Sound problems with Hardy

After upgrade to Hardy, one of the problems I have seen is that you cannot play a youtube video and a mp3 in parallel. Not only that, even *after* the youtube video finishes, vlc will give you no audio until you close the FF tab with the video. There is a suggestion at http://linuxowns.wordpress.com/2008/04/29/hardy-heron-sound-problems/ . I will try it out later today. hi I am trying to edit a file through a shell script, but i am trying to edt it in a particular manner here is a typical scenario i am facing I have a file called script.txt withe following content : *the owner of the* *trademark UNIX* *is The Open Group* *an industry standards* *consortium*. Now i want to edit this file , but i want to edit this file in such a manner that after a given pattern i should be able to search an entire block-pattern , then delete that block-pattern . for example suppose after this given pattern */trademark UNIX/ * if exist then i want to delete the block-pattern /*is The Open Group*\n*an industry standards/* ??? any ideas to append is pretty much simple with "sed " sed -i "/*trademark UNIX*/a\*UNIX is great* \n*UNIX is awesome*" script.txt my file would then look something like this *the owner of the* *trademark UNIX* *UNIX is great* *UNIX is awesome* *is The Open Group* *an industry standards* *consortium* its is possible with sed and awk. can some one help me with my above query Thanks -- सादर Agnello Dsouza www.linux-vashi.blogspot.com

[OT] Smart kiosks as an extention to manned counters.

Hello, Since quite some time, the Railways has introduced smart cards that can be used on touch screen kiosks to book tickets with varying choices like destination, single/return, number of adults/children and class of travel. The card costs only Rs.100/- and you get a free initial usage of Rs. 50/-. It is a pure cash card with no ID or papers required and is purchased across the counter. To recharge it, simply pay amounts like 50/-, 100/- upto 500/- and you get it recharged across the counter. I find this technology has tremendous potential for use in various Govt. as well as private organizations where there are long queues on manned counters. For example bill payments for MTNL, BEST. The Post Office is another department that would benefit very much from this. Multiple PO kiosks inside the PO could offer services like stamps, money-order as well as registered letters. Just like the current manned counters, you simply enter the sender and destination address and 2 identical sticker labels with bar codes will pop out. One is to be pasted on the letter and the other is the sender's copy. A smart plate on top of the machine can be the weighing scale for determining the postage as per the weight of the letter/parcel. The letter/parcel is then dropped inside a designated box. An extra feature would be to optically scan the movement of the letter inward as proof of dropping. This kiosk can also be placed in banks and enterprising shops who can be given....say 5% of all earnings through that kiosk. so now the Post Office is not far away but right near your home and the Postal Dept. does not have to invest in land or office manpower to extend its reach. The same technology can be used by courier companies too. MTNL's telephone exchanges too can use these kiosks for bill payments and adding/removing extra services to their subscription like changing plans, enabling CLIP. The kiosks can be linked with wireless networking so that it is immune to cable problems. Help Needed for Hindi Typiing in Ubuntu

I have installed GNU/Linux Ubuntu on the PC of one of the senior science writers. He was using Windows earlier. Now he is facing some problems using a feature of Windows Character Map, wherein he could assign a key to type particular alphabet in Shusha Font. He uses OpenOffice to type his article in Hindi. If I failed to help him out he might go back to Windows which I don't want and which will discourage others to take Linux. Could someone please help? Swapnil Bring your gang together. Do your thing. Hi all I use hindi input all the time too. There is a phonetic SCIM keymap available from oriya.sarovar.org ( http://oriya.sarovar.org/download/hi-baraha.mim) . However I did not like the keymap they had made , it reduced the typing speed for me, hence I took their .mim file and made some changes to it to make typing hindi faster as we have in Baraha IME system on Windows or the ISIS system on linux (more power to opensource!). My modified file is available at http://aniketvb.googlepages.com . The file should be placed in /usr/share/m17n (in fedora). I do not know the path in Ubuntu, the list users can please help. The usage is pretty simple का = ka कि = ki की = kii कु = ku कू = kuu कं = k + M (shift M . .basically M for the बिंदु on anything) श = sh ष = Sh द = द ड = D ध = dh ढ = Dh ॐ = oum मॅ = m ~ e ( three keys !) मँ = m ~ M (three again ) ऋ = Ru ॠ = RU क्ष = k + /+ S +h For जोडअक्षर use / eg क्लास = क + / + ला + स Enable SCIM in your system as input method and then in scim config , you can set the hotkey to trigger the input method. I use the default Control + Space as the hotkey and I have just enabled one keymap (ie this one) and the other is the system default. Go ahead and try it and let me know in cade there are any difficulties. I admit that this method takes a little time (few days) to get used to though! but it enhanced my hindi/marathi typing speed greatly Aniket (अनिकेत !)

right to left text entry

Hi, I am using Kubuntu 7.04 w/ openoffice. I have downloaded some avesta fonts and want to use right to left text entry. In openoffice I have enabled CTL and I even got the left to right and right to left toolbar buttons activated. There is no language pack for avesta. What is happening is that when I try typing right to left: The cursor is on the right of the line (as it should be I suppose). Now suppose I want to type _jack_ in _avesta_ it should come as _kcaj_ meaning that the subsequent letters must appear to the left of the preceding alphabet and the cursor must move to the left. What is happening is that the cursor remains at the right end of the line and letters appear to the right of the preceding letter. Surprisingly, when I type a punctuation mark, the cursor moves to the left side of the line and the punctuation mark appears at the left end of the line; the cursor changes from a straight line to what I can best explain as a golf flag, but typing another letter makes the cursor jump back to the right end of the line and its the same story again. Google is throwing up links with this same problem but no solution. I hope I am being lucid enough. I can give you any more info required. [OT] the new blender movie is out

Hi all, Maybe we missed it in the commotion of a latest bollywood movie ;) , but still, "Big Buck Bunny" has been released a while ago and is available for download. http://www.bigbuckbunny.org/index.php/download/ Its a short-feature around 10 minutes long, but is pretty cool given the fact that it is released under a CC license. And quite obviously it was created using Blender[1]. AFAIK, the DVD set contains all .blend files and hence would be a perfect medium to showcase the capabilities of FOSS tools in Multimedia where it seems to lag behind a bit. ISO Puts OOXML On Hold

Here is ISO's press release, which says that ISO/IEC DIS 29500 will not be published for at least "several months" while the appeals process goes forward. Update: 06/11 10:13 GMT by KD : Reader Alsee points out that the fourth officially recognized appealing country is Venezuela, not Denmark as originally stated.
