to what printer settings I should be looking for to fix the problem. Thanks in advance. -- Arun Khan

His target audience were newbies presently using Windows. He had two presentations. One highlighting the benefits of GNU Linux over windows and the other one demonstrating the installation procedure. He used Ubunutu for all his illustrations. Easwar plans to hold a Ubuntu Install fest at his college. He plans to give a presentation about Linux and also offer to install Ubuntu for anyone whose interested. Anyone wanting to help him in this can contact him directly. Easwar's presentation was discussed and it received inputs from everyone. Arun and Vikram had prior experience in advocating Open Source Software to people so they shared some of their experiences with everyone. Next everyone was introduced to Ms. Chanditta. She works for an organization that regularly holds workshops training people in Open Source Software. She is basically from the Media Industry and plans to open an institute in which she plans to incorporate Open Source Software. Although she is going to post her plans on the Mailing List shortly, she is currently looking for volunteers. She requires people who might be interested in teaching or helping out in her workshops. They hold workshops providing guidance about OSS to teachers , both from educational institutions as well as NGOs. Arun then spoke about his recent experience in converting a customer to OSS and the resistance he faced while doing that. He finally managed to convince the customer after a Live Demo. Different methods of spreading Linux were then discussed by everyone. Vikram spoke about his projects in wireless technology. He has also recently launched an initiative called PPP. This initiative hopes to build a legal framework for protection of personal privacy. Presently India does not have any such framework ; this was evident in the Aarushi Talwar case. Krishnakant then spoke about his experiences in converting people to Linux. He also spoke about the presentations he gave and the questions he was asked regarding Linux. He discussed certain projects he was involved in. He also shared a great story about the Open Source Community. He described how a Firefox add-on was created within 36 hours based on his request to the community.
